Abstract

High order numerical solution of the convection-diffusion equation is investigated within the Cartesian cut-stencil framework. High order is achieved by extending the low order mapping of the physical stencil to a generic uniform computational stencil. This procedure allows implementation of high order finite difference approximations of spatial derivatives in complex domains. 10. Technostress from the Perspective of College Students: A Basic Qualitative Study

Abstract

Technostress is an ailment of modern culture, which manifests itself in two ways: the anxiety that is experienced with new and unfamiliar technology or stress as a result of the over identification with technology. The daily use of smartphones, tablets, and personal computers have created a compulsion to constantly connect to the Internet and social media. This compulsion can have an effect on one's stress level and overall health. This basic qualitative study sought to explore the experience of technostress from the perspective of college students. Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from 10 college students who recounted their daily experiences with the stress related with technology. Implications of the results of the study indicated the following: (a) the definition of technostress needs to be expanded to include the absence of technology, (b) college instructors may need to understand the potential stress that students experience due to technostress, and (c) college students may need to be aware of the stress that could be associated with the overuse of technology. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that this study on technostress be replicated on other college campuses to validate the results of the study. Further, a comprehensive study should be conducted on the direct effects of the overuse of technology on health. Abstract

A fully developed approach flow is necessary in open channel studies to maintain commonality among datasets obtained from different facilities. Two-component planar particle image velocimetry is used to study the characteristics of fully developed smooth open channel flow at a constant Reynolds number of 3.9×104 based on the maximum velocity and flow depth. The near-bed boundary layer is tripped to achieve a fully developed state and compared with the under- and over-tripped cases. The Reynolds stresses and higher-order moments are used as indicators to establish the fully developed state. Flow properties are explored by identifying uniform momentum zones (UMZs) using the probability density function of streamwise velocities. The instances are grouped based on the number of UMZs (NUMZ) and conditional averaging of flow variables of each group is used to evaluate the difference in flow properties between the developed and the developing flow. Large-scale ejections are found in the logarithmic layer when NUMZ is higher, whereas a lower number indicates the existence of large-scale sweeping motions. The distribution of the conditionally averaged ratio of the shear contribution from ejections and sweeps and velocity deficits shows a vertical variability in the fully developed state. The large-scale and pointwise quadrant events are used simultaneously to depict variability in inner flow properties between developing and fully developed flow which cannot be recognized in the mean flow characteristics. The sweep events have much higher shear generation in the outer flow in the fully developed state whereas the shear stress contribution from ejection is lower than that in developing flow. Abstract

The flat steel ribbon-wound vessel is a relatively new type of wound pressure vessel. This type of vessel consists of a thin-walled inner core and helically wound flat steel ribbons. The outstanding safety in service of this type of vessel is due, in part, to the large circumferential and axial prestresses introduced during the ribbon-winding process. This paper presents a model for determination of prestresses in such a vessel. The model considers the fabrication procedures producing the prestress in the vessel. Experimental results from tests using full-scale vessels are presented. Agreement between the theoretical model and the experimental results is excellent.
