Photomechanical molecular crystals have garnered attention for their ability to transform light into mechanical work, but difficulties in characterizing the structural changes and mechanical responses experimentally have hindered the development of practical organic crystal engines. This study proposes a new computational framework for predicting the solid-state crystal-to-crystal photochemical transformations entirely from first principles, and it establishes a photomechanical engine cycle that quantifies the anisotropic mechanical performance resulting from the transformation. The approach relies on crystal structure prediction, solid-state topochemical principles, and high-quality electronic structure methods. After validating the framework on the well-studied [4 + 4] cycloadditions in 9-methyl anthracene and 9-tert-butyl anthracene ester, the experimentally-unknown solid-state transformation of 9-carboxylic acid anthracene is predicted for the first time. The results illustrate how the mechanical work is done by relaxation of the crystal lattice to accommodate the photoproduct, rather than by the photochemistry itself. The large ∼107 J m-3 work densities computed for all three systems highlight the promise of photomechanical crystal engines. This study demonstrates the importance of crystal packing in determining molecular crystal engine performance and provides tools and insights to design improved materials in silico.

Sulfur oxidation state is used to tune organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of symmetric sulfur-bridged carbazole dimers. The sulfide-bridged compound exhibits a factor of 3 enhancement of the phosphorescence efficiency, compared to the sulfoxide and sulfone-bridged analogs, despite sulfone bridges being commonly used in RTP materials. In order to investigate the origin of this enhancement, temperature dependent spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations are used. The RTP lifetimes are similar due to similar crystal packing modes. Computational studies reveal that the lone pairs on the sulfur atom have a profound impact on enhancing intersystem crossing rate through orbital mixing and screening, which we hypothesize is the dominant factor responsible for increasing the phosphorescence efficiency. The ability to tune the electronic state without altering crystal packing modes allows the isolation of these effects. This work provides a new perspective on the design principles of organic phosphorescent materials, going beyond the rules established for conjugated ketone/sulfone-based organic molecules.

Crystals composed of photoreactive molecules represent a new class of photomechanical materials with the potential to generate large forces on fast timescales. An example is the photodimerization of 9-tert-butyl-anthracene ester (9TBAE) in molecular crystal nanorods that leads to an average elongation of 8%. Previous work showed that this expansion results from the formation of a metastable crystalline product. In this article, it is shown how a novel combination of ensemble oriented-crystal solid-state NMR, X-ray diffraction, and first principles computational modeling can be used to establish the absolute unit cell orientations relative to the shape change, revealing the atomic-resolution mechanism for the photomechanical response and enabling the construction of a model that predicts an elongation of 7.4%, in good agreement with the experimental value. According to this model, the nanorod expansion does not result from an overall change in the volume of the unit cell, but rather from an anisotropic rearrangement of the molecular contents. The ability to understand quantitatively how molecular-level photochemistry generates mechanical displacements allows us to predict that the expansion could be tuned from +9% to -9.5% by controlling the initial orientation of the unit cell with respect to the nanorod axis. This application of NMR-assisted crystallography provides a new tool capable of tying the atomic-level structural rearrangement of the reacting molecular species to the mechanical response of a nanostructured sample.

The temperature-dependent fluorescence spectrum, decay rate, and spin quantum beats are examined in single tetracene crystals to gain insight into the mechanism of singlet fission. Over the temperature range of 250 K-500 K, the vibronic lineshape of the emission indicates that the singlet exciton becomes localized at 400 K. The fission process is insensitive to this localization and exhibits Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of 550 ± 50 cm-1. The damping rate of the triplet pair spin quantum beats in the delayed fluorescence also exhibits an Arrhenius temperature dependence with an activation energy of 165 ± 70 cm-1. All the data for T > 250 K are consistent with direct production of a spatially separated 1(T⋯T) state via a thermally activated process, analogous to spontaneous parametric downconversion of photons. For temperatures in the range of 20 K-250 K, the singlet exciton continues to undergo a rapid decay on the order of 200 ps, leaving a red-shifted emission that decays on the order of 100 ns. At very long times (≈1 µs), a delayed fluorescence component corresponding to the original S1 state can still be resolved, unlike in polycrystalline films. A kinetic analysis shows that the redshifted emission seen at lower temperatures cannot be an intermediate in the triplet production. When considered in the context of other results, our data suggest that the production of triplets in tetracene for temperatures below 250 K is a complex process that is sensitive to the presence of structural defects.

4-Fluoro-9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (4F-9AC) is a thermally reversible (T-type) photomechanical molecular crystal. The photomechanical response is driven by a [4 + 4] photodimerization reaction, while the photodimer dissociation determines the reset time. In this paper, both the chemical kinetics of dimer dissociation (using a microscopic fluorescence-recovery-after-photobleaching experiment) and mechanical reset dynamics (by imaging bending microneedles) for single 4F-9AC crystals are measured. The dissociation kinetics depend strongly on the initial concentration of photodimer, slowing down and becoming nonexponential at high dimer concentrations. This dose-dependent behavior is also observed in the mechanical response of bending microneedles. A new feature in the photomechanical behavior is identified: the ability of a very weak control beam to suppress dimer dissociation after large initial dimer conversions. This phenomenon provides a way to optically control the mechanical response of this photomechanical crystal. To gain physical insight into the origin of the nonexponential recovery curves, the experimental results are analyzed in terms of a standard first-order kinetic model and a nonlinear Finke-Watzky (FW) model. The FW model can qualitatively reproduce the transition from exponential to sigmoidal recovery with larger initial conversions, but neither model can reproduce the suppression of the recovery in the presence of a weak holding beam. These results highlight the need for more sophisticated theories to describe cooperative phenomena in solid-state crystalline reactions, as well as demonstrating how this behavior could lead to new properties and/or improved performance in photomechanical materials.

When a diamagnetic graphite plate is placed on top of a magnet, it is subject to both magnetic levitation and gravitational forces. Computational modeling is used to demonstrate that these forces can balance each other to allow a stable tilt angle θ to be attained when the graphite plate pivots on the magnet surface. θ depends on the magnetic susceptibility χmag, which can be controlled by using laser irradiation to change the temperature of the graphite. Over a limited temperature range, there is a linear relation between the angle change Δθ and the temperature change ΔT. This predicted behavior is confirmed experimentally using a graphite plate (5 × 5 × 0.83 mm) placed on top of a 7.5 cm diameter neodymium iron boride magnet with a surface field strength of ∼5000 G. Using a 532 nm laser, θ could be continuously tuned from 52° to 26° by varying the laser power between 20 and 800 mW. The response time was about 15 s at all powers. Higher laser powers were observed to lead to a complete loss of levitation, followed by recovery and oscillation in and out of the laser beam. The linear dependence of Δθ on power suggests that photothermal tilting of the graphite plate in a magnetic field provides a fatigue resistant way to achieve large angular deviations using an external light source. Covalently tethered bichromophores provide an ideal proving ground to develop strategies for controlling excited state behavior in chromophore assemblies. In this work, optical spectroscopy and electronic structure theory are combined to demonstrate that the oxidation state of a sulfur linker between anthracene chromophores gives control over not only the photophysics but also the photochemistry of the molecules. Altering the oxidation state of the sulfur linker does not change the geometry between chromophores, allowing electronic effects between chromophores to be isolated. Previously, we showed that excitonic states in sulfur-bridged terthiophene dimers were modulated by electronic screening of the sulfur lone pairs, but that the sulfur orbitals were not directly involved in these states. In the bridged anthracene dimers that are the subject of the current paper, the atomic orbitals of the unoxidized S linker can actively mix with the anthracene molecular orbitals to form new electronic states with enhanced charge transfer character, different excitonic coupling, and rapid (sub-nanosecond) intersystem crossing that depends on solvent polarity. However, the fully oxidized SO2 bridge restores purely through-space electronic coupling between anthracene chromophores and inhibits intersystem crossing. Photoexcitation leads to either internal conversion on a sub-20 picosecond timescale, or to the creation of a long-lived emissive state that is the likely precursor of the intramolecular [4 + 4] photodimerization. These results illustrate how chemical modification of a single atom in the covalent bridge can dramatically alter not only the photophysics but also the photochemistry of molecules.

Localized heating of an adhesive interface can separate glued substrates for recycling or reconfiguring. Light provides a way to deposit energy at this type of buried interface, but the photon energy must still be transformed into thermal energy. The deposition of an ultrathin (<1 µm) absorbing layer before gluing provides a way to build this photothermal capability into the bonded structure. To demonstrate this concept, a submicron absorbing layer composed of the dye Fluorescein 27 (F27) is applied to a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate that is glued to a second PMMA piece using a commercial cyanoacrylate adhesive. The laser debonding is characterized as function of dye layer thickness, applied pressure, and laser pulse fluence. A 450 nm thick dye layer retained a high adhesive strength of 3.5 MPa but can be debonded by a single 532 nm nanosecond laser pulse with a fluence ≤ 0.7 J cm−2. Decomposition of the absorbing layer resulted in rapid gas evolution that left the micron‐scale surface morphology of the PMMA substrate intact. This system enabled the fabrication of an optical analog to the exploding bolt, where a single laser pulse can impulsively separate a structural fastener. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microcrystals composed of the conjugated organic molecule perylene can be encapsulated beneath single-layer graphene using mild conditions. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy images show that the graphene exists as a conformal coating on top of the crystal. Raman spectroscopy indicates that the graphene is only slightly perturbed by the underlying crystal, probably due to strain. The graphene layer provides complete protection from a variety of solvents and prevents sublimation of the crystal at elevated temperatures. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements do not detect any quenching of the perylene emission by the graphene layer, although nonradiative energy transfer within a few nanometers of the crystal-graphene interface cannot be ruled out. The ability to encapsulate samples on a substrate under a graphene monolayer may provide a new way to access and interact with the organic crystal under ambient conditions.

In this study we investigate in detail the photophysics of naphthalene dimers covalently linked by a sulfur atom. We explore and rationalize how the oxidation state of the sulfur-bridging atom directly influences the photoluminescence of the dimer by enhancing or depriving its radiative and non-radiative relaxation pathways. In particular, we discuss how oxidation controls the amount of electronic transfer between the naphthalene moieties and the participation of the SO n bridge in the low-lying electronic transitions. We identify the sulfur electron lone-pairs as crucial actors in the non-radiative decay of the excited sulfide and sulfoxide dimers, which are predicted to proceed via a conical intersection (CI). Concretely, two types of CI have been identified for these dimers, which are associated with the photo-induced pyramidal inversion and reverse fragmentation mechanisms found in aryl sulfoxide dimers. The obtained results and conclusions are general enough to be extrapolated to other sulfur-bridged conjugated dimers, therefore proportionating novel strategies in the design of strongly photoluminescent organic molecules with controlled charge transfer.

Variably functionalized self-folding deep cavitands form an arrayed, fluorescent indicator displacement assay system for the detection of post-translationally modified (PTM) histone peptides. The hosts bind trimethyllysine (KMe3) groups, and use secondary upper rim interactions to provide more sensitive discrimination between targets with identical KMe3 binding handles. The sensor array uses multiple different recognition modes to distinguish between miniscule differences in target, such as identical lysine modifications at different sites of histone peptides. In addition, the sensor is affected by global changes in structure, so it is capable of discriminating between identical PTMs, at identical positions on amino acid fragments that vary only in peptide backbone length, and can be applied to detect non-methylation modifications such as acetylation and phosphorylations located multiple residues away from the targeted binding site. The synergistic application of multiple variables allows dual-mode deep cavitands to approach levels of recognition selectivity usually only seen with antibodies.

The production of hydrogen from water with semiconductor photocatalysts can be promoted by adding small amounts of metals to their surfaces. The resulting enhancement in photocatalytic activity is commonly attributed to a fast transfer of the excited electrons generated by photon absorption from the semiconductor to the metal, a step that prevents deexcitation back to the ground electronic state. Here we provide experimental evidence that suggests an alternative pathway that does not involve electron transfer to the metal but requires it to act as a catalyst for the recombination of the hydrogen atoms made via the reduction of protons on the surface of the semiconductor instead.

The development and characterization of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor for the direct detection of aerosolized influenza A virions is reported. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) are formed on QCM gold electrodes to provide a surface amenable for the immobilization of anti-influenza A antibodies using NHS/EDC coupling chemistry. The surface-bound antibody provides a selective and specific sensing interface for the capture of influenza virions. A nebulizer is used to create aerosolized samples and is directly connected to a chamber housing the antibody-modified crystal ("immunochip"). Upon exposure to the aerosolized virus, the interaction between the antibody and virus leads to a dampening of the oscillation frequency of the quartz crystal. The magnitude of frequency change is directly related to virus concentration. Control experiments using aerosols from chicken egg allantoic fluid and an anti-murine antibody based immunosensor confirm that the observed signal originates from specific viral binding on the chip surface. Step-by-step surface modification of MUA assembly, antibody attachment, and antibody-virus interaction are characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging analysis. Using the S/N = 3 principle, the limit of detection is estimated to be 4 virus particles/mL. The high sensitivity and real-time sensing scheme presented here can play an important role in the public health arena by offering a new analytical tool for identifying bio-contaminated areas and assisting in timely patient diagnosis.

The number of UV-induced (20 mJ cm(-2)) reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in nucleated epidermis is dependent upon the length of time the UV filter octocrylene, octylmethoxycinnamate, or benzophenone-3 remains on the skin surface. Two-photon fluorescence images acquired immediately after application of each formulation (2 mg cm(-2)) to the skin surface show that the number of ROS produced is dramatically reduced relative to the skin-UV filter control. After each UV filter remains on the skin surface for t=20 min, the number of ROS generated increases, although it remains below the number generated in the control. By t=60 min, the filters generate ROS above the control. The data show that when all three of the UV filters penetrate into the nucleated layers, the level of ROS increases above that produced naturally by epidermal chromophores under UV illumination.

Annihilation of excitons, where two excitons of similar energy interact with each other resulting in the disappearance of one, has long been recognized as playing an important role in multiexciton dynamics. Electronic couplings and exciton-phonon interactions, which are typically taken to be fixed in calculating exciton transfer rates, can in fact be subject to fluctuations, for example, due to exciton-exciton interactions and other electronic correlation effects. E. Quantum dynamics of excitons Molecular excitons are quantum mechanical objects and, in general, require quantum approaches to describe their dynamics. In a related effort, Wang I et al. i [29] develop a theory of emission power spectra in the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, including exciton-photon and exciton-phonon interactions in the presence of arbitrary media while distinguishing between coherent and incoherent regimes. The goal of this paper is to determine whether laser-induced surface melting can generate adhesive debonding. Commercial cyanoacrylate and acrylic adhesives are used to attach an aluminum (Al) cylinder to a transparent polymethyl(methacrylate) (PMMA) plate, and then a variable force is applied to create an axially loaded butt joint. High energy nanosecond laser pulses at 1064 and 532 nm are directed through the transparent PMMA to be absorbed at the Al surface, causing transient localized heating that leads to joint failure. The dependence of this debonding on both laser fluence (energy per area) and applied force are investigated. Single shot debonding occurs at fluences on the order of 0.47 J/cm2 for 1064 nm and 0.29 J/cm2 for 532 nm pulses with an applied pressure of 0.22 MPa. Characterization of the Al surface before and after laser impact confirms that the debonding arises from surface melting and causes only slight changes to the Al surface. A simple model of the debonding process is developed to explain the dependence of the debonding on the applied load. Single laser pulses can generate instantaneous, relatively clean separation of bonded joints, suggesting that laser debonding may be a promising strategy to initiate deadhesion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
