AimFunctional traits shape the distribution of taxa across environments. However, it remains unclear whether trait and environmental niche evolution are correlated, and what happened first: trait change facilitating environment shifts (pre-adaptation) or environmental change leading to trait change (adaptation). We focus on a species-rich Neotropical legume radiation to shed light on this enigma.LocationNeotropics.Time PeriodCenozoic.Major Taxa StudiedFabaceae: Papilionoidae: Swartzia.MethodsWe assembled leaflet, fruit and petal size data from monographs and herbarium collections for 86 to 96% of the c. 180 Swartzia species, inferred a dated Swartzia phylogenetic tree from existing DNA sequences covering 38% of the species and integrated these with distribution, soil and climate data. We used phylogenetic linear regression to quantify trait–environment relationships and applied comparative methods to evaluate modes of correlated evolution between traits and environments.ResultsLeaflet and petal size were strongly linked to climate, while fruit size was not associated with climate or soil characteristics. Evolutionary transitions to relatively low rainfall and low temperature environments were conditional on the evolution of small leaflets, whereas transitions to wet and warm environments were preceded by the evolution of larger leaflets. In contrast, transitions to the warmest or coldest environments were followed, rather than preceded, by petal loss.Main ConclusionOur results show that the macroevolution of functional traits has influenced the broad-scale distribution of Swartzia across Neotropical rainforest, seasonally dry, montane and inundated habitats. We suggest that trait evolution is conditional on environmental change but both pre-adaptive and adaptive processes may occur. These processes are important to understand the distribution of diversity at both regional (e.g. Amazonia) and global biogeographical scales.

This work is based on a workshop funded by iDiv via the German Research Foundation (DFG FZT 118 and 202548816). National and local governments need to step up efforts to effectively implement the post-2020 global biodiversity framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity to halt and reverse worsening biodiversity trends. Drawing on recent advances in interdisciplinary biodiversity science, we propose a framework for improved implementation by national and subnational governments. First, the identification of actions and the promotion of ownership across stakeholders need to recognize the multiple values of biodiversity and account for remote responsibility. Second, cross-sectorial implementation and mainstreaming should adopt scalable and multifunctional ecosystem restoration approaches and target positive futures for nature and people. Third, assessment of progress and adaptive management can be informed by novel biodiversity monitoring and modeling approaches handling the multidimensionality of biodiversity change. Publisher PDF

The taxonomic validity of the East African reed frogs Hyperolius mitchelli Loveridge, 1953 and Hyperolius rubrovermiculatus Schiøtz, 1975 has been questioned in the literature, with the latter having been recognised as a distinct lineage, but also synonymised as a colour variant of H. mitchelli. The recent description of a new closely related congener from Mozambique, Hyperolius stictus (Conradie et al., 2018), along with evidence of genetic differentiation within H. mitchelli has suggested that this widely distributed species might be a species complex. In this study, we reassess the relationships of these closely related species with new field sampling, molecular, morphological and bioacoustics analyses with the aim to assign the correct taxonomic identity to H. cf. mitchelli from northern Tanzania. Our results demonstrate that there are four distinct lineages within this group: H. stictus from Mozambique; H. rubrovermiculatus from southern Kenya; H. mitchelli sensu stricto from central and southern Tanzania and Malawi and H. cf. mitchelli from north-eastern Tanzania. Based on our combined analyses we assign H. cf. mitchelli as a new population of H. rubrovermiculatus with distinct colouration, extending the range of this species from Kenya into northern Tanzania. We also clarify the genetic, morphological and acoustic variation within and between all lineages to further knowledge of this group and provide direction for future study into this fragmented and variable lineage.

We present the first annotated amphibian checklist of Shimba Hills National Reserve (SHNR). The list comprises of 30 currently known amphibians (28 anurans and two caecilians), which includes 11 families and 15 genera. In addition, individual records per species, distribution in the reserve and brief remarks about the species are presented. The checklist is based on information from museum collections, field guides, unpublished reports and newly collected field data. We are able to confirm the presence of two Eastern Afromontane species in the SHNR: Scolecomorphus cf. vittatus and Callulina cf. kreffti. The latter has not been recorded since the original collection of a single specimen over 50 years ago. SHNR contains the highest number of amphibian species of any known locality in Kenya (about 30% of the country’s total number); therefore it is of national conservation importance. Finally, we briefly discuss the biogeography of the SHNR and its connections to nearby biogeographic regions.Keywords: coastal forests, checklist, zoogeography, amphibians, Shimba Hills

The earth is in the midst of a sixth major extinction crisis with biodiversity highly threatened by climate change at global scales. Biodiversity is crucial to humans due to the ecosystem functioning and services it provides, and therefore the conservation of biodiversity is paramount to human prosperity in in the future. This PhD thesis uses amphibians to examine biodiversity patterns across the Coastal Forests of Eastern Africa (CFEA), a global biodiversity hotspot. The CFEA comprises of a network of tiny fragmented forest patches thought to be the remnants of a once widespread tropical forest that spanned across tropical Africa from West to East prior to major tectonic activity in the Miocene. The gradual aridification of the African continent since then, combined with significant climate and sea level oscillations during the Pliocene and Pleistocene contributed to the natural fragmentation of the CFEA, but human impacts have severely accelerated the pace of forest loss. The work in this thesis integrates field work, taxonomy, morphology, molecular techniques and spatial data to measure biodiversity across the CFEA, explain its distribution and provide a conceptual framework in which this data can be usefully applied for future conservation efforts. A broad scale DNA barcoding project forms the basis of all work in the thesis, assimilating museum specimens and archived spatial records with newly collected data from recent fieldwork to create the most thorough inventory of the CFEA amphibians currently known. Chapter 1 focuses on the use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data for five widespread species clades to estimate phylogeny and population structure, genetic distances between populations, and explain these patterns using long-term environmental data. Chapter 2 maps the spatial distribution of evolutionary history measured from phylogenetic branch lengths for multiple intraspecific lineages within species, highlighting places which appear to be refugia and examining their environmental correlates and conservation. Chapter 3 uses close to the full assemblage of Tanzania and Kenya (55 species) to categorize the types of endemism present, distinguishing areas that are ‘museums’ supporting ancient diversity (paleo-endemism) from ‘cradles’ that support recently evolved diversity (neo-endemism). Chapter 4 combines morphological, genetic and spatial data to describe a new endemic species of treefrog, Hyperolius ruvuensis, from a highly threatened reserve in coastal Tanzania. A synthesis chapter summarises the work in the thesis and outlines new directions for CFEA conservation.

Paleoclimate reconstructions have enhanced our understanding of how past climates have shaped present-day biodiversity. We hypothesize that the geographic extent of Pleistocene forest refugia and suitable habitat fluctuated significantly in time during the late Quaternary for chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Using bioclimatic variables representing monthly temperature and precipitation estimates, past human population density data, and an extensive database of georeferenced presence points, we built a model of changing habitat suitability for chimpanzees at fine spatio-temporal scales dating back to the Last Interglacial (120,000 BP). Our models cover a spatial resolution of 0.0467 degrees (approximately 5.19 km(2) grid cells) and a temporal resolution of between 1000 and 4000 years. Using our model, we mapped habitat stability over time using three approaches, comparing our modeled stability estimates to existing knowledge of Afrotropical refugia, as well as contemporary patterns of major keystone tropical food resources used by chimpanzees, figs (Moraceae), and palms (Arecacae). Results show habitat stability congruent with known glacial refugia across Africa, suggesting their extents may have been underestimated for chimpanzees, with potentially up to approximately 60,000 km(2) of previously unrecognized glacial refugia. The refugia we highlight coincide with higher species richness for figs and palms. Our results provide spatio-temporally explicit insights into the role of refugia across the chimpanzee range, forming the empirical foundation for developing and testing hypotheses about behavioral, ecological, and genetic diversity with additional data. This methodology can be applied to other species and geographic areas when sufficient data are available.
