Intertextuality is a key concept in literary theory that challenges traditional notions of text, signification or authorship. It views texts as part of a vast intertextual network that is constantly evolving and being reconfigured. This paper argues that the field of computational literary studies is the ideal place to conduct a study of intertextuality since we have now the ability to systematically compare texts with each others. Specifically, we present a work on a corpus of more than 12.000 French fictions from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. We focus on evaluating the underlying roles of two literary notions, sub-genres and the literary canon in the framing of textuality. The article attempts to operationalize intertextuality using state-of-the-art contextual language models to encode novels and capture features that go beyond simple lexical or thematic approaches. Previous research (Hughes, 2012) supports the existence of a literary "style of a time", and our findings further reinforce this concept. Our findings also suggest that both subgenres and canonicity play a significant role in shaping textual similarities within French fiction. The determination of the fraction of energy deposited in the coolant is required for the setup of accurate thermal-hydraulic calculations in reactor core analysis. This study focuses on assessing this fraction and analysing the neutronic and photonic processes contributing to energy deposition in Lead-cooled Fast Reactors (LFRs). Using OpenMC, coupled neutron-photon transport calculations were performed within a fuel pin cell geometry, representative of the one under development at \textsl{new}cleo. Additionally, the implementation of lattice geometry was tested to gauge the impact of reflective boundary conditions on computational efficiency. In the context of a surface-based algorithm, the pin geometry has proven to be computationally more cost-effective. The fraction of energy deposited in the LFR coolant was evaluated at $\sim5.6$\%, surpassing that of pressurised water Reactors ($\lessapprox 3\%$), with photon interactions emerging as the principal contributor. The influence of bremsstrahlung radiation was also considered, revealing minor impact compared to other photonic processes. Given the continuous exploration of various core designs and the expectation of diverse operational conditions, a parametric analysis was undertaken by varying the coolant temperature and pitch values. Temperature changes did not significantly affect the results, while modifying the pitch induced a rise in the fraction of deposited energy in lead, highlighting its dependence on the coolant mass. This mass effect was explored in various fuel assembly designs based on the ALFRED benchmark and on the typical assembly model proposed by \textsl{new}cleo, leading to a correlation function for the prediction of coolant heating in realistic assemblies from simple pin cell calculations.

The unique characteristics of the brightest group galaxies (BGGs) link the evolutionary continuum between galaxies like the Milky Way and more massive BCGs in dense clusters. This study investigates the stellar properties of BGGs over cosmic time (z = 0.08-1.30), extending our previous work (Gozaliasl et al. 2016, 2018; Paper I and Paper II). We analyze data of 246 BGGs from our X-ray galaxy group catalog in the COSMOS field, examining stellar age, mass, star formation rate (SFR), specific SFR (sSFR), and halo mass. Comparisons are made with Millennium and Magneticum simulations. We explore the variation of stellar properties with the projected offset from the X-ray peak or host halo center. Using a mock galaxy catalog, we evaluated the accuracy of SED-derived stellar ages, finding a mean absolute error of about one Gyr. Observed BGG age distributions show a bias towards younger ages compared to semi-analytical models and the Magneticum simulation. Our analysis of stellar age versus mass reveals trends with a positive slope, suggesting complex evolutionary pathways across redshifts. We observe a negative correlation between stellar age and SFR across all redshift ranges. Using a cosmic-time-dependent main sequence framework, we identify star-forming BGGs, finding that about 20% of BGGs in the local universe exhibit star-forming characteristics, increasing to 50% at $z=1.0$. Our findings support an inside-out formation scenario for BGGs, where older stellar populations are near the X-ray peak and younger populations at larger offsets indicate ongoing star formation. Electrostrictive materials exhibit a strain that is proportional to the square of the induced polarization. In linear dielectrics where the permittivity is constant, this electromechanical strain is also proportional to the square of the electric field. However, under increasing amplitudes of the driving field, the electromechanical strain sometimes saturates; the electrostrictive coefficients therefore appear to depend on the amplitude of the electric field used to measure them. Here, we present a methodology showing that this apparent field dependence is a consequence of neglecting higher-order electromechanical phenomena. When these are taken into account, not only do the electrostrictive coefficients remain constant but the signs of the high-order coefficients enable the prediction of the saturation behavior from a single measurement. We illustrate this approach on both classical and non-classical (so-called ``giant'') electrostrictors.

Starting from a microscopic particle model whose hydrodynamic limit under hyperbolic space-time scaling is a 1D conservation law, we derive the large deviation rate function encoding the probability to observe a density profile which is a non entropic shock, and compare this large deviation rate function with the classical Jensen-Varadhan functional, valid for the totally asymmetric exclusion process and the weakly asymmetric exclusion process in the strong asymmetry limit. We find that these two functionals have no reason to coincide, and in this sense Jensen-Varadhan functional is not universal. However, they do coincide in a small Mach number limit, suggesting that universality is restored in this regime. While nanoalloys are of paramount scientific and practical interests, the main processes leading to their formation are still poorly understood. Key structural features in the alloy systems, including crystal phase, chemical ordering, and morphology, are challenging to control at the nanoscale, making it difficult to transfer their usage to industrial applications. In this contribution, we focus on the gold/silver system that has two of the most prevalent noble metals, and combine experiments with simulations to uncover the formation mechanisms at the atomic-level. Nanoparticles are produced using state-of-the-art inert-gas aggregation source and analyzed using transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Machine-learning-assisted molecular dynamics simulations are employed to model the crystallization process from liquid droplets to nanocrystals. Our study finds a preponderance of nanoparticles with five-fold symmetric morphology, including icosahedron and decahedron which is consistent with previous results on mono-metallic nanoparticles. However, we observe that gold atoms, rather than silver atoms, segregate at the surface of the obtained nanoparticles for all the considered alloy compositions. These segregation tendencies are in contrast to previous studies and have consequences on the crystallization dynamics and the subsequent crystal ordering. We finally show that the underpinnings of this surprising segregation dynamics is due to charge transfer and electrostatic interactions rather than surface energy considerations.

The offline software framework of the LHCb experiment has undergone a significant overhaul to tackle the data processing challenges that will arise in the upcoming Run 3 and Run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider. This paper introduces FunTuple, a novel component developed for offline data processing within the LHCb experiment. This component enables the computation and storage of a diverse range of observables for both reconstructed and simulated events by leveraging on the tools initially developed for the trigger system. This feature is crucial for ensuring consistency between trigger-computed and offline-analysed observables. The component and its tool suite offer users flexibility to customise stored observables, and its reliability is validated through a full-coverage set of rigorous unit tests. The ability to accurately predict the contrast achieved from high contrast imagers is important for efficient scheduling and quality control measures in modern observatories. We aim to consistently predict and measure the raw contrast achieved by SPHERE/IRDIS on a frame by frame basis to improve the efficiency and scientific yield with SPHERE at the Very Large Telescope (VLT).Contrast curves were calculated for over 5 years of archival data using the most common SPHERE/IRDIS coronagraphic mode in the H2/H3 dual band filter, consisting of approximately 80,000 individual frames. These were merged and interpolated with atmospheric data to create a large data-base of contrast curves with associated features. An empirical power law model for contrast, motivated by physical considerations, was then trained and finally tested on an out-of-sample test data set. At an angular separation of 300 mas, the contrast model achieved a mean (out-of-sample) test error of 0.13 magnitudes with the residual 5-95% percentiles between -0.23 and 0.64 magnitude respectively. The models test set root mean square error (RMSE) between 250-600 mas was between 0.31 - 0.40 magnitudes which is equivalent with other state-of-the-art contrast models presented in the literature. In general, the model performed best for targets between 5-9 G-band magnitude, with degraded performance for targets outside this range. This model is currently being incorporated into the Paranal SCUBA software for first level quality control and real time scheduling support.

Optical photon propagation is an embarrassingly parallel operation, well suited to acceleration on GPU devices. Rendering of images employs similar techniques -- for this reason, a pipeline to offload optical photon propagation from Geant4 to the industry-standard open-source renderer Mitsuba3 has been devised. With the creation of a dedicated plugin for single point multi-source emission, we find a photon propagation rate of $2\times10^{5}$ photons per second per CPU thread using LLVM and $1.2\times10^{6}$ photons per second per GPU using CUDA. This represents a speed-up of 70 on CPU and 400 on GPU over Geant4 and is competitive with other similar applications. Motivated by applications in e-retail and online advertising, we study the problem of assortment optimization under visibility constraints, that we refer to as APV. We are given a universe of substitutable products and a stream of T customers. The objective is to determine the optimal assortment of products to offer to each customer in order to maximize the total expected revenue, subject to the constraint that each product is required to be shown to a minimum number of customers. The minimum display requirement for each product is given exogenously and we refer to these constraints as visibility constraints. We assume that customer choices follow a Multinomial Logit model (MNL). We provide a characterization of the structure of the optimal assortments and present an efficient polynomial time algorithm for solving APV. To accomplish this, we introduce a novel function called the ``expanded revenue" of an assortment and establish its supermodularity. Our algorithm takes advantage of this structural property. Additionally, we demonstrate that APV can be formulated as a compact linear program. Next, we consider APV with cardinality constraints, which we prove to be strongly NP-hard and not admitting a Fully Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (FPTAS), even in the special case where all the products have identical prices. Subsequently, we devise a Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (PTAS) for APV under cardinality constraints with identical prices. Our algorithm starts by linearizing the objective function through a carefully crafted guessing procedure, then solves the linearized program, and finally randomly rounds the obtained solution to derive a near optimal solution. We also examine the revenue loss resulting from the enforcement of visibility constraints, comparing it to the unconstrained version of the problem and propose a novel strategy to offset the loss.

Dynamic phase-only beam shaping with a liquid crystal spatial light modulator is a powerful technique for tailoring the beam's intensity profile or wave front. While shaping and controlling the light field is a highly researched topic, dynamic nonlinear beam shaping has hardly been explored so far. One potential reason is that generating the second harmonic is a degenerate process as it mixes two fields at the same frequency. To overcome this problem, we propose the use of type II phase matching as a control mechanism to distinguish the two involved fields. We experimentally demonstrate that arbitrary intensity distributions can be shaped in the frequency-converted field at the same quality as for linear beam shaping and with conversion efficiencies similar to the case without beam shaping. We envision this technique as a milestone towards beam shaping beyond the physical limits of liquid crystal displays, i.e. facilitating dynamic phase-only beam shaping in the ultraviolet spectral range.

Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) behavior in one-dimensional systems has been predicted and shown to occur at semiconductor-to-metal transitions within two-dimensional materials. Reports of mirror twin boundaries (MTBs) hosting a Fermi liquid or a TLL have suggested a dependence on the underlying substrate, however, unveiling the physical details of electronic contributions from the substrate require cross-correlative investigation. Here, we study TLL formation in MTBs within defectively engineered WS$_2$ atop graphene, where band structure and the atomic environment is visualized with nano angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and non-contact atomic force microscopy. Correlations between the local density of states and electronic band dispersion elucidated the electron transfer from graphene into a TLL hosted by MTB defects. In a Vlasov equation, the destabilization of a homogeneous stationary state is typically described by a continuous bifurcation characterized by strong resonances between the unstable mode and the continuous spectrum. However, when the reference stationary state has a flat top, it is known that resonances drastically weaken, and the bifurcation becomes discontinuous. In this article, we use a combination of analytical tools and precise numerical simulations to demonstrate that this behavior is related to a codimension-two bifurcation, which we study in details., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

This paper is composed of two parts. In the first part we consider McKean-Vlasov Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), obtained as thermodynamic limits of interacting particle systems (i.e. in the limit $N\to\infty$, where N is the number of particles). It is well-known that, even when the particle system has a unique invariant measure (stationary solution), the limiting PDE very often displays a phase transition: for certain choices of (coefficients and) parameter values, the PDE has a unique stationary solution, but as the value of the parameter varies multiple stationary states appear. In the first part of this paper, we add to this stream of literature and consider a specific instance of a McKean-Vlasov type equation, namely the Kuramoto model on the torus perturbed by a symmetric double-well potential, and show that this PDE undergoes the type of phase transition just described, as the diffusion coefficient is varied. In the second part of the paper, we consider a rather general class of McKean-Vlasov PDEs on the torus (which includes both the original Kuramoto model and the Kuramoto model in double well potential of part one) perturbed by (strong enough) infinite-dimensional additive noise. To the best of our knowledge, the resulting Stochastic PDE, which we refer to as the Stochastic McKean-Vlasov equation, has not been studied before, so we first study its well-posedness. We then show that the addition of noise to the PDE has the effect of restoring uniqueness of the stationary state in the sense that, irrespective of the choice of coefficients and parameter values in the McKean-Vlasov PDE, the Stochastic McKean-Vlasov PDE always admits at most one invariant measure., Comment: 50 pages

Light plays the central role in many applications. The key to unlocking its versatility lies in shaping it into the most appropriate form for the task at hand. Specifically tailored refractive index modifications, directly manufactured inside glass using a short pulsed laser, enable an almost arbitrary control of the light flow. However, the stringent requirements for quantitative knowledge of these modifications, as well as for fabrication precision, have so far prevented the fabrication of light-efficient aperiodic photonic volume elements (APVEs). Here we present a powerful approach to the design and manufacturing of light-efficient APVEs. We optimize application-specific 3D arrangements of hundred thousands of microscopic voxels and manufacture them using femtosecond direct laser writing inside millimeter-sized glass volumes. We experimentally achieve unprecedented diffraction efficiencies up to 80%, which is enabled by precise voxel characterization and adaptive optics during fabrication. We demonstrate APVEs with various functionalities, including a spatial mode converter and combined intensity shaping and wavelength-multiplexing. Our elements can be freely designed and are efficient, compact and robust. Our approach is not limited to borosilicate glass, but is potentially extendable to other substrates, including birefringent and nonlinear materials, giving a preview of even broader functionalities including polarization modulation and dynamic elements.

A R&D program is developed at the ALTO facility to provide new beams of exotic neutron-rich nuclei, as intense as possible. In the framework of European projects, it has been shown that the use of refractory targets with nanometric structure allows us to obtain beams of nuclei unreachable until now. The first parameter to be controlled in the processing to obtain targets with a homogeneous nanostructure is the grinding of uranium dioxide, down to 100 nm grain size. In this study, dry and wet grinding routes are studied and the powders are analyzed in terms of phase stabilization, specific surface area and grain morphology. It appears that the grinding, as well dry as wet, leads to the decrease of the particle size. The oxidation of UO2 is observed whatever the grinding. However, the dry grinding is the most efficient and leads to the oxidation of UO2 into U4O9 and U3O7 whose quantities increase with the grinding time while crystallite sizes decrease.

The optimization of the microstructure of the UCx target is a key point since many years in the field of ISOL method. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the release of the fission products, especially those with short half-lives. Fourteen UCx samples were synthetized from different uranium and carbon sources using three mixing protocols. All carburized samples were systematically characterized in terms of nature and proportion phases, grain and aggregate size, open and close porosity proportion and open pore size distribution. Our results were analysed using a multivariate statistical approach in order to remove any subjective bias. Strong correlations between the physicochemical characteristics of the samples as well as the impact of the synthesis process have been highlighted. In particular, using carbon nanotubes as carbon source combined with a new method of mixing is the key parameter to limit the sintering and to obtain samples with small grains and a high porosity well distributed over small pores. Moreover the microstructure obtained proved to be stable at high temperature.

Nowadays, intense exotic beams are needed in order to study nuclei with very short half-life. To increase the release efficiency of the fission products, all the target characteristics involved must be improved (e.g. chemical composition, dimensions, physicochemical properties such as grain size, porosity, density etc). In this article, we study the impact of the target thickness. Released fractions measured from graphite and uranium carbide pellets are presented as well as Monte-Carlo simulations of the Brownian motion.

We study the distribution of roots of rank 2 in nonpositively curved 2-complexes with Moebius--Kantor links. For every face in such a complex, the parity of the number of roots of rank 2 in a neighbourhood of the face is a well-defined geometric invariant determined by the root distribution. We study the relation between the root distribution and the parity distribution. We prove that there exist parity distributions in flats which are disallowed in Moebius--Kantor complexes. This contrasts with the fact that every root distribution can be realized. We classify the root distributions associated with an even parity distribution (i.e., such that every face is even) on a flat plane. We prove that there exists up to isomorphism a unique even simply connected Moebius--Kantor complex -- namely, the Pauli complex.

Kinetic and hydrodynamic theories are widely employed for describing the collective behaviour of active matter systems. At the fluctuating level, these have been obtained from explicit coarse-graining procedures in the limit where each particle interacts weakly with many others, so that the total forces and torques exerted on each of them is of order unity at all times. Such limit is however not relevant for dilute systems that mostly interact via alignment; there, collisions are rare and make the self-propulsion direction to change abruptly. We derive a fluctuating kinetic theory, and the corresponding fluctuating hydrodynamics, for aligning self-propelled particles in the limit of dilute systems. We discover that fluctuations at kinetic level are not Gaussian and depend on the interactions among particles, but that only their Gaussian part survives in the hydrodynamic limit. At variance with fluctuating hydrodynamics for weakly interacting particles, we find that the noise variance at hydrodynamic level depends on the interaction rules among particles and is proportional to the square of the density, reflecting the binary nature of the aligning process. The results of this paper, which are derived for polar self-propelled particles with polar alignment, could be straightforwardly extended to polar particles with nematic alignment or to fully nematic systems., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the large population dynamics of a family of stochastic particle systems with three-state cyclic individual behaviour and parameter-dependent transition rates. On short time scales, the dynamics turns out to be approximated by an integrable Hamiltonian system whose phase space is foliated by periodic trajectories. This feature suggests to consider the effective dynamics of the long-term process that results from averaging over the rapid oscillations. We establish the convergence of this process in the large population limit to the solutions of an explicit stochastic differential equation. Remarkably, this averaging phenomenon is complemented by the convergence of stationary measures. Adaptive optics (AO) is a powerful tool to increase the imaging depth of multiphoton scanning microscopes. For highly scattering tissues, sensorless wavefront correction techniques exhibit robust performance and present a straight-forward implementation of AO. However, for many applications such as live-tissue imaging, the speed of aberration correction remains a critical bottleneck. Dynamic Adaptive Scattering compensation Holography (DASH) -- a fast-converging sensorless AO technique introduced recently for scatter compensation in nonlinear scanning microscopy -- addresses this issue. DASH has been targeted at highly turbid media, but to-date it has remained an open question how it performs for mild turbidity, where limitations imposed by phase-only wavefront shaping are expected to impede its convergence. In this work, we study the performance of DASH across different turbidity regimes, in simulation as well as experiments. We further provide a direct comparison between DASH and a novel, modified version of the Continuous Sequential Algorithm (CSA) which we call Amplified CSA (a-CSA).

Photonics integrated circuitry would benefit considerably from the ability to arbitrarily control waveguide cross-sections with high precision and low loss, in order to provide more degrees of freedom in manipulating propagating light. Here, we report a new method for femtosecond laser writing of optical-fibre-compatible glass waveguides, namely spherical phase induced multi-core waveguide (SPIM-WG), which addresses this challenging task with three dimensional on-chip light control. Fabricating in the heating regime with high scanning speed, precise deformation of cross-sections is still achievable along the waveguide, with shapes and sizes finely controllable of high resolution in both horizontal and vertical transversal directions. We observed that these waveguides have high refractive index contrast of 0.017, low propagation loss of 0.14 dB/cm, and very low coupling loss of 0.19 dB coupled from a single mode fibre. SPIM-WG devices were easily fabricated that were able to perform on-chip beam rotation through varying angles, or manipulate polarization state of propagating light for target wavelengths. We also demonstrated SPIM-WG mode converters that provide arbitrary adiabatic mode conversion with high efficiency between symmetric and asymmetric non-uniform modes; examples include circular, elliptical modes and asymmetric modes from ppKTP (periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate) waveguides which are generally applied in frequency conversion and quantum light sources. Created inside optical glass, these waveguides and devices have the capability to operate across ultra-broad bands from visible to infrared wavelengths. Graded-index optical elements are capable of shaping light precisely and in very specific ways. While classical freeform optics uses only a two-dimensional domain such as the surface of a lens, recent technological advances in laser manufacturing offer promising prospects for the realization of arbitrary three-dimensional graded-index volumes, i.e. transparent dielectric substrates with voxel-wise modified refractive index distributions. Such elements would be able to perform complex light transformations on compact scales. Here we present an algorithmic approach for computing 3D graded-index devices, which utilizes numerical beam propagation and error reduction based on gradient descent. We present solutions for millimeter-sized elements addressing important tasks in photonics: a mode sorter, a photonic lantern and a multimode intensity beam shaper. We further discuss suitable cost functions for all designs to be used in the algorithm. The 3D graded-index designs are spatially smooth and require a relatively small refractive index range in the order of $10^{-2}$, which is within the reach of direct laser writing manufacturing processes such as two-photon polymerization.

We present an algorithm for holographic shaping of partially coherent light, bridging the gap between traditional coherent and geometric optical approaches. The description of partially coherent light relies on a mode expansion formalism, with possibly thousands of individual modes, and the inverse-design optimization algorithm is based on gradient descent with the help of algorithmic differentiation. We demonstrate numerically and experimentally that an optical system consisting of two phase patterns can potentially achieve any intensity profile transformation with good accuracy.

Interlayer excitons (ILXs) - electron-hole pairs bound across two atomically thin layered semiconductors - have emerged as attractive platforms to study exciton condensation, single-photon emission and other quantum-information applications. Yet, despite extensive optical spectroscopic investigations, critical information about their size, valley configuration and the influence of the moir\'e potential remains unknown. Here, we captured images of the time- and momentum-resolved distribution of both the electron and the hole that bind to form the ILX in a WSe2/MoS2 heterostructure. We thereby obtain a direct measurement of the interlayer exciton diameter of ~5.4 nm, comparable to the moir\'e unit-cell length of 6.1 nm. Surprisingly, this large ILX is well localized within the moir\'e cell to a region of only 1.8 nm - smaller than the size of the exciton itself. This high degree of localization of the interlayer exciton is backed by Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations and demonstrates that the ILX can be localized within small moir\'e unit cells. In this short note, we provide a simple version of an accelerated forward-backward method (a.k.a. Nesterov's accelerated proximal gradient method) possibly relying on approximate proximal operators and allowing to exploit strong convexity of the objective function. The method supports both relative and absolute errors, and its behavior is illustrated on a set of standard numerical experiments.
