Abstract

Supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycles have been identified as technology enablers for increasing the cost-competitiveness of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants. Compared to steam cycles, sCO2 cycles have the advantage of allowing higher inlet turbine temperatures, while also deploying turbomachinery that can be a ten-fold more compact. Ongoing research in CSP focuses mainly in developing new receiver and storage concepts able to withstand such required higher temperatures, alongside new heat exchangers that enable coupling to a sCO2 cycle. Meanwhile, advancements in sCO2 turbomachinery have taken place in research projects aimed at investigating the technical feasibility of the cycle, including the optimized design of its individual components and new cycle configurations. Among these, only few focus in demonstrating a full-integrated system, including cycle control and dynamics, and only two worldwide have started plans for MW-scale pilots, none of them in Europe. The EU-funded SOLARSCO2OL project aims at demonstrating a first-of-a-k ind 2 MW gross simple-recuperated sCO2 Brayton cycle driven by heat provided by molten salt s similar to those deployed in commercial CSP plants, which are able to operate at temperatures of up to 580°C. Abstract

High efficiency, flexibility and competitive capital costs make supercritical CO2 (sCO2) systems a promising technology for renewable power generation in a low carbon energy scenario. Recently, innovative supercritical systems have been studied in the literature and proposed by DOE-NETL (STEP project) and a few projects in the EU Horizon 2020 program aiming to demonstrate supercritical CO2 Brayton power plants, promising superior techno-economic features than steam cycles particularly at high temperatures. The H2020 SOLARSCO2OL project1, which started in 2020, is building the first European MW-scale sCO2 demonstration plant and has been specifically tailored for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) applications. This paper presents the first offdesign analysis of such a demonstrator, which is based on a simply recuperated sCO2 cycle. The part-load analysis ranged from 50% of nominal up to a 105% peak load, discussing the impact on compressor and turbine operating conditions. The whole system dynamic model has been developed in TRANSEO MATLAB® environment. Full operational envelop has been determined considering cycle main constraints, such as maximum turbine inlet temperature and minimum pressure at compressor inlet. The off-design performance analysis highlights the most relevant relationships among the main part-load regulating parameters, namely mass flow rate, total mass in the loop, and available heat source. The results show specific features of different control approaches, discussing the pros and cons of each solution, considering also its upscale towards commercial applications. Abstract

In questo lavoro vengono presentate due estensioni del modello Cluster Weighted (un modello mistura di regressioni che considera non solo la distribuzione condizionata ma anche la distribuzione marginale delle covariate). La prima estensione proposta presenta il modello GAM-CWM. Si tratta di un modello molto flessibile, in grado di descrivere relazioni complesse tra una variabile risposta e un insieme di covariate in ogni componente della mistura. In questo modello proposto la classe dei Generalized Additive Models è stata inserita all’interno del framework CWM. La seconda estensione, è relativa alla regressione beta che rappresenta l'approccio standard per modellare una variabile dipendente in [0,1]. In alcune situazioni, un problema che potrebbe sorgere è una conseguenza diretta della flessibilità della distribuzione beta, perché quando viene utilizzata come componente in un modello mistura potrebbe essere troppo flessibile a causa della grande varietà di forme (incluse le forme multimodali) che può assumere. In questo caso quindi può essere difficile capire e interpretare il significato di ciascun gruppo latente. Per questo motivo, abbiamo sviluppato un'estensione dei modelli mistura di beta focalizzandoci sul sottoinsieme della distribuzioni beta unimodali, con l'obiettivo di migliorare l'interpretazione di ciascun componente e quindi interpretare meglio il rispettivo cluster nella popolazione. Infine, un pacchetto R in fase di sviluppo che sarà pubblicato sul CRAN implementa le metodologie proposte. La stima di questi modelli viene eseguita tramite la massima verosimiglianza con l'algoritmo EM. Con dati simulati e reali esaminiamo le prestazioni, i limiti e i benefici confrontando i nuovi modelli proposti con modelli simili presentati e disponibili in letteratura., In this work two extensions of Cluster Weighted Models (a mixture model with random covariate) are presented for model-based clustering applications. The first presents the Generalized Additive Cluster Weighted Model. This is a very flexible model, able to capture complex relations between a response variable and a set of covariates in each mixture component introducing the Generalized Additive Model into the CWM framework. The second, is related to the beta regression that represents the standard approach to model a dependent variable with the range in the unit interval [0,1]. In some situations, a problem that could arise is a direct consequence of flexibility of the beta distribution, because when it is considered as a mixture component it may be too flexible due to the great variety of shapes (including multi-modal shapes) that can assume so that it may be difficult to understand easily the real meaning of each component. For this reason, we developed an extension of the beta mixture models focusing on the subset of unimodal beta distribution, with the aim of improving the interpretation of each mixture component and then identifying better the respective cluster in the population. Finally, an R package under development that will published on the CRAN implements the proposed methodologies. The estimation of these models is performed via maximum likelihood with EM algorithm. With simulated and real data we investigate the performances, limits and benefits comparing this model with other models related to it.

Abstract

A network architecture containing the capabilities offered by the Message Handling System (MHS) to the PRODAT Land Mobile Satellite System (LMSS) is described taking into account the constraints of a preexisting satellite system which is going to become operational. The mapping between MHS services and PRODAT requirements is also reported and shows that the supplied performance can be significantly enhanced to both fixed and mobile users. The impact of the insertion of additional features on the system structure, especially on the centralized control unit, are also addressed.

Abstract

In this paper, we develop a visualization process for partial orders derived from considering many numerical indicators on a statistical population. The issue is relevant, particularly in the field of socio-economic evaluation, where explicitly taking into account incomparabilities among individuals proves much more informative than adhering to classical aggregative and compensative approaches, which collapse complexity into unidimensional rankings. We propose a process of visual analysis based on a combination of tools and concepts from partial order theory, multivariate statistics and visual design. We develop the process through a real example, based on data pertaining to regional competitiveness in Europe.

Abstract

Using a large sample of D+→K−π+μ+ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic form factor ratios: rv and r2. We find rv=1.504±0.057±0.039 and r2=0.875±0.049±0.064. Our form factor results include the effects of the s-wave interference discussed in Phys. Lett. B 535 (2002) 43.

Abstract

We present a search for a charmed pentaquark decaying strongly to D(*)-p. Finding no evidence for such a state, we set limits on the cross-section times branching ratio relative to D*- and D- under particular assumptions about the production mechanism.

Abstract

A high statistics sample of photoproduced charm particles from the FOCUS (E831) experiment at Fermilab has been used to measure the D0 and D+ lifetimes. Using about 210000 D0 and 110000 D+ events we obtained the following values: 409.6±1.1 (statistical)±1.5 (systematic) fs for D0 and 1039.4±4.3 (statistical) ±7.0 (systematic) fs for D+.

Abstract

The large amount of data produced by the ATLAS experiment needs new computing paradigms for data processing and analysis, involving many Computing Centres spread around the world. The computing workload is managed by regional federations, called Clouds. The Italian Cloud consists of a main (Tier-1) centre, located in Bologna, four secondary (Tier-2) centres, and a few smaller (Tier-3) sites. In this contribution we describe the Italian Cloud site facilities and the activities of Data Processing, Analysis, Simulation and Software Development performed within the Cloud, and we discuss the tests of the new Computing Technologies contributing to the ATLAS Computing Model evolution.
