The development of easy and direct real-time monitoring of welded joint quality instead of surface damage analysis is crucial to improve the quality of industrial products. This work presents the results of high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-based composites with various carbon black (CB) content (from 20 to 30 vol.%) for use as a heating element and strain sensor in electrofusion-welded polymer joints. The pyroresistive heating process was used to determine the effect of generated Joule heat during welding on the structure and sensor properties of polymer–carbon composites. It is shown that the generation of Joule heat depends on the nanocarbon content and affects the crystallinity of the polymer matrix. The partial disruption of the conductive path of carbon black particles was observed and, as a result, a decrease in electrical conductivity for composites with lower CB content after welding was found. For the highest CB amount, conductivity increased, which is caused by smaller particle-to-particle distance for filler paths. Therefore, the best balance between pyroresistive and sensor properties was found.

Nanomedicine is a discipline of medicine that applies all aspects of nanotechnology strategies and concepts for treatment and screening possibilities. Synthetic polymer nanostructures are among the many nanomedicine formulations frequently studied for their potential as vectors. Bioimaging is a valuable diagnostic tool, thus, there is always a demand for new excipients/nanocarriers. In this study, hydrophobic hyperbranched poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) homopolymers comprised of highly hydrophobic LMA moieties with –COOH polar end groups were synthesized by employing reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was utilized as the branching agent. End groups are incorporated through the RAFT agent utilized. The resulting amphiphilic hyperbranched polymer was molecularly characterized by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR), and 1H–NMR spectroscopy. Pyrene, curcumin, and IR-1048 dye were hydrophobic payload molecules successfully encapsulated to show how adaptable these homopolymer nanoparticles (prepared by nanoprecipitation in water) are as dye nanocarriers. This study demonstrates a simple way of producing excipients by generating polymeric nanoparticles from an amphiphilic, hyperbranched, hydrophobic homopolymer, with a low fraction of polar end groups, for bioimaging purposes.

Oil-core nanocapsules (NCs, also known as nanoemulsions) are of great interest due to their application as efficient carriers of various lipophilic bioactives, such as drugs. Here, we reported for the first time the preparation and characterization of NCs consisting of chondroitin sulfate (CS)-based shells and liquid oil cores. For this purpose, two amphiphilic CS derivatives (AmCSs) were obtained by grafting the polysaccharide chain with octadecyl or oleyl groups. AmCS-based NCs were prepared by an ultrasound-assisted emulsification of an oil phase consisting of a mixture of triglyceride oil and vitamin E in a dispersion of AmCSs. Dynamic light scattering and cryo-transmission electron microscopy showed that the as-prepared core–shell NCs have typical diameters in the range of 30–250 nm and spherical morphology. Since CS is a strong polyanion, these particles have a very low surface potential, which promotes their stabilization. The cytotoxicity of the CS derivatives and CS-based NCs and their impact on cell proliferation were analyzed using human keratinocytes (HaCaTs) and primary human skin fibroblasts (HSFs). In vitro studies showed that AmCSs dispersed in an aqueous medium, exhibiting mild cytotoxicity against HaCaTs, while for HSFs, the harmful effect was observed only for the CS derivative with octadecyl side groups. However, the nanocapsules coated with AmCSs, especially those filled with vitamin E, show high biocompatibility with human skin cells. Due to their stability under physiological conditions, the high encapsulation efficiency of their hydrophobic compounds, and biocompatibility, AmCS-based NCs are promising carriers for the topical delivery of lipophilic bioactive compounds.

To create materials that interact effectively with electromagnetic (EM) radiation, new nanosized substituted ferrites (NiZn)1−xMnxFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, and 1) anchored on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been synthesized. The concentration of CNTs in the (NiZn)1−xMnxFe2O4/CNT system was from 0.05 to 0.07 vol. fractions. The dielectric and magnetic characteristics of both pristine (NiZn)1−xMnxFe2O4 ferrites and (NiZn)1−xMnxFe2O4/CNT composite systems were studied. The introduction of (NiZn)1−xMnxFe2O4/CNT composites into the amorphous epoxy matrix allows to tailor absorbing properties at the high-frequency by effectively shifting the maximum peak values of the absorption and reflection coefficient to a region of lower frequencies (20–30 GHz). The microwave adsorption properties of (NiZn)1−xMnxFe2O4/0.07CNT–ER (x = 0.5) systems showed that the maximum absorption bandwidth with reflection loss below −10 dB is about 11 GHz.

Ropinirole is a non-ergolinic dopamine agonist used to manage Parkinson’s disease and it is characterized by poor oral bioavailability. This study aimed to design and develop advanced drug delivery systems composed of poloxamer 407, a non-ionic surfactant (Tween 80), and cyclodextrins (methyl-β-CD or hydroxy-propyl-β-CD) for possible brain targeting of ropinirole after nasal administration for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The hybrid systems were formed by the thin-film hydration method, followed by an extensive physicochemical and morphological characterization. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the systems on HEK293 cell lines was also tested. In vitro release and ex vivo mucosal permeation of ropinirole were assessed using Franz cells at 34 °C and with phosphate buffer solution at pH 5.6 in the donor compartment, simulating the conditions of the nasal cavity. The results indicated that the diffusion-controlled drug release exhibited a progressive increase throughout the experiment, while a proof-of-concept experiment on ex vivo permeation through rabbit nasal mucosa revealed a better performance of the prepared hybrid systems in comparison to ropinirole solution. The encouraging results in drug release and mucosal permeation indicate that these hybrid systems can serve as attractive platforms for effective and targeted nose-to-brain delivery of ropinirole with a possible application in Parkinson’s disease. Further ex vivo and in vivo studies to support the results of the present work are ongoing.

The combination of phospholipids and block-copolymers yields advanced hybrid nanoparticles through the self-assembly process in an aqueous environment. The physicochemical features of the lipid/polymer components, like the lipid–polymer molar ratio, the macromolecular architecture of the block copolymer, the main transition temperature of the phospholipid, as well as the formulation and preparation protocol parameters, are some of the most crucial parameters for the formation of hybrid lipid/polymer vesicles and for the differentiation of their morphology. The morphology, along with other physicochemical nanoparticle characteristics are strictly correlated with the nanoparticle’s later biological behavior after being administered, affecting interactions with cells, biodistribution, uptake, toxicity, drug release, etc. In the present study, a structural evaluation of hybrid lipid–polymer nanoparticles based on cryo-TEM studies was undertaken. Different kinds of hybrid lipid–polymer nanoparticles were designed and developed using phospholipids and block copolymers with different preparation protocols. The structures obtained ranged from spherical vesicles to rod-shaped structures, worm-like micelles, and irregular morphologies. The obtained morphologies were correlated with the formulation and preparation parameters and especially the type of lipid, the polymeric guest, and their ratio.

The field of two dimensional (2D) materials experienced a surge of discoveries after the isolation of graphene. Among these, the transition metal compounds of Molybdenum and tungsten have been the most extensively studied materials after graphene. More recently, their group member chromium has only recently come to the limelight after the discovery of its exciting magnetic properties. As such the body of work surrounding 2D chromium-based materials is growing. Here, we present an up-to-date summary of the chromium 2D materials showing the latest advances in their experimental synthesis, characterization and the applications of 2D Chromium-based compounds. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on the future of 2D chromium-based materials. We believe that this study will be helpful to understand the field of chromium-based 2D compounds.

This manuscript presents the synthesis of hyperbranched amphiphilic poly (lauryl methacrylate-co-tert-butyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid), H-P(LMA-co-tBMA-co-MAA) copolymers via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of tBMA and LMA, and their post-polymerization modification to anionic amphiphilic polyelectrolytes. The focus is on investigating whether the combination of the hydrophobic characters of LMA and tBMA segments, as well as the polyelectrolyte and hydrophilic properties of MAA segments, both distributed within a unique hyperbranched polymer chain topology, would result in intriguing, branched copolymers with the potential to be applied in nanomedicine. Therefore, we studied the self-assembly behavior of these copolymers in aqueous media, as well as their ability to form complexes with cationic proteins, namely lysozyme (LYZ) and polymyxin (PMX). Various physicochemical characterization techniques, including size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), verified the molecular characteristics of these well-defined copolymers, whereas light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques revealed promising nanoparticle (NP) self- and co-assembly properties of the copolymers in aqueous media.

The objective of this research was to develop highly effective conductive polymer composite (CPC) materials for flexible piezoresistive sensors, utilizing hollow three-dimensional graphitic shells as a highly conductive particulate component. Polystyrene (PS), a cost-effective and robust polymer widely used in various applications such as household appliances, electronics, automotive parts, packaging, and thermal insulation materials, was chosen as the polymer matrix. The hollow spherical three-dimensional graphitic shells (GS) were synthesized through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles serving as a support, which was removed post-synthesis and employed as the conductive filler. Commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used as a reference one-dimensional graphene material. The main focus of this study was to investigate the impact of the GS on the piezoresistive response of carbon/polymer composite thin films. The distribution and arrangement of GS and CNTs in the polymer matrix were analyzed using techniques such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, while the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the composites were also evaluated. The results revealed that the PS composite films filled with GS exhibited a more pronounced piezoresistive response as compared to the CNT-based composites, despite their lower mechanical and thermal performance.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a promising drug candidate with pleiotropic pharmacological activity, whose low aqueous solubility and unfavorable pharmacokinetics have presented obstacles to its full clinical implementation. The rational design of nanocarriers, including niosomes for CBD encapsulation, can provide a plausible approach to overcoming these limitations. The present study is focused on exploring the feasibility of copolymer-modified niosomes as platforms for systemic delivery of CBD. To confer steric stabilization, the niosomal membranes were grafted with newly synthesized amphiphilic linear or star-shaped 3- and 4-arm star-shaped copolymers based on polyglycidol (PG) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) blocks. The niosomes were prepared by film hydration method and were characterized by DLS, cryo-TEM, encapsulation efficacy, and in vitro release. Free and formulated cannabidiol were further investigated for cytotoxicity and pro-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro in three human tumor cell lines. The optimal formulation, based on Tween 60:Span60:Chol (3.5:3.5:3 molar ration) modified with 2.5 mol% star-shaped 3-arm copolymer, is characterized by a size of 235 nm, high encapsulation of CBD (94%), and controlled release properties. Niosomal cannabidiol retained the antineoplastic activity of the free agent, but noteworthy superior apoptogenic and inflammatory biomarker-modulating effects were established at equieffective exposure vs. the free drug. Specific alterations in key signaling molecules, implicated in programmed cell death, cancer cell biology, and inflammation, were recorded with the niosomal formulations.

The thermal behavior and aggregation process of the poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide), poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate], and poly[(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] thermoresponsive polymers were studied in a commonly used Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) cell culture medium and solutions of its individual components in the same concentration as found in DMEM. All studied copolymers exhibited an unexpected transmittance profile in the DMEM. During heating above the cloud point temperature (TCP), the polymers additionally aggregated, which led to the formation of their precipitates. The behavior of the polymers was further studied to evaluate how individual salts affected the transition temperature, size (Dh), and stability of the polymer particles. Organic additives, such as amino acids and glucose, had a significantly lesser impact on the thermoresponsive aggregation of the polymers than inorganic ones. Changes to the TCP were small and the formation of precipitates was not observed. The presence of small amounts of amino acids caused a decrease in the polymer aggregate sizes. Obtained results are of utmost importance in thermoresponsive drug nanocarrier studies.

Gel dressings, composed of polymers both natural and synthetic, are successfully used in the treatment of burn wounds. They protect the burn wound site against adverse external factors, ensure an adequate level of tissue hydration, have soothing and pain-relieving properties, and also support the healing process and reduce the risk of pathological scars. Another promising material that can be used in the wound-healing process is an amnion membrane. Due to its valuable properties such as protecting the body against bacterial infections and permeability to nutrition, it has found usage in different brands of medicine. In this work, we have combined the beneficial properties of hydrogels and amnion in order to make the laminar dressing that may serve for wound healing. For that purpose, the physically crosslinked cryogel of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was covered with an amnion membrane. Subsequently, gamma irradiation was performed, leading to the simultaneous internal crosslinking of the hydrogel, its permanent bonding with the amnion, and dressing sterilization. The physicochemical properties of the dressing including gel fraction, swelling, and hardness were studied. Biological tests such as the MTT assay, antimicrobial activity, and histopathological examination confirmed that the obtained material constituted a promising candidate for further, more in-depth studies aiming at wound dressing application.

Electrothermal processes were studied in pyroresistive composites based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containing 8 vol.% carbon black (CB), 8 vol.% carbon fibers (CF), and their mixture 4 vol.% CB + 4 vol.% CF. It is shown that the kinetic heating curves of composites are well described by an exponential dependence with a certain heating rate constant k for each type of composite. After a short heating time, the equilibrium temperature Te is reached in the sample. When the applied voltage exceeds a certain value, the Te value decreases due to the presence of the positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTC) effect. Due to the PTC effect, the composites exhibit a self-regulating effect relative to the Te. Relations between the applied voltage, electric power, and equilibrium temperature are found, the Te value depends on the applied voltage according to the quadratic law whereas there is a linear relationship between the Te and electric power. A possible application of such pyroresistive composites is resistance welding of plastics using a heating element (HE) made of a pyroresistive material. The use of HDPE-CB composite to create HE for resistance welding is demonstrated and the welded joint of HDPE parts obtained using HE is shown.

Abstract Carbon, owing to its unique properties such as surface area, pore features, conductivity, and chemical and thermal stability, has found several applications in the field of sensors, energy storage, electrocatalysis, and hydrogen storage. However, the properties of pristine carbon are sometimes insufficient to meet the requirements of a particular application. Heteroatom co‐doping may not only enhance the surface area, improve the porosity, and enhance the redox activity, but it also increases stability. B, N heteroatom co‐doping has gained popularity as it is found to be an effective way to enhance the properties of porous carbon by influencing the physicochemical, electrochemical, and electrical properties, thereby widening its applications. In this review, the rational synthetic strategies that are used to produce B, N co‐doped carbon are described. Further, the charge conduction in such B, N co‐doped carbon‐based materials (including metal and metal‐free) is discussed in detail. Certain remarkable works representing the various applications of B, N co‐doped carbon in the area of electrocatalysis, energy storage (rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors), and sensors are also highlighted. Finally, the review ends with a discussion of the existing challenges and possible future directions of research on B, N co‐doped carbon.

Lipid-polymer chimeric (hybrid) nanosystems are promising platforms for the design of effective gene delivery vectors. In this regard, we developed DNA nanocarriers comprised of a novel poly[(stearyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] [P(SMA-co-OEGMA)] amphiphilic random copolymer, the cationic 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane (DOTAP), and the zwitterionic L-α-phosphatidylcholine, hydrogenated soybean (soy) (HSPC) lipids. Chimeric HSPC:DOTAP:P[(SMA-co-OEGMA)] nanosystems, and pure lipid nanosystems as reference, were prepared in several molar ratios of the components. The colloidal dispersions obtained presented well-defined physicochemical characteristics and were further utilized for the formation of lipoplexes with a model DNA of linear topology containing 113 base pairs. Nanosized complexes were formed through the electrostatic interaction of the cationic lipid and phosphate groups of DNA, as observed by dynamic, static, and electrophoretic light scattering techniques. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy disclosed the strong binding affinity of the chimeric and also the pure lipid nanosystems to DNA. Colloidally stable chimeric/lipid complexes were formed, whose physicochemical characteristics depend on the N/P ratio and on the molar ratio of the building components. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) revealed the formation of nanosystems with vesicular morphology. The results suggest the successful fabrication of these novel chimeric nanosystems with well-defined physicochemical characteristics, which can form stable lipoplexes.

Spherical nucleic acids (SNAs)—nanostructures, consisting of a nanoparticle core densely functionalized with a shell of short oligonucleotide strands—are a rapidly emerging class of nanoparticle-based therapeutics with unique properties and specific applications as drug and nucleic acid delivery and gene regulation materials. In this contribution, we report on the preparation of hollow SNA nanoconstructs by co-assembly of an originally synthesized nucleolipid—a hybrid biomacromolecule, composed of a lipidic residue, covalently linked to a DNA oligonucleotide strand—with other lipids. The nucleolipid was synthesized via a click chemistry approach employing initiator-free, UV light-induced thiol-ene coupling of appropriately functionalized intermediates, performed in mild conditions using a custom-made UV light-emitting device. The SNA nanoconstructs were of a vesicular structure consisting of a self-closed bilayer membrane in which the nucleolipid was intercalated via its lipid–mimetic residue. They were in the lower nanometer size range, moderately negatively charged, and were found to carry thousands of oligonucleotide strands per particle, corresponding to a grafting density comparable to that of other SNA structures. The surface density of the strands on the bilayer implied that they adopted an unextended conformation. We demonstrated that preformed vesicular structures could be successfully loaded with either hydrophilic or hydrophobic dyes.

Nanogels (NGs) have attracted great attention because of their outstanding biocompatibility, biodegradability, very low toxicity, flexibility, and softness. NGs are characterized with a low and nonspecific interaction with blood proteins, meaning that they do not induce any immunological responses in the body. Due to these properties, NGs are considered promising candidates for pharmaceutical and biomedical application. In this work, we introduce the development of novel functional nanogel obtained from two naturally based products—citric acid (CA) and pentane-1,2,5-triol (PT). The nanogel was synthesized by precipitation esterification reaction of CA and PT in tetrahydrofuran using N-ethyl-N′-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) catalyst system. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses revealed formation of spherical nanogel particles with a negative surface charge. Next, the nanogel was loaded with doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) by electrostatic interactions between carboxylic groups present in the nanogel and amino groups of DOX. The drug-loaded nanogel exhibited high encapsulation efficiency (EE~95%), and a bi-phasic release behavior. Embedding DOX into nanogel also stabilized the drug against photodegradation. The degradability of nanogel under acidic and neutral conditions with time was investigated as well.

Abstract Hybrid nanostructures, such as those with nanoparticles anchored on the surface of nanowires, or decorated nanowires, have a large number of potential and tested applications such as: gas sensing, catalysis, plasmonic waveguides, supercapacitors and more. The downside of these nanostructures is their production. Generally, multi-step synthesis procedures are used, with the nanowires and the nanoparticles typically produced separately and then integrated. The few existent single-step methods are lengthy or necessitate highly dedicated setups. In this paper we report a single-step and rapid (ca. 1 min) laser ablation synthesis method which produces a wide variety of boron-rich decorated nanowires. Furthermore, the method is carried at room temperature. The synthesis process consists on a filamentary jet ejection process driven by pressure gradients generated by the ablation plume on the rims of the irradiation crater. Simultaneously nanoparticles are nucleated and deposited on the filaments thus producing hybrid decorated nanowires.

Liposomes with adjuvant properties are utilized to carry biomolecules, such as proteins, that are often sensitive to the stressful conditions of liposomal preparation processes. The aim of the present study is to use the aqueous heat method for the preparation of polymer-grafted hybrid liposomes without any additional technique for size reduction. Towards this scope, liposomes were prepared through the combination of two different lipids with adjuvant properties, namely dimethyldioctadecylammonium (DDA) and D-(+)-trehalose 6,6′-dibehenate (TDB) and the amphiphilic block copolymer poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA-b-PDMAEMA). For comparison purposes, PAMAM dendrimer generation 4 (PAMAM G4) was also used. Preformulation studies were carried out by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The physicochemical characteristics of the prepared hybrid liposomes were evaluated by light scattering and their morphology was evaluated by cryo-TEM. Subsequently, in vitro nanotoxicity studies were performed. Protein-loading studies with bovine serum albumin were carried out to evaluate their encapsulation efficiency. According to the results, PDMAEMA-b-PLMA was successfully incorporated in the lipid bilayer, providing improved physicochemical and morphological characteristics and the ability to carry higher cargos of protein, compared to pure DDA:TDB liposomes, without affecting the biocompatibility profile. In conclusion, the aqueous heat method can be applied in polymer-grafted hybrid liposomes for protein delivery without further size-reduction processes.

The current study describes the elaboration of a hybrid drug delivery platform for an intravesical application based on curcumin/gentamicin sulfate simultaneously loaded niosomes incorporated into thermosensitive in situ gels. Series of niosomes were elaborated via the thin film hydration method, evaluating the impact of non-ionic surfactants’, cholesterol’s, and curcumin’s concentration. The formulation composed of equimolar ratio of Span 60, Tween 60, and 30 mol% cholesterol was selected as the optimal composition, due to the high entrapment efficiency values obtained for both drugs, and appropriate physicochemical parameters (morphology, size, PDI, and zeta potential), therefore, was further incorporated into Poloxamers (407/188) and Poloxamers and chitosan based in situ gels. The developed hybrid systems were characterized with sol to gel transition in the physiological range, suitable rheological and gelling characteristics. In addition, the formed gel structure at physiological temperatures determines the retarded dissolution of both drugs (vs. niosomal suspension) and sustained release profile. The conducted microbial studies of selected niosomal in situ gels revealed the occurrence of a synergetic effect of the two compounds when simultaneously loaded. The findings indicate that the elaborated thermosensitive niosomal in situ gels can be considered as a feasible platform for intravesical drug delivery.

Nanoporous carbon is synthesized on the base of phenol-formaldehyde resin and polyolefin wax, a by-product from industrial production of polyethylene at low pressure. The adsrption of phenol derivates from aqueous solutions on obtained carbon material was studied. The adsorption capacity of the carbon is related to the surface area and composition of the synthesized material, as well as to the nature of the adsorbent. The obtained adsorbent is characterized by high surface area and porosity, and it demonstrates high adsorption capacity towards aromatic compounds. All studied phenolic compounds show high affinity towards carbon, confirming that the retention mechanism occurs via non-specific interactions between the electronic density of the adsorbent and molecules of aromatic pollutants. Electrostatic interactions may also appear depending on pH of the solution pH and charge distribution of the carbons; and these effects has a strong influence on the final performance of the carbon.

In this paper, an original method of synthesis of Coil-Brush amphiphilic polystyrene-b-(polyglycidol-g-polyglycidol) (PS-b-(PGL-g-PGL)) block copolymers was developed. The hypothesis that their hydrophilicity and micellization can be controlled by polyglycidol blocks architecture was verified. The research enabled comparison of behavior in water of PS-b-PGL copolymers and block–brush copolymers PS-b-(PGL-g-PGL) with similar composition. The Coil-Brush copolymers were composed of PS-b-PGL linear core with average DPn of polystyrene 29 and 13 of polyglycidol blocks. The DPn of polyglycidol side blocks of coil–b–brush copolymers were 2, 7, and 11, respectively. The copolymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, GPC, and FTIR methods. The hydrophilicity of films from the linear and Coil-Brush copolymers was determined by water contact angle measurements in static conditions. The behavior of Coil-Brush copolymers in water and their critical micellization concentration (CMC) were determined by UV-VIS using 1,6-diphenylhexa-1,3,5-trien (DPH) as marker and by DLS. The CMC values for brush copolymers were much higher than for linear species with similar PGL content. The results of the copolymer film wettability and the copolymer self-assembly studies were related to fraction of hydrophilic polyglycidol. The CMC for both types of polymers increased exponentially with increasing content of polyglycidol.

The investigation of properties of amphiphilic block copolymers as stabilizers for non-lamellar lyotropic liquid crystalline nanoparticles represents a fundamental issue for the formation, stability and upgraded functionality of these nanosystems. The aim of this work is to use amphiphilic block copolymers, not studied before, as stabilizers of glyceryl monooleate 1-(cis-9-octadecenoyl)-rac-glycerol (GMO) colloidal dispersions. Nanosystems were prepared with the use of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(lactic acid) (PEO-b-PLA) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(5-methyl-5-ethyloxycarbonyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one) (PEO-b-PMEC) block copolymers. Different GMO:polymer molar ratios lead to formulation of nanoparticles with different size and internal organization, depending on the type of hydrophobic block. Resveratrol was loaded into the nanosystems as a model hydrophobic drug. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of the prepared nanosystems were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The studies allowed the description of the lyotropic liquid crystalline nanoparticles and evaluation of impact of copolymer composition on these nanosystems. The structures formed in GMO:block copolymer colloidal dispersions were compared with those discussed previously. The investigations broaden the toolbox of polymeric stabilizers for the development of this type of hybrid polymer/lipid nanostructures.

The review summarizes the research carried out in the Laboratory of Nano- and Microstructural Materials at the Centre of Polymer and Carbon Materials, Polish Academy of Sciences (CMPW PAS). Studies carried out for many years under the guidance of Professor Andrzej Dworak led to the development and exploration of the mechanisms of oxirane and cyclic imine polymerization and controlled radical polymerization of methacrylate monomers. Based on that knowledge, within the last three decades, macromolecules with the desired composition, molar mass and topology were obtained and investigated. The ability to control the structure of the synthesized polymers turned out to be important, as it provided a way to tailor the physiochemical properties of the materials to their specific uses. Many linear polymers and copolymers as well as macromolecules with branched, star, dendritic and hyperbranched architectures were synthesized. Thanks to the applied controlled polymerization techniques, it was possible to obtain hydrophilic, hydrophobic, amphiphilic and stimulus-sensitive polymers. These tailor-made polymers with controlled properties were used for the construction of various types of materials, primarily on the micro- and nanoscales, with a wide range of possible applications, mainly in biomedicine. The diverse topology of polymers, and thus their properties, made it possible to obtain various types of polymeric nanostructures and use them as nanocarriers by encapsulation of biologically active substances. Additionally, polymer layers were obtained with features useful in medicine, particularly regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.

Extrusion is a popular method for producing homogenous population of unilamellar liposomes. The technique relies on forcing a lipid suspension through cylindrical pores in a polycarbonate membrane. The quantification of the extrusion and/or recalibration processes make possible the acquisition of experimental data, which can be correlated with the mechanical properties of the lipid bilayer. In this work, the force needed for the extrusion process was correlated with the mechanical properties of a lipid bilayer derived from other experiments. Measurements were performed using a home-made dedicated device capable of maintaining a stable volumetric flux of a liposome suspension through well-defined pores and to continuously measure the extrusion force. Based on the obtained results, the correlation between the lipid bilayer bending rigidity and extrusion force was derived. Specifically, it was found that the bending rigidity of liposomes formed from well-defined lipid mixtures agrees with data obtained by others using flicker-noise spectroscopy or micromanipulation. The other issue addressed in the presented studies was the identification of molecular mechanisms leading to the formation of unilamellar vesicles in the extrusion process. Finally, it was demonstrated that during the extrusion, lipids are not exchanged between vesicles, i.e., vesicles can divide but no membrane fusion or lipid exchange between bilayers was detected.

Thermoresponsive polymers are a promising material for drug nanocarrier preparation, which makes the study of their aggregation in physiological conditions very important. In this paper, the thermal behaviour of the thermoresponsive polymers poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline-co-2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline) and poly[(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] were studied in phosphate buffer (PBS) and solutions of its salts in concentration as in PBS. The thermal response of the polymers was measured using UV-Vis and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The salts shifted the cloud point temperature (TCP) of the (co)polymers to higher values compared to the TCP of aqueous polymer solutions. In PBS and NaCl solutions, all polymers exhibited an unexpected and previously unreported transmittance profile. During heating, an additional aggregation of polymers appeared above the TCP accompanied by the formation of a precipitate. In monosodium phosphate solutions and pure water, the studied polymers showed lower critical solution temperature (LCST-type) behaviour. DLS measurements showed that a salt influenced the size of the resulting polymer particles. The sizes and stability of particles depended on the heating rate. In PBS and NaCl solutions, the size of particles in the dispersion decreased above 60 °C, and the precipitate appeared on the bottom of the cuvette. The additional aggregation of polymer and its falling out of solution may hinder the removal of carriers from the body and has to be taken into account when preparing nanocarriers.

A series of copolymers of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (D) and 2-aminoethyl methacrylate (A) (P(D-co-A)) with variable ratios of comonomers were synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization. Then, the amino groups of obtained copolymers were modified to clickable azide or prop-2-yn-1-yl carbamate groups. A thermoresponsive copolymers were obtained with the value of cloud point temperature (TCP) dependent on the type and number of functional groups in the copolymer and on the concentration of solutions. For P(D-co-A) copolymers, the TCP increased with increasing content of 2-aminoethyl methacrylate comonomer. The presence of azide and prop-2-yn-1-yl carbamate groups caused the changes of TCP of modified copolymers. All studied copolymers in dilute aqueous solutions aggregated above TCP to nanoparticles with sizes dependent on the solution concentration, heating procedures, and types and numbers of functional groups present in a copolymer chain. The presence of hydrophilic elements in the chain and the increase in the copolymer concentration led to the enlargement of the particle sizes. Aggregates were crosslinked using click reaction between an azide and prop-2-yn-1-yl carbamate groups that led to stable thermoresponsive nanogels. A systematic study of the behavior of copolymers allowed the determination of the chains useful for possible application in drug delivery.

We report on the preparation of novel and multifunctional hybrid spherical-shaped nanostructures involving a double-hydrophilic block copolymer, namely the neutral cationic poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]-b-poly[(vinyl benzyl trimethylammonium chloride)] (POEGMA-b-PVBTMAC) diblock copolymer, initially complexed with hydrophilic anionic magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and subsequently, with short deoxyribonucleic acid (113 bases DNA). The POEGMA-b-PVBTMAC copolymer, the copolymer/MNPs and the copolymer/MNPs/DNA tricomponent hybrid electrostatic complexes were studied by dynamic/electrophoretic light scattering (DLS/ELS) and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) techniques for the determination of their structure and solution properties. The MNPs were complexed efficiently with the oppositely charged diblock chains, leading to well-defined hybrid organic–inorganic spherical-shaped nanostructures. A significant aggregation tendency of the MNPs is noticed in cryo-TEM measurements after the electrostatic complexation of DNA, implying an accumulation of the DNA macromolecules on the surface of the hybrid tricomponent complexes. Magnetophoretic experiments verified that the MNPs maintain their magnetic properties after the complexation initially with the copolymer, and subsequently, within the block polyelectrolyte/MNPs/DNA nanostructures.

In this paper, we present research on thermal transition temperature determination in poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT), [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC60BM), and their blends, which are materials that are conventionally used in organic optoelectronics. Here, for the first time the results of electrical resistance measurements are explored to detect thermal transitions temperatures, such as glass transition Tg and cold crystallization Tcc of the film. To confirm these results, the variable-temperature spectroscopic ellipsometry studies of the same samples were performed. The thermal transitions temperatures obtained with electrical measurements are well suited to phase diagram, constructed on the basis of ellipsometry in our previous work. The data presented here prove that electrical resistance measurements alone are sufficient for qualitative thermal analysis, which lead to the identification of characteristic temperatures in P3HT:PC60BM films. Based on the carried studies, it can be expected that the determination of thermal transition temperatures by means of electrical resistance measurements will also apply to other semi-conducting polymer films.

In this work, the self-assembly of a series of amphiphilic polystyrene-b-polyglycidol (PS-b-PGL) diblock copolymers in dioxane and dioxane/water mixtures is presented. The PS-b-PGL have an average degree of polymerization (DP) of PS block equal to 29 units and varied degrees of polymerization for the glycidol segments with DPs of 13, 42, 69 and 117. In dioxane, amphiphilic diblock copolymers form micelles with the hydrophilic PGL placed in the core. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) was determined based on the intensity of scattered light vs. concentration. The micelle size was measured by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Also, the behaviour of the copolymer was studied in water/dioxane solutions by following the changes of scattered light intensity with the addition of water to the system. Critical water content (CWC) of the studied systems decreased as the initial PS-b-PGL concentration in dioxane increased. This process was accompanied by a decrease in the size of aggregate formed. For a given initial copolymer concentration, the size of copolymer aggregates decreased linearly with increasing the length of the PGL block

There is an emerging need to evolve the conventional lyotropic liquid crystalline nanoparticles to advanced stimuli-responsive, therapeutic nanosystems with upgraded functionality. Towards this effort, typically used stabilizers, such as Pluronics®, can be combined or replaced by smart, stimuli-responsive block copolymers. The aim of this study is to incorporate the stimuli-responsive amphiphilic block copolymer poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-b-PLMA) as a stabilizer in lipidic liquid crystalline nanoparticles, in order to provide steric stabilization and simultaneous stimuli-responsiveness. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of the prepared nanosystems were investigated by light scattering techniques, cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The PDMAEMA-b-PLMA, either individually or combined with Poloxamer 407, exhibited different modes of stabilization depending on the lipid used. Due to the protonation ability of PDMAEMA blocks in acidic pH, the nanoparticles exhibited high positive charge, as well as pH-responsive charge conversion, which can be exploited towards pharmaceutical applications. The ionic strength, temperature and serum proteins influenced the physicochemical behavior of the nanoparticles, while the polymer concentration differentiated their morphology; their micropolarity and microfluidity were also evaluated. The proposed liquid crystalline nanosystems can be considered as novel and attractive pH-responsive drug and gene delivery nanocarriers due to their polycationic content.

The isolation of a single layer of graphite, known today as graphene, not only demonstrated amazing new properties but also paved the way for a new class of materials often referred to as two-dimensional (2D) materials. Beyond graphene, other 2D materials include h-BN, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), silicene, and germanene, to name a few. All tend to have exciting physical and chemical properties which appear due to dimensionality effects and modulation of their band structure. A more recent member of the 2D family is graphene-like zinc oxide (g-ZnO) which also holds great promise as a future functional material. This review examines current progress in the synthesis and characterization of g-ZnO. In addition, an overview of works dealing with the properties of g-ZnO both in its pristine form and modified forms (e.g., nano-ribbon, doped material, etc.) is presented. Finally, discussions/studies on the potential applications of g-ZnO are reviewed and discussed.
