Abstract

Nonlocal strain gradient continuum mechanics is a methodology widely employed in literature to assess size effects in nanostructures. Notwithstanding this, improper higher-order boundary conditions (HOBC) are prescribed to close the corresponding elastostatic problems. In the present study, it is proven that HOBC have to be replaced with univocally determined boundary conditions of constitutive type, established by a consistent variational formulation. The treatment, developed in the framework of torsion of elastic beams, provides an effective approach to evaluate scale phenomena in smaller and smaller devices of engineering interest. Both elastostatic torsional responses and torsional free vibrations of nano-beams are investigated by applying a simple analytical method. It is also underlined that the nonlocal strain gradient model, if equipped with the inappropriate HOBC, can lead to torsional structural responses which unacceptably do not exhibit nonlocality. The presented variational strategy is instead able to characterize significantly peculiar softening and stiffening behaviours of structures involved in modern Nano-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (NEMS).

Abstract

Size-dependent longitudinal and torsional vibrations of nano-beams are examined by two-phase mixture integral elasticity. A new and efficient elastodynamic model is conceived by convexly combining the local phase with strain- and stress-driven purely nonlocal phases. The proposed stress-driven nonlocal integral mixture leads to well-posed structural problems for any value of the scale parameter. Effectiveness of stress-driven mixture is illustrated by analyzing axial and torsional free vibrations of cantilever and doubly clamped nano-beams. The local/nonlocal integral mixture is conveniently replaced with an equivalent differential law equipped with higher-order constitutive boundary conditions. Exact solutions of fundamental natural frequencies associated with strain- and stress-driven mixtures are evaluated and compared with counterpart results obtained by strain gradient elasticity theory. The provided new numerical benchmarks can be effectively employed for modelling and design of Nano-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (NEMS).

Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are principal constituents of nanocomposites and nano-systems. CNT size-dependent response assessment is therefore a topic of current interest in Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures. CNTs are modeled here by a variationally consistent nonlocal strain gradient approach for Timoshenko nano-beams, extending the treatment in [Int. J. Eng. Science 143 (2019) 73–91] confined to slender structures. Scale effects are described by integral convolutions, conveniently replaced with differential and boundary nonlocal laws. The theoretical predictions, exploited to analytically estimate the reduced Young elastic modulus of CNTs, are validated by molecular dynamics simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Size-dependent buckling of compressed Bernoulli-Euler nano-beams is investigated by stress-driven nonlocal continuum mechanics. The nonlocal elastic strain is obtained by convoluting the stress field with a suitable smoothing kernel. Incremental equilibrium equations are established by a standard perturbation technique. Higher-order constitutive boundary conditions are naturally inferred by the stress-driven nonlocal integral convolution, equipped with the special bi-exponential kernel. Buckling loads of compressed nano-beams, with kinematic boundary constraints of applicative interest, are numerically calculated and compared with those obtained by the theory of strain gradient elasticity. Abstract

In elastic continuous structures defined on bounded domains, Eringen strain-driven integral model leads to ill-posed elastostatic problems since the constitutive stress field, got by convoluting the elastic strain field with an averaging kernel, conflicts with equilibrium requirements. The innovative stress-driven integral model, recently proposed in literature, is instead able to overcome inconsistencies of Eringen theory. In the present paper, size-dependent free vibrations of nano-rods are investigated by adopting the stress-driven nonlocal model equipped with Helmholtz kernel. Natural frequencies and mode shapes of nano-rods are established by an effective analytical solution strategy and are compared with those obtained by strain gradient theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The bending problem of micro and nanobeams based on the Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory and gradient elastic model is addressed. The variational formulations associated with the two models are consistently provided starting from the free energy. Then the governing differential equations and the related boundary conditions are derived. Exact solutions for deflection, rotation and stress fields are presented for a transversely loaded nanobeam.

Abstract

To analyze risk factors for type 2 diabetes among women attending menopause clinics in Italy for counselling about the menopause.Women attending a network of first-level outpatient menopause clinics in Italy for general counselling about menopause or treatment of menopausal symptoms.Cross-sectional study with no exclusion criteria. Type 2 diabetes was defined according to National Diabetes Data Groups Indications and the fasting blood glucose at an oral glucose tolerance test within the previous year.Out of the 44 694 considered in this analysis, 808 had a diagnosis of diabetes type 2 (1.8%). In comparison with women aged50 years, the multivariate odds ratios (OR) of type 2 diabetes were 1.31 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.99-1.74) for women aged 50-52 years, 1.66 (95% CI, 1.27-2.17) at 53-56 years and 2.84 (95% CI, 2.20-3.67) in women agedor = 57 years. Type 2 diabetes was less frequently reported in more educated women (OR high school/university vs. primary school = 0.44 (95% CI, 0.36-0.55)). Being overweight was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In comparison with women reporting a low level of physical activity, the multivariate OR of type 2 diabetes was 0.67 (95% CI, 0.54-0.84) for women reporting regular physical activity. In comparison with premenopausal women, the multivariate OR of type 2 diabetes was 1.38 (95% CI, 1.03-1.84) in women with natural menopause. This finding was present also after allowing for the potential confounding effect of age. The multivariate OR of diabetes for users of hormonal replacement therapy was 0.58 (95% CI, 0.46-0.73).This large cross-sectional study suggests that postmenopausal women are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes after allowance for the effect of age. Other main determinants of risk of type 2 diabetes in women around menopause were low socioeconomic status and being overweight. Diabetes was found less frequently in those taking hormone replacement therapy.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To obtain data on correlates of climacteric symptoms in women around menopause attending menopause clinics in Italy. METHODS Since 1997 a large cross sectional study has been conducted on the characteristics of women around menopause attending a network of first level menopause outpatient's clinics in Italy. A total of 66,501 (mean age 54.4 years) women are considered in the present paper. RESULTS The odds ratios of moderate and severe hot flashes/night sweats were lower in more educated women and (for severe symptoms only) in women reporting regular physical activity. Depression, difficulty to sleep, forgetfulness and irritability tended to be less frequent in more educated women and (depression only) in women reporting regular physical activity. Parous women reported more frequently these symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This large study confirms in Southern European population that low education, body mass index and low physical activity are associated with climacteric symptoms. Parous women are at greater risk of psychological symptoms.

Abstract

Computational methods, for large displacements of continua in the elastoplastic range, rely on the mathematical modeling of the nonlinear constitutive behavior. In last decades an increasing favor has been deserved to nonlinear models based on a chain decomposition of the deformation gradient. The troubles involved in a structural analysis based on this model are well-known and have not been overcome although many efforts devoted to this end. Our investigation towards a more satisfactory model starts from the new analysis of the rate elastic behavior performed in [1, 2] since the difficulties faced by previous formulations were the very motivation for the discard of rate constitutive models in elasto-plasticity [3]. The new definition of hypo-elasticity, the detection of simple integrability conditions and a new formulation of conservativeness, lead to a definition of rate elasticity suitable for an effective modeling of rate elasto-plastic constitutive behaviors [4]. The treatment is based on a geometric definition of spatial and material fields and on the statement of a geometric paradigm assessing the rules for comparison of material fields naturally provided by push-pull according to the relevant transformation. The rates involved in constitutive relations are Lie-derivatives of stress field and constitutive parameters. Geometric compatibility requires that elastic and plastic stretchings additively give the Lie-derivative of metric field. No privileged reference configuration is involved and no consequent multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient is assumed. Computational methods are shown to be based on the pull-back of constitutive relations to a straightened out trajectory segment which plays the role of computation chamber wherein linear operations of differentiation and integration may be performed. Accordingly, finite elastic and plastic stretches are considered as purely computational tools with no physical interpretation in constitutive relations. Both 3-D and lower dimensional structural models, such as wires and membranes, may be analysed by a direct application of the theory. The outcome is a significant improvement of physical insight and computational effectiveness with respect to previous treatments of finite elasto-plasticity.

Abstract

To analyze the sexuality of Italian menopausal women.Cross-sectional study.Menopausal women consecutively observed during the study period in menopause clinics.Women were interviewed about their current and premenopausal sexual activity: sexual intercourse frequency and self-rated sexual desire, capacity for orgasm and sexual satisfaction were recorded. Women were defined as having poor sexual functioning if they had one or less sexual intercourses per week or answered 'absent/poor' to the questions about the sexual domains.Oral hormone therapy (HT) use (odds ratio (OR) 0.43 for desire, 0.54 for orgasm and 0.56 for overall sexual satisfaction, all p0.001) and transdermal HT (OR 0.38, 0.53 and 0.53, respectively, all p0.001) were significantly associated with lower risk of poor sexual functioning. Higher physical and mental component scores (PCS and MCS, range 0-100) of the Short Form-12 are inversely related to poor sexual functioning (OR by point 0.96, 0.95, 0.95 for PCS and 0.96, 0.96 and 0.95, for MCS, respectively, all p0.001). Pain during and symptoms after sexual intercourse were significantly related to desire (OR 1.96 and 1.78, respectively), orgasm (OR 2.22 and 2.06, respectively) and sexual satisfaction (OR 2.02 and 1.79, respectively). The partner's health problems were associated with low sexual intercourse frequency (OR 4.18, p0.001) and absent/poor overall satisfaction (OR 2.61, p0.001).This study shows that, in menopausal Italian women attending menopause clinics, sexual function is associated with the quality of sexual life in reproductive age, partner's health status, current quality of life, HT and occurrence of pain during and symptoms after sexual intercourse.

Abstract

It is well-known that the classical linear theory of heat conduction, based on Fourier's law for the thermal flux, predicts that a thermal effects at a point of a body is felt instantly at other points of the body. Therefore in past years several alternative theories of heat conduction have been proposed. In this paper we consider the non-classical theory of thermoelasticity developed by Green and Naghdi (1977) which incorporates the approach based on Fourier's law (referred to as type I), the theory without energy dissipation (type II) and a theory which allows finite wave propagation as well as energy dissipation (type III). Contributions on the Green and Naghdi (GN) approach can be found, among others, in Bargmann and Steinmann (2006) and references therein. An analytical treatment of coupled thermoelastic problems is complex so that the development of alternative methods of analysis turns out to be important. Accordingly variational formulations of such problems can be of great interest from a theoretical point of view and from a computational standpoint since they are the foundation to develop mixed finite elements. In the present paper we treat the non-classical thermoelastic problem following the GN model of type II. The purpose of the contribution is to provide a constitutive model of thermoelasticity coupled with plasticity suitable to formulate variational formulations (see e.g. Marotti de Sciarra, 2009 for nonlocal problems) in order to consistently derive a finite element approach and the related algorithmic procedure. The coupled thermoelastic model with plasticity is formulated in a geometrically linear range and is based on the internal variable theories of inelastic behaviours of associative type.

Abstract

A consistent nonlocal viscoelastic beam model is proposed in this paper. Specifically, a Timoshenko bending problem, where size- and time-dependent effects cannot be neglected, is investigated. In order to inspect scale phenomena, a stress-driven nonlocal formulation is used, whereas to simulate time-dependent effects, fractional linear viscoelasticity is considered. These two approaches are adopted to develop a new Timoshenko bending model. Analytical solutions and application samples of the proposed formulation are presented. Moreover, in order to show influences of viscoelastic and size effects on mechanical response, parametric analyses are provided. The contributed results can be useful for the design and optimization of small-scale devices exhibiting flexural behaviour.

Abstract

The virtual power principle (VPP) of continuum mechanics states a celebrated variational equality between external and internal virtual powers for any virtual velocity field conforming with linear kinematic constraints. The topic is here addressed to investigate how the original ideas born in the early XIX century are modelled by modern formulations based on Functional Analysis and Differential Geometry. These notions are able to provide an effective mathematical context for proving existence of Lagrange multipliers associated with the constraint of rigidity on velocity fields. The VPP stands as privileged tool for giving to stress fields a consistent definition based on duality with conforming virtual stretching fields. By complementarity, the VPP generates a variational condition for integrability of stretching fields, with self-equilibrated stresses as test fields. Progress is got by the formulation of the rate virtual power principle (RVPP) by time derivation of the VPP along the motion, with internal virtual power integrated per unit mass. The basic distinction between spatial and material fields according to the geometric paradigm is prompted to replace the one previously adopted in the literature. The need for a non-redundant implicit formulation of the rigidity constraint is emphasised to contrast degeneracy. This logical demand avoids proliferation of multipliers, in the spirit of Ockham’s Razor, a celebrated philosophical motto with multiform applications. The shining mathematical theory set out by Leonhard Euler, Jean-Baptiste Le Rond d’Alembert, Joseph Louis Lagrange, and Augustin Cauchy is in this respect a point of optimality. A geometric rate theory of elasticity meets the call for no-dissipation in push-closed elastic cycles, with non need of any finite strain elastic energy functional, thus leading to a proper statement of rate equilibrium problems, basilar for computational formulations and for investigations about instability phenomena and post-critical behaviours.

Abstract

A challenging task in nonlocal continuum mechanics consists in formulating constitutive relations leading to well-posed structural problems. Several strategies have been adopted to overcome issues inherent applicability of Eringen’s pure nonlocal theory to nanostructures, such as local/nonlocal mixtures of elasticity and integral models involving modified averaging kernels. These strategies can be applied to the ill-posed problem of flexure of a beam on Wieghardt nonlocal foundation without considering any fictitious boundary forces of constitutive type. A consistent formulation of nonlocal elastic foundation underlying a Bernoulli–Euler beam is thus conceived in the present paper by requiring that transverse displacements are convex combination of reaction-driven local and nonlocal phases governed by Winkler and Wieghardt laws, respectively. The proposed integral mixture is proven to be equivalent to a more convenient differential problem, equipped with nonlocal boundary conditions, which can be effectively exploited to solve nonlocal problems of beams resting on mixture reaction-driven continuous foundation. Effectiveness of the developed nonlocal approach is illustrated by analytically solving simple elasto-static problems of structural mechanics.

Abstract

The size-dependent behaviour of nonlocal elastic beams is investigated exploiting the Bernoulli- Euler theory. The stress-driven two-phase integral elasticity is adopted to properly capture size effects. Biaxial bending is considered and an effective coordinate-free solution procedure is proposed. The corresponding governing equations of nonlocal elasticity are established and discussed. The contributed theoretical outcomes could be useful for the implementation of computational procedures for design and optimization of small-scale electromechanical systems.

Abstract

The bending behaviour of systems of straight elastic beams at different scales is investigated by the well-posed stress-driven nonlocal continuum mechanics. An effective computational methodology, based on nonlocal two-noded finite elements, is developed in order to take accurately into account long-range interactions present in the whole structural domain. The idea consists in partitioning the beam in subdomains and in observing that the nonlocal stress-driven convolution integral, equipped with the Helmholtz averaging kernel, can be equivalently formulated by expressing nonlocal bending interaction fields in terms of zero-th and second-order derivatives of elastic curvature fields which have to fulfil appropriate non-classical constitutive boundary and interface conditions. Relevant mesh-dependent shape functions governing the FEM technique are analytically detected. Each element is characterized by shape functions whose number is equal to four times the number of elements of the considered mesh. A simple analytical strategy to obtain nonlocal stiffness matrices and equivalent nodal forces of a finite element is exposed. The global nonlocal stiffness matrix is got by assembling the nonlocal element stiffness matrices accounting for long-range interactions among the elements. The proposed numerical approach is examined by exactly solving exemplar nonlocal case-problems of current interest in nano-engineering. The presented nonlocal strategy extends previous contributions on the matter and offers designers a consistent computational tool.

Abstract

Nonlocal hereditariness in Bernoulli–Euler beam is investigated in this paper. An approach to solve that problem is proposed and some analytical solutions are provided. To this aim, time-dependent hereditary behavior is modeled by means of non-integer order operators of the fractional linear viscoelasticity. While, space-dependent nonlocal phenomena are simulated through the integral stress-driven formulation. These two approaches are combined providing a new model able to simulate nonlocal viscoelastic bending problem. Several application samples of the proposed formulation and a thorough parametric study are presented showing the influences of hereditariness and nonlocal effects on the mechanical bending response. Proposed formulation can be useful for design and optimization of structures used in advanced applications when local elastic theory cannot be adopted.

Abstract

Small-scale beams are basic structural components of miniaturized electro-mechanical systems whose design requires accurate modeling of size effects. In this research, the size-dependent behavior of nonlocal elastic beams is investigated by adopting the stress-driven elasticity theory. Kinematics of beams is modeled by the Reddy variational third-order beam theory accounting for the effective distribution of shear stresses on cross sections without needing the evaluation of shear correction factors. Stress-driven integral elasticity is thus extended to third-order small-scale beams providing an equivalent constitutive formulation with boundary conditions. The relevant nonlocal elastic equilibrium problem is formulated and an analytical strategy is proposed to obtain closed-form solutions. The present approach is elucidated by solving some structural problems of current interest in Nanotechnology.

Abstract

In this article, eigenfrequencies of nano-beams under axial loads are assessed by making recourse to the well-posed stress-driven nonlocal model (SDM) and strain-driven two-phase local/nonlocal formulation (NstrainG) of elasticity and Bernoulli-Euler kinematics. The developed nonlocal methodology is applicable to a wide variety of nano-engineered materials, such as carbon nanotubes, and modern small-scale beam-like devices of nanotechnological interest. Eigenfrequencies calculated using SDM, are compared with NstrainG and other pertinent results in literature obtained by other nonlocal strategies. Influence of nonlocal thermoelastic effects and initial axial force (tension and compression) on dynamic responses are analyzed and discussed. Model hardening size effects from stress-driven approach is compared to model softening size effects from strain-driven two-phase local/nonlocal approach for increasing nonlocal parameters.

Abstract

In the paper ( Zaera, Serrano, & Fernandez-Saez, 2019 ) it is claimed that the nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) leads to ill-posed structural problems. This conclusion was motivated by observing that Constitutive Boundary Conditions (CBC) conflict with non-standard Kinematic and Static Higher-Order Boundary Conditions (KHOBC) - (SHOBC). In the present study, it is shown that no ill-posedness holds if NSGT is established by an adequate variational formulation, with appropriate test fields. KHOBC and SHOBC have nothing to do with the proper mathematical formulation and thus they have not to be prescribed, while standard kinematic and static boundary conditions and CBC have to be imposed to close the relevant nonlocal gradient problem. This conclusion follows from a well-posed abstract variational scheme conceived for nonlocal gradient inflected beams. The treatment provides as special cases most of the size-dependent models adopted in Engineering Science to assess size-effects in nanostructures, such as NSGT, strain-driven and stress-driven local-nonlocal elasticity approaches. Additionally, a well-posed Nonlocal Stress Gradient (NStressG) model is presented, coupling the stress-driven nonlocal strategy (Romano and Barretta, 2017) with the stress gradient elasticity. The presented methodology is elucidated and validated by investigating the structural behavior of a variety of inflected nano-beams of nanotechnological interest, such as sensors and actuators. NStressG is able to predict both softening and hardening nonlocal responses and, unlike the special stress gradient elasticity model, leads to well-posed structural problems in Nanomechanics.

Abstract

In this paper, the size-dependent static behavior of Bishop rods is investigated by Lam and Aifantis strain gradient formulations of elasticity. Appropriate constitutive boundary conditions are established for both the theories by making recourse to a variational approach. Unlike contributions of literature, no higher-order kinematic and static boundary conditions, which have not a clear physical meaning, are required to close the relevant gradient problems. The proposed methodology leads to mathematically well-posed elastostatic problems and is illustrated by examining size effects in selected thick rods of nanotechnological interest. Exact solutions of Bishop nano-rods are detected for a variety of loading systems and kinematic boundary conditions. Peculiar properties, merits, and implications of both the strain gradient formulations, equipped with the proper boundary conditions, are illustrated and commented. The outcomes can be useful for the design and optimization of rod-like thick components of nanoelectromechanical systems.
