2. Geometry of elastic hydrofracturing by injection of an over pressured non-Newtonian Fluid

Abstract

The nucleation and propagation of hydrofractures by injection of over pressured fluids in an elastic and isotropic medium are studied experimentally. Non-Newtonian fluids are injected inside a gelatine whose mechanical properties are assumed isotropic at the experimental strain rates. Linear elastic theory predicts that plastic deformation associated to breakage of gelatin bonds is limited to a small zone ahead of the tip of the propagating fracture and that propagation will be maintained while the fluid pressure exceeds the normal stress to the fracture walls (Ch\'avez-\'Alvarez,2008) (i.e., the minimum compressive stress), resulting in a single mode I fracture geometry. However, we observed the propagation of fractures type II and III as well as nucleation of secondary fractures, with oblique to perpendicular trajectories with respect to the initial fracture. In the Video (http://hdl.handle.net/1813/14122) experimental evidence shows that the fracture shape depends on the viscoelastic properties of gelatine coupled with the strain rate achieved by fracture propagation.

3. Fringe Projection Method for 3D High-Resolution Reconstruction of Oil Painting Surfaces.

Abstract

The fringe projection (FP) method is an outstanding tool for reconstructing painted surfaces. This technique, which has been used for conservation and digitization, does not damage the artwork and can reach sub-millimeter accuracy. To carry out this type of analysis, it is necessary to achieve the most accurate measurements possible. Measuring the precision that a projector-camera-object arrangement can achieve is a complex task. In this paper, we show an experimental method used to measure the accuracy of this technique with instrumentation within the reach of most conservation laboratories. The method consists of capturing, as a reference model, a stepped cylindrical Nylamid® pyramid, as a construction whose shape, size, and manufacturing accuracy are known with high precision. The pyramid has eight well-defined steps, which are fashioned with an accuracy more exact than that of the fringe projection method. The height of each step was measured, obtaining the mean and variance of the height measurements fitted to a Gaussian distribution. In this work, we show the measured heights of the steps, obtained by varying the period of the fringes. The smallest detectable step height was less than 44.1 µm; however, this was obtained with a variance in the order of the step height. The smallest detectable step height with a small variance was 0.1008 mm. In addition to this accuracy measurement, a qualitative evaluation of a painting was carried out, finding the presence of possible superimposed thin layers, fabric, and microcracks, which commonly occur in the drying and aging processes. Further research would provide an experimental measurement of the method's accuracy and its variance as essential for obtaining a confidence criterion that could then be applied to the model of the painting's surface. Abstract

A theoretical analysis of fringe patterns and its experimental corroboration obtained by multiplication of two speckled images with electronic speckle-pattern interferometry (ESPI) are reported. A specifically designed digital filter is used to enhance the contrast and visibility of the inherently noisy multiplication fringes. Phase retrieval is achieved by a phase-stepping technique. Experimental results are presented for the in-plane-sensitive optical ESPI setup; however, out-of-plane and shearing setups may be used as well. Abstract

Abstract: A novel three Gaussian beam interferometric technique for profiling optical smooth surfaces is presented. The technique is based on the heterodinization of three Gaussian beams, two of them with the same temporal frequency. The first beam is used as a probe beam after being focused and reflected from the surface under test. The second beam is reflected from a reference surface. The third beam is obtained from the first diffraction order of a Bragg cell and thus, it is shifted in its temporal frequency. The three beams are coherently added at the sensitive plane of a photodetector that integrates the overall intensity of the beams. We show analytically that the electrical signal at the output of the photodetector consists of a temporal carrier whose amplitude is a sinusoidal function of the local topography. We include the measurement of the topography of a sample consisting in a blazed-reflecting grating calibrated by means of an atomic force microscope. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

We describe a method that uses coherent Gaussian illumination for the interferometric measurement of roughness and shape of flat optical surfaces. This method allows varying the size of the area under examination of the surface under test without changing any components in the setup. For this, it is only necessary to adjust the position of one of the illuminating lenses of the system. Once the setup has been assembled, additional optical components are not necessary for examining different object areas; thus, diffraction effects that would be introduced by including additional components are avoided. A calculation of the diffraction due to the propagation of the beams through the system is presented to evaluate the precision of the method. For illustrative purposes the measurement of two different areas of an optical flat using a Michelson-type setup is presented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
