16. Calibration and Cross-Validation of Accelerometry in Children and Adolescents with Cystic Fibrosis

Abstract

Commonly used cut-points may misclassify physical activity (PA) in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of this study was to develop and cross-validate condition-specific cut-points in children and adolescents with CF. Thirty-five children and adolescents with CF (15 girls; 11.6 ± 2.8 years) and 28 controls (16 girls; 12.2 ± 2.7 years), had their energy expenditure and triaxial acceleration measured during six daily activities of varying intensities. Euclidean Norm Minus One (ENMO) and Mean Amplitude Deviation (MAD) were extracted using both GENEActiv (both wrists) and ActiGraph GT9X (both wrists and right waist) accelerometers. ROC curves were used to determine healthy and CF-specific raw acceleration cut-points for sedentary time (SED), moderate physical activity (MPA) and vigorous physical activity (VPA). The PA cut-points were generally lower in CF compared to controls for both ENMO (60.2-73.1 vs. 63.5-86.8 mg) and MAD (58.9-85.2 vs. 75.9-93.7 mg). These substantial inter-cut-point differences support the need for disease-specific cut-points.

29. MYP Coordinators: Differences in Job Satisfaction Levels Based on the Number of IB Programmes

Abstract

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is one of four programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate, together with the Diploma Programme, Career-related Programme and Primary Years Programme. This study investigated the difference in job satisfaction levels of MYP Coordinators based on the number of IB programmes delivered in the school. Schools offering the MYP are required to appoint a member of staff to the role of MYP Coordinator. MYP Coordinators differ by age, gender and experience, and work in diverse school environments. The purpose of this study was to explore the job satisfaction of the critical role of MYP Coordinator. Using Herzberg's Two Factor Theory as the theoretical framework, a modified version of the Job Satisfaction Survey was distributed to all registered Coordinators via email. 344 participants responded to eighteen items addressing the central question: What is the difference in job satisfaction levels of active MYP Coordinators based on demographic factors? The independent variables were age, gender, experience as a coordinator, number of IB programmes in school and eAssessment implementation. Using one-way ANOVA tests and t-tests, no statistical difference in job satisfaction was found for age, gender, experience as a Coordinator or the implementation of eAssessments. There was a difference in job satisfaction levels for MYP Coordinators working in 3-programme (MYP plus Diploma Programme and Primary Years Programme) schools compared with those in MYP-only schools, with the former recording higher job satisfaction levels. This finding demonstrates the need for whole-school alignment in the promotion of an atmosphere that is conducive to effective MYP coordination.

Abstract

Unlike other industries, in higher education an institution's most important asset is its reputation. Yet as fundamental as it is, many leaders continue to view managing reputation as dishonest and counterproductive, a suspect process that undermines the very idea of reputation as an organic outcome of reality. When leadership credibility is on the line, though, and an institution's reputation is facing potentially irreparable damage, the concept of reputational risk moves from being nebulous to all too tangible. In "Preventing Crises at Your University," Simon Barker demonstrates how critical it is for colleges and universities to align strategy and values with decision-making during times of crisis. Arguing that leaders must stop considering the discussion of reputational risk as unseemly, he demonstrates that this discussion is in fact a strategic imperative for every leader. Significant reputational damage, Barker asserts, is not the inevitable outcome of a crisis but of a poor response. Defining a new crisis leadership playbook to deal with self-inflicted crises, he also: (1) explains what typically goes wrong in a crisis; (2) describes how to prevent crises from escalating; (3) demonstrates how a stakeholder-centric model of communications can help mitigate reputational damage; and (4) introduces a number of original concepts, including a Reputational Risk Management Framework, a Reputational Risk Maturity Model, and a Culture and Capability matrix. Moving beyond the theoretical by presenting case studies of real crises involving sexual assault, freedom of speech, student protests, faculty misconduct, and a broad range of financial, social, and ethical issues, the book highlights and underscore key concepts around effective management of reputational risk. Ultimately, "Preventing Crises at Your University" serves as a wake-up call for all higher education leaders and board members.

Abstract

We present a measurement of $B(\pi^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- \gamma)/B(\pi^0 \rightarrow \gamma\gamma)$, the Dalitz branching ratio, using data taken in 1999 by the E832 KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We use neutral pions from fully reconstructed $K_L$ decays in flight; the measurement is based on about 60 thousand $K_L \rightarrow \pi^0\pi^0\pi^0 \rightarrow \gamma\gamma~\gamma\gamma~e^+e^-\gamma$ decays. We normalize to $K_L \rightarrow \pi^0\pi^0\pi^0 \rightarrow 6\gamma$ decays. We find $B(\pi^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- \gamma)/B(\pi^0 \rightarrow \gamma\gamma)$ $(m_{e^+e^-}$ > 15 MeV/$c^2)$ = $[3.920 \pm 0.016(stat) \pm 0.036 (syst)] \times 10^{-3}$. Using the Mikaelian and Smith prediction for the $e^+e^-$ mass spectrum, we correct the result to the full $e^+e^-$ mass range. The corrected result is $B(\pi^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- \gamma)/B(\pi^0 \rightarrow \gamma\gamma) = [1.1559 \pm 0.0047(stat) \pm 0.0106 (syst)]$%. This result is consistent with previous measurements and the uncertainty is a factor of three smaller than any previous measurement., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures; v2 accepted version
