Women researchers involved in the survey of sexual behavior in humans faced the threat of sexual abuse by male subjects who took advantage of the situation, using the provocative questions as an excuse to impose their sexuality on the women researchers. The analysis of the experiences of four women researchers in Glasgow who faced sexual harassment during their survey of HIV-associated risk factors related to sexual behaviors was aimed at identifying the factors contributing to such incidents.

Discussion focuses on how narrative accounts of children and parents regarding parental drug use are interpreted, and how these interpretations influence sociological research on childcare issues.

The use of electronic cigarettes has increased markedly in recent years, however, as the popularity of e-cigarettes has increased, so has the controversy associated with their use. In this paper we report the views of a small sample of e-cigarette users focussing on the circumstances in which individuals began vaping, their reasons for continuing vaping, their perceptions of the relative harm of vaping compared to smoking, and their views as to whether their use of e-cigarettes had increased their likelihood of smoking. In total we interviewed 50 vapers aged between 16 and 26. Typically, vapers explained their continued use of e-cigarettes in terms of the reduced harm compared to smoking, the lack of an offensive smell, the appeal of different flavours, the greater range of settings in which e-cigarettes could be used, and the reduced stigma associated with their use. The sample of interviewees were evenly split with regard to the perceived justification (or not) for banning vaping in public. Finally, we make the case that it is important to base policy and regulation of e-cigarettes on both robust epidemiological data on the impact of these devices as well as more qualitative, ethnographic, information from users themselves. Introduction: Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) are rapidly proliferating in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. We lack detailed information on rationales for their use.Methods: Qualitative data from 431 NPS users were collected as part of a 2014 online survey on NPS (n = 468 NPS users, 704 non-NPS users). These 431 users answered some or all of five open-ended questions on favourite NPS and NPS they would not use and rationales for these assessments.Findings: Respondents were asked to identify and describe favourite NPS. The favourite NPS identified (n = 258 respondents) mostly had brand names (148). Favourite NPS was associated with a good buzz/feeling, euphoria, enhancing sociability and relaxation. Ease of availability, cheapness and legality of NPS were cited. Achieving a predictable, safe high was important. Adverse NPS experience, including dependency issues both personally or amongst friends was reported by a majority of the 148 who described NPS that they would definitely not take and why, most of these reported having now ceased NPS use. Negative experiences ran from the mildly unpleasant to the persistent, serious and life threatening.Conclusions: Developing new methods of reaching and working with NPS users need timely knowledge of global and local trends in NPS use and effects.
