Abstract

Using a mixed-methods approach, we examined how participants' memories of socialization regarding death might influence their self-reported coping with losses in childhood and adulthood. We recruited 318 adults to complete an online survey. Path analyses indicated that participants who remembered their parents shielding them less from issues related to death reported better coping as children and adults. Qualitative responses suggested participants wanted to receive more information about death from their parents as they went through the grieving process. We highlight the potential benefits of socializing children about death, and how it may aid in their coping with death-related events. 4. Physical Constraint Embedded Neural Networks for inference and noise regulation

Abstract

Neural networks often require large amounts of data to generalize and can be ill-suited for modeling small and noisy experimental datasets. Standard network architectures trained on scarce and noisy data will return predictions that violate the underlying physics. In this paper, we present methods for embedding even--odd symmetries and conservation laws in neural networks and propose novel extensions and use cases for physical constraint embedded neural networks. We design an even--odd decomposition architecture for disentangling a neural network parameterized function into its even and odd components and demonstrate that it can accurately infer symmetries without prior knowledge. We highlight the noise resilient properties of physical constraint embedded neural networks and demonstrate their utility as physics-informed noise regulators. Here we employed a conservation of energy constraint embedded network as a physics-informed noise regulator for a symbolic regression task. We showed that our approach returns a symbolic representation of the neural network parameterized function that aligns well with the underlying physics while outperforming a baseline symbolic regression approach., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Given an unknown dynamic system such as a coupled harmonic oscillator with $n$ springs and point masses. We are often interested in gaining insights into its physical parameters, i.e. stiffnesses and masses, by observing trajectories of motion. How do we achieve this from video frames or time-series data and without the knowledge of the dynamics model? We present a neural framework for estimating physical parameters in a manner consistent with the underlying physics. The neural framework uses a deep latent variable model to disentangle the system physical parameters from canonical coordinate observations. It then returns a Hamiltonian parameterization that generalizes well with respect to the discovered physical parameters. We tested our framework with simple harmonic oscillators, $n=1$, and noisy observations and show that it discovers the underlying system parameters and generalizes well with respect to these discovered parameters. Our model also extrapolates the dynamics of the system beyond the training interval and outperforms a non-physically constrained baseline model. Teradata, which offers software, hardware, and consulting centered around enterprise database management, is chosen. Commercial due diligence is performed. Historical financials are used for benchmarking. A business plan, financing structures, exit strategies, and due diligence topics are evaluated. The firm performs well as an LBO investment due to software’s high cash flow margins and strong market growth. Teradata’s established customer base and high margin products are its strengths as an LBO target.

Abstract

Determining what will occur with a consulting practice becomes a more pressing concern as an evaluator approaches the age of retirement. Typically independent consultants do not have the pension planning services readily available to evaluators in academic settings, governmental agencies, or large corporations. Without prompts such as automatic pay deductions that are available from human resource departments in larger organizations, evaluation entrepreneurs easily become financially at risk by not giving proper attention to building personal wealth soon enough or well enough. Even with an adequate retirement account, independent consultants may not realize that the service business that they worked hard to establish could put a very golden finish on a preexisting retirement nest egg. Much has been written about succession planning and about the valuation and sale of service businesses. This chapter provides a road map of changes that evaluators may want to make to their business in order to garner the best price when the day comes to sell, work part time, or have the company run without much of the owner's time or resources. The aspects of selling an evaluation business that are important to a prospective buyer are also outlined.

Abstract

Lake Ontario is the primary source of drinking water for approximately half the population of Ontario. A proof of concept, Lake Ontario Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Forecasting System (LOWQFS) has been completed. It provides information on real-time dynamic water quality conditions and forecasting of future conditions to local municipalities (i) to respond to contaminant spills in the lake or watersheds which could reach treatment plant intakes, (ii) assess the potential impacts of new infrastructure, (iii) implement Emergency Response exercises, and (iv) assist with adapting to climate change. The LOWQFS is a significant Source Water Protection element. It represents a significant land-to-lake tool for water quality management of contaminant spills and is founded in a governance structure between Regions of Peel, Durham, and the City of Toronto, supported by Ontario and Canada. This paper discusses the development of the LOWQFS, including its data sources. The LOWQFS is a decision support system (DSS) on a web-based platform using the MIKE 3 hydrodynamic and water quality computer code. Model calibration validation exercises are summarized. The LOWQFS needs real time data from a variety of sources, including new meteorological forecasts available every 6 hours from governmant sources, year round installations of current meters, and real time monitoring of water quality(temperature, conductivity) and flow rates from influent tributaries to Lake Ontario to support the simulation of their influent plumes into the Lake Ontario Coastal Zone. Abstract

Patients with distal ulcerative colitis may be refractory to standard drug therapy. 5-Aminosalicylate, the active moiety of sulfasalazine, is effective topically in new onset distal colitis. Six patients with distal colitis unresponsive to sulfasalazine and corticosteroids bad a prompt and dramatic response to the administration of 5-aminosalicylate enemas with clinical, sigmoidoscopic, and histological improvement. Topical 5-aminosalicylate should be a useful addition to the current available therapies for some patients with refractory distal ulcerative colitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
