Abstract

The High Energy Modular Array (HEMA) is one of three instruments that compose the STROBE-X mission concept. The HEMA is a large-area, high-throughput non-imaging pointed instrument based on the Large Area Detector developed as part of the LOFT mission concept. It is designed for spectral timing measurements of a broad range of sources and provides a transformative increase in sensitivity to X-rays in the energy range of 2--30 keV compared to previous instruments, with an effective area of 3.4 m$^{2}$ at 8.5 keV and an energy resolution of better than 300 eV at 6 keV in its nominal field of regard., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We investigate the stellar Mass-Metallicity Relation (MZR) using a sample of 637 quiescent galaxies with 10.4 <= log(M*/M ) < 11.7 selected from the LEGA-C survey at 0.6 <= z <= 1. We derive mass-weighted stellar metallicities using full-spectral fitting. We find that while lower-mass galaxies are both metal -rich and -poor, there are no metal-poor galaxies at high masses, and that metallicity is bounded at low values by a mass-dependent lower limit. This lower limit increases with mass, empirically defining a MEtallicity-Mass Exclusion (MEME) zone. We find that the spectral index MgFe = \sqrt{Mgb \times Fe4383}, a proxy for the stellar metallicity, also shows a mass-dependent lower limit resembling the MEME relation. Crucially, MgFe is independent of stellar population models and fitting methods. By constructing the Metallicity Enrichment Histories, we find that, after the first Gyr, the Star Formation History of galaxies has a mild impact on the observed metallicity distribution. Finally, from the average formation times, we find that galaxies populate differently the metallicity-mass plane at different cosmic times, and that the MEME limit is recovered by galaxies that formed at z >= 3. Our work suggests that the stellar metallicity of quiescent galaxies is bounded by a lower limit which increases with the stellar mass. On the other hand, low-mass galaxies can have metallicities as high as galaxies ~1 dex more massive. This suggests that, at log(M*/M ) >= 10.4, rather than lower-mass galaxies being systematically less metallic, the observed MZR might be a consequence of the lack of massive, metal-poor galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

The Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs), thanks to their large apertures and cutting-edge Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems, promise to deliver sharper and deeper data even than the JWST. SHARP is a concept study for a near-IR (0.95-2.45 $\mu$m) spectrograph conceived to fully exploit the collecting area and the angular resolution of the upcoming generation of ELTs. In particular, SHARP is designed for the 2nd port of MORFEO@ELT. Composed of a Multi-Object Spectrograph, NEXUS, and a multi-Integral Field Unit, VESPER, MORFEO-SHARP will deliver high angular ($\sim$30 mas) and spectral (R$\simeq$300, 2000, 6000, 17000) resolution, outperforming NIRSpec@JWST (100 mas). SHARP will enable studies of the nearby Universe and the early Universe in unprecedented detail. NEXUS is fed by a configurable slit system deploying up to 30 slits with $\sim$2.4 arcsec length and adjustable width, over a field of about 1.2"$\times$1.2" (35 mas/pix). Each slit is fed by an inversion prism able to rotate by an arbitrary angle the field that can be seen by the slit. VESPER is composed of 12 probes of 1.7"$\times$1.5" each (spaxel 31 mas) probing a field 24"$\times$70". SHARP is conceived to exploit the ELTs apertures reaching the faintest flux and the sharpest angular resolution by joining the sensitivity of NEXUS and the high spatial sampling of VESPER to MORFEO capabilities. Abstract

In this paper, we consider the model describing viscous incompressible liquid crystal flows, called the Beris-Edwards model, in the half-space.This model is a coupled system by the Navier-Stokes equations with the evolution equation of the director fields $Q$. The purpose of this paper is to prove that the linearized problem has a unique solution satisfying the maximal $L^p$ -$L^q$ regularity estimates, which is essential for the study of quasi-linear parabolic or parabolic-hyperbolic equations. Our method relies on the $\mathcal R$-boundedness of the solution operator families to the resolvent problem in order to apply operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorems. Abstract

The WHT Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE) is a new, massively multiplexing spectrograph. This new instrument will be exploited to obtain high S/N spectra of $\sim$25000 galaxies at intermediate redshifts for the WEAVE Stellar Population Survey (WEAVE-StePS). We test machine learning methods for retrieving the key physical parameters of galaxies from WEAVE-StePS-like spectra using both photometric and spectroscopic information at various S/Ns and redshifts. We simulated $\sim$105000 galaxy spectra assuming SFH with an exponentially declining star formation rate, covering a wide range of ages, stellar metallicities, sSFRs, and dust extinctions. We then evaluated the ability of the random forest and KNN algorithms to correctly predict such parameters assuming no measurement errors. We checked how much the predictive ability deteriorates for different S/Ns and redshifts, finding that both algorithms still accurately estimate the ages and metallicities with low bias. The dispersion varies from 0.08-0.16 dex for ages and 0.11-0.25 dex for metallicity, depending on the redshift and S/N. For dust attenuation, we find a similarly low bias and dispersion. For the sSFR, we find a very good constraining power for star-forming galaxies, log sSFR$\gtrsim$ -11, where the bias is $\sim$ 0.01 dex and the dispersion is $\sim$ 0.10 dex. For more quiescent galaxies, with log sSFR$\lesssim$ -11, we find a higher bias, 0.61-0.86 dex, and a higher dispersion, $\sim$ 0.4 dex, for different S/Ns and redshifts. Generally, we find that the RF outperforms the KNN. Finally, the retrieved sSFR was used to successfully classify galaxies as part of the blue cloud, green valley, or red sequence. We demonstrate that machine learning algorithms can accurately estimate the physical parameters of simulated galaxies even at relatively low S/N=10 per angstrom spectra with available ancillary photometric information., Comment: 19 pages, 10 + 2 figures, 4 tables, accepted in A&A

Abstract

MHD kink instability can trigger the fragmentation of a twisted magnetic flux tube into small-scale current sheets that dissipate as aperiodic impulsive heating events. This instability propagates as an avalanche to nearby flux tubes and leads to a nanoflare storm. Our previous work was devoted to related 3D MHD numerical modeling with a stratified and realistic atmosphere. This work addresses predictions for the EUV imaging spectroscopy of such structure and evolution of a loop, with an average temperature of 2.5 MK in the solar corona. We set a particular focus on the forthcoming MUSE mission. From the output of the numerical simulations, we synthesized the intensities, Doppler shifts, and non-thermal line broadening in 3 EUV spectral lines in the MUSE passbands: Fe IX 171A, Fe XV 284 A, and Fe XIX 108 A, at 1 MK, 2 MK, and 10 MK, respectively, according to the MUSE expected pixel size, temporal resolution, and temperature response functions. We provide maps showing different view angles and realistic spectra. Finally, we discuss the relevant evolutionary processes from the perspective of possible observations. We find that the MUSE observations might be able to detect the fine structure determined by tube fragmentation. In particular, the Fe IX line is mostly emitted at the loop footpoints, where we track the motions that drive the magnetic stressing and detect the upward motion of evaporating plasma from the chromosphere. In Fe XV, we see the bulk of the loop with increasing intensity. The Fe XIX line is very faint within the chosen simulation parameters; thus, any transient brightening around the loop apex may possibly be emphasized by the folding of sheet-like structure. In conclusion, we show that coronal loop observations with MUSE can pinpoint some crucial features of MHD-modeled ignition processes, such as the related dynamics, helping to identify the heating processes.

7. Boosting projective methods for quantum process and detector tomography

Abstract

We introduce two methods for quantum process and detector tomography. In the quantum process tomography method, we develop an analytical procedure for projecting the linear inversion estimation of a quantum channel onto the set of completely positive trace-preserving matrices. By integrating this method with alternate projection techniques, we achieve a three-order-of-magnitude improvement in approximating the closest quantum channel to an arbitrary Hermitian matrix compared to existing methods without compromising computational efficiency. Our second method extends this approach to quantum detector tomography, demonstrating superior efficiency compared to current techniques. Through numerical simulations, we evaluate our protocols across channels of up to four qubits in quantum process tomography and systems of up to six qubits in quantum detector tomography, showcasing superior precision and efficiency.

Abstract

Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) bridge relativistic astrophysics and multi-messenger astronomy. Space-based gamma/X-ray wide field detectors have proven essential to detect and localize the highly variable GRB prompt emission, which is also a counterpart of gravitational wave events. We study the capabilities to detect long and short GRBs by the High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) Pathfinder (HP) and SpIRIT, namely a swarm of six 3U CubeSats to be launched in early 2025, and a 6U CubeSat launched on December 1st 2023. We also study the capabilities of two advanced configurations of swarms of >8 satellites with improved detector performances (HERMES Constellations). The HERMES detectors, sensitive down to ~2-3 keV, will be able to detect faint/soft GRBs which comprise X-ray flashes and high redshift bursts. By combining state-of-the-art long and short GRB population models with a description of the single module performance, we estimate that HP will detect ~195^{+22}_{-21} long GRBs (3.4^{+0.3}_{-0.8} at redshift z>6) and ~19^{+5}_{-3} short GRBs per year. The larger HERMES Constellations under study can detect between ~1300 and ~3000 long GRBs per year and between ~160 and ~400 short GRBs per year, depending on the chosen configuration, with a rate of long GRBs above z>6 between 30 and 75 per year. Finally, we explore the capabilities of HERMES to detect short GRBs as electromagnetic counterparts of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers detected as gravitational signals by current and future ground-based interferometers. Under the assumption that the GRB jets are structured, we estimate that HP can provide up to 1 (14) yr^{-1} joint detections during the fifth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run (Einstein Telescope single triangle 10 km arm configuration). Abstract

Most of the observed galaxies cannot be resolved into individual stars and are studied through their integrated spectrum using simple stellar populations (SSPs) models, with stellar libraries being a key ingredient in building them. Spectroscopic observations are increasingly being directed towards the near-infrared (NIR), where much is yet to be explored. SSPs in the NIR are still limited, and there are inconsistencies between different sets of models. One of the ways to minimize this problem is to have reliable NIR stellar libraries. The main goal of this work is to present SMARTY (mileS Moderate resolution neAr-infRared sTellar librarY) a ~0.9-2.4$\mu$m stellar spectral library composed of 31 stars observed with the Gemini Near-IR Spectrograph (GNIRS) at the 8.1m Gemini North telescope and make it available to the community. The stars were chosen from the SMARTY library, for which the atmospheric parameters are reliable (and well tested), to populate different regions of the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. Furthermore, five of these stars have NIR spectra available that we use to assess the quality of SMARTY. The remaining 26 stars are presented for the first time in the NIR. We compared the observed SMARTY spectra with synthetic and interpolated spectra, finding a mean difference of ~20% in the equivalent widths and ~1% in the overall continuum shape in both sets of comparisons. We computed the spectrophotometric broadband magnitudes and colours and compared them with the 2MASS ones, resulting in mean differences up to 0.07 and 0.10mag in magnitudes and colours, respectively. In general, a small difference was noted between the SMARTY spectra corrected using the continuum from the interpolated and the theoretical stars.

10. CO radial gradients in the bulge of M31

Abstract

We present new H- and K-band spectroscopy for the bulge of M31, taken with the LUCI spectrograph at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We studied radial trends of CO absorption features (namely, CO1.58, CO1.60, CO1.64, CO1.66, CO1.68, CO2.30, CO2.32, CO2.35) in the bulge of M31, out to a galactocentric distance of 100'' (380pc). We find that most COs do not exhibit a strong radial gradient, despite the strong metallicity gradient inferred from the optical spectral range, except for CO1.64, showing a steep increase in the center. We compared the observed line strengths to predictions of different state-of-the-art stellar population models, including an updated version of EMILES models, which also uses the extended IRTF spectral library. The observed COs are close to models' predictions, but in some models they turn out to be underestimated. We find that the lack of radial gradients is due to the combination of increasing CO strength with metallicity and C abundance, and decreasing CO strength with IMF slope and O abundance. We speculate that the steep gradient of CO1.64 might be due to Na overabundance. Remarkably, we were able to fit, at the same time, optical indices and all the NIR COs except for CO1.68, leaving abundance ratios (i.e., [C/Fe], [O/Fe], and [Mg/Fe]) as free-fitting parameters, imposing age and metallicity constraints from the optical, with no significant contribution from intermediate-age populations. For the majority of the bulge, we find [Mg/Fe]~0.15dex, [O/Fe] larger than [Mg/Fe] (by ~0.1dex), and C abundance consistent with that of Mg. In the central (few arcsec) region, we still find an enhancement of O and Mg, but significantly lower [C/Fe]. We find that the COs' line strengths of the bulge are significantly lower than those of massive galaxies, possibly because of a difference in carbon abundance, as well as, to some extent, total metallicity., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

Abstract

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract

Background: Proximal Junctional Failure (PJF) is a post-operative complication in adult spine surgery, often requiring reoperation. Osteotomy is often used in revision surgeries, leading to 34.8% complications. Hence, suboptimal decisions might be extending hardware without osteotomy, which yields to severe Global Alignment and Proportion (GAP) scores. High GAPs increase PJF risk, but Hardware Density Reduction (HDR) might limit it. Methods: Two clinical cases were evaluated: 1) Initially operated with hardware extended to T10, GAP 10; 2) PJF at T11 and hardware extended to T3, GAP 11. Two patient-personalized spine FE models were constructed through Statistical Shape Modelling (SSM) and mesh morphing. Intervertebral Disk (IVD) fiber strain, screw pull-out force, and rod stress were evaluated for the cases 1) and 2), also for 91 virtual HDR scenarios with different GAP scores, using Finite Element (FE) simulations. Different rod and bone material properties were also assessed. Results: HDR could decrease IVD fiber strain (-70% at most) and increase screw pull-out forces (+142% at most) for cases with Ti rod and normal bone. Cr-Co rod and osteopenia, and osteoporotic bones had high PJF risk. Trade-off analyses could determine the best configurations avoiding PJF. Virtual cohort study showed that GAP 12 and 13 could not avoid PJF in any HDR scenarios either with Ti or Cr-Co rods. HDR in a UIV T10 virtual patient with GAP 11 could not de-risk in case of Cr-Co rods. UIV T3 with GAP 13 could not benefit any HDR strategy, independently of rod properties. In contrast, Ti rods might allow HDR to de-risk GAP 12 patients with UIV T3. Conclusions: HDR could avoid PJF in the patients with medium high GAP scores, depending on the screw reduction pattern, and bone and rod material properties. Remarkably, HDR technique might avoid excessive spine surgeries and minimize the surgery cost.

Abstract

The RADiCAL Collaboration is conducting R\&D on high performance electromagnetic (EM) calorimetry to address the challenges expected in future collider experiments under conditions of high luminosity and/or high irradiation (FCC-ee, FCC-hh and fixed target and forward physics environments). Under development is a sampling calorimeter approach, known as RADiCAL modules, based on scintillation and wavelength-shifting (WLS) technologies and photosensor, including SiPM and SiPM-like technology. The modules discussed herein consist of alternating layers of very dense (W) absorber and scintillating crystal (LYSO:Ce) plates, assembled to a depth of 25 $X_0$. The scintillation signals produced by the EM showers in the region of EM shower maximum (shower max) are transmitted to SiPM located at the upstream and downstream ends of the modules via quartz capillaries which penetrate the full length of the module. The capillaries contain DSB1 organic plastic WLS filaments positioned within the region of shower max, where the shower energy deposition is greatest, and fused with quartz rod elsewhere. The wavelength shifted light from this spatially-localized shower max region is then propagated to the photosensors. This paper presents the results of an initial measurement of the time resolution of a RADiCAL module over the energy range 25 GeV $\leq$ E $\leq$ 150 GeV using the H2 electron beam at CERN. The data indicate an energy dependence of the time resolution that follows the functional form: $\sigma_{t} = a/\sqrt{E} \oplus b$, where a = 256 $\sqrt{GeV}$~ps and b = 17.5 ps. The time resolution measured at the highest electron beam energy for which data was currently recorded (150 GeV) was found to be $\sigma_{t}$ = 27 ps.

Abstract

In our previous work, we derive the CR-IGIMF: a new scenario for a variable stellar initial mass function (IMF), which combines numerical results on the role played by cosmic rays in setting the thermal state of star forming gas, with the analytical approach of the integrated galaxy-wide IMF. In this work, we study the implications of this scenario for the properties of local Early-Type galaxies (ETG), as inferred from dynamical, photometric and spectroscopic studies. We implement a library of CR-IGIMF shapes in the framework of the Galaxy Evolution and Assembly (GAEA) model. Our realization includes a derivation of synthetic spectral energy distribution for each model galaxy, allowing a direct derivation of the mass fraction in the mean IMF of low-mass stars (i.e. the dwarf-to-giant ratio - $\rm f_{dg}$) and a comparison with IMF sensitive spectral features. The predictions of the GAEA model implementing the CR-IGIMF confirm our previous findings: it correctly reproduces both the observed excess of z$\sim$0 dynamical mass (mass-to-light ratios) with respect to spectroscopic (photometric) estimates assuming a universal, MW-like, IMF, and the observed increase of [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios with stellar mass in spheroidal galaxies. Moreover, this realization reproduces the increasing trends of $\rm f_{dg}$, and IMF-sensitive line-strengths with velocity dispersion, although the predicted relations are significantly shallower than the observed ones. Our results show that the CR-IGIMF is a promising scenario that reproduces at the same time dynamical, photometric and spectroscopic indications of a varying IMF in local ETGs. The shallow relations found for spectral indices suggest that either a stronger variability as a function of galaxy properties or additional dependences (e.g. as a function of star forming gas metallicity) might be required to match the strength of the observed trends., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, A&A accepted

Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. 25. Finding dense sub-lattices as low-energy states of a Hamiltonian

Abstract

Lattice-based cryptography has emerged as one of the most prominent candidates for post-quantum cryptography, projected to be secure against the imminent threat of large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. The Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) is to find the shortest non-zero vector in a given lattice. It is fundamental to lattice-based cryptography and believed to be hard even for quantum computers. We study a natural generalization of the SVP known as the $K$-Densest Sub-lattice Problem ($K$-DSP): to find the densest $K$-dimensional sub-lattice of a given lattice. We formulate $K$-DSP as finding the first excited state of a Z-basis Hamiltonian, making $K$-DSP amenable to investigation via an array of quantum algorithms, including Grover search, quantum Gibbs sampling, adiabatic, and Variational Quantum Algorithms. The complexity of the algorithms depends on the basis through which the input lattice is presented. We present a classical polynomial-time algorithm that takes an arbitrary input basis and preprocesses it into inputs suited to quantum algorithms. With preprocessing, we prove that $O(KN^2)$ qubits suffice for solving $K$-DSP for $N$ dimensional input lattices. We empirically demonstrate the performance of a Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm $K$-DSP solver for low dimensions, highlighting the influence of a good preprocessed input basis. We then discuss the hardness of $K$-DSP in relation to the SVP, to see if there is reason to build post-quantum cryptography on $K$-DSP. We devise a quantum algorithm that solves $K$-DSP with run-time exponent $(5KN\log{N})/2$. Therefore, for fixed $K$, $K$-DSP is no more than polynomially harder than the SVP.

Abstract

This paper presents the third data release of the INvestigating Stellar Population In RElics (INSPIRE) project, comprising 52 ultra-compact massive galaxies (UCMGs) observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph. We measure integrated stellar velocity dispersion, [Mg/Fe] abundances, ages, and metallicities for all the INSPIRE objects. We thus infer star formation histories and confirm the existence of a degree of relicness (DoR), defined in terms of the fraction of stellar mass formed by $z=2$, the time at which a galaxy has assembled 75\% of its mass, and the final assembly time. Objects with a high DoR assembled their stellar mass at early epochs, while low-DoR objects show a non-negligible fraction of later-formed populations and hence a spread in ages and metallicities. A higher DoR correlates with larger [Mg/Fe], super-solar metallicity, and larger velocity dispersion values. The 52 UMCGs span a large range of DoR from 0.83 to 0.06, with 38 of them having formed more than 75\% of their mass by $z=2$. Of these, nine are extreme relics (DoR$>0.7$), since they formed the totality ($>99\%$) of their stellar mass by redshift $z=2$. The remaining 14 UCMGs cannot be considered relics, as they are characterised by more extended star formation histories. With INSPIRE, we built the first sizeable sample of relics outside the local Universe, up to $z\sim0.4$, increasing the number of confirmed relics by a factor of $>10$, and opening up an important window to explain the mass assembly of massive galaxies in the high-z Universe., Comment: accepted for publication on MNRAS, 20 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. 28. Using Flipped Classroom Modules to Facilitate Higher Order Learning in Undergraduate Organic Chemistry.

Abstract

In an ongoing effort to incorporate active learning and promote higher order learning outcomes in undergraduate organic chemistry, a hybrid (flipped) classroom structure has been used to facilitate a series of collaborative activities in the first two courses of the lower division organic chemistry sequence. An observational study of seven classes over a five-year period reveals there is a strong correlation between performance on the in-class activities and performance on the final exam across all classes; however, a significant number of students in these courses continue to struggle on both the in-class activities and final exam. The Activity Engagement Survey (AcES) was administered in the most recent course offering included in this study, and these preliminary data suggest that students who achieved lower scores on the in-class activities had lower levels of emotional and behavioral/cognitive engagement and were less likely to work in collaborative groups. In total, these findings suggest that if students can be guided to engage more successfully with the in-class activities, they are likely to be more successful in carrying out the higher order learning required on the final exam. In addition to the analyses of student performance and engagement in the in-class activities, the implementation of the flipped classroom structure and suggestions for how student engagement in higher order learning might be improved in future iterations of the class are described herein.

Abstract

microbeMASST, a taxonomically informed mass spectrometry (MS) search tool, tackles limited microbial metabolite annotation in untargeted metabolomics experiments. Leveraging a curated database of >60,000 microbial monocultures, users can search known and unknown MS/MS spectra and link them to their respective microbial producers via MS/MS fragmentation patterns. Identification of microbe-derived metabolites and relative producers without a priori knowledge will vastly enhance the understanding of microorganisms' role in ecology and human health.

Abstract

Correlations in azimuthal angle extending over a long range in pseudorapidity between particles, usually called the “ridge” phenomenon, were discovered in heavy-ion collisions, and later found in pp and p–Pb collisions. In large systems, they are thought to arise from the expansion (collective flow) of the produced particles. Extending these measurements over a wider range in pseudorapidity and final-state particle multiplicity is important to understand better the origin of these long-range correlations in small collision systems. In this Letter, measurements of the long-range correlations in p–Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV are extended to a pseudorapidity gap of ∆η ~ 8 between particles using the ALICE forward multiplicity detectors. After suppressing non-flow correlations, e.g., from jet and resonance decays, the ridge structure is observed to persist up to a very large gap of ∆η ~ 8 for the first time in p–Pb collisions. This shows that the collective flow-like correlations extend over an extensive pseudorapidity range also in small collision systems such as p–Pb collisions. The pseudorapidity dependence of the second-order anisotropic flow coefficient, v2(η), is extracted from the long-range correlations. The v2(η) results are presented for a wide pseudorapidity range of –3.1 < η < 4.8 in various centrality classes in p–Pb collisions. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the source of anisotropic flow in small collision systems, the v2(η) measurements are compared with hydrodynamic and transport model calculations. The comparison suggests that the final-state interactions play a dominant role in developing the anisotropic flow in small collision systems.

Abstract

Long- and short-range correlations for pairs of charged particles are studied via two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV and p–Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV. The correlation functions are measured as a function of relative azimuthal angle ∆φ and pseudorapidity separation ∆η for pairs of primary charged particles within the pseudorapidity interval |η| < 0.9 and the transverse-momentum interval 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c. Flow coefficients are extracted for the long-range correlations (1.6 < |∆η| < 1.8) in various high-multiplicity event classes using the low-multiplicity template fit method. The method is used to subtract the enhanced yield of away-side jet fragments in high-multiplicity events. These results show decreasing flow signals toward lower multiplicity events. Furthermore, the flow coefficients for events with hard probes, such as jets or leading particles, do not exhibit any significant changes compared to those obtained from high-multiplicity events without any specific event selection criteria. The results are compared with hydrodynamic-model calculations, and it is found that a better understanding of the initial conditions is necessary to describe the results, particularly for low-multiplicity events.

Abstract

Abstract Childhood adversity is associated with various clinical dimensions in psychosis; however, how genetic vulnerability shapes the adversity-associated psychopathological signature is yet to be studied. We studied data of 583 First Episode Psychosis (FEP) cases from the EU-GEI FEP case-control study, including Polygenic risk scores for major depressive disorder (MDD-PRS), bipolar disorder (BD-PRS) and schizophrenia (SZ-PRS); childhood adversity measured with the total score of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ); and positive, negative, depressive and manic psychopathological domains from a factor model of transdiagnostic dimensions. Genes and environment interactions were explored as a departure from a multiplicative effect of PRSs and total CTQ on each dimension. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, 10 PCA, site of recruitment and for medication. A childhood adversity and PRS multiplicative interaction was observed between A) the CTQ and MDD-PRS on the predominance of positive (β = 0.42, 95% CI = [0.155, 0.682], p = 0.004); and depressive (β = 0.33, 95% CI = [0.071, 0.591], p = 0.013) dimensions; B) between the CTQ and BD-PRS on the positive dimension (β = 0.45, 95% CI = [0.106, 0.798], p = 0.010), and C) with the CTQ and SZ-PRS on the positive dimension (β = −0.34, 95% CI = [−0.660, −0.015], p = 0.040). Bonferroni corrected p-value of significance was set at 0.0125. In conclusion, despite being underpowered, this study suggests that genetic liability for MDD and BD may have a moderating effect on the sensibility of childhood adversity on depressive and positive psychotic dimensions. This supports the hypothesis of an affective pathway to psychosis in those exposed to childhood adversity.

Abstract

Abstract A novel synthetic pathway for synthesizing isocyanate-free polyurethanes is reported here. β-Amino alcohols were efficiently synthesized from the aminolysis of the epoxide ring of (R)-(+)-limonene oxide with different primary amines as nucleophiles and hot water as catalysts. The regio- and diastereoselectivities of the reactions were investigated and supported by computational studies. DFT calculations were performed to understand the experimental results more deeply. It confirmed the crucial roles of water molecules and the nature of the nucleophile in forming the products. The formation of the product is entirely driven by the free energy of activation that affects the reaction rate. Cyclic carbamates were prepared from β-amino alcohols using the dialkyl carbonate (DAC) chemistry. An oligourethane was obtained from Anionic Ring-Opening Polymerization (AROP) of a cyclic carbamate derived from (R)-(+)-limonene-oxide. All the products were characterized by employing 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The assignments of the signals in 1H and 13C NMR spectra were also supported by 2D NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract

Abstract Reproducibility of computational research is often challenging despite established guidelines and best practices. Translating these guidelines into practical applications remains difficult. Here, we present ENCORE, an approach to enhance transparency and reproducibility by guiding researchers in how to structure and document a computational project. ENCORE builds on previous efforts in computational reproducibility and integrates all project components into a standardized file system structure. It utilizes pre-defined files as documentation templates, leverages GitHub for software versioning, and includes an HTML-based navigator. ENCORE is designed to be agnostic to the type of computational project, data, programming language, and ICT infrastructure, and does not rely on specific software tools. We also share our group’s experience using ENCORE, highlighting that the most significant challenge to the routine adoption of approaches like ours is the lack of incentives to motivate researchers to dedicate sufficient time and effort to ensure reproducibility.

Abstract

Abstract The angular correlations between charged Ξ baryons and associated identified hadrons (pions, kaons, protons, Λ baryons, and Ξ baryons) are measured in pp collisions at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector to give insight into the particle production mechanisms and balancing of quantum numbers on the microscopic level. In particular, the distribution of strangeness is investigated in the correlations between the doubly-strange Ξ baryon and mesons and baryons that contain a single strange quark, K and Λ. As a reference, the results are compared to Ξπ and Ξp correlations, where the associated mesons and baryons do not contain a strange valence quark. These measurements are expected to be sensitive to whether strangeness is produced through string breaking or in a thermal production scenario. Furthermore, the multiplicity dependence of the correlation functions is measured to look for the turn-on of additional particle production mechanisms with event activity. The results are compared to predictions from the string-breaking model Pythia 8, including tunes with baryon junctions and rope hadronisation enabled, the cluster hadronisation model Herwig 7, and the core-corona model Epos-lhc. While some aspects of the experimental data are described quantitatively or qualitatively by the Monte Carlo models, no model can match all features of the data. These results provide stringent constraints on the strangeness and baryon number production mechanisms in pp collisions.

38. Investigating Evidence in Support of Validity and Reliability for Data Collected with the Meaningful Learning in the Laboratory Instrument (MLLI)

Abstract

The Meaningful Learning in the Laboratory Instrument (MLLI) was designed to measure students' expectations before and after their laboratory courses and experiences. Although the MLLI has been used in various studies and laboratory environments to investigate students' cognitive and affective laboratory expectations, the authors of the instrument reported a discrepancy between the intended factor structure of the MLLI and the factor structure suggested by the data collected in preliminary studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability evidence related to data collected with the MLLI, especially that related to structural validity. Evidence to support structural validity would provide greater meaning for the reporting and interpretation of MLLI scores. In this study, two possible "a priori" models for the factor structure of data collected from multiple institutions with the MLLI were investigated using confirmatory factory analysis (CFA). This initial investigation found poor data-model fit for each of the two tested models. Cognitive interviews and free response items were then used to inform modifications to the two "a priori structures," and a third alternative structure, which included a negative method factor, was also investigated. Once a best fitting model was identified, further model revisions were informed by a combination of modification indices and qualitative data. Evidence of adequate-to-good data model fit was found for the final revised version of the MLLI, deemed the MLLIv2. Additionally, evidence of both internal structure validity and single administration reliability were found for each of the MLLIv2 factors. The structure of the data from these items leads to scale scores that likely represent student expectations that contribute to meaningful learning and student expectations that detract from meaningful learning. As the results of this study provide the first psychometrically supported scales for MLLI data, they have implications on the future reporting and analyses of MLLI scores.

39. Factors Affecting Individuals' Cognitive Engagement during Group Work in General Chemistry: Timing, Group Size, and Question Type

Abstract

Understanding how individual students cognitively engage while participating in small group activities in a General Chemistry class can provide insight into what factors may be influencing their level of engagement. The Interactive-Constructive-Active-Passive (ICAP) framework was used to identify individual students' level of engagement on items in multiple activities during a General Chemistry course. The effects of timing, group size, and question type on engagement were investigated. Results indicate students' engagement varied more in the first half of the term, and students demonstrated higher levels of engagement when working in smaller groups or subsets of larger groups when these groups contained students with similar levels of knowledge. Finally, the relation between question type (algorithmic "versus" explanation) and engagement depended on the activity topic. In an activity on Solutions and Dilutions, there was a significant relation where algorithmic items had higher occurrences of Interactive engagement. The implications of this work regarding teaching and research are discussed.

40. On the accretion of a new group of galaxies onto Virgo: III. The stellar population radial gradients of dEs

Abstract

Using MUSE data, we investigate the radial gradients of stellar population properties (namely age, [M/H], and the abundance ratio of $\alpha$ elements [$\alpha$/Fe]) for a sample of nine dwarf early-type (dE) galaxies with log(M$_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$) $\sim$ 9.0 and an infall time onto the Virgo cluster of 2-3Gyr ago. We followed a similar approach as in Bidaran et al. (2022) to derive their stellar population properties and star formation histories (SFHs) through fitting observed spectral indices and full spectral fitting, respectively. We find that these nine dE galaxies have truncated [Mg/Fe]vs.[Fe/H] profiles than equally-massive Virgo dE galaxies with longer past infall times. Short profiles of three dE galaxies are the result of their intense star formation which has been quenched long before their accretion onto the Virgo cluster, possibly as a result of their group environment. In the remaining six dE galaxies, profiles mainly trace a recent episode of star burst within 0.4R$_{\rm e}$ which results in higher light-weighted [$\alpha$/Fe] values. The latter SFH peak can be due to ram pressure exerted by the Virgo cluster at the time of the accretion of the dE galaxies. Also, we show that younger, more metal-rich and less $\alpha$-enhanced stellar populations dominate their inner regions (i.e., < 0.4R$_{\rm e}$) resulting in mainly flat $\nabla_{\rm age}$, negative $\nabla_{\rm [M/H]}$ and positive $\nabla_{\rm [\alpha/Fe]}$. We find that with increasing log($\sigma_{\rm Re}$) of dE galaxies, $\nabla_{\rm age}$ and $\nabla_{\rm [\alpha/Fe]}$ flatten, and the latter correlation persists even after including early-type galaxies up to log($\sigma_{\rm Re}$ $\sim$ 2.5), possibly due to the more extended star formation activity in the inner regions of dEs, as opposed to more massive early-type galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We measure the [${\alpha}$/Fe] abundances for 183 quiescent galaxies at z = 0.60 - 0.75 with stellar masses ranging 10.4 \leq log10 10.4 $\leq$ log10 (M$_*$ /M$_\odot$) $\leq$ 11.6 selected from the LEGA-C survey. We estimate [${\alpha}$/Fe] from the ratio of the spectral indices Mgb (${\lambda} \sim 5177$ {\AA}) and Fe4383, compared to predictions of simple stellar population models. We find that 91% of quiescents in our sample have supersolar [${\alpha}$/Fe], with an average value of [${\alpha}$/Fe] = +0.24 $\pm$ 0.01. We find no significant correlation between [${\alpha}$/Fe] and stellar metallicity, mass, velocity dispersion, and average formation time. Galaxies that formed the bulk of their stellar mass on time scales shorter than 1 Gyr follow the same [${\alpha}$/Fe] distribution as those which formed on longer time scales. In comparison to local early-type galaxies and to stacked spectra of quiescent galaxies at z = 0.38 and z = 0.07, we find that the average [${\alpha}$/Fe] has not changed between z = 0.75 and the present time. Our work shows that the vast majority of massive quiescent galaxies at z $\sim$ 0.7 are ${\alpha}$-enhanced, and that no detectable evolution of the average [${\alpha}$/Fe] has taken place over the last $\sim$ 6.5 Gyr., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, 1 appendix

Abstract

The upcoming generation of optical spectrographs on four meter-class telescopes, with their huge multiplexing capabilities, excellent spectral resolution, and unprecedented wavelength coverage, will provide high-quality spectra for thousands of galaxies. These data will allow us to examine of the stellar population properties at intermediate redshift, an epoch that remains unexplored by large and deep surveys. We assess our capability to retrieve the mean stellar metallicity in galaxies at different redshifts and S/N, while simultaneously exploiting the UV and optical rest-frame wavelength coverage. The work is based on a comprehensive library of spectral templates of stellar populations, covering a wide range of age and metallicity values and built assuming various SFHs. We simulated realistic observations of a large sample of galaxies carried out with WEAVE at the WHT at different redshifts and S/N values. We measured all the reliable indices on the simulated spectra and on the comparison library. We then adopted a Bayesian approach to obtain the probability distribution of stellar metallicity. The analysis of the spectral indices has shown how some mid-UV indices can provide reliable constraints on stellar metallicity, along with optical indicators. The analysis of the mock observations has shown that even at S/N=10, the metallicity can be derived within 0.3 dex, in particular, for stellar populations older than 2 Gyr. Our results are in good agreement with other theoretical and observational works in the literature and show how the UV indicators can be advantageous in constraining metallicities. This is very promising for the upcoming surveys carried out with new, highly multiplexed, large-field spectrographs, such as StePS at the WEAVE and 4MOST, which will provide spectra of thousands of galaxies covering large spectral ranges at relatively high S/N., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson. The measurement is made in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, in the low jet transverse-momentum interval of 15≤p_{T}^{jet ch}

Abstract

The correlations between different moments of two flow amplitudes, extracted with the recently developed asymmetric cumulants, are measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV recorded by the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The magnitudes of the measured observables show a dependence on the different moments as well as on the collision centrality, indicating the presence of nonlinear response in all even moments up to the eighth. Furthermore, the higher-order asymmetric cumulants show different signatures than the symmetric and lower-order asymmetric cumulants. Comparisons with state-of-the-art event generators using two different parametrizations obtained from Bayesian optimization show differences between data and simulations in many of the studied observables, indicating a need for further tuning of the models behind those event generators. These results provide new and independent constraints on the initial conditions and transport properties of the system created in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract

The first experimental information on the strong interaction between Λ and Ξ− strange baryons is presented in this Letter. The correlation function of Λ–Ξ− and Λ‾–Ξ‾+ pairs produced in high-multiplicity proton–proton (pp) collisions at s=13 TeV at the LHC is measured as a function of the relative momentum of the pair. The femtoscopy method is used to calculate the correlation function, which is then compared with theoretical expectations obtained using a meson exchange model, chiral effective field theory, and Lattice QCD calculations close to the physical point. Data support predictions of small scattering parameters while discarding versions with large ones, thus suggesting a weak Λ–Ξ− interaction. The limited statistical significance of the data does not yet allow one to constrain the effects of coupled channels like Σ–Ξ and N–Ω.

Abstract

Fluctuation measurements are important sources of information on the mechanism of particle production at LHC energies. This article reports the first experimental results on third-order cumulants of the net-proton distributions in Pb–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sNN=5.02 TeV recorded by the ALICE detector. The results on the second-order cumulants of net-proton distributions at sNN=2.76 and 5.02 TeV are also discussed in view of effects due to the global and local baryon number conservation. The results demonstrate the presence of long-range rapidity correlations between protons and antiprotons. Such correlations originate from the early phase of the collision. The experimental results are compared with HIJING and EPOS model calculations, and the dependence of the fluctuation measurements on the phase-space coverage is examined in the context of lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) and hadron resonance gas (HRG) model estimations. The measured third-order cumulants are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties of about 4% and are described well by LQCD and HRG predictions.

ABSTRACTIntroduction Influenza causes significant morbidity and mortality, but influenza vaccine uptake remains below most countries’ targets. Vaccine policy recommendations vary, as do procedures for reviewing and appraising the evidence.Areas Covered During a series of roundtable discussions, we reviewed procedures and methodologies used by health ministries in four European countries to inform vaccine recommendations. We review the type of evidence currently recommended by each health ministry and the range of approaches toward considering randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and real-world evidence (RWE) studies when setting influenza vaccine recommendations.Expert Opinion Influenza vaccine recommendations should be based on data from both RCTs and RWE studies of efficacy, effectiveness, and safety. Such data should be considered alongside health-economic, cost-effectiveness, and budgetary factors. Although RCT data are more robust and less prone to bias, well-designed RWE studies permit timely evaluation of vaccine benefits, effectiveness comparisons over multiple seasons in large populations, and detection of rare adverse events, under real-world conditions. Given the variability of vaccine effectiveness due to influenza virus mutations and increasing diversification of influenza vaccines, we argue that consideration of both RWE and RCT evidence is the best approach to more nuanced and timely updates of influenza vaccine recommendations.
