Hollow Mn3O4 nanoparticles (diameter=31 nm, cavity diameter =16 nm, and shell thickness=7 nm) were attached to the surface of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). A suspension of hollow Mn3O4/MWCNT with Nafion™ was dropcast onto a glassy carbon electrode, and the electrochemical reduction of oxygen in aqueous solution was investigated with this electrode. We assess the role of MWCNT, hollow Mn3O4, and Nafion™ in the performance of the electrode, and investigate the kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction. The electrode exhibits outstanding performance in measures of cathodic current density and onset potential, and performed similarly well in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions. We demonstrate a highly sensitive and selective sensing platform for the electrochemical detection of Hg2+ in aqueous media. A graphene oxide (GO) and silver nanowire (AgNW) nanocomposites modified platinum (Pt) electrode has been applied to determine Hg2+ by using square- wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The synergistic effect of graphene oxide and conductive AgNW greatly facilitates faster electron transport and sensing behavior for Hg2+. Under the optimum conditions, the sensor shows a high sensitivity of ~0.29 µA/nM and a linear response in the range 1-70 nM toward Hg2+. The detection limit of the GO-AgNW nanocomposites modified electrode toward Hg2+ is ~0.1 nM, which is significantly less than the safety limit defined by the World Health Organization. The sensor has an excellent selective response to Hg2+ against other interfering heavy metal ions such as Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Na+, and Ag+. In addition, the sensor exhibits a high repeatability and reproducibility. The sensor is employed for the detection of Hg2+ in tap water samples with an outstanding performance, suggesting it is a very promising platform for on-site monitoring of Hg2+ in water. Gold nanostars have unique plasmonic properties that are related to the highly branched nanostructures. However, it is challenging to precisely control these branches. Here we studied the reaction kinetics on the seed-mediated growth process of gold nanostars using in situ UV-vis spectroscopy. The impact of hydroquinone ligands on the formation and evolution of active intermediates was systematically explored. In addition, we improved the classical seed-mediated method to achieve a much better control on the final morphology of gold nanostars by a sudden addition of a high concentration ligand solution. Our method can significantly advance the syntheses of gold nanostars and provide numerous opportunities to prepare nanomaterials with unique morphology and plasmonic properties. Earth–abundant transition metal chalcogenide materials are of great research interest for energy production and environmental remediation, as they exhibit better photocatalytic activity due to their suitable electronic and optical properties. This study focuses on the photocatalytic activity of flower-like SnS2 nanoparticles (composed of nanosheet subunits) embedded in TiO2 synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The materials were characterized using different techniques, and their photocatalytic activity was assessed for hydrogen evolution reaction and the degradation of methylene blue. Among the catalysts studied, 10 wt. % of SnS2 loaded TiO2 nanocomposite shows an optimum hydrogen evolution rate of 195.55 µmolg−1, whereas 15 wt. % loading of SnS2 on TiO2 exhibits better performance against the degradation of methylene blue (MB) with the rate constant of 4.415 × 10−4 s−1 under solar simulated irradiation. The improved performance of these materials can be attributed to the effective photo-induced charge transfer and reduced recombination, which make these nanocomposite materials promising candidates for the development of high-performance next-generation photocatalyst materials. Further, scavenging experiments were carried out to confirm the reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the photocatalytic degradation. It can be observed that there was a 78% reduction in the rate of degradation when IPA was used as the scavenger, whereas around 95% reduction was attained while N2 was used as the scavenger. Notably, very low degradation (<5%) was attained when the dye alone was directly under solar irradiation. These results further validate that the •OH radical and the superoxide radicals can be acknowledged for the degradation mechanism of MB, and the enhancement of degradation efficiency may be due to the combined effect of in situ dye sensitization during the catalysis and the impregnation of low bandgap materials on TiO2. Cobalt(ii) ions were adsorbed to the surface of rod-shape anatase TiO 2 nanocrystals and subsequently heated to promote ion diffusion into the nanocrystal. After removal of any remaining surface bound cobalt, a sample consisting of strictly cobalt-doped TiO 2 was obtained and characterized with powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The nanocrystal morphology was unchanged in the process and no new crystal phases were detected. The concentration of cobalt in the doped samples linearly correlates with the initial loading of cobalt(ii) ions on the nanocrystal surface. Thin films of the cobalt doped TiO 2 nanocrystals were prepared on indium-tin oxide coated glass substrate, and the electrical conductivity increased with the concentration of doped cobalt. Magnetic measurements of the cobalt-doped TiO 2 nanocrystals reveal paramagnetic behavior at room temperature, and antiferromagnetic interactions between Co ions at low temperatures.
