The analyzed research projects are selected among research institutes and universities that are part of the European Energy Research Alliance Joint Program on Smart Grids. The paper provides an overview of recent trends in the field of electric vehicles integration issues and then dives deeper into specific aspects of each project. Twelve research projects are presented in general terms, while detailed information can be retrieved from the references and the websites. Although each project has its focus, a common element that can be devised is that the charging process can be technically controlled based on different interests and algorithms, but its role in the market is still under development. Particular focus is always given to the behavior of the user, which ultimately determines the possible level of flexibility that the electric vehicle can provide to the grid.

16. A control strategy to minimize fuel consumption of series hybrid electric vehicles

Abstract

This paper presents an approach to the problem of controlling the electricity generation of series hybrid electric vehicles (SHEVs) and proposes an algorithm with the goal to minimize fuel consumption. Starting from the knowledge of the vehicle electric generator consumption maps, as well as information on the vehicle battery behavior, and on some overall parameters characterizing the expected trip, the algorithm is able to define: * whether to continuously keep the generator in the ON state or not; * when to, if is the case, switch the generator ON or OFF; * the instantaneous power to be delivered by the electric generator when in ON state. Adopting such parameters enables avoiding to previously know the battery losses on a given trip and offers the possibility to update the control according to online measures. Addresses are also given on how to online assess the trip parameters to be used as inputs for the algorithm. Abstract

In a series hybrid electric vehicle (SHEV), an electric generator feeds a dc busbar (containing an electrochemical accumulator), which, in turns, feeds the vehicle traction system. A very important part of the vehicle is its control system, which has to maximize the vehicle efficiency while keeping the emissions within predetermined limits. To attain this goal, it can act in two ways: 1) It can switch the electric generator ON or OFF, and 2) when in the ON state, it can impose a given power to be delivered. To choose the control actions to perform it needs a) an algorithm to understand the behavior of the battery (determine the state-of-charge, maximum power, losses and b) an algorithm to make some forecast of the system load (i.e., the power required in the future of the trip, as a function of time). This paper discusses the main problems that arise when trying to synthesize the control system of the vehicle, taking into account issues a) and b). Some lab tests are also presented in which some of the proposed control techniques are experimentally checked. 18. Dynamical models of lead-acid batteries: implementation issues

Abstract

This paper explains how the lead-acid models described in a previous paper can be utilized in practice. Two main issues are opened by that paper: 1) The paper does not supply detailed information on how to identify the several parameters of the proposed models, and 2) it defines a whole family of models, but does not discuss which model of the family is adequate for a given purpose. These two issues are tackled in this paper. For the first issue, the more complex one, two options are proposed and discussed: 1) a complete identification procedure involving extensive tests and 2) a simplified one that combines information from lab tests and data supplied by the manufacturer. In addition, further simplifications applicable in cases of batteries belonging to the same family are presented. Index Terms--Batteries, modeling, parameter estimation.
