Abstract

Nell’ambito della sua mission di Agenzia Nazionale per le nuove tecnologie, l’energia e lo sviluppo economico sostenibile, l’ENEA è focalizzata in modo preminente sulla ricerca ‘applicata’, ovvero sul rendere disponibili tecnologie innovative e servizi avanzati nei diversi settori di competenza, al mondo delle imprese, alle pubbliche amministrazioni e agli stessi cittadini . Da questo punto di vista, l’economia circolare è una delle priorità strategiche e si concretizza attraverso numerosi progetti operativi con l’obiettivo di andare ‘oltre gli slogan’ e tradurre in realtà il principio fondante della chiusura dei cicli, quale volano di crescita e competitività e, allo stesso tempo, strumento essenziale per un modello di società incentrato sulla sostenibilità. In questo opuscolo sono illustrati alcuni dei progetti, delle iniziative e delle attività, ma anche gli strumenti, le metodologie, gli approcci e i modelli che ENEA sta mettendo in campo per supportare la trasformazione verso l’economia circolare, con un focus anche sulla formazione ed informazione, aspetti di grande rilievo per operare il cambiamento culturale e di comportamenti necessario. In questi progetti il Dipartimento “Sostenibilità dei Sistemi Produttivi e Territoriali” (SSPT) ha un ruolo di primo piano, come coordinatore o referente di attività in collaborazione con altri Dipartimenti dell’Agenzia, partner nazionali ed internazionali, imprese e istituzioni centrali locali, ed altri soggetti a livello territoriale e urbano. Queste attività impegnano oltre cento ricercatori e tecnologi del Dipartimento SSPT e una rete di infrastrutture, hall tecnologiche, impianti pilota e laboratori analitici avanzati specializzati nell’eco-innovazione di processo, di prodotto e di sistema. I progetti consentono di applicare l’economia circolare in diversi ambiti applicativi quali: • Aree urbane: ENEA progetta e sviluppa modelli e sistemi di gestione integrata e circolare di funzionamento urbano per città più sostenibili, circolari e inclusive, per promuovere stili di vita e consumo sostenibili, per effettuare una corretta gestione dell’acqua e dei rifiuti urbani anche in chiave di valorizzazione, salvaguardare salute e sicurezza, stimolare le industrie culturali, turismo e best practices in contesti urbani e periurbani; • Territorio e mare: ENEA pianifica e sviluppa processi e metodologie per la gestione sostenibile di territorio e mare in ottica di economia circolare attraverso la Gestione porti e aree costiere, il Turismo sostenibile, lo sviluppo della filiera ittica; • Sistema industriale: ENEA sviluppa e implementa tecnologie e metodologie per modelli di produzione e consumo più sostenibili e rigenerativi a supporto dell’industria con tecnologie innovative e nuovi modelli di business (simbiosi industriale, Modelli di circular design, Sharing economy, etc), strumenti per le imprese, riqualificazione di siti industriali in ottica circolare; • Catena del valore: ENEA sviluppa approcci di sistema per promuovere e facilitare la chiusura dei cicli nelle filiere produttive e lungo il ciclo di vita di prodotti e materiali attraverso attività per promuovere la collaborazione tra diversi attori e settori, approccio integrato e multidisciplinare (life cycle thinking e misura della circolarità), nuovi modelli di business e analisi di mercato.

Abstract

Il Circular Economy Network (CEN) è un progetto che si propone, sulla spinta della strategia europee, di stimolare nel nostro Paese uno sviluppo dell’economia circolare capace di sostenere le sfide climatiche, ecologiche e sociali proposte dalla green economy, accrescendo al tempo stesso la competitività delle nostre imprese sui mercati internazionali. Esso nasce da un’iniziativa della Fondazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile ed è aperto a tutte le imprese che intendono condividere queste finalità mediante assunzione di azioni e impegni concreti. Oggi vi partecipano come promotori ben 13 soggetti, a cui si affiancano alcune decine di aderenti. Il lavoro del Circular Economy Network si basa su alcuni assi principali: promuovere, raccogliere e divulgare studi, ricerche ed elaborazioni sull’economia circolare; definire gli indicatori chiave di circolarità e analizzare le performance nazionali; effettuare la ricognizione delle principali criticità e delle barriere da rimuovere, indicando le possibili soluzioni; elaborare strategie, policy e misure da proporre ai decisori politici, favorendo una positiva interlocuzione tra il mondo delle imprese e le istituzioni; valorizzare e contribuire alla diffusione delle buone pratiche e delle migliori tecniche.

Abstract

The building sector is one of the key sectors to achieve the 20/20/20 targets of the EU as there is the potential to lead to significant energy savings reducing the EU’s total energy consumption by 5-6% and lowering CO2 emissions by 5%. One powerful mechanism to apply principle and criteria of nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB). This work, done in the framework of the agreement between the Italian Ministry of Economic development and ENEA on the “Research of electric system” (Ricerca di Sistema Elettrico), has the aim to evaluate the environmental impacts of the technological improvements needed for enhancing the performances of an average building to a nZEB (or at least in the direction of a nZEB), performing a comparative Life Cycle Assessment study. Data on building upgrading and energy consumption reduction come from a test case performed by Università degli Studi di Palermo.

Abstract

This paper reports the activity, promoted by the Italian agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development (ENEA), in the framework of the project for the development and implementation of the first Italian Platform for Industrial Symbiosis implemented in Sicily (2011-2015). The goals of the project were: to provide a methodology and an instrument for industrial symbiosis implementation at regional scale, to implement a IS Platform as a support to SMEs to individuate symbiosis opportunities in the region. The whole approach includes: network activation, platform architecture design and implementation, analysis of the productive sector in Sicily, data collection and companies involvement. In particular the paper focuses on the activities developed for companies’ network creation trough a preliminary analysis of the predominant productive sectors followed by the organization of operative meetings in Sicily for companies’ involvement, analysis of potential synergies and resources sharing, and finally platform population. During the first two meetings more than 80 SME were linked giving rise to almost 400 output resources and almost 180 input resources. More than 690 potential matches were found between the participating enterprises showing interesting opportunities both for substituting resources with waste products in real and virtual cases and for sharing waste management services and infrastructures. The discussion occurred during the meeting has remarked the significance and the consequences of the regulatory and control system on IS application, underlining the necessary participation of local stakeholders and control authorities. It has also emerged the need to identify predominant productive activities in well-defined territorial contexts where to investigate the specific/local tangles taking into account legislative and technical-economic feasibility. Technical dossiers on three main resource streams (wastes from processing stone materials; plastics and agro-industrial wastes), which may generate the more interesting potential synergies, are being processed. These dossiers include European, Italian and regional regulations, guidelines, technical standards, logistic and economical aspects useful for supporting companies in synergies implementation. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of autoantibodies distinctive of type 1 AIH (AIH‐1) and type 2 AIH (AIH‐2). The aim of this study was to evaluate the autoantibody profile in a cohort of pediatric and adult AIH patients, using both indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and a new multiplexed line‐blot assay. METHODS: Sera from 63 pediatric and 53 adult AIH patients were tested for antinuclear (ANA), antismooth muscle (SMA), anti‐liver kidney microsome 1 (anti‐LKM1), anti‐liver cytosol 1 (anti‐LC1) autoantibodies using IIF methods; for anti‐LKM1, anti‐LC1, and soluble liver antigen/liver‐pancreas (anti‐SLA/LP) autoantibodies using the line‐blot; for anti‐F‐actin autoantibodies using IIF both on VSM47 cell‐line and on rat intestinal epithelial cells. RESULTS: AIH‐1 was the most common type of AIH in the adult cohort (73.6%), while AIH‐2 was the most common AIH in the pediatric cohort (61.9%). Both in adult and pediatric AIH‐2 anti‐LKM1 were the prevalent autoantibodies. In pediatric AIH‐2 anti‐LC1 autoantibodies were more frequent than in adult AIH‐2 (59 vs. 28.6%), and in 35.9% of cases they were present alone. In 17 patients anti‐LC1 autoantibodies were detected only with the line‐blot assay. The levels of anti‐LKM1 and of anti‐LC1 were not different between adult and pediatric AIH, and the overall agreement between the results obtained with the two IIF methods for F‐actin detection was 98.8% (CI 95%: 94.4–99.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The line‐blot assay showed a higher sensitivity than IIF for anti‐LC1 detection. Anti‐LKM1 and anti‐LC1 autoantibody levels are not different in adults and children. An almost perfect agreement between the two IIF methods for anti‐F‐actin detection has been observed.

Abstract

Background: No study has compared allergic sensitization patterns in infants with atopic eczema from different countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the patterns of allergic sensitization in a cohort of infants with atopic eczema participating in a multicentre, international study. Methods: Two thousand one hundred and eighty-four infants (mean age 17.6 months) with atopic eczema from allergic families were screened in 94 centres in 12 countries to participate in a randomized trial for the early prevention of asthma. Clinical history, Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis Index, measurements for total serum IgE and specific IgE antibodies to eight food and inhalant allergens were entered into a database before randomization to treatment. A history of type of feeding in the first weeks of life and exposure to animals was recorded. Results: A total of 52.9% of the infants had raised total IgE, and 55.5% were sensitized to at least one allergen. There was a wide difference in the total IgE values and in the sensitization rates to foods and aeroallergens among infants from different countries. The highest prevalence rates of allergen-sensitized infants were found in Australia (83%), the UK (79%) and Italy (76%). Infants from Belgium and Poland consistently had the lowest sensitization rates. In each country, a characteristic pattern of sensitization was found for aeroallergens (house dust mite > cat > grass pollen > Alternaria), but not for food allergens. Conclusions: In infants with atopic eczema, there is a wide variation in the pattern of allergic sensitization between countries, and data from one country are not necessarily generalizable to other countries.

Abstract

We describe one case of baker's yeast true allergy in a boy with previously diagnosed mite-allergy and atopic dermatitis. At the age of 6, being atopic dermatitis and rhinitis well controlled by drugs, he began to experience generalized urticaria and asthma after eating pizza and bread, but only fresh from the oven. The diagnostic workup revealed single sensitization to baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), and a severe systemic reaction also occurred during the prick-by-prick procedure. After discussing with parents, no special dietary restriction was suggested but the use of autoinjectable adrenaline and on demand salbutamol. A diary of symptoms was recorded by means of a visual-analog scale. During the subsequent 2 years, the severity of symptoms was progressively reduced, and presently urticaria has disappeared. Only cough persists, invariantly after eating just-baked and yeast-containing foods. If bread, pizza and cakes are ate more than one hour after preparation, no symptom occur at all. Baker's yeast is a common component of everyday diet and it usually acts as an allergen only by the inhalatory route. We speculate that the continuous exposure to saccharomyces in foods may have lead to an immunotolerance with a progressive reduction of symptoms, whereas why the allergens is active only in ready-baked foods remains unexplained.
