Abstract

A patient with varicoid carcinoma of the esophagus is reported. These tumors differ from classical esophageal carcinoma and have some resemblance to esophageal varices in their radiological and endoscopic appearances. Dysphagia is generally not the presenting symptom. The histological picture in our patient was that of a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with areas of signet-cell carcinoma. This is an exceptional finding since all previously reported cases of varicoid carcinoma of the esophagus have been squamous cell carcinomas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Congenital anterior urethral diverticulum (CAUD) was diagnosed in 7 male subjects, of whom 3 cases were neonates, 3 cases were school aged and 1 case was adolescent. Varying degrees of urinary obstruction, often associated with urinary tract infection, were the main presenting symptoms. Urinary ascites, a rare manifestation of CAUD, was presented in a neonate associated with severe upper urinary tract changes. In 6 cases the diverticulum was of the wide-mouthed saccular type, and in 1 case of the narrow neck globular type. The clinical presentations, methods of diagnosis and the treatment modalities are discussed.

Abstract

The population genetic profiles of 60 specimens of thecommon intertidal sea anemone Actinia equina taken from foursampling sites (Peroj, Barbariga and the north and south shoresof the Limski Canal), along a 25 km strip of the coastof the Istra Peninsula, Croatia, were evaluated by AFLP markers(144 loci). All populations were characterized by aggregates ofspecimens confined within a few square meters. One of the populations(on the north shore of the canal) contained both large and small-sizedindividuals. Results revealed high within-aggregate genetic heterogeneity(36.1-55.6%). With respect to interpopulationprofiles, geographically remote populations from Peroj, Barbarigaand the south shore of the canal were more closely related geneticallythan those on the north and south shores of the canal. Abstract

A neonate with congenital disseminated neurofibromatosis involving skin, subcutaneous tissues retropharyngeal, retroperitoneal and urinary bladder is presented. The massive presentation precluded radical surgical approach. This seems to be the first report of congenital widely disseminated neonatal neurofibromatosis in the English literature.

46. Wandering spleen in two children—the role of ultrasonic diagnosis

Abstract

Wandering or ectopic spleen is an uncommon condition indicating unusual location of this organ within the abdomen. It is mostly seen in young multiparous females, often presenting during pregnancy (Miller, 1975). The incidence in children is rather low (Broker et al, 1978). The patients may be asymptomatic, may suffer from vague and recurrent abdominal pain or may present with an acute abdomen due to acute torsion. Recently, we encountered two children with an ectopic spleen. Ultrasound examination, plain X ray of the abdomen and radioisotope scanning enabled the correct preoperative diagnosis. The role of ultrasonography and its potential to avoid unnecessary radiation is stressed.

Abstract

An antenatal detection of unilateral torsion of uterine adnexa was made by means of ultrasonography on the 32nd gestational week. This presented as an asymptomatic large "pseudo-cystic" mass, and was resected electively at the age of two weeks. A "fluid-fluid" level on ultrasonography is highly suggestive of this rare entity. This is the fourth case in the English literature to have been detected antenatally, and among the first dozen to be reported in the neonatal period.
