PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Recent work suggests that inwardly propagating internal gravity waves (IGWs) within a star can be fully converted to outward magnetic waves (MWs) if they encounter a sufficiently strong magnetic field. The resulting magnetic waves dissipate as they propagate outward to regions with lower Alfv\'{e}n velocity. While tidal forcing is known to excite IGWs, this conversion and subsequent damping of magnetic waves has not been explored as a tidal dissipation mechanism. In particular, stars with sufficiently strong magnetic fields could fully dissipate tidally excited waves, yielding the same tidal evolution as the previously-studied ``travelling wave regime''. Here, we evaluate the viability of this mechanism using stellar models of stars with convective cores (F-type stars in the mass range of $1.2$-$1.6M_\odot$) which were previously thought to be weakly tidally dissipative (due to the absence of nonlinear gravity wave breaking). The criterion for wave conversion to operate is evaluated for each stellar mass using the properties of each star's interior along with estimates of the magnetic field produced by a convective core dynamo under the assumption of equipartition between kinetic (convective) and magnetic energies. Our main result is that this previously unexplored source of efficient tidal dissipation can operate in stars within this mass range for significant fractions of their lifetimes. This tidal dissipation mechanism appears to be consistent with the observed inspiral of WASP-12b, and more generally could play an important role in the orbital evolution of hot Jupiters -- and to lower mass ultra-short period planets -- orbiting F-type stars., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 0 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters on 9th April 2024

The gas giant Kepler-1658b has been inferred to be spiralling into its sub-giant F-type host star Kepler-1658a (KOI-4). The measured rate of change of its orbital period is $\dot{P}_{\rm orb}=-131^{+20}_{-22}\mathrm{ms/yr}$, which can be explained by tidal dissipation in the star if its modified tidal quality factor is as low as $Q^{\,\prime}\approx 2.50\times {10}^{4}$. We explore whether this could plausibly be consistent with theoretical predictions based on applying up-to-date tidal theory in stellar models (varying stellar mass, age, and metallicity) consistent with our newly-derived observational constraints. In most of our models matching the combined constraints on the stellar effective temperature and radius, the dissipation in the star is far too weak, capable of providing $Q^{\,\prime}\gtrsim 10^9$, hence contributing negligibly to orbital evolution. Using only constraints on the stellar radius, efficient tidal dissipation sufficient to explain observations is possible due to inertial waves in the convective envelope during the sub-giant phase, providing $Q^{\,\prime}\sim 10^4$, but this period in the evolution is very short-lived (shorter than $10^2$ yrs in our models). We show that dissipation in the planet is capable of explaining the observed $\dot{P}_\mathrm{orb}$ only if the planet rotates non-synchronously. Tidally-induced pericentre precession is a viable explanation if the periastron argument is near $3\pi/2$ and the quadrupolar Love number is above 0.26. We study how stably stratified or semi-convective layers alter tidal dissipation rates associated with the generation of inertial, gravito-inertial, interfacial and surface gravity waves in rotating giant planets. We explore scenarios in which stable (non-convective) layers contribute to the high rates of tidal dissipation observed for Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system. Our model is an idealised spherical Boussinesq system incorporating Coriolis forces to study effects of stable stratification and semi-convective layers on tidal dissipation. Our detailed numerical calculations consider realistic tidal forcing and compute the resulting viscous and thermal dissipation rates. The presence of an extended stably stratified fluid core significantly enhances tidal wave excitation of both inertial waves (due to rotation) in the convective envelope and gravito-inertial waves in the dilute core. We show that a sufficiently strongly stratified fluid core enhances inertial wave dissipation in a convective envelope much like a solid core does. We demonstrate that efficient tidal dissipation rates (and associated tidal quality factors $Q'$) -- sufficient to explain the observed migration rates of Saturn's moons -- are predicted at the frequencies of the orbiting moons due to the excitation of inertial or gravito-inertial waves in our models with stable layers (without requiring resonance-locking). Stable layers could also be important for tidal evolution of hot and warm Jupiters, and hot Neptunes, providing efficient tidal circularisation rates. Most prior works studying tidal interactions in tight star/planet or star/star binary systems have employed linear theory of a viscous fluid in a uniformly-rotating two-dimensional spherical shell. However, compact systems may have sufficiently large tidal amplitudes for nonlinear effects to be important. We compute tidal flows subject to nonlinear effects in a 3D, thin (solar-like) convective shell, spanning the entire frequency range of inertial waves. Tidal frequency-averaged dissipation predictions of linear theory with solid body rotation are approximately reproduced in our nonlinear simulations (though we find it to be reduced by a factor of a few), but we find significant differences, potentially by orders of magnitude, at a fixed tidal frequency corresponding to a specific two-body system at a given epoch. We simulate the nonlinear hydrodynamical evolution of tidally-excited inertial waves in convective envelopes of rotating stars and giant planets modelled as spherical shells containing incompressible, viscous and adiabatically-stratified fluid. This model is relevant for studying tidal interactions between close-in planets and their stars, as well as close low-mass star binaries. We explore in detail the frequency-dependent tidal dissipation rates obtained from an extensive suite of numerical simulations, which we compare with linear theory, including with the widely-employed frequency-averaged formalism to represent inertial wave dissipation. We demonstrate that the frequency-averaged predictions appear to be quite robust and is approximately reproduced in our nonlinear simulations spanning the frequency range of inertial waves as we vary the convective envelope thickness, tidal amplitude, and Ekman number. Yet, we find nonlinear simulations can produce significant differences with linear theory for a given tidal frequency (potentially by orders of magnitude), largely due to tidal generation of differential rotation and its effects on the waves. Since the dissipation in a given system can be very different both in linear and nonlinear simulations, the frequency-averaged formalism should be used with caution. Tidal dissipation in star-planet systems can occur through various mechanisms, among which is the elliptical instability. This acts on elliptically deformed equilibrium tidal flows in rotating fluid planets and stars, and excites inertial waves in convective regions if the dimensionless tidal amplitude ($\epsilon$) is sufficiently large. We study its interaction with turbulent convection, and attempt to constrain the contributions of both elliptical instability and convection to tidal dissipation. For this, we perform an extensive suite of Cartesian hydrodynamical simulations of rotating Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection in a small patch of a planet. We find that tidal dissipation resulting from the elliptical instability, when it operates, is consistent with $\epsilon^3$, as in prior simulations without convection. Convective motions also act as an effective viscosity on large-scale tidal flows, resulting in continuous tidal dissipation (scaling as $\epsilon^2$). We derive scaling laws for the effective viscosity using (rotating) mixing-length theory, and find that they predict the turbulent quantities found in our simulations very well. In addition, we examine the reduction of the effective viscosity for fast tides, which we observe to scale with tidal frequency ($\omega$) as $\omega^{-2}$. We evaluate our scaling laws using interior models of Hot Jupiters computed with MESA. We conclude that rotation reduces convective length scales, velocities and effective viscosities (though not in the fast tides regime). We estimate that elliptical instability is efficient for the shortest-period Hot Jupiters, and that effective viscosity of turbulent convection is negligible in giant planets compared with inertial waves., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the linear and nonlinear properties of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability in stellar radiative zones with arbitrary local (radial and latitudinal) differential rotation. This instability may lead to turbulence that contributes to redistribution of angular momentum and chemical composition in stars. In our local Boussinesq model, we investigate varying the orientation of the shear with respect to the 'effective gravity', which we describe using the angle $\phi$. We first perform an axisymmetric linear analysis to explore the effects of varying $\phi$ on the local stability of arbitrary differential rotations. We then explore the nonlinear hydrodynamical evolution in three dimensions using a modified shearing box. The model exhibits both the diffusive GSF instability, and a non-diffusive instability that occurs when the Solberg-H\{o}iland criteria are violated. We observe the nonlinear development of strong zonal jets ("layering" in the angular momentum) with a preferred orientation in both cases, which can considerably enhance turbulent transport. By varying $\phi$ we find the instability with mixed radial and latitudinal shears transports angular momentum more efficiently (particularly if adiabatically unstable) than cases with purely radial shear $(\phi = 0)$. By exploring the dependence on box size, we find the transport properties of the GSF instability to be largely insensitive to this, implying we can meaningfully extrapolate our results to stars. However, there is no preferred length-scale for adiabatic instability, which therefore exhibits strong box-size dependence. We study how stably stratified or semi-convective layers alter the tidal dissipation rates associated with the generation of internal waves in planetary interiors. We consider if these layers could contribute to the high rates of tidal dissipation observed for Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system. We use an idealised global spherical Boussinesq model to study the influence of stable stratification and semi-convective layers on tidal dissipation rates. We carry out analytical and numerical calculations considering realistic tidal forcing and measure how the viscous and thermal dissipation rates depend on the parameters relating to the internal stratification profile. We find that the strongly frequency-dependent tidal dissipation rate is highly dependent on the parameters relating to the stable stratification, with strong resonant peaks that align with the internal modes of the system. The locations and sizes of these resonances depend on the form and parameters of the stratification, which we explore both analytically and numerically. Our results suggest that stable stratification can significantly enhance the tidal dissipation in particular frequency ranges. Analytical calculations in the low frequency regime give us scaling laws for the key parameters, including the tidal quality factor $Q'$ due to internal gravity waves. Stably stratified layers can significantly contribute to tidal dissipation in solar and extrasolar giant planets, and we estimate substantial tidal evolution for hot Neptunes. We simulate the propagation and dissipation of tidally induced nonlinear gravity waves in the cores of solar-type stars. We perform hydrodynamical simulations of a previously developed Boussinesq model using a spectral-element code to study the stellar core as a wave cavity that is periodically forced at the outer boundary with a given azimuthal wavenumber and an adjustable frequency. For low-amplitude forcing, the system exhibits resonances with standing g-modes at particular frequencies, corresponding to a situation in which the tidal torque is highly frequency-dependent. For high-amplitude forcing, the excited waves break promptly near the centre and spin up the core so that subsequent waves are absorbed in an expanding critical layer, as found in previous work, leading to a tidal torque with a smooth frequency-dependence. For intermediate-amplitude forcing, we find that linear damping of the waves gradually spins up the core such that the resonance condition can be altered drastically. The system can evolve towards or away from g-mode resonances, depending on the difference between the forcing frequency and the closest eigenfrequency. Eventually, a critical layer forms and absorbs the incoming waves, leading to a situation similar to the high-amplitude case in which the waves break promptly. We study the dependence of this process on the forcing amplitude and frequency, as well as on the diffusion coefficients. We emphasize that the small Prandtl number in the centre of solar-like stars facilitates the development of a differentially rotating core owing to the nonlinear feedback of waves. Tidal dissipation is responsible for circularizing the orbits and synchronizing the spins of solar-type close binary stars, but the mechanisms responsible are not fully understood. Previous work has indicated that significant enhancements to the theoretically-predicted tidal dissipation rates are required to explain the observed circularization periods ($P_\mathrm{circ}$) in various stellar populations, and their evolution with age. This was based partly on the common belief that the dominant mechanism of tidal dissipation in solar-type stars is turbulent viscosity acting on equilibrium tides in convective envelopes. In this paper we study tidal dissipation in both convection and radiation zones of rotating solar-type stars following their evolution. We study equilibrium tide dissipation, incorporating a frequency-dependent effective viscosity motivated by the latest hydrodynamical simulations, and inertial wave (dynamical tide) dissipation, adopting a frequency-averaged formalism that accounts for the realistic structure of the star. We demonstrate that the observed binary circularization periods can be explained by inertial wave (dynamical tide) dissipation in convective envelopes. This mechanism is particularly efficient during pre-main sequence phases, but it also operates on the main sequence if the spin is close to synchronism. The predicted $P_\mathrm{circ}$ due to this mechanism increases with main-sequence age in accord with observations. We also demonstrate that both equilibrium tide and internal gravity wave dissipation are unlikely to explain the observed $P_\mathrm{circ}$, even during the pre-main sequence, based on our best current understanding of these mechanisms. The interaction between equilibrium tides and convection in stellar envelopes is often considered important for tidal evolution in close binary and extrasolar planetary systems. Its efficiency for fast tides has however long been controversial, when the tidal frequency exceeds the turnover frequency of convective eddies. Recent numerical simulations indicate that convection can act like an effective viscosity which decays quadratically with tidal frequency for fast tides, resulting in inefficient dissipation in many applications involving pre- and main-sequence stars and giant planets. A new idea was however recently proposed by Terquem (2021), who suggested Reynolds stresses involving correlations between tidal flow components dominate the interaction instead of correlations between convective flow components as usually assumed. They further showed that this can potentially significantly enhance tidal dissipation for fast tides in many applications. Motivated by the importance of this problem for tidal dissipation in stars and planets, we directly compute this new term using analytical arguments and global spherical simulations using Boussinesq and anelastic hydrodynamic models. We demonstrate that the new term proposed by Terquem vanishes identically for equilibrium tides interacting with convection in both Boussinesq and anelastic models; it is therefore unlikely to contribute to tidal dissipation in stars and planets., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We study tidal dissipation in stars with masses in the range $0.1-1.6 M_\odot$ throughout their evolution, including turbulent effective viscosity acting on equilibrium tides and inertial waves in convection zones, and internal gravity waves in radiation zones. We consider a range of stellar evolutionary models and incorporate the frequency-dependent effective viscosity acting on equilibrium tides based on the latest simulations. We compare the tidal flow and dissipation obtained with the conventional equilibrium tide, which is strictly invalid in convection zones, finding that the latter typically over-predicts the dissipation by a factor of 2-3. Dissipation of inertial waves is computed using a frequency-averaged formalism accounting for realistic stellar structure for the first time, and is the dominant mechanism for binary circularization and synchronization on the main sequence. Dissipation of gravity waves in the radiation zone assumes these waves to be fully damped (e.g.~by wave breaking), and is the dominant mechanism for planetary orbital decay. We calculate the critical planetary mass required for wave breaking as a function of stellar mass and age, and show that this mechanism predicts destruction of many hot Jupiters but probably not Earth-mass planets on the main sequence. We apply our results to compute tidal quality factors following stellar evolution, and tidal evolutionary timescales, for the orbital decay of hot Jupiters, and the spin synchronization and circularization of binary stars. We also provide predictions for shifts in transit arrival times due to tidally-driven orbital decay of hot Jupiters that may be detected with NGTS, TESS or PLATO., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS on 6th August 2020

Turbulent convection is thought to act as an effective viscosity in damping equilibrium tidal flows, driving spin and orbital evolution in close convective binary systems. Compared to mixing-length predictions, this viscosity ought to be reduced when the tidal frequency $|\omega_t|$ exceeds the turnover frequency $\omega_{c\nu}$ of the dominant convective eddies, but the efficiency of this reduction has been disputed. We reexamine this long-standing controversy using direct numerical simulations of an idealized global model. We simulate thermal convection in a full sphere, and externally forced by the equilibrium tidal flow, to measure the effective viscosity $\nu_E$ acting on the tidal flow when $|\omega_t|/\omega_{c\nu} \gtrsim 1$. We demonstrate that the frequency reduction of $\nu_E$ is correlated with the frequency spectrum of the (unperturbed) convection. For intermediate frequencies below those in the turbulent cascade ($|\omega_t|/\omega_{c\nu} \sim 1-5$), the frequency spectrum displays an anomalous $1/\omega^\alpha$ power law that is responsible for the frequency-reduction $\nu_E \propto 1/|\omega_t|^{\alpha}$, where $\alpha < 1$ depends on the model parameters. We then get $|\nu_E| \propto 1/|\omega_t|^{\delta}$ with $\delta > 1$ for higher frequencies, and $\delta=2$ is obtained for a Kolmogorov turbulent cascade. A generic $|\nu_E| \propto 1/|\omega_t|^{2}$ suppression is next found for higher frequencies within the dissipation range of the convection (but with negative values). Turbulent convection is thought to act as an effective viscosity ($\nu_E$) in damping tidal flows in stars and giant planets. However, the efficiency of this mechanism has long been debated, particularly in the regime of fast tides, when the tidal frequency ($\omega$) exceeds the turnover frequency of the dominant convective eddies ($\omega_c$). We present the results of hydrodynamical simulations to study the interaction between tidal flows and convection in a small patch of a convection zone. These simulations build upon our prior work by simulating more turbulent convection in larger horizontal boxes, and here we explore a wider range of parameters. We obtain several new results: 1) $\nu_E$ is frequency-dependent, scaling as $\omega^{-0.5}$ when $\omega/\omega_c \lesssim 1$, and appears to attain its maximum constant value only for very small frequencies ($\omega/\omega_c \lesssim 10^{-2}$). This frequency-reduction for low frequency tidal forcing has never been observed previously. 2) The frequency-dependence of $\nu_E$ appears to follow the same scaling as the frequency spectrum of the energy (or Reynolds stress) for low and intermediate frequencies. 3) For high frequencies ($\omega/\omega_c\gtrsim 1-5$), $\nu_E\propto \omega^{-2}$. 4) The energetically-dominant convective modes always appear to contribute the most to $\nu_E$, rather than the resonant eddies in a Kolmogorov cascade. These results have important implications for tidal dissipation in convection zones of stars and planets, and indicate that the classical tidal theory of the equilibrium tide in stars and giant planets should be revisited. We continue our investigation into the nonlinear evolution of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability in differentially rotating radiation zones. This instability may be a key player in transporting angular momentum in stars and giant planets, but its nonlinear evolution remains mostly unexplored. In a previous paper we considered the equatorial instability, whereas here we simulate the instability at a general latitude for the first time. We adopt a local Cartesian Boussinesq model in a modified shearing box for most of our simulations, but we also perform some simulations with stress-free, impenetrable, radial boundaries. We first revisit the linear instability and derive some new results, before studying its nonlinear evolution. The instability is found to behave very differently compared with its behaviour at the equator. In particular, here we observe the development of strong zonal jets ("layering" in the angular momentum), which can considerably enhance angular momentum transport, particularly in axisymmetric simulations. The jets are, in general, tilted with respect to the local gravity by an angle that corresponds initially with that of the linear modes, but which evolves with time and depends on the strength of the flow. The instability transports angular momentum much more efficiently (by several orders of magnitude) than it does at the equator, and we estimate that the GSF instability could contribute to the missing angular momentum transport required in both red giant and subgiant stars. Recent observations of Jupiter and Saturn suggest that heavy elements may be diluted in the gaseous envelope, providing a compositional gradient that could stabilise ordinary convection and produce a stably-stratified layer near the core of these planets. This region could consist of semi-convective layers with a staircase-like density profile, which have multiple convective zones separated by thin stably-stratified interfaces, as a result of double-diffusive convection. These layers could have important effects on wave propagation and tidal dissipation that have not been fully explored. We analyse the effects of these layers on the propagation and transmission of internal waves within giant planets, extending prior work in a local Cartesian model. We adopt a simplified global Boussinesq planetary model in which we explore the internal waves in a non-rotating spherical body. We begin by studying the free modes of a region containing semi-convective layers. We then analyse the transmission of internal waves through such a region. The free modes depend strongly on the staircase properties, and consist of modes with both internal and interfacial gravity wave-like behaviour. We determine the frequency shifts of these waves as a function of the number of steps to explore their potential to probe planetary internal structures. We also find that wave transmission is strongly affected by the presence of a staircase. Very large-wavelength waves are transmitted efficiently, but small-scale waves are only transmitted if they are resonant with one of the free modes. We present numerical simulations, using two complementary setups, of rotating Boussinesq thermal convection in a three-dimensional Cartesian geometry with misaligned gravity and rotation vectors. This model represents a small region at a non-polar latitude in the convection zone of a star or planet. We investigate the effects of rotation on the bulk properties of convection at different latitudes, focusing on determining the relation between the heat flux and temperature gradient. We show that our results may be interpreted using rotating mixing length theory (RMLT). The simplest version of RMLT (due to Stevenson) considers the single mode that transports the most heat. This works reasonably well in explaining our results, but there is a systematic departure from these predictions (up to approximately $30\%$ in the temperature gradient) at mid-latitudes. We develop a more detailed treatment of RMLT that includes the transport afforded by multiple modes, and we show that this accounts for most of the systematic differences. We also show that convectively-generated zonal flows and meridional circulations are produced in our simulations, and that their properties depend strongly on the dimensions of the box. These flows also affect the heat transport, contributing to departures from RMLT at some latitudes. However, we find the theoretical predictions of the multi-mode theory for the mid-layer temperature gradient, the root-mean-square (RMS) vertical velocity, the RMS temperature fluctuation, and the spatial spectrum of the heat transport at different latitudes, are all in reasonably good agreement with our numerical results when zonal flows are small., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Convection is thought to act as a turbulent viscosity in damping tidal flows and in driving spin and orbital evolution in close convective binary systems. This turbulent viscosity should be reduced, compared to mixing-length predictions, when the forcing (tidal) frequency $|{\omega}_t|$ exceeds the turnover frequency ${\omega}_{cv}$ of the dominant convective eddies. However, two contradictory scaling laws have been proposed and this issue remains highly disputed. To revisit this controversy, we conduct the first direct numerical simulations (DNS) of convection interacting with the equilibrium tidal flow in an idealized global model of a low-mass star. We present direct computations of the turbulent effective viscosity, ${\nu}_E$, acting on the equilibrium tidal flow. We unexpectedly report the coexistence of the two disputed scaling laws, which reconciles previous theoretical (and numerical) findings. We recover the universal quadratic scaling ${\nu}_E \propto (|{\omega}_t|/{\omega}_{cv})^{-2}$ in the high-frequency regime $|{\omega}_t|/{\omega}_{cv} \gg 1$. Our results also support the linear scaling ${\nu}_E \propto (|{\omega}_t|/{\omega}_{cv})^{-1}$ in an intermediate regime with $1 \leq |{\omega}_t|/{\omega}_{cv} = \mathcal{O}(10)$. Both regimes may be relevant to explain the observed properties of close binaries, including spin synchronization of solar-type stars and the circularization of low-mass stars. The robustness of these two regimes of tidal dissipation, and the transition between them, should be explored further in more realistic models. Tidal interactions are important in driving spin and orbital evolution in planetary and stellar binary systems, but the fluid dynamical mechanisms responsible remain incompletely understood. One key mechanism is the interaction between tidal flows and convection. Turbulent convection is thought to act as an effective viscosity in damping large-scale tidal flows, but there is a long-standing controversy over the efficiency of this mechanism when the tidal frequency exceeds the turnover frequency of the dominant convective eddies. This high frequency regime is relevant for many applications, such as for tides in stars hosting hot Jupiters. We explore the interaction between tidal flows and convection using hydrodynamical simulations within a local Cartesian model of a small patch of a convection zone of a star or planet. We adopt the Boussinesq approximation and simulate Rayleigh-B\'enard convection, modelling the tidal flow as a background oscillatory shear flow. We demonstrate that the effective viscosity of both laminar and turbulent convection is approximately frequency-independent for low frequencies. When the forcing frequency exceeds the dominant convective frequency, the effective viscosity scales inversely with the square of the tidal frequency. We also show that negative effective viscosities are possible, particularly for high frequency tidal forcing, suggesting the surprising possibility of tidal anti-dissipation. These results are supported by a complementary high frequency asymptotic analysis that extends prior work by Ogilvie & Lesur. We present an investigation into the nonlinear evolution of the Goldreich-Schubert-Fricke (GSF) instability using axisymmetric and three-dimensional simulations near the equator of a differentially rotating radiation zone. This instability may provide an important contribution to angular momentum transport in stars and planets. We adopt a local Boussinesq Cartesian shearing box model, which represents a small patch of a differentially rotating stellar radiation zone. Complementary simulations are also performed with stress-free, impenetrable boundaries in the local radial direction. The linear and nonlinear evolution of the equatorial axisymmetric instability is formally equivalent to the salt fingering instability. This is no longer the case in 3D, but we find that the instability behaves nonlinearly in a similar way to salt fingering. Axisymmetric simulations -- and those in 3D with short dimensions along the local azimuthal direction -- quickly develop strong jets along the rotation axis, which inhibit the instability and lead to predator-prey-like temporal dynamics. In 3D, the instability initially produces homogeneous turbulence and enhanced momentum transport, though in some cases jets form on a much longer timescale. We propose and validate numerically a simple theory for nonlinear saturation of the GSF instability and its resulting angular momentum transport. This theory is straightforward to implement in stellar evolution codes incorporating rotation. Recent Juno observations have suggested that the heavy elements in Jupiter could be diluted throughout a large fraction of its gaseous envelope, providing a stabilising compositional gradient over an extended region of the planet. This could trigger layered semi-convection, which, in the context of giant planets more generally, may explain Saturn's luminosity excess and play a role in causing the abnormally large radii of some hot Jupiters. In giant planet interiors, it could take the form of density staircases, which are convective layers separated by thin stably stratified interfaces. In addition, the efficiency of tidal dissipation is known to depend strongly on the planetary internal structure. We aim to study the resulting tidal dissipation when internal waves are excited in a region of layered semi-convection by tidal gravitational forcing due to other bodies (such as moons in giant planet systems, or stars in hot Jupiter systems). We adopt a local Cartesian model with a background layered density profile subjected to an imposed tidal forcing, and we compute the viscous and thermal dissipation rates numerically. We find that the rates of tidal dissipation can be enhanced in a region of layered semi-convection compared to a uniformly convective medium, where the latter corresponds with the usual assumption adopted in giant planet interior models. In particular, a region of layered semi-convection possesses a richer set of resonances, allowing enhanced dissipation for a wider range of tidal frequencies. The details of these results significantly depend on the structural properties of the layered semi-convective regions. Layered semi-convection could contribute towards explaining the high tidal dissipation rates observed in Jupiter and Saturn, which have not yet been fully explained by theory. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability has been proposed as a mechanism to extract energy from magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in flux tubes, and to drive dissipation of this wave energy through turbulence. It is therefore a potentially important process in heating the solar corona. However, it is unclear how the instability is influenced by the oscillatory shear flow associated with an MHD wave. We investigate the linear stability of a discontinuous oscillatory shear flow in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field within a Cartesian framework that captures the essential features of MHD oscillations in flux tubes. We derive a Mathieu equation for the Lagrangian displacement of the interface and analyse its properties, identifying two different instabilities: a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and a parametric instability involving resonance between the oscillatory shear flow and two surface Alfv\'{e}n waves. The latter occurs when the system is Kelvin-Helmholtz stable, thus favouring modes that vary along the flux tube, and as a consequence provides an important and additional mechanism to extract energy. When applied to flows with the characteristic properties of kink waves in the solar corona, both instabilities can grow, with the parametric instability capable of generating smaller scale disturbances along the magnetic field than possible via the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The characteristic time-scale for these instabilities is $\sim 100$ s, for wavelengths of $200$ km. The combination of elliptical deformation of streamlines and vorticity can lead to the destabilisation of any rotating flow via the elliptical instability. Such a mechanism has been invoked as a possible source of turbulence in planetary cores subject to tidal deformations. The saturation of the elliptical instability has been shown to generate turbulence composed of non-linearly interacting waves and strong columnar vortices with varying respective amplitudes, depending on the control parameters and geometry. In this paper, we present a suite of numerical simulations to investigate the saturation and the transition from vortex-dominated to wave-dominated regimes. This is achieved by simulating the growth and saturation of the elliptical instability in an idealised triply periodic domain, adding a frictional damping to the geostrophic component only, to mimic its interaction with boundaries. We reproduce several experimental observations within one idealised local model and complement them by reaching more extreme flow parameters. In particular, a wave-dominated regime that exhibits many signatures of inertial wave turbulence is characterised for the first time. Layered semi-convection is a possible candidate to explain Saturn's luminosity excess and the abnormally large radius of some hot Jupiters. In giant planet interiors, it could lead to the creation of density staircases, which are convective layers separated by thin stably stratified interfaces. We study the propagation of internal waves in a region of layered semi-convection, with the aim to predict energy transport by internal waves incident upon a density staircase. The goal is then to understand the resulting tidal dissipation when these waves are excited by other bodies such as moons in giant planets systems. We use a local Cartesian analytical model, taking into account the complete Coriolis acceleration at any latitude, thus generalizing previous works. We find transmission of incident internal waves to be strongly affected by the presence of a density staircase, even if these waves are initially pure inertial waves (which are restored by the Coriolis acceleration). In particular, low-frequency waves of all wavelengths are perfectly transmitted near the critical latitude. Otherwise, short-wavelength waves are only efficiently transmitted if they are resonant with a free mode (interfacial gravity wave or short-wavelength inertial mode) of the staircase. In all other cases, waves are primarily reflected unless their wavelengths are longer than the vertical extent of the entire staircase (not just a single step). We expect incident internal waves to be strongly affected by the presence of a density staircase in a frequency-, latitude- and wavelength-dependent manner. I discuss two related nonlinear mechanisms of tidal dissipation that require finite tidal deformations for their operation: the elliptical instability and the precessional instability. Both are likely to be important for the tidal evolution of short-period extrasolar planets. The elliptical instability is a fluid instability of elliptical streamlines, such as in tidally deformed non-synchronously rotating or non-circularly orbiting planets. I summarise the results of local and global simulations that indicate this mechanism to be important for tidal spin synchronisation, planetary spin-orbit alignment and orbital circularisation for the shortest period hot Jupiters. The precessional instability is a fluid instability that occurs in planets undergoing axial precession, such as those with spin-orbit misalignments (non-zero obliquities). I summarise the outcome of local MHD simulations designed to study the turbulent damping of axial precession, which suggest this mechanism to be important in driving tidal evolution of the spin-orbit angle for hot Jupiters. The WASP-18 system, with its massive and extremely close-in planet, WASP-18b (M$_{p}$ = 10.3M$_{J}$, a = 0.02 AU, P = 22.6 hours), is one of the best known exoplanet laboratories to directly measure Q', the modified tidal quality factor and proxy for efficiency of tidal dissipation, of the host star. Previous analysis predicted a rapid orbital decay of the planet toward its host star that should be measurable on the time scale of a few years, if the star is as dissipative as is inferred from the circularization of close-in solar-type binary stars. We have compiled published transit and secondary eclipse timing (as observed by WASP, TRAPPIST, and Spitzer) with more recent unpublished light curves (as observed by TRAPPIST and HST) with coverage spanning nine years. We find no signature of a rapid decay. We conclude that the absence of rapid orbital decay most likely derives from Q' being larger than was inferred from solar-type stars, and find that Q' $\geq $1$\times10^{6}$, at 95\,\% confidence; this supports previous work suggesting that F-stars, with their convective cores and thin convective envelopes, are significantly less tidally dissipative than solar-type stars, with radiative cores and large convective envelopes., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

The spin axis of a rotationally deformed planet is forced to precess about its orbital angular momentum vector, due to the tidal gravity of its host star, if these directions are misaligned. This induces internal fluid motions inside the planet that are subject to a hydrodynamic instability. We study the turbulent damping of precessional fluid motions, as a result of this instability, in the simplest local computational model of a giant planet (or star), with and without a weak internal magnetic field. Our aim is to determine the outcome of this instability, and its importance in driving tidal evolution of the spin-orbit angle in precessing planets (and stars). We find that this instability produces turbulent dissipation that is sufficiently strong that it could drive significant tidal evolution of the spin-orbit angle for hot Jupiters with orbital periods shorter than about 10-18 days. If this mechanism acts in isolation, this evolution would be towards alignment or anti-alignment, depending on the initial angle, but the ultimate evolution (if other tidal mechanisms also contribute) is expected to be towards alignment. The turbulent dissipation is proportional to the cube of the precession frequency, so it leads to much slower damping of stellar spin-orbit angles, implying that this instability is unlikely to drive evolution of the spin-orbit angle in stars (either in planetary or close binary systems). I present results from the first global hydrodynamical simulations of the elliptical instability in a tidally deformed gaseous planet (or star) with a free surface. The elliptical instability is potentially important for tidal evolution of the shortest-period hot Jupiters. I model the planet as a spin-orbit aligned or anti-aligned, and non-synchronously rotating, tidally deformed, homogeneous fluid body. A companion paper presented an analysis of the global modes and instabilities of such a planet. Here I focus on the nonlinear evolution of the elliptical instability. This is observed to produce bursts of turbulence that drive the planet towards synchronism with its orbit in an erratic manner. If the planetary spin is initially anti-aligned, the elliptical instability also drives spin-orbit alignment on a similar timescale as the spin synchronisation. The instability generates differential rotation inside the planet in the form of zonal flows, which play an important role in the saturation of the instability, and in producing the observed burstiness. These results are broadly consistent with the picture obtained using a local Cartesian model (where columnar vortices played the role of zonal flows). I also simulate the instability in a container that is rigid (but stress-free) rather than free, finding broad quantitative agreement. The dissipation resulting from the elliptical instability could explain why the shortest-period hot Jupiters tend to have circular orbits inside about 2-3 days, and predicts spin-synchronisation (and spin-orbit alignment) out to about 10-15 days. We revisit the global modes and instabilities of homogeneous rotating ellipsoidal fluid masses, which are the simplest global models of rotationally and tidally deformed gaseous planets or stars. The tidal flow in a short-period planet may be unstable to the elliptical instability, a hydrodynamic instability that can drive tidal evolution. We perform a global (and local WKB) analysis to study this instability using the elegant formalism of Lebovitz & Lifschitz. We survey the parameter space of global instabilities with harmonic orders $\ell\leq 5$, for planets with spins that are purely aligned (prograde) or anti-aligned (retrograde) with their orbits. In general, the instability has a much larger growth rate if the planetary spin and orbit are anti-aligned rather than aligned. We have identified a violent instability for anti-aligned spins outside of the usual frequency range for the elliptical instability (when $\frac{n}{\Omega}\lesssim -1$, where $n$ and $\Omega$ are the orbital and spin angular frequencies, respectively) if the tidal amplitude is sufficiently large. We also explore the instability in a rigid ellipsoidal container, which is found to be quantitatively similar to that with a realistic free surface. Finally, we study the effect of rotation and tidal deformation on mode frequencies. We find that larger rotation rates and larger tidal deformations both decrease the frequencies of the prograde sectoral surface gravity modes. This increases the prospect of their tidal excitation, potentially enhancing the tidal response over expectations from linear theory. We perform global two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of Keplerian discs with free eccentricity over thousands of orbital periods. Our aim is to determine the validity of secular theory in describing the evolution of eccentric discs, and to explore their nonlinear evolution for moderate eccentricities. Linear secular theory is found to correctly predict the structure and precession rates of discs with small eccentricities. However, discs with larger eccentricities (and eccentricity gradients) are observed to precess faster (retrograde relative to the orbital motion), at a rate that depends on their eccentricities (and eccentricity gradients). We derive analytically a nonlinear secular theory for eccentric gas discs, which explains this result as a modification of the pressure forces whenever eccentric orbits in a disc nearly intersect. This effect could be particularly important for highly eccentric discs produced in tidal disruption events, or for narrow gaseous rings; it might also play a role in causing some of the variability in superhump binary systems. In two dimensions, the eccentricity of a moderately eccentric disc is long-lived and persists throughout the duration of our simulations. We explore the linear stability of astrophysical discs exhibiting vertical shear, which arises when there is a radial variation in the temperature or entropy. Such discs are subject to a "vertical-shear instability", which recent nonlinear simulations have shown to drive hydrodynamic activity in the MRI-stable regions of protoplanetary discs. We first revisit locally isothermal discs using the quasi-global reduced model derived by Nelson et al. (2013). This analysis is then extended to global axisymmetric perturbations in a cylindrical domain. We also derive and study a reduced model describing discs with power law radial entropy profiles ("locally polytropic discs"), which are somewhat more realistic in that they possess physical (as opposed to numerical) surfaces. In all cases the fastest growing modes have very short wavelengths and are localised at the disc surfaces (if present), where the vertical shear is maximal. An additional class of modestly growing vertically global body modes is excited, corresponding to destabilised classical inertial waves ("r-modes"). We discuss the properties of both types of modes, and stress that those that grow fastest occur on the shortest available length scales (determined either by the numerical grid or the physical viscous length). This ill-posedness makes simulations of the instability difficult to interpret. Eccentric Keplerian discs are believed to be unstable to three-dimensional hydrodynamical instabilities driven by the time-dependence of fluid properties around an orbit. These instabilities could lead to small-scale turbulence, and ultimately modify the global disc properties. We use a local model of an eccentric disc, derived in a companion paper, to compute the nonlinear vertical ("breathing mode") oscillations of the disc. We then analyse their linear stability to locally axisymmetric disturbances for any disc eccentricity and eccentricity gradient using a numerical Floquet method. In the limit of small departures from a circular reference orbit, the instability of an isothermal disc is explained analytically. We also study analytically the small-scale instability of an eccentric neutrally stratified polytropic disc with any polytropic index using a WKB approximation. We find that eccentric discs are generically unstable to the parametric excitation of small-scale inertial waves. The nonlinear evolution of these instabilities should be studied in numerical simulations, where we expect them to lead to a decay of the disc eccentricity and eccentricity gradient as well as to induce additional transport and mixing. Our results highlight that it is essential to consider the three-dimensional structure of eccentric discs, and their resulting vertical oscillatory flows, in order to correctly capture their evolution., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, to be published in MNRAS

We formulate a local dynamical model of an eccentric disc in which the dominant motion consists of elliptical Keplerian orbits. The model is a generalization of the well known shearing sheet, and is suitable for both analytical and computational studies of the local dynamics of eccentric discs. It is spatially homogeneous in the horizontal dimensions but has a time-dependent geometry that oscillates at the orbital frequency. We show how certain averages of the stress tensor in the local model determine the large-scale evolution of the shape and mass distribution of the disc. The simplest solutions of the local model are laminar flows consisting of a (generally nonlinear) vertical oscillation of the disc. Eccentric discs lack vertical hydrostatic equilibrium because of the variation of the vertical gravitational acceleration around the eccentric orbit, and in some cases because of the divergence of the orbital velocity field associated with an eccentricity gradient. We discuss the properties of the laminar solutions, showing that they can exhibit extreme compressional behaviour for eccentricities greater than about $0.5$, especially in discs that behave isothermally. We also derive the linear evolutionary equations for an eccentric disc that follow from the laminar flows in the absence of a shear viscosity. Existing methods for the estimation of stable distribution parameters, such as those based on sample quantiles, sample characteristic functions or maximum likelihood generally assume an independent sample. Little attention has been paid to estimation from a dependent sample. In this paper, a method for the estimation of stable distribution parameters from a dependent sample is proposed based on the sample quantiles. The estimates are shown to be asymptotically normal. The asymptotic variance is calculated for stable moving average processes. Simulations from stable moving average processes are used to demonstrate these estimators., Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure. A formula is derived for the log quantile difference of the temporal aggregation of some types of stable moving average processes, MA(q). The shape of the log quantile difference as a function of the aggregation level is examined and shown to be dependent on the parameters of the moving average process but not the quantile levels. We study thermal convection in a rotating fluid in order to better understand the properties of convection zones in rotating stars and planets. We first derive mixing-length theory for rapidly-rotating convection, arriving at the results of Stevenson (1979) via simple physical arguments. The theory predicts the properties of convection as a function of the imposed heat flux and rotation rate, independent of microscopic diffusivities. In particular, it predicts the mean temperature gradient; the rms velocity and temperature fluctuations; and the size of the eddies that dominate heat transport. We test all of these predictions with high resolution three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of Boussinesq convection in a Cartesian box. The results agree remarkably well with the theory across more than two orders of magnitude in rotation rate. For example, the temperature gradient is predicted to scale as the rotation rate to the 4/5th power at fixed flux, and the simulations yield $0.75\pm 0.06$. We conclude that the mixing length theory is a solid foundation for understanding the properties of convection zones in rotating stars and planets., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, to be published in ApJ

We investigate whether the elliptical instability is important for tidal dissipation in gaseous planets and stars. In a companion paper, we found that the conventional elliptical instability results in insufficient dissipation because it produces long-lived vortices that then quench further instability. Here, we study whether the addition of a magnetic field prevents those vortices from forming, and hence leads to enhanced dissipation. We present results from magnetohydrodynamical simulations that evolve the elliptical instability in a local patch of a rotating planet or star, in the presence of a weak magnetic field. We find that magnetic fields do indeed prevent vortices from forming, and hence greatly enhance the steady state dissipation rate. In addition, the resulting turbulence acts as a small-scale dynamo, amplifying the initially weak field. The inferred tidal dissipation is potentially important at short orbital periods. For example, it can circularise hot Jupiters with orbital periods shorter than 2.5 days, and synchronise their spins with their orbits out to 6 days. However, it appears unable to account for the hot Jupiters that appear to have been circularised out to six to ten day orbital periods. Tidally distorted rotating stars and gaseous planets are subject to a well-known linear fluid instability -- the elliptical instability. It has been proposed that this instability might drive enough energy dissipation to solve the long-standing problem of the origin of tidal dissipation in stars and planets. But the nonlinear outcome of the elliptical instability has yet to be investigated in the parameter regime of interest, and the resulting turbulent energy dissipation has not yet been quantified. We do so by performing three dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a small patch of a tidally deformed fluid planet or star subject to the elliptical instability. We show that when the tidal deformation is weak, the nonlinear outcome of the instability leads to the formation of long-lived columnar vortices aligned with the axis of rotation. These vortices shut off the elliptical instability, and the net result is insufficient energy dissipation to account for tidal dissipation. We perform idealised numerical simulations of magnetic buoyancy instabilities in a model of the solar tachocline. We introduce a simplified model of magnetic flux pumping in an upper layer (the convection zone), and study the effects of its inclusion on the evolution of buoyancy instabilities in a lower layer (the radiative interior). We study its effects on the instability of both a preconceived magnetic slab and of a shear-generated magnetic layer. In the former, we find that in the regime in which the downward pumping velocity is comparable with the Alfven speed of the magnetic layer, flux pumping is able to hold back the bulk of the magnetic field, with only small pockets of strong field able to rise into the upper layer. In simulations in which the magnetic layer is generated by shear, we find that the shear velocity is not necessarily required to exceed that of the pumping (therefore the kinetic energy of the shear is not required to exceed that of the overlying convection), for strong localised pockets of magnetic field to be produced which can rise into the upper layer. This is because magnetic flux pumping acts to store the field below the interface, allowing it to be amplified both by the shear, and by vortical fluid motions, until pockets of field can achieve sufficient strength to rise into the upper layer. In addition, we find that the interface between the two layers is a natural location for the production of strong vertical gradients in the magnetic field. If these gradients are sufficiently strong to allow the development of magnetic buoyancy instabilities, strong shear is not necessarily required to drive them (c.f. previous work by Vasil & Brummell). We perform a stability analysis of a tidally excited nonlinear internal gravity wave near the centre of a solar-type star in two-dimensions. The motivation is to understand the tidal interaction between short-period planets and their solar-type host stars, which involves the launching of gravity waves at the top of the radiation zone that propagate towards the stellar centre. Studying the instabilities of these waves near the centre, where nonlinearities are most important, is essential, since it may have implications for the survival of these planets. When the waves have sufficient amplitude to overturn the stratification, they break and form a critical layer, which efficiently absorbs subsequent ingoing wave angular momentum, and can result in the planet spiralling into the star. However, previous simulations do not find the waves to undergo instability for smaller amplitudes. This work has two aims: to determine any instabilities that set in for small-amplitude waves, and to further understand the breaking of large-amplitude waves. Our main result is that the waves undergo parametric instabilities for any amplitude. However, because the nonlinearity is spatially localised in the innermost wavelengths, their growth rates are sufficiently small that they do not result in astrophysically important tidal dissipation. The resulting modified tidal quality factors are estimated to be Q'_star>10^7, and possibly much greater, so the dissipation is much weaker than that which results from critical-layer absorption. These results support our explanation for the survival of all currently observed short-period planets around solar-type main-sequence stars: that planets unable to cause wave breaking at the centre of their host stars are likely to survive against tidal decay.
