Abstract

Recently the Dutch, Belgian, and North-Rhine Westphalian Fusion Institutes have consolidated their fusion research on the medium-sized tokamak TEXTOR-94 in the so-called Trilateral Euregio Cluster. To aid the new physics program of TEC, a large number of advanced core diagnostics has recently been implemented. In this article we will discuss the reasoning that has led to the choices of the various diagnostics. Furthermore, we will briefly describe the new diagnostics systems. Abstract

The determination of electron temperature and density profiles with high resolution Thomson Scattering is reconsidered, focusing on the correct treatment of the statistics and error estimation. Based on this, methods are proposed to decide whether spatial structures observed in the measured profiles are significant. A detailed statistical analysis of the detection process is given. It is shown that a maximum likelihood method must be used to fit the theoretical scattering spectra to the data, in order to obtain electron temperature and density. Furthermore, an existing calibration procedure for the detector, based exclusively on the statistics of the detected scattering image, is perfected. This self-consistent analysis leads to a precise definition of the confidence limits. Based on these, statistical tests are designed to determine whether structures seen on the Thomson scattering profiles are significant or not. 42. Determination of the local current density by means of tangential Thomson scattering: Experimental setup, feasibility test, and preliminary observations.

Abstract

The local current density is one of the most important and most difficult parameters to be determined in a thermonuclear plasma. An experimental setup to measure the local electron drift velocity and thus, the current density, by means of tangential Thomson scattering, is presented. The drift velocity of the plasma causes a small wavelength shift of the scattered spectrum, which will be proportional to the local current density if toroidal ion rotation can be neglected. The ratio between the drift velocity and the mean thermal electron velocity is small, typically ∼ 0.05. A 20channel high transmission polychromator has been constructed to observe the electron temperature and density within an accuracy of 1% and the drift velocity within 20% at a plasma density n[sub e] ≈ 5 × 10[sup 19] m[sup -3] and a laser energy of 7 J. A feasibility test on radial scattering shows that there is good agreement between the accuracy obtained from quantum statistics and observations, respectively. The high transmission and relatively high resolution of the polychromator enable the observation of irregularities in the velocity distribution which should be taken into account in the determination of the drift velocity. Preliminary observations in the tangential direction demonstrate the possibility to determine the drift velocity by a single laser shot. At n[sub e] ≈ 6 × l0[sup 19] m[sup -3] and a laser energy of 3.5 J in the scattering volume a wavelength shift of -2.5 ± 0.5 nm has been recorded corresponding to j[sub φ ≈ 1 × l0[sup 7] A/m². 43. High-transmission 20-channel polychromator for observing non-Maxwellian electron velocity distributions in plasmas by Thomson scattering

Abstract

A high-transmission (~45%) twenty-channel polychromator equipped with near-infrared sensitive photo-multipliers has been constructed to record Thomson scattering spectra at the TORTUR tokamak. The high transmission was achieved by the use of mirrors instead of fiber optics to guide the spectrally resolved light to a set of photomultipliers. Spectral analysis is performed with a holographically ruled concave grating. Acceptable dimensions of the wavelength selection mirrors were obtained by magnifying the spectral image by a factor of 5 with a Mangin mirror. Electron temperatures up to 1000 eV at a density of 5 × 10^19 m^−3 can be measured with an accuracy of ≈1%. Both high sensitivity and high resolution enable the detection of irregularities in the velocity distribution. For example, satellites corresponding to partial densities of (5 ± 1) × 10^17 m^−3 were found at 23 nm from the laser wavelength.

44. Stigmatic and coma-free imaging with a thick prism: a comparison of third-order theory and ray-tracing results

Abstract

Although the use of prisms is often avoided because of their aberrations, they are suitable for image-tilt correction. In contradiction to current recommendations, zero astigmatism together with zero coma cannot be achieved at minimum deviation. This paper describes two configurations that meet these conditions. A correction of earlier published third-order formulas is presented and compared to ray-tracing results. The results of the third-order theory are used to develop a model for image-tilt correction, while introducing minimal coma and maintaining a flat image field.
