A long-standing challenge in quantum error correction is the infeasibility of universal transversal gates, as shown by the Eastin-Knill theorem. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a quantum code to have universal transversal gates and show that the Eastin-Knill no-go result is a special case that does not hold for a general error model. We present a code construction using $n$ $d$-dimensional systems that changes the logical error probability from a lower bound $\Omega (1/n\log d)$ to an upper bound $\mathcal O (1/n d)$ and allows exact correction of both local and correlated errors. We investigate the phenomenon of magnomechanically induced grating (MMIG) within a cavity magnomechanical system, comprising magnons (spins in a ferromagnet, such as yttrium iron garnet), cavity microwave photons, and phonons [\textit{J. Li, S.-Y. Zhu, and G. S. Agarwal, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{121}, 203601 (2018)}]. By applying an external standing wave control, we observe modifications in the transmission profile of a probe light beam, signifying the presence of MMIG. Through numerical analysis, we explore the diffraction intensities of the probe field, examining the impact of interactions between cavity magnons, magnon-phonon interactions, standing wave field strength, and interaction length. MMIG systems leverage the unique properties of magnons, and collective spin excitations with attributes like long coherence times and spin-wave propagation. We introduce a scheme to characterise a qudit T gate that has different noise than a set of Clifford gates. We developed our scheme through representation theory and ring theory to generalise non-Clifford interleaved benchmarking to qudit systems. By restricting to the qubit case, we recover the dihedral benchmarking scheme. We aim to establish a scalable scheme for characterising diagonal non-Clifford gates for single- and multi-qudit systems; \(d\) is a prime-power integer. By employing cyclic operators and a qudit T gate, we generalise the dihedral benchmarking scheme for single- and multi-qudit circuits. Our results establish a path for experimentally benchmarking qudit systems and are of theoretical and experimental interest because our scheme is optimal insofar as it does not require preparation of the full qudit Clifford gate set to characterise a non-Clifford gate. We consider the optimal driving of the ground state of a many-body quantum system across a quantum phase transition in finite time. In this context, excitations caused by the breakdown of adiabaticity can be minimized by adjusting the schedule of the control parameter that drives the transition. Drawing inspiration from the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, we characterize the timescale of onset of adiabaticity for several optimal control procedures. Our analysis reveals that schedules relying on local adiabaticity, such as Roland-Cerf's local adiabatic driving and the quantum adiabatic brachistochrone, fail to provide a significant speedup over the adiabatic evolution in the transverse-field Ising and long-range Kitaev models. As an alternative, we introduce a novel framework, Non-Adiabatic Quantum Optimization (NAQO), that, by exploiting the Landau-Zener formula and taking into account the role of higher-excited states, outperforms schedules obtained via both local adiabaticity and state-of-the-art numerical optimization. NAQO is not restricted to exactly solvable models, and we further confirm its superior performance in a disordered non-integrable model., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, comments welcome

High-dimensional quantum systems are a valuable resource for quantum information processing. They can be used to encode error-correctable logical qubits, for instance in continuous-variable states of oscillators such as microwave cavities or the motional modes of trapped ions. Powerful encodings include 'Schr\"odinger cat' states, superpositions of widely displaced coherent states, which also embody the challenge of quantum effects at the large scale. Alternatively, recent proposals suggest encoding logical qubits in high-spin atomic nuclei, which can host hardware-efficient versions of continuous-variable codes on a finite-dimensional system. Here we demonstrate the creation and manipulation of Schr\"odinger cat states using the spin-7/2 nucleus of a single antimony ($^{123}$Sb) atom, embedded and operated within a silicon nanoelectronic device. We use a coherent multi-frequency control scheme to produce spin rotations that preserve the SU(2) symmetry of the qudit, and constitute logical Pauli operations for logical qubits encoded in the Schr\"odinger cat states. The Wigner function of the cat states exhibits parity oscillations with a contrast up to 0.982(5), and state fidelities up to 0.913(2). We introduce a characterisation scheme for a universal qutrit gate set. Motivated by the rising interest in qutrit systems, we apply our criteria to establish that our hyperdihedral group underpins a scheme to characterise the performance of a qutrit T gate. Our resulting qutrit scheme is feasible, as it requires resources and data analysis techniques similar to resources employed for qutrit Clifford randomised benchmarking. Berry curvature is a fundamental element to characterize topological quantum physics, while a full measurement of Berry curvature in momentum space was not reported for topological states. Here we achieve two-dimensional Berry curvature reconstruction in a photonic quantum anomalous Hall system via Hall transport measurement of a momentum-resolved wave packet. Integrating measured Berry curvature over the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, we obtain Chern numbers corresponding to -1 and 0. Further, we identify bulk-boundary correspondence by measuring topology-linked chiral edge states at the boundary. The full topological characterization of photonic Chern bands from Berry curvature, Chern number, and edge transport measurements enables our photonic system to serve as a versatile platform for further in-depth study of novel topological physics.

Simulating quantum physical processes has been one of the major motivations for quantum information science. Quantum channels, which are completely positive and trace preserving processes, are the standard mathematical language to describe quantum evolution, while in recent years quantum superchannels have emerged as the substantial extension. Superchannels capture effects of quantum memory and non-Markovianality more precisely, and have found broad applications in universal models, algorithm, metrology, discrimination tasks, as examples. Here, we report an experimental simulation of qubit superchannels in a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system with high accuracy, based on a recently developed quantum algorithm for superchannel simulation. Our algorithm applies to arbitrary target superchannels, and our experiment shows the high quality of NMR simulators for near-term usage. Our approach can also be adapted to other experimental systems and demonstrates prospects for more applications of superchannels.

Device-independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD) is information-theoretically secure against adversaries who possess a scalable quantum computer and who have supplied malicious key-establishment systems; however, the DIQKD key rate is currently too low. Consequently, we devise a DIQKD scheme based on the quantum nonlocal Mermin-Peres magic square game: our scheme asymptotically delivers DIQKD against collective attacks, even with noise. Our scheme outperforms DIQKD using the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt game with respect to the number of game rounds, albeit not number of entangled pairs, provided that both state visibility and detection efficiency are high enough., Comment: Numerical errors are corrected while main claims remain unchanged. 6+4 pages. Quasiparticle poisoning errors in Majorana-based qubits are not suppressed by the underlying topological properties, which undermines the usefulness of this proposed platform. This work tackles the issue via quasiparticle measurement. Error-detecting Majorana stabilizer codes are constructed whose stabilizers can be measured by means of Wannier position operators. For a logical qubit encoded in one of these codes, the Pauli error rates are exponentially suppressed in the code distance, a result tied to the exponential localization of Wannier functions. The benefit comes at the cost of a qubit loss rate that increases linearly with the distance, but these can be readily compensated for by a suitable outer code. The framework developed here serves as a basis for understanding how realistic measurements, such as conductance measurements, could be utilized for achieving fault tolerance in these systems. The work also demonstrates that the theory of Wannier functions could lead to error correcting codes beyond the standard stabilizer codes, uncovering another fruitful connection between condensed matter physics and quantum information theory., Comment: 23 pages including appendices, 8 figures

Control and learning are key to technological advancement, both in the classical and quantum domains, yet their interrelationship is insufficiently clear in the literature, especially between classical and quantum definitions of control and learning. We construct a framework that formally relates learning and control, both classical and quantum, to each other, with this formalism showing how learning can aid control. Furthermore, our framework helps to identify interesting unsolved problems in the nexus of classical and quantum control and learning and help in choosing tools to solve problems. As a use case, we cast the well-studied problem of adaptive quantum-enhanced interferometric-phase estimation as a supervised learning problem for devising feasible control policies. Compass states deliver sub-Planck phase-space structure in the sense that sensitivity to phase-space displacement is superior to the sensitivity of displacing the vacuum state in any direction, but this sensitivity is anisotropic: better sensitivity for some directions of phase-space displacement vs others. Here we introduce generalised compass states as superpositions of $n$ compass states, with each oriented by $\frac\pi{2n}$ with respect to its predecessor. Specifically, we derive Wigner functions for these generalised compass states and approximate closed-form expressions for overlaps between generalised compass states and their displaced counterparts. Electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes splitting are two distinct yet related effects. These phenomena are relevant to quantum technologies, including quantum memory, quantum switching, and quantum transduction. Here, the similarities and differences between these phenomena along historical and conceptual lines are discussed and their realizations on various physical platforms including atomic gases, superconducting circuits, and optomechanics are elaborated. It is known that all the proportional reversed hazard (PRH) processes can be de?rived by a marginal transformation applied to a power function distribution (PFD) process. Kundu [8] investigated PRH processes that can be viewed as being ob?tained by marginal transformations applied to a particular PFD process that will be described and investigated and will be called a Kundu process. In the present note, in addition to studying the Kundu process, we introduce a new PFD process having Markovian and stationarity properties. We discuss distributional features of such processes, explore inferential aspects and include an example of applications of the PFD processes to real-life data.

We propose a scheme to generate spin cat states, i.e., superpositions of maximally separated quasiclassical states on a single high-dimensional nuclear spin in a solid-state device. We exploit a strong quadrupolar nonlinearity to drive the nucleus significantly faster than usual gate sequences, achieving collapses and revivals two orders of magnitude faster than the dephasing timescale. Furthermore, these states are engineered without entanglement with an ancilla, hence, are robust against error propagation. We introduce and analyse approximate quantum secret sharing in a formal cryptographic setting, wherein a dealer encodes and distributes a quantum secret to players such that authorized structures (sets of subsets of players) can approximately reconstruct the quantum secret and omnipotent adversarial agents controlling non-authorized subsets of players are approximately denied the quantum secret. In particular, viewing the map encoding the quantum secret to shares for players in an authorized structure as a quantum channel, we show that approximate reconstructability of the quantum secret by these players is possible if and only if the information leakage, given in terms of a certain entanglement-assisted capacity of the complementary quantum channel to the players outside the structure and the environment, is small., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

Bivariate count data arise in several different disciplines (epidemiology, marketing, sports statistics, etc., to name but a few) and the bivariate Poisson distribution which is a generalization of the Poisson distribution plays an important role in modeling such data. In this article, we consider the inferential aspect of a bivariate Poisson conditionals distribution for which both the conditionals are Poisson but the marginals are typically non-Poisson. It has Poisson marginals only in the case of independence. It appears that a simple iterative procedure under the maximum likelihood method performs quite well as compared with other numerical subroutines, as one would expect in such a case where the MLEs are not available in closed form. In the Bayesian paradigm, both conjugate priors and non-conjugate priors have been utilized and a comparison study has been made via a simulation study. For illustrative purposes, a real-life data set is re-analyzed to exhibit the utility of the proposed two methods of estimation, one under the frequentist approach and the other under the Bayesian paradigm., Comment: 20 pages

Two-qubit gate performance is vital for scaling up ion-trap quantum computing. Optimized quantum control is needed to achieve reductions in gate-time and gate error-rate. We describe two-qubit gates with addressed Raman beams within a linear trapped-ion chain by a quantum master equation (QME). The QME incorporates the single-ion two-photon effective Rabi frequency, Autler-Townes and vibrational Bloch-Siegert energy shifts, off-resonant transitions, Raman and Rayleigh scattering, laser-power fluctuations, motional heating, cross-Kerr phonon coupling, laser spillover, asymmetric addressing beams and an imperfect initial motional ground state, with no fitting parameters. Whereas state-of-the-art methods are oblivious to these effects in the gate design procedure. We employ global optimization to design pulse sequences for achieving a robust rapid two-qubit gate for seven trapped $^{171}$Yb$^{+}$ ions by optimizing over numerically integrated QME solutions. Here, robust means resilient against slow drift of motional frequencies, and rapid means gate execution where the effective Rabi frequency is comparable to the detuning of the laser from the ion's bare electronic transition. Electron dynamics, financial markets and nuclear fission reactors, though seemingly unrelated, all produce observable characteristics evolving with time. Within this broad scope, departures from normal temporal behavior range from academically interesting to potentially catastrophic. New algorithms for time series anomaly detection (TAD) are therefore certainly in demand. With the advent of newly accessible quantum processing units (QPUs), exploring a quantum approach to TAD is now relevant and is the topic of this work. Our approach - Quantum Variational Rewinding, or, QVR - trains a family of parameterized unitary time-devolution operators to cluster normal time series instances encoded within quantum states. Unseen time series are assigned an anomaly score based upon their distance from the cluster center, which, beyond a given threshold, classifies anomalous behavior. After a first demonstration with a simple and didactic case, QVR is used to study the real problem of identifying anomalous behavior in cryptocurrency market data. Finally, multivariate time series from the cryptocurrency use case are studied using IBM's Falcon r5.11H family of superconducting transmon QPUs, where anomaly score errors resulting from hardware noise are shown to be reducible by as much as 20% using advanced error mitigation techniques., Comment: Main article: 11 pages and 4 figures. Constructing all extreme instances of the set of completely positive trace-preserving (CPTP) maps, i.e., quantum channels, is a challenging valuable open problem in quantum information theory. Here we introduce a systematic approach that enables us to construct exactly those extreme channels that are covariant with respect to a finite discrete group or a compact connected Lie group. Innovative labeling of quantum channels by group representations enables us to identify the subset of group-covariant channels whose elements are group-covariant generalized-extreme channels. Furthermore, we exploit essentials of group representation theory to introduce equivalence classes for the labels and also partition the set of group-covariant channels. As a result we show that it is enough to construct one representative of each partition. We construct Kraus operators for group-covariant generalized-extreme channels by solving systems of linear and quadratic equations for all candidates satisfying the necessary condition for being group-covariant generalized-extreme channels. Deciding whether these constructed instances are extreme or quasi-extreme is accomplished by solving system of linear equations. We formalize the problem of constructing and classifying group-covariant generalized extreme channels, thereby yielding an algorithmic approach to solving, which we express as pseudocode. To illustrate the application and value of our method, we solve for explicit examples of group-covariant extreme channels. With unbounded computational resources to execute our algorithm, our method always delivers a description of an extreme channel for any finite-dimensional Hilbert-space and furthermore guarantees a description of a group-covariant extreme channel for any dimension and for any finite-discrete or compact connected Lie group if such an extreme channel exists.

A random variable is equi-dispersed if its mean equals its variance. A Poisson distribution is a classical example of this phenomenon. However, a less well-known fact is that the class of normal densities that are equi-dispersed constitutes a one parameter exponential family. In the present article our main focus is on univariate and bivariate models with equi-dispersed normal component distributions. We discuss distributional features of such models, explore inferential aspects and include an example of application of equi-dispersed models. Some related models are discused in Appendices.

We study maximal coin-position entanglement generation via a discrete-time quantum walk, in which the coin operation is randomly selected from one of two coin operators set at each step. We solve maximal entanglement generation as an optimization problem with quantum process fidelity as the cost function. Then we determine the maximal entanglement that can be rigorously generated for any step beyond the second regardless of initial condition with appropriate coin sequences. The simplest coin sequence comprising Hadamard and identity operations is equivalent to the generalized elephant quantum walk, which exhibits an increasingly faster spreading in terms of probability distribution. Experimentally, we demonstrate a ten-step quantum walk driven by such coin sequences with linear optics, and thereby show the desired high-dimensional bipartite entanglement as well as the transport behavior of faster spreading., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. We investigate the sub-Planck-scale structures associated with the SU(1,1) group by establishing that the Planck scale on the hyperbolic plane can be considered as the inverse of the Bargmann index $k$. Our discussion involves SU(1,1) versions of Wigner functions, and the quantum-interference effect is easily visualized through plots of these Wigner functions. Specifically, the superpositions of four Perelomov SU(1,1) coherent states (compass state) yield nearly isotropic sub-Planck structures in phase space scaling as $\frac1{k}$ compared with $\frac1{\sqrt{k}}$ scaling for individual SU(1,1) coherent states and anisotropic quadratically improved scaling for superpositions of two SU(1,1) coherent states (cat state). We develop a classically verifiable scheme for blindly factorizing the semiprime 21 quantumly for a classical client who does not trust the remote quantum servers. Our scheme advances state of the art, which achieves blind factorization of 15 quantumly, by increasing the problem to factorizing the next semiprime, choosing a harder base, executing a non-Clifford gate, and showing that the security check for 15 also works for 21. A neutral-atom system serves as a promising platform for realizing gate-based quantum computing because of its capability to trap and control several atomic qubits in different geometries and the ability to perform strong, long-range interactions between qubits; however, the two-qubit entangling gate fidelity lags behind competing platforms such as superconducting systems and trapped ions. The aim of our work is to design a fast, robust, high-fidelity controlled-Z (CZ) gate, based on the Rydberg-blockade mechanism, for neutral atoms. We propose a gate procedure that relies on simultaneous and transitionless quantum driving of a pair of atoms using broadband lasers. By simulating a system of two interacting Caesium atoms, including spontaneous emission from excited levels and parameter fluctuations, we yield a Rydberg-blockade CZ gate with fidelity 0.9985 over an operation time of $0.12~\mu$s. Our gate procedure delivers CZ gates that are superior than the state-of-the-art experimental CZ gate and the simulated CZ gates based on adiabatic driving of atoms. A multiphoton collective phase is a multiphoton-scattering feature that cannot be reduced to a sequence of two-photon scattering events, and the three-photon "triad phas" is the smallest nontrivial example. Observing a higher-order collective phase is experimentally challenging, and only triad and four-photon tetrad collective phases have been observed. We introduce a scheme to make higher-order multiphoton collective-phase observations feasible by designing a sparse interferometer, which significantly reduces complexity compared with the current best scheme for observing a multiphoton collective phase. Specifically, our scheme reduces the optical depth from logarithmic to constant and reduces the number of beam splitters from $O(n\log n)$ to linear scaling with respect to the collective-phase order $n$. As constant depth reduces loss and dispersion to a fixed rate regardless of collective-phase order, a major obstacle to observing large-scale collective phases is removed., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures

The COHERENT experiment located in Neutrino Alley at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has made the world's first two measurements of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS), on CsI and argon, using neutrinos produced at the SNS. The COHERENT collaboration continues to pursue CEvNS measurements on various targets as well as additional studies of inelastic neutrino-nucleus interactions, searches for accelerator-produced dark matter (DM) and physics beyond the Standard Model, using the uniquely high-quality and high-intensity neutrino source available at the SNS. This white paper describes primarily COHERENT's ongoing and near-future program at the SNS First Target Station (FTS). With the best of modern standard lasers, high-energy $\gamma\gamma$ colliders from electron beams of E larger than 250 GeV are only possible at the expense of photon luminosity, i.e. 10 times lower than for photon colliders at c.m. energies below 0.5 TeV. For existing state-of-the art lasers, an optimistic upper energy limit for x=4.8 is an electron beam of less than 250 GeV. This Snowmass21 Contributed Paper shows how Free Electron Lasers (FEL) pave the way for High Energy & High Luminosity $\gamma\gamma$ colliders. Using tools from representation theory, we derive expressions for the coincidence rate of partially-distinguishable particles in an interferometry experiment. Our expressions are valid for either bosons or fermions, and for any number of particles. In an experiment with $n$ particles the expressions we derive contain a term for each partition of the integer $n$; Gamas's theorem is used to determine which of these terms are automatically zero based on the pairwise level of distinguishability between particles. Most sampling schemes (such as Boson Sampling) are limited to completely indistinguishable particles; our work aids in the understanding of systems where an arbitrary level of distinguishability is permitted. We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Quantum field theory (QFT) describes nature using continuous fields, but physical properties of QFT are usually revealed in terms of measurements of observables at a finite resolution. We describe a multiscale representation of a free scalar bosonic and Ising model fermionic QFTs using wavelets. Making use of the orthogonality and self similarity of the wavelet basis functions, we demonstrate some well known relations such as scale dependent subsystem entanglement entropy and renormalization of correlations in the ground state. We also find some new applications of the wavelet transform as a compressed representation of ground states of QFTs which can be used to illustrate quantum phase transitions via fidelity overlap and holographic entanglement of purification., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Quantum interferometry and quantum information processing have been proposed for Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), but BECs are described in complicated ways such as using quantum field theory or using a nonlinear differential equation. Nonlinear quantum mechanics does not mesh well with the superposition principle at the heart of interferometry and quantum information processing but could be compatible. Thus, we develop a rigorous foundation for quantum gates, obtained by solving the equation for evolution, and then we employ this foundation, combined with quantum-control techniques and appropriate state-sampling techniques, to devise feasible nonlinear Hadamard gates and thereby feasible, i.e., high-contrast, nonlinear Ramsey interferometry. Our approach to BEC interferometry and quantum logic shifts the paradigm by enlarging to the case of nonlinear quantum mechanics, which we apply to the cases of BEC interferometry and quantum information processing.

Topological insulators host topology-linked boundary states, whose spin and charge degrees of freedom could be exploited to design topological devices with enhanced functionality. We experimentally observe that dissipationless chiral edge states in a spin-orbit coupled anomalous Floquet topological phase exhibit topological spin texture on boundaries, realized via a two-dimensional quantum walk. Our experiment shows that, for a walker traveling around a closed loop along the boundary in real space, its spin evolves and winds through a great circle on the Bloch sphere, which implies that edge-spin texture has nontrivial winding. This winding is linked to the bulk Dirac Hamiltonian around the energy-gap opening point. Our experiment confirms that two-dimensional anomalous Floquet topological systems exhibit topological spin texture on the boundary, which could inspire novel topology-based spintronic phenomena and devices., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Deciding if a given family of quantum states is topologically ordered is an important but nontrivial problem in condensed matter physics and quantum information theory. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for a family of graph states to be in TQO-1, which is a class of quantum error correction code states whose code distance scales macroscopically with the number of physical qubits. Using these criteria, we consider a number of specific graph families, including the star and complete graphs, and the line graphs of complete and completely bipartite graphs, and discuss which are topologically ordered and how to construct the codewords. The formalism is then employed to construct several codes with macroscopic distance, including a three-dimensional topological code generated by local stabilizers that also has a macroscopic number of encoded logical qubits. The results indicate that graph states provide a fruitful approach to the construction and characterization of topological stabilizer quantum error correction codes., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

We develop a rigorous theory of external influences on finite discrete dynamical systems, going beyond the perturbation paradigm, in that the external influence need not be a small contribution. Indeed, the covariance condition can be stated as follows: if we evolve the dynamical system for $n$ time steps and then we disturb it, it is the same as first disturbing the system with the same influence and then letting the system evolve for $n$ time steps. Applying the powerful machinery of resource theories, we develop a theory of covariant influences both when there is a purely deterministic evolution and when randomness is involved. Subsequently, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the transition between states under deterministic covariant influences and necessary conditions in the presence of stochastic covariant influences, predicting which transitions between states are forbidden. Our approach, for the first time, employs the framework of resource theories, borrowed from quantum information theory, to the study of finite discrete dynamical systems. The laws we articulate unify the behavior of different types of finite discrete dynamical systems, and their mathematical flavor makes them rigorous and checkable., Comment: 23 + 3 pages, 4 figures

The System of Linear Equations Problem (SLEP) is specified by a complex invertible matrix $A$, the condition number $\kappa$ of $A$, a vector $b$, a Hermitian matrix $M$ and an accuracy $\epsilon$, and the task is to estimate $x^\dagger Mx$, where $x$ is the solution vector to the equation $Ax = b$. We aim to establish a lower bound on the complexity of the end-to-end quantum algorithms for SLEP with respect to $\epsilon$, and devise a quantum algorithm that saturates this bound. To make lower bounds attainable, we consider query complexity in the setting in which a block encoding of $M$ is given, i.e., a unitary black box $U_M$ that contains $M/\alpha$ as a block for some $\alpha \in \mathbb R^+$. We show that the quantum query complexity for SLEP in this setting is $\Theta(\alpha/\epsilon)$. Our lower bound is established by reducing the problem of estimating the mean of a black box function to SLEP. Our $\Theta(\alpha/\epsilon)$ result tightens and proves the common assertion of polynomial accuracy dependence (poly$(1/\epsilon)$) for SLEP, and shows that improvement beyond linear dependence on accuracy is not possible if $M$ is provided via block encoding., Comment: 24 pages

The classical machine-learning model for support vector regression (SVR) is widely used for regression tasks, including weather prediction, stock-market and real-estate pricing. However, a practically realisable quantum version for SVR remains to be formulated. We devise annealing-based algorithms, namely simulated and quantum-classical hybrid, for training two SVR models, and compare their empirical performances against the SVR implementation of Python's scikit-learn package and the SVR-based state-of-the-art algorithm for the facial landmark detection (FLD) problem. Our method is to derive a quadratic-unconstrained-binary formulation for the optimisation problem used for training a SVR model and solve this problem using annealing. Using D-Wave's Hybrid Solver, we construct a quantum-assisted SVR model, thereby demonstrating a slight advantage over classical models regarding landmark-detection accuracy. Furthermore, we observe that annealing-based SVR models predict landmarks with lower variances compared to the SVR models trained by greedy optimisation procedures. We devise a quasilinear quantum algorithm for generating an approximation for the ground state of a quantum field theory (QFT). Our quantum algorithm delivers a super-quadratic speedup over the state-of-the-art quantum algorithm for ground-state generation, overcomes the ground-state-generation bottleneck of the prior approach and is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor. Specifically, we establish two quantum algorithms -- Fourier-based and wavelet-based -- to generate the ground state of a free massive scalar bosonic QFT with gate complexity quasilinear in the number of discretized-QFT modes. The Fourier-based algorithm is limited to translationally invariant QFTs. Numerical simulations show that the wavelet-based algorithm successfully yields the ground state for a QFT with broken translational invariance. Furthermore, the cost of preparing particle excitations in the wavelet approach is independent of the energy scale. Our algorithms require a routine for generating one-dimensional Gaussian (1DG) states. We replace the standard method for 1DG-state generation, which requires the quantum computer to perform lots of costly arithmetic, with a novel method based on inequality testing that significantly reduces the need for arithmetic.
