Abstract

This handbook addresses a growing list of challenges faced by regions and cities in the Pacific;Rim, drawing connections around the what, why, and how questions that are fundamental;to sustainable development policies and planning practices. These include the connection;between cities and surrounding landscapes, across different boundaries and scales; the persistence;of environmental and development inequities; and the growing impacts of global;climate change, including how physical conditions and social implications are being anticipated;and addressed. Building upon localized knowledge and contextualized experiences,;this edited collection brings attention to place-;based;approaches across the Pacific Rim and;makes an important contribution to the scholarly and practical understanding of sustainable;urban development models that have mostly emerged out of the Western experiences. Nine;sections, each grounded in research, dialogue, and collaboration with practical examples and;analysis, focus on a theme or dimension that carries critical impacts on a holistic vision of city-;landscape;development, such as resilient communities, ecosystem services and biodiversity,;energy, water, health, and planning and engagement.;This international edited collection will appeal to academics and students engaged in;research involving landscape architecture, architecture, planning, public policy, law, urban;studies, geography, environmental science, and area studies. Abstract

Oxygen vacancies in transition metal oxides facilitate catalysis critical for energy storage and generation. However, it has proven elusive to promote vacancies at the lower temperatures required for operation in devices such as metal-air batteries and portable fuel cells. Here, we use thin films of the perovskite-based strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) to show that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool towards manipulating the oxygen content under conditions consistent with the oxygen evolution reaction, yielding increasingly oxygen deficient states in an environment where the cobaltite would normally be fully oxidized. The additional oxygen vacancies created through tensile strain enhance the cobaltite catalytic activity towards this important reaction by over an order of magnitude, equaling that of precious metal catalysts, including IrO2. Our findings demonstrate that strain in these oxides can dictate oxygen stoichiometry independent of ambient conditions, allowing unprecedented control over oxygen vacancies essential in catalysis near room temperature.

27. Future suburban forests in a changing climate : an approach for integrated planning and design in compact communities

Abstract

North American suburban landscapes are facing critical pressures such as climate change, increasing human health concerns, and loss of biodiversity and habitat. Suburban forests are a critical component of these landscapes and can help face these pressures in a number of ways. The emerging field of urban forestry is producing research that can inform policy and practice to design and plan for future forests in human landscapes. The field currently lacks tested approaches to holistically integrate the complex multiple factors involved with future planning. This study explores a new framework for a scenario-based approach incorporating a design process to examine potential solutions to these complex problems in a holistic way for suburban forests. A Canadian case study was used to develop and evaluate this framework approach combining multiple methods. Within this approach, future scenarios were used to explore suburban forest configurations in an already compact community through the lens of addressing three major critical pressures. This process was informed by participants representing a range of knowledge groups, including academics, practitioners, and local residents. Indicators and preferences elicited from these diverse participants suggested design directions for the emerging scenarios. During the process, each of the knowledge groups acknowledged some aspects of the indicators and preferences, but all missed something that others prioritized. Four scenarios were produced with distinctly different objectives and suburban forest retrofit configurations within the case study compact community. The scenarios were then assessed with a suite of tools and quantitative and qualitative methods, drawn from within the field of urban forestry and from other disciplines. Through informing, designing, and assessing the scenario set, the research found that there is potential for the performance of suburban forests to be enhanced within already dense built environments, and that a range of options exists for doing this. The combination of methods used in this study provide a holistic approach to support such planning and decision-making processes. The framework provides guidance on configurations and variables for suburban forest design and planning in the face of the critical pressures described above.

Abstract

A self-powered ultraviolet (UV) photodetector (PD) based on p-NiO and n-ZnO was fabricated using low-temperature sputtering technique on indium doped tin oxide (ITO) coated plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. The p-n heterojunction showed very fast temporal photoresponse with excellent quantum efficiency of over 63% under UV illumination at an applied reverse bias of 1.2 V. The engineered ultrathin Ti/Au top metal contacts and UV transparent PET/ITO substrates allowed the PDs to be illuminated through either frontside or backside. Morphology, structural, chemical, and optical properties of sputtered NiO and ZnO films were also investigated.

Abstract

In the spring of 2012, a nurse in Washington State detected a cluster of babies born with anencephaly--a fatal condition in which infants are born without parts of the brain or skull. The resulting investigation initially confirmed a rate of anencephaly between January 2010 and January 2013 of 8.4 per 10,000 live births--more than four times the national average. As of November 2015, cases of anencephaly in Washington State have continued to increase, with the current rate estimated at 9.5 per 10,000 live births. While no distinct cause has yet been determined, neural tube defects--including anencephaly--are known to have multiple causes, including folic acid deficit, genetic variants in the folate pathway, and exposure to a variety of environmental and occupational toxins. Abstract

Experiments using a laser-accelerated flyer impact system were conducted on various forms of nickel-aluminum over a range of velocities in attempt to characterize the processes leading to reaction initiation and product formation. The laser-accelerated flyer system consists of an Nd:YAG, 3-Joule, 1064-nm seeded laser, beam shaping optics, recovery chamber, and velocity interferometry diagnostics. Using various flyer materials, impact velocities up to 1.4 km/sec have been measured. The laser-accelerated flyer system was used to conduct impact experiments on Ni-Al powder compacts, Ni-Al vapor-deposited foils, and single Ni-Al interface configurations. Subsequently, post-mortem characterization was performed to identify the processes that lead to reaction initiation and products formed in the various Ni-Al configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
