Abstract

We construct a Neural Network that approximates the matrix multiplication operator for any activation functions for which there exist a Neural Network which can approximate the scalar multiplication function. In particular, we use the Strassen algorithm for reducing the number of weights and layers needed for such Neural Network. This allows us to define another Neural Network for approximating the inverse matrix operator. Also, by relying on the Galerkin method, we apply those Neural Networks for resolving parametric elliptic PDEs for a whole set of parameters at the same time. Finally, we discuss the improvements with respect to prior results.

Abstract

This paper aims to address an interesting open problem, posed in the paper "Singular Optimal Control for a Transport-Diffusion Equation" of Sergio Guerrero and Gilles Lebeau in 2007. The problem involves studying the null controllability cost of a transport-diffusion equation with Neumann conditions, where the diffusivity coefficient is denoted by $\varepsilon>0$ and the velocity by $\mathfrak{B}(x,t)$. Our objective is twofold. First, we investigate the scenario where each velocity trajectory $\mathfrak{B}$ originating from $\overline{\Omega}$ enters the control region in a shorter time at a fixed entry time. By employing Agmon and dissipation inequalities, and Carleman estimate in the case $\mathfrak{B}(x,t)$ is the gradient of a time-dependent scalar field, we establish that the control cost remains bounded for sufficiently small $\varepsilon$ and large control time. Secondly, we explore the case where at least one trajectory fails to enter the control region and remains in $\Omega$. In this scenario, we prove that the control cost explodes exponentially when the diffusivity approaches zero and the control time is sufficiently small for general velocity.

3. The propagator field theory revisited: a Lorentz symmetry breaking approach

Abstract

It is well known that the propagator for a massive scalar field is ill-defined in the coordinate space for $d\geq2$, in particular it diverges at the light-cone; we show that by using Lorentz symmetry breaking weighted measures, an infinite family of propagators can be constructed in an in\-finite\-simal strip near the light-cone, which are labeled by the weight of the measure; hence, the results will provide a finite quantum amplitude for a massive particle for propagating on the light-cone. The propagators regarded as smooth two-points functions, increase within a region smaller than the Compton wavelength, and decrease beyond that wavelength, and eventually drop off for large arguments. Abstract

Making ideal decisions as a product leader in a web-facing company is extremely difficult. In addition to navigating the ambiguity of customer satisfaction and achieving business goals, one must also pave a path forward for ones' products and services to remain relevant, desirable, and profitable. Data and experimentation to test product hypotheses are key to informing product decisions. Online controlled experiments by A/B testing may provide the best data to support such decisions with high confidence, but can be time-consuming and expensive, especially when one wants to understand impact to key business metrics such as retention or long-term value. Offline experimentation allows one to rapidly iterate and test, but often cannot provide the same level of confidence, and cannot easily shine a light on impact on business metrics. We introduce a novel, lightweight, and flexible approach to investigating hypotheses, called scenario analysis, that aims to support product leaders' decisions using data about users and estimates of business metrics. Its strengths are that it can provide guidance on trade-offs that are incurred by growing or shifting consumption, estimate trends in long-term outcomes like retention and other important business metrics, and can generate hypotheses about relationships between metrics at scale.

Abstract

As the space domain becomes increasingly congested, autonomy is proposed as one approach to enable small numbers of human ground operators to manage large constellations of satellites and tackle more complex missions such as on-orbit or in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing. One of the biggest challenges in developing novel spacecraft autonomy is mechanisms to test and evaluate their performance. Testing spacecraft autonomy on-orbit can be high risk and prohibitively expensive. An alternative method is to test autonomy terrestrially using satellite surrogates such as attitude test beds on air bearings or drones for translational motion visualization. Against this background, this work develops an approach to evaluate autonomous spacecraft behavior using a surrogate platform, namely a micro-quadcopter drone developed by the Bitcraze team, the Crazyflie 2.1. The Crazyflie drones are increasingly becoming ubiquitous in flight testing labs because they are affordable, open source, readily available, and include expansion decks which allow for features such as positioning systems, distance and/or motion sensors, wireless charging, and AI capabilities. In this paper, models of Crazyflie drones are used to simulate the relative motion dynamics of spacecraft under linearized Clohessy-Wiltshire dynamics in elliptical natural motion trajectories, in pre-generated docking trajectories, and via trajectories output by neural network control systems.

Abstract

Stratospheric balloons have emerged as an affordable and flexible alternative to traditional spacecrafts as they are implemented using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment without following strict methodologies. HERCCULES is a stratospheric balloon mission that aims to characterize the convective heat and radiative environment in the stratosphere. The purpose of this article is to present the HERCCULES onboard software (OBSW) whose design and complexity is comparable to that of satellite systems, since it must control about sixty COTS equipment using a single Raspberry Pi 4B as onboard computer and ensure the real-time requirements. Compared to similar systems, novel contributions are presented as the OBSW is developed following modelbased and component-based approaches using the TASTE toolchain from the European Space Agency (ESA) for automatic code generation. Besides, the OBSW is verified and validated following the ESA standards and the results obtained demonstrate the suitability and efficiency of the solution and the selected methodologies.

9. Tracking controllability for the heat equation

Abstract

We study the tracking or sidewise controllability of the heat equation. More precisely, we seek for controls that, acting on part of the boundary of the domain where the heat process evolves, aim to assure that the normal trace or flux on the complementary set tracks a given trajectory. The dual equivalent observability problem is identified. It consists on estimating the boundary sources, localized on a given subset of the boundary, out of boundary measurements on the complementary subset. Classical unique continuation and smoothing properties of the heat equation allow us proving approximate tracking controllability properties and the smoothness of the class of trackable trajectories. We also develop a new transmutation method which allows to transfer known results on the sidewise controllability of the wave equation to the tracking controllability of the heat one. Using the flatness approach we also give explicit estimates on the cost of approximate tracking control. The analysis is complemented with a discussion of some possible variants of these results and a list of open problems.

Abstract

Objetivo: El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar si la potencia es un buen indicador del rendimiento en competiciones de bicicleta todo terreno (BTT), específicamente en la SuperCup cross country olímpico (XCO) BTT de Banyoles-España. Metodología: Se monitorizó la potencia de 10 ciclistas hombres profesionales de XCO-BTT durante la carrera y se analizó su relación con el rendimiento durante las subidas, las bajadas y los tramos llanos de la vuelta más rápida. Resultados: Se encontró una correlación fuerte entre el rendimiento y la potencia media (Potmed) (R² = -.652, p = .041), y muy fuerte entre el rendimiento y la potencia relativa (Potrel) (R² = -.887, p = .001); durante las subidas, la correlación fue fuerte entre el rendimiento y la Potmed (R² = -.719, p = .019), y muy fuerte entre el rendimiento y la Potrel (R² = -.888, p = .001). La relación entre el rendimiento y la Potmed durante los tramos llanos fue fuerte (R² = -.780, p = .008), y muy fuerte entre el rendimiento y la Potrel (R² = -.821, p = .004). Durante las bajadas no se encontró correlación entre el rendimiento y la Potmed y se encontró una correlación moderada entre el rendimiento y la Potrel (R² = -.530, p = .115). Discusión: Este estudio destaca la importancia de la Potrel como indicador del rendimiento en las competiciones de XCO-BTT. Conclusiones: El gran hallazgo de este estudio ha sido que la potencia no es un buen indicador del rendimiento durante las bajadas, donde este parece determinado por aspectos técnicos de conducción.

Abstract

Phloroglucinol is a key byproduct of gut microbial metabolism that has been widely used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome. Here, we demonstrate that phloroglucinol tempers macrophage responses to pro-inflammatory pathogens and stimuli. In vivo, phloroglucinol administration decreases gut and extraintestinal inflammation in murine models of inflammatory bowel disease and systemic infection. The metabolite induces modest modifications in the microbiota. However, the presence of an active microbiota is required to preserve its anti-inflammatory activity. Remarkably, the protective effect of phloroglucinol lasts partially at least 6 months. Single-cell transcriptomic analysis of bone marrow progenitors demonstrates the capacity of the metabolite to induce long-lasting innate immune training in hematopoietic lineages, at least partially through the participation of the receptor and transcription factor, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). Phloroglucinol induces alterations in metabolic and epigenetic pathways that are most prevalent in upstream progenitors as hallmarks of central trained immunity. These data identify phloroglucinol as a dietary-derived compound capable of inducing central trained immunity and modulating the response of the host to inflammatory insults.

Abstract Testicular large B‐cell lymphoma (TLBCL) is an infrequent and aggressive lymphoma arising in an immune‐privileged site and has recently been recognized as a distinct entity from diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We describe the genetic features of TLBCL and compare them with published series of nodal DLBCL and primary large B‐cell lymphomas of the CNS (PCNSL). We collected 61 patients with TLBCL. We performed targeted next‐generation sequencing, copy number arrays, and fluorescent in situ hybridization to assess chromosomal rearrangements in 40 cases with available material. Seventy percent of the cases showed localized stages. BCL6 rearrangements were detected in 36% of cases, and no concomitant BCL2 and MYC rearrangements were found. Abstract

This paper deals with the exact controllability to the trajectories of the one--phase Stefan problem in one spatial dimension. This is a free-boundary problem that models solidification and melting processes. It is assumed that the physical domain is filled by a medium whose state is liquid on the left and solid, with constant temperature, on the right. In between we find a free-boundary (the interface that separates the liquid from the solid). In the liquid domain, a parabolic equation completed with initial and boundary conditions must be satisfied by the temperature. On the interface, an additional free-boundary requirement, called the {\it Stefan condition,} is imposed. We prove the local exact controllability to the (smooth) trajectories. To this purpose, we first reformulate the problem as the local null controllability of a coupled PDE-ODE system with distributed controls. Then, a new Carleman inequality for the adjoint of the linearized PDE-ODE system, coupled on the boundary through nonlocal in space and memory terms, is presented. This leads to the null controllability of an appropriate linear system. Finally, a local result is obtained via local inversion, by using {\it Liusternik-Graves' Theorem}. 28. The Role of Activeness for Potentiating Learning in LMOOCs for Vulnerable Groups

Abstract

In this article the authors present a new concept, activeness, as a dynamic psychological and cognitive state of effective engaged language learning. It is defined in terms of "investment," "integration" and "performance," and empowers vulnerable students to exercise control of their learning and progress based on their needs and desired outcomes. It is argued that activeness has a double didactic and linguistic dimension, implemented as a design feature in course materials and activities, and more importantly, promoted in forum communication. Therefore, participating in a strategically designed and scaffolded inclusive LMOOC can serve the triple purpose of enabling more effective target language learning, empowering vulnerable learners, and developing student potential to become engaged members of the language learning community. This engagement is arguably an important step towards doing the same in the real world. A study is presented of the second edition of an LMOOC on Spanish for immediate needs for vulnerable groups to explore the ways in which activeness was incorporated into the course and the effects it had. This research was conducted following a mixed-method approach which involved the platform's analytics, forum messages, pre- and post-questionnaires, and course observation. Evidence is provided of the progressive presence of activeness across different linguistic levels and the effect it had on students' satisfaction, course completion, and linguistic interaction. The results from this LMOOC provide evidence that it is possible to create a supportive online environment that meets the learning needs of vulnerable groups.

Abstract

Real-time estimation of fish biomass plays a crucial role in real-world fishery production, as it helps formulate feeding strategies and other management decisions. In this paper, a dense fish counting network called Swin-CSRNet is proposed. Specifically, the VGG16 layer in the front-end is replaced with the Swin transformer to extract image features more efficiently. Additionally, a squeeze-and-excitation (SE) module is introduced to enhance feature representation by dynamically adjusting the importance of each channel through “squeeze” and “excitation”, making the extracted features more focused and effective. Finally, a multi-scale fusion (MSF) module is added after the back-end to fully utilize the multi-scale feature information, enhancing the model’s ability to capture multi-scale details. The experiment demonstrates that Swin-CSRNet achieved excellent results with MAE, RMSE, and MAPE and a correlation coefficient R2 of 11.22, 15.32, 5.18%, and 0.954, respectively. Meanwhile, compared to the original network, the parameter size and computational complexity of Swin-CSRNet were reduced by 70.17% and 79.05%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed method not only counts the number of fish with higher speed and accuracy but also contributes to advancing the automation of aquaculture.

43. Toward a Framework for Language MOOCs and Mobile Assisted Language Learning

Abstract

In this article a proposal is presented for a theoretical framework that could provide the structure and coherence needed for the development of effective LMOOCs (Language MOOCs) and MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) apps in a systematic way that would facilitate online second language learning. The framework is argued to be appropriate for language teaching and learning since it could be used for the elaboration of online courses such as LMOOCs and syllabi and didactic materials for MALL apps, regardless of the number of students. It has been refined during the process of designing and developing a Professional English LMOOC and the examples provided here are from that course. The framework is built upon the CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment) since it offers a way to structure the knowledge and skills required in second language learning in a way which is coherent with the constructivist paradigm, following widely accepted European recommendations. It has been adopted because it provides a notional-functional classification of language use and learning ("elegantly" capturing the vastness and complexity of languages and their functional nature), and it is the first general attempt to produce a taxonomy of the elements that intervene in language use and learning, enabling comparable syllabi to be created for all European languages.

Abstract

NESIM-RT is a specialized tool designed for simulating neuromorphic systems. In this new release we extend its capabilities to include state-of-the art models like the AdexLIF and Izhikevich, and to incorporate dynamic synaptic mechanisms such as Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP). With these new features, researchers can now observe in real-time how different parameters influence these models and learning rules, thereby gaining deeper insights into neuronal function and network dynamics.
