Abstract

The franciscana, Pontoporia blainvillei, is an endemic dolphin off the east coast of South America and is considered the most endangered cetacean in the western South Atlantic. In the present study, we analyzed the muscle tissue of 24 franciscana dolphins found on the coast of Espírito Santo (ES) between 2010 and 2019 to investigate trophic ecology using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis. In addition, 127 prey were analyzed to identify the preferred prey. The most important prey species in the diet of the franciscana dolphins were Trichiurus lepturus, Chirocentrodon bleekerianus, and Pellona harroweri. The franciscana dolphins were grouped into three subareas according to where they were collected throughout the distribution: 1 (North), 2 (Center), and 3 (South). In subarea 1, the preferred prey were Stellifer spp., Isopisthus parvipinnis, and P. harroweri, while in subareas 2 and 3, the prey were similar, changing the order of preference among them (Stellifer spp., T. lepturus, and C. bleekerianus). Finally, we identify two possible ecological groups of franciscana dolphins on the coast of ES, influenced by different carbon sources. Our results improve our understanding of the franciscana dolphin's trophic ecology and habitat use, providing new information and guidelines for species conservation in the region. Abstract

Guiana dolphins, Sotalia guianensis, are vulnerable to extinction along their distribution on the Brazilian coast and assessing chemical pollution is of utmost importance for their conservation. For this study, 51 carcasses of Guiana dolphins were sampled across the Brazilian coast to investigate legacy and emerging brominated flame retardants (BFRs) as well as the naturally-produced MeO-BDEs. PBDEs and MeO-BDEs were detected in all samples analyzed, whereas emerging BFRs were detected in 16 % of the samples, all in Rio de Janeiro state. PBDE concentrations varied between 2.24 and 799 ng.g-1 lipid weight (lw), emerging BFRs between 0.12 and 1.51 ng.g-1 lw and MeO-BDEs between 3.82 and 10,247 ng.g-1 lw. Concentrations of legacy and emerging BFRs and natural compounds varied considerably according to the sampling site and reflected both the local anthropogenic impact of the region and the diversity/mass of biosynthesizers. The PBDE concentrations are lower than what was found for delphinids in the Northern Hemisphere around the same sampling period and most sampling sites presented mean concentrations lower than the limits for endocrine disruption known to date for marine mammals of 460 ng.g-1 lw, except for sampled from Santa Catarina state, in Southern Brazil. Conversely, MeO-BDE concentrations are higher than those of the Northern Hemisphere, particularly close to the Abrolhos Bans and Royal Charlotte formation, that are hotspots for biodiversity. Despite the elevated concentrations reported for this group, there is not much information regarding the effects of such elevated concentrations for these marine mammals. The distinct patterns observed along the Brazilian coast show that organobrominated compounds can be used to identify the ecological segregation of delphinids and that conservation actions should be planned considering the local threats.

Abstract

The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) is a small-bodied dolphin distributed along the Atlantic coast from Honduras to southern Brazil. It preys on fish, squid and shrimps. Several seminal studies have described its diet, yet relationships between the species’ feeding plasticity and climate gradients remain unknown. We compiled a large database of Guiana dolphin stomach remains from southeast coastal Brazil. We described the species’ diet using a number of descriptors, multivariate analysis of variance to test possible differentiation in diet composition, and the Morisita index to estimate the extent of trophic niche overlap between groups. We also analysed feeding plasticity using a regression tree analysis followed by an ordination analysis. We present new records of prey for the species in Brazil. Our results suggest that the Guiana dolphin has opportunistic feeding habits, which may exhibit the species’ feeding plasticity. Such feeding plasticity is associated with the capability to prey throughout a wide array of climate conditions. From a conservation ecology perspective, we conclude that estuaries—even ones that are over-depleted and succumbing to human impacts—are paramount environments for the Guiana dolphin, serving as important sources of prey for the species and other sympatric marine mammals., Sotalia guianensis es un delfín de pequeño porte cuya área de ditribución abarca el litoral atlántico desde Honduras hasta el sur de Brasil. Al día de la fecha, pese a que la dieta de este delfín ya ha sido descrita en anteriores trabajos, las posibles relaciones entre la ingesta de determinadas presas y los cambios en las variables ambientales aún se ignoran. En nuestro trabajo, describimos la dieta de estos delfines a través del análisis de contenidos estomacales y recopilamos una extensa base de datos a efectos de desvendar posibles patrones en la ecologia trófica de la especie a lo largo de la costa atlántica sudoriental brasileña. Usamos un conjunto de descriptores para caracterizar la dieta de estos delfines, probamos posibles diferencias por medio de un análisis de variancia multivariada y cuantificamos el grado de solapamiento trófico entre grupos utilizando el índice de Morisita. Además, analizamos la plasticidad trófica de la especie por medio de un árbol de regresión seguido de una ordenación. Presentamos nuevos registros de presas para la especie en Brasil. Los principales resultados que obtuvimos confirman los hábitos oportunistas que caracterizan a estos delfines y evidencian que sus presas más frecuentes y abundantes son a su vez abundantes en estuarios, como peces pertenecientes a la familia Sciaenidae. Dichos hábitos oportunistas podrían estar relacionados con la característica plasticidad trófica de la especie. Corroboramos que la plasticidad trófica del delfín costero se debe a su capacidad de predar en un amplio rango de condiciones climáticas, aunque sus presas más comunes se encuentran en estuarios. Desde el punto de vista de la Ecología de la Conservación, concluímos que los estuarios son ambientes de relevante importancia para estos delfines y otros mamíferos marinos simpátricos, por ser éstos una importante fuente de recursos alimenticios, aunque están en ambientes que soportan un fuerte impacto antrópico.

Abstract

The franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) is the most threatened dolphin species in the Brazilian coast. The study area is the northernmost distribution range of the species and the stock inhabiting the northern State of Espírito Santo is isolated from other populations. Likewise, there is no information on feeding habits of franciscana dolphins in the study area. Hence, the aim of this study was to describe the diet of franciscana dolphins from the Northern Espírito Santo State coast. Stomach contents of 18 individuals stranded in the study area between January 2012 and March 2015 were analyzed. We ranked each specific prey item found in stomach contents using the frequency of occurrence, the total count of prey items, and the relative abundance of prey. It was found novel records of prey species for the franciscana dolphin and we explored possible feeding strategy patterns. The fish Isopisthus parvipinnis was the most common prey consumed by the dolphins. Our report agrees with previous studies showing demersal fish species, mainly sciaenids, as the most common preys consumed by the franciscana dolphin followed by pelagic fish species., A toninha (Pontoporia blainvillei) é considerada a espécie de golfinho mais ameaçada da costa do Brasil. As populações de toninha que ocorrem no litoral norte do estado do Espírito Santo constituem populações isoladas, separadas por um hiato geográfico das demais populações. Da mesma forma, não há informações sobre hábitos alimentares de golfinhos franciscanos na área de estudo. O objetivo desta pesquisa é descrever a dieta da toninha na costa norte do Espírito Santo. Foram analisados 18 conteúdos estomacais de carcaças encalhadas no período de janeiro/2012 a março/2015. Foram contabilizados os itens da dieta identificados e calculadas a frequência de ocorrência e a abundância relativa das presas. São apresentados novos registros de presas para a espécie. A presa mais comum encontrada na dieta da toninha foi Isopisthus parvipinnins. Assim como em outras localidades, a família Sciaenidae foi o grupo mais importante na dieta de Pontoporia blainvillei no Espírito Santo, seguida por presas pelágicas da ordem Clupeiformes.

Abstract

Diet analysis allows exploring how coastal dolphins interact with the environment and their role in the marine food webs. We studied the diet and feeding ecology of the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, through analysis of stomach content from 42 animals stranded on the eastern coast of Brazil. A total of 1,336 semidigested prey items (fish, otoliths, cephalopod beaks, and crustaceans) were identified. Teleost fish comprised the most frequent food item (92% of the total), followed by cephalopods, and crustaceans. Prey belonged to 34 taxa and richness in individual stomachs varied from 1 to 15 prey taxa. Prey were generally small, but showed a significant trend to increase in size with dolphin length. The main prey of Guiana dolphins were demersal, estuarine, and sound‐making fish such as catfish and sciaenids. No sex‐related differences in diet were found. Diet composition varied seasonally and occurrence of prey items was coherent with breeding or high abundance periods of some fish species and squids. Our study shows the importance of demersal prey from estuarine and soft‐sediment habitats to Guiana dolphin in the Abrolhos Bank and reveals that feeding habits are generalist and opportunistic, with diet reflecting the seasonal abundance and availability of prey. Abstract

The skeleton is often the only remaining structure of the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, after decomposition of carcasses. This study investigates the bone development of Guiana dolphins beached on the coastline of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. External measurements of 43 thoracic limbs were obtained. Internal structures (radius, ulna, and humerus) were also measured. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to evaluate bone mass. The variables concerning the thoracic limb were tested using the Akaike information criterion to scale the best growth model when correlated with age and by the allometric model when they were correlated with total body length. The efficacy of DXA was also tested. The Brody growth model (best fit) showed that the thoracic limb stopped growing around the age of 2, while total body length ceased to grow at the age of 5.5. The thoracic limb presented early growth (negative allometry) compared with total body length. The methodology used to measure bone mass was efficient when considering ash weight. No difference in bone density was observed between the right and the left forelimb (P> 0.05), male and female (P> 0.05), or between dolphins found in the 3 sites we monitored. The deposition of bone mass was high in the early stages of life, and stabilization occurred at around the age of 13.O esqueleto muitas vezes é a estrutura que resta da espécie Sotalia guianensis, boto-cinza, devido ao processo de decomposição em que as carcaças são encontradas. O objetivo do presente estudo é entender o desenvolvimento ósseo dos animais encontrados encalhados no litoral do Espírito Santo. Para isso, 43 pares de nadadeiras peitorais foram submetidos às mensurações externas e de estruturas ósseas internas (rádio, ulna e úmero) e à técnica de absorciometria de raio-x de dupla energia (DEXA) para massa óssea. As variáveis das nadadeiras foram testadas pelo critério de Akaike para escalonamento do melhor modelo de crescimento quando correlacionadas com a idade, e para o modelo alométrico quando correlacionadas com o comprimento total (CT). Foi testada a eficácia da DEXA. através do modelo de crescimento de Brody (melhor ajuste) e pode-se observar que as nadadeiras param de crescer por volta dos 2 anos de idade e o comprimento total do corpo aos 5.5 anos, apresentando essas estruturas crescimento precoce (alometria negativa) em relação ao CT. A metodologia aplicada para mensuração da massa óssea mostrou-se eficaz quando correlacionada com peso das cinzas. Não houve diferença de densidade óssea entre nadadeira direita e esquerda (P> 0.05), macho e fêmea (P> 0.05) e nem entre os animais dos três diferentes locais de ocorrência, pois todos estavam dentro do mesmo intervalo de confiança. A deposição da massa óssea é acentuada no início da vida com posterior estabilização por volta dos13 anos de idade.

Abstract

Franciscanas are the most endangered dolphins in the Southwestern Atlantic. Due to their coastal and estuarine habits, franciscanas suffer from extensive fisheries bycatch, as well as from habitat loss and degradation. Four Franciscana Management Areas (FMA), proposed based on biology, demography, morphology and genetic data, were incorporated into management planning and in the delineation of research efforts. We re-evaluated that proposal through the analysis of control region sequences from franciscanas throughout their distribution range (N = 162), including novel sequences from the northern limit of the species and two other previously unsampled localities in Brazil. A deep evolutionary break was observed between franciscanas from the northern and southern portions of the species distribution, indicating that they must be managed as two Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESU). Furthermore, additional FMAs should be recognised to accommodate the genetic differentiation found in each ESU. These results have immediate consequences for the conservation and management of this endangered species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
