Abstract

A new glaciological time-scale that is consistent with ocean records has been established for the Vostok station in Antarctica. Ice-core records which reveal local temperature, dust accumulation and air composition extend the glaciological time-scale to the penultimate glacial period, approximately 140,000 to 200,000 years ago. Vostok's penultimate glacial period was colder t the most recent one, and concentrations of carbon dioxide and CH4 correlate well in relation to temperature throughout the record.

Abstract

Gases trapped in polar ice provide our most direct record of the changes in greenhouse gas levels during the past 150,000 years. The best documented trace-gas records are for [CO.sub.2] and [CH.sub.4]. The measurements corresponding to the industrial period document the recent changes in growth rate. The variability observed over the last 1000 years constrains the possible feedbacks of a climate change on the trace gases under similar conditions as exist today. Changes in the levels of greenhouse gases during the glacial-interglacial cycle overall paralleled, at least at high southern latitudes, changes in temperature; this relation suggests that greenhouse gases play an important role as an amplifier of the initial orbital forcing of Earth's climate and also helps to assess the feedbacks on the biogeochemical cycles in a climate system in which the components are changing at different rates., Man has caused large increases in atmospheric concentrations of [CO.sub.2], [CH.sub.4], and [N.sub.2]O since 1800, and of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) since 1950. Abstract

Ice-core records of climate from Greenland and Antarctica show asynchronous temperature variations on millennial timescales during the last glacial period(1). The warming during the transition from glacial to interglacial conditions was markedly different between the hemispheres, a pattern attributed to the thermal bipolar see-saw(2). However, a record from the Ross Sea sector of East Antarctica has been suggested to be synchronous with Northern Hemisphere climate change(3). Here we present a temperature record from the Talos Dome ice core, also located in the Ross Sea sector. We compare our record with ice-core analyses from Greenland, based on methane synchronization(4), and find clearly asynchronous temperature changes during the deglaciation. We also find distinct differences in Antarctic records, pointing to differences in the climate evolution of the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic sectors of Antarctica. In the Atlantic sector, we find that the rate of warming slowed between 16,000 and 14,500 years ago, parallel with the deceleration of the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and with a slight cooling over Greenland. In addition, our chronology supports the hypothesis that the cooling of the Antarctic Cold Reversal is synchronous with the Bolling-Allerod warming in the northern hemisphere 14,700 years ago(5).

Abstract

International audience; The transformation of dry snow to firn is described by the transition between densification by deformationless restacking and densifiction by power-law creep. The observed decrease with temperature of the density at the snow-firn transition seems to result from the competition between grain-boundary sliding and power-law creep. These two densification processess occur concurrently in snow, although there are probably micro-regions in which sliding alone occurs. Validation of a geometrical densification model developped for ceramics has been obtained from densification data from several Antarctic and Groenland sites and from the characterization of the structure of polar firn.; La métamorphose de la neige sèche en névé est décrite par la transition entre la densification par tassement, déformation et la densification par fluage en loi puissance. La décroisssance observée de la densification avec la température et de la transition neige-névé semble résulter de la compétition entre le glissement aux joints de grain et le fluage en loi puissance. Ces deux processus de densification semble être concurrent dans la neige bien qu'il existe probablement des micro-régions ou seul le glissement se produit. La validation d'un modèle géométrique de densification développé pour les céramiques a été réalisée grâce à de nombreuses données de sites en Antarctique et au Groenland et grâce à la caractérisation de la structure du névé polaire.

Abstract

Abstract: The phase lag between atmospheric composition (air bubbles) and temperature (water isotopes) can be quantified from ice cores provided that the age difference between entrapped air and the surrounding air can be correctly estimated. This difference depends on the lock-in depth (LID), when air no longer mixes with the atmosphere. The LID can be estimated from firnification models or from the air isotopic composition (δ 15N and δ 40Ar). Both methods give consistent results for Greenland and one coastal site in Antarctica (Byrd). New firn measurements in Greenland (NorthGRIP) and Antarctica (Berkner Island, BAS depot, Dome C) confirm that firnification models correctly reproduce the present LID over a large range of surface conditions. However, a systematic mismatch is observed for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in East Antarctic sites (Vostok, Dome C, Dome F) questioning the model''s validity. Here we use new δ 15N measurements from two coastal Antarctic sites (Kohnen Station and Law Dome) providing depth estimates again distinct from firnification model calculations. We show that this discrepancy can be resolved by revising the estimate of past accumulation rates. δ 15N measurements can therefore help to constrain past accumulation rate and improve ice core dating. Abstract

A high-resolution deuterium profile is now available along the entire European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica Dome C ice core, extending this climate record back to marine isotope stage 20.2, ������800,000 years ago. Experiments performed with an atmospheric general circulation model including water isotopes support its temperature interpretation. We assessed the general correspondence between Dansgaard-Oeschger events and their smoothed Antarctic counterparts for this Dome C record, which reveals the presence of such features with similar amplitudes during previous glacial periods. We suggest that the interplay between obliquity and precession accounts for the variable intensity of interglacial periods in ice core records.
