An assessment was carried out on the impact of Lernaea cyprinacea on fish populations ten years after its first outbreak in the Malilangwe reservoir, and Lernaea cyprinacea is currently showing no sign of declining in the reservoir. Eight fish species were examined for ectoparasite prevalence and intensity. The possible relationship between L. cyprinacea infestation and environmental factors were investigated. Two parasite species, L. cyprinacea in Oreochromis mossambiccus, Oreochromis placidus, Oreochromis macrochir, Labeo altivelis and Tilapia rendalli and trematode cysts (Clinostomoides brieni) in Clarias gariepinus were found. Lernaea cyprinacea prevalence was 100% amongst all cichlids but varied for L. altivelis. The stomach contents of tigerfish Hydrocynus vittatus, caught in an angling competition on Lake Kariba, were examined to determine the extent to which they feed on the invasive crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus. The stomach contents of 281 tigerfish caught during three tournaments (2013, 2014 and 2015) were examined and grouped into six main categories. The proportion of empty stomachs ranged from 4.6 to 13.9% in males and from 11.9 to 29.1% in females. The main food items according to the frequency of occurrence were fish (Limnothrissa miodon (69.0 ± 13.0%) fish remains (bones and scales; 33.0 ± 22.0%), Cichlidae (26.8 ± 2.10%) and Mormyridae (0.5 ± 0.9%) and invertebrates, such as crayfish (24.9 ± 4.6%) and insects (5.2 ± 2.1%). This tournament has been useful in confirming changes in tigerfish diet following the introduction and establishment of non-native species, such as Limnothrissa miodon and, more recently, the crayfish, C. quadricarinatus. Two new and one known species of Annulotrema Paperna & Thurston, 1969 are reported from the gills of the tigerfish Hydrocynus vittatus Castelnau, 1861, collected in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe. The new species, Annulotrema pseudonili n. sp. and A. bracteatum n. sp., are described and distinguished mainly on the basis of features of the male copulatory organ (MCO). Annulotrema pseudonili n. sp. most closely resembles A. nili Paperna, 1973, but differs from it by possessing a more delicate MCO with a thin-walled base without a fibrous distal part. Annulotrema bracteatum n. sp. is most similar to Annulotrema ruahae Paperna, 1973, from which it differs by having an MCO composed of a longer copulatory tube and a leaf-shaped accessory piece enveloping the distal part of the tube. The presence of Annulotrema pikoides Guégan, Lambert & Birgi, 1988 on H. vittatus in Zimbabwe represents a new locality record for this parasite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a widely utilized system due to its useful quantum properties. Almost all research focuses on the negative charge state (NV−) and comparatively little is understood about the neutral charge state (NV0). This is surprising as the charge state often fluctuates between NV0 and NV− during measurements. There are potentially under-utilized technical applications that could take advantage of NV0, either by improving the performance of NV0 or utilizing NV− directly. However, the fine structure of NV0 has not been observed. Here, we rectify this lack of knowledge by performing magnetic circular dichroism measurements that quantitatively determine the fine structure of NV0. The observed behavior is accurately described by spin-Hamiltonians in the ground and excited states with the ground state yielding a spin-orbit coupling of λ = 2.24 ± 0.05 GHz and a orbital g-factor of 0.0186 ± 0.0005. The reasons why this fine structure has not been previously measured are discussed and strain-broadening is concluded to be the likely reason.

Concentrations of zinc, cadmium, chromium, nickel, lead, copper and iron were measured in flowing water, riverbed sediments and tissues of sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus from three rivers in the upper Manyame catchment over seven months in 2008–2009. The Manyame and Mukuvisi rivers are severely polluted by industrial and domestic effluent, whilst the Gwebi River is not influenced by urban effluent. Key water quality parameters, including dissolved oxygen and conductivity, clearly showed a pollution gradient in the Mukuvisi and Manyame rivers, but water quality in the Gwebi River was good. Levels of zinc, iron, copper, nickel and lead in fish tissues from the three rivers sampled were unusually high, with zinc and iron concentrations being the highest in all the tissues. This was also positively correlated with the concentrations of these metals in water and sediments. Notable differences existed between the water (zinc and copper) and sediments (iron and zinc) of each river. The relatively high metal concentrations in the Gwebi River, as well as conductivity and dissolved ions, were explained by the geological influence of the Great Dyke in its subcatchment. Metals are bound in the sediment but these can be rapidly mobilised into water if environmental changes occur, therefore efforts to monitor and prevent further water quality deterioration are required. The results of this study may have significant negative implications for aquatic organisms and for human health through fish consumption and therefore risk assessment investigations are imperative. The relationship between parasite species diversity and organic pollution in the upper Manyame catchment, Zimbabwe, was investigated between October 2006 and January 2007. The parasite assemblage comprised 13 species in total. Species richness in the unpolluted sites was high; in the moderately polluted sites, it was low, while in the polluted sites, only one parasite species was encountered. Component community diversity, as measured by the Shannon index (H1), decreased with increase in organic pollution. The distribution and occurrence of ectoparasites (Dolops ranarum, Lamproglena clariae, Chonopeltis sp. and Macrogyrodactylus sp.) and one endoparasite (Lytocestus sp.) were limited to the unpolluted sites, demonstrating their sensitivity to organic pollution. The prevalence of the nematodes Paracamallanus cyathopharynx, Procamallanus laevionchus and Contracaecum spp. larvae decreased along the pollution gradient, showing their high sensitivity to organic pollution. The platyhelminths Diplostomum sp. and Polyonchobothrium clarias were the most tolerant and occurred at both polluted and unpolluted sites. Proteocephalus sp. and Caryophyllaeus sp. were limited to the polluted sites, probably as a result of high abundance of oligochaetes and copepods, their intermediate hosts that thrive in sewage-enriched sediments, at the downstream sites. The observed results assume that the decrease in parasite diversity can be related to increased organic pollution. Some parasites requiring complex life histories were absent along with pollution-related disappearance of their vector hosts.
