Abstract

Research funding systems are not isolated systems - they are embedded in a larger scientific system with an enormous influence on the system. This paper aims to analyze the allocation of competitive research funding from different perspectives: How reliable are decision processes for funding? What are the economic costs of competitive funding? How does competition for funds affect doing risky research? How do competitive funding environments affect scientists themselves, and which ethical issues must be considered? We attempt to identify gaps in our knowledge of research funding systems; we propose recommendations for policymakers and funding agencies, including empirical experiments of decision processes and the collection of data on these processes. Abstract

Among mammals, the order Primates is exceptional in having a high taxonomic richness in which the taxa are arboreal, semiterrestrial, or terrestrial. Although habitual terrestriality is pervasive among the apes and African and Asian monkeys (catarrhines), it is largely absent among monkeys of the Americas (platyrrhines), as well as galagos, lemurs, and lorises (strepsirrhines), which are mostly arboreal. Numerous ecological drivers and species-specific factors are suggested to set the conditions for an evolutionary shift from arboreality to terrestriality, and current environmental conditions may provide analogous scenarios to those transitional periods. Therefore, we investigated predominantly arboreal, diurnal primate genera from the Americas and Madagascar that lack fully terrestrial taxa, to determine whether ecological drivers (habitat canopy cover, predation risk, maximum temperature, precipitation, primate species richness, human population density, and distance to roads) or species-specific traits (body mass, group size, and degree of frugivory) associate with increased terrestriality. We collated 150,961 observation hours across 2,227 months from 47 species at 20 sites in Madagascar and 48 sites in the Americas. Multiple factors were associated with ground use in these otherwise arboreal species, including increased temperature, a decrease in canopy cover, a dietary shift away from frugivory, and larger group size. These factors mostly explain intraspecific differences in terrestriality. As humanity modifies habitats and causes climate change, our results suggest that species already inhabiting hot, sparsely canopied sites, and exhibiting more generalized diets, are more likely to shift toward greater ground use.

Abstract

The rising rate of preprints and publications, combined with persistent inadequate reporting practices and problems with study design and execution, have strained the traditional peer review system. Automated screening tools could potentially enhance peer review by helping authors, journal editors, and reviewers to identify beneficial practices and common problems in preprints or submitted manuscripts. Tools can screen many papers quickly, and may be particularly helpful in assessing compliance with journal policies and with straightforward items in reporting guidelines. However, existing tools cannot understand or interpret the paper in the context of the scientific literature. Tools cannot yet determine whether the methods used are suitable to answer the research question, or whether the data support the authors conclusions. Editors and peer reviewers are essential for assessing journal fit and the overall quality of a paper, including the experimental design, the soundness of the studys conclusions, potential impact and innovation. Automated screening tools cannot replace peer review, but may aid authors, reviewers, and editors in improving scientific papers. Strategies for responsible use of automated tools in peer review may include setting performance criteria for tools, transparently reporting tool performance and use, and training users to interpret reports.

24. Performance of variable and function selection methods for estimating the non-linear health effects of correlated chemical mixtures: a simulation study

Abstract

Statistical methods for identifying harmful chemicals in a correlated mixture often assume linearity in exposure-response relationships. Non-monotonic relationships are increasingly recognised (e.g., for endocrine-disrupting chemicals); however, the impact of non-monotonicity on exposure selection has not been evaluated. In a simulation study, we assessed the performance of Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), Bayesian additive regression trees (BART), Bayesian structured additive regression with spike-slab priors (BSTARSS), and lasso penalised regression. We used data on exposure to 12 phthalates and phenols in pregnant women from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to simulate realistic exposure data using a multivariate copula. We simulated datasets of size N = 250 and compared methods across 32 scenarios, varying by model size and sparsity, signal-to-noise ratio, correlation structure, and exposure-response relationship shapes. We compared methods in terms of their sensitivity, specificity, and estimation accuracy. In most scenarios, BKMR and BSTARSS achieved moderate to high specificity (0.56--0.91 and 0.57--0.96, respectively) and sensitivity (0.49--0.98 and 0.25--0.97, respectively). BART achieved high specificity ($\geq$ 0.96), but low to moderate sensitivity (0.13--0.66). Lasso was highly sensitive (0.75--0.99), except for symmetric inverse-U-shaped relationships ($\leq$ 0.2). Performance was affected by the signal-to-noise ratio, but not substantially by the correlation structure. Penalised regression methods that assume linearity, such as lasso, may not be suitable for studies of environmental chemicals hypothesised to have non-monotonic relationships with outcomes. Instead, BKMR and BSTARSS are attractive methods for flexibly estimating the shapes of exposure-response relationships and selecting among correlated exposures.

Abstract

The return on investment of funding science has rarely been accurately measured. Previous estimates of the benefits of funding have used observational studies, including regression discontinuity designs. In 2013, the Health Research Council of New Zealand began awarding funding using a modified lottery, with an initial peer review stage followed by funding at random for short-listed applicants. This allowed us to compare research outputs between those awarded funding or not using a randomized experimental study design. The analysis included eighty-eight researchers who were followed for an average of 3.8 years of follow-up. The rate ratios (and 95 per cent credible intervals (CI)) for funding were 0.95 (95 per cent CI 0.67 to 1.39) for publications and 1.06 (95 per cent CI 0.79 to 1.43) for citations, showing no clear impact of funding on research outputs. The wider use of funding lotteries could provide robust estimates of the benefits of research funding to better inform science policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Both biotic and abiotic factors are important for maintaining the activity cycles of animals and may determine the most advantageous periods for eating, moving, and sleeping. Although the solar day--night cycle is among the most central of abiotic variables, a number of species are active both day and night. Three-toed sloth (genus Bradypus Linnaeus, 1758) populations across the Neotropics show this pattern, with activity occurring at various times within the 24 h cycle. In the current study, we used radio-tracking techniques to investigate the daily temporal patterning of brown-throated three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus Schinz, 1825) displacement in Amazonian flooded igapo forest and compared the results with populations studied in other habitats. We concluded that igapo sloths are cathemeral, and discussed that environmental temperature, nutritional needs and the presence of predators may be the main factors influencing their activity pattern. Si le cycle solaire du jour et de la nuit est une des variables abiotiques les plus importantes, certaines especes sont actives aussi bien le jour que la nuit. Les populations de paresseux a trois doigts (genre Bradypus Linnaeus, 1758) partout dans les Neotropiques en sont un exemple, leurs periodes d'activite etant reparties a differents moments du cycle de 24 h. Nous avons utilise des methodes de radioreperage pour etudier les habitudes de deplacement quotidiennes de paresseux a gorge brune (Bradypus variegatus Schinz, 1825) dans la foret inondable igapó de l'Amazone et compare les resultats a ceux de populations etudiees dans d'autres habitats. Nous concluons que les paresseux de l'igapó sont cathemeraux et que la temperature ambiante, les besoins nutritionnels et la presence de predateurs pourraient etre les principaux facteurs influant sur leurs habitudes d'activite. Abstract

Ranging behaviors performed by animals are influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors. For herbivorous mammals, seasonality in forage production is considered to be the main driver of movement patterns. Here, we investigated the home range and movement of one of the most abundant herbivores in the Americas and their relationship with plant phenology in an Amazon igapo--a seasonally flooded riverine forest with strongly pulsed leaf production phenology. Using a combination of telemetry and phenological analysis, the study recorded movement patterns of five brown-throated three-toed sloths (Bradypus variegatus Schinz, 1825) over a 6-month period and related these to seasonal and within-forest differences in food availability through monitoring young leaf production of 570 trees. All monitored animals were shown to be permanently resident within the igapo flooded forest, maintaining their home range even during flood periods when most trees lacked leaves. We found that seasonal variation in leaf production had no effect on the extent of displacement of the sloths. Accordingly, for herbivores with low metabolism, variation in young leaf availability may not be the main driver of their ranging behavior. In addition, an arboreal habit and well-developed swimming capacity allow igapo sloths to occupy a niche ecologically inaccessible to other mammals. Les comportements de deplacement adoptes par les animaux sont influences par des facteurs tant biotiques qu'abiotiques. Pour les mammiferes herbivores, la saisonnalite de la production de fourrage est consideree comme le principal facteur modulant les motifs de deplacement. Nous avons examine le domaine vital et les deplacements d'un des herbivores les plus abondants des Ameriques et leur relation avec la phenologie des plantes dans un igapó amazonien--une foret fluviale inondee sur une base saisonniere presentant une phenologie de production de feuilles fortement episodique. En combinant la telemetrie et l'analyse phenologique, nous avons enregistre les habitudes de deplacement de cinq paresseux a gorge brune (Bradypus variegatus Schinz, 1825) sur une periode de 6 mois et les avons reliees aux variations saisonnieres et au sein de la foret de la disponibilite de nourriture en monitorant la production de jeunes feuilles de 570 arbres. Tous les animaux suivis resident en permanence dans la foret inondable igapó, conservant le meme domaine vital meme en periodes d'inondation quand la plupart des arbres n'ont pas de feuilles. Nous avons constate que les variations saisonnieres de production de feuilles n'ont pas d'effet sur l'ampleur des deplacements des paresseux. Par consequent, les variations de la disponibilite de jeunes feuilles pourraient ne pas etre le principal facteur modulant le comportement de deplacement d'herbivores a metabolisme lent. Un mode de vie arboricole et une capacite de nage bien developpee permettent aux paresseux de l'igapó d'occuper une niche ecologique inaccessible a d'autres mammiferes.
