This chapter focuses on Roman revivals of the 1690s, mostly of Venetian operas, in order to explore the link between the staging, that is the combination of set design and action taking place on the stage, and the development of Roman opera. While performances were common in aristocratic palaces, it is only with the opening of the Teatro Tordinona in 1671 that the Roman aristocracy, in spite of the frequent papal bans, attempted to establish commercial productions on a regular basis. Roman revivals of the 1690s provide enlightening information on character adjustments and propriety enhancement, showing an attempt to subscribe to the rules of classical theater. The comparison between a few examples of Venetian librettos and stage directions and their Roman revivals in the 1690s illustrates that staging and acting were significant elements of the performance, and were submitted to revision the same way that music and text were renewed or adapted to local taste.

Si les circonstances de la réception de l’opéra italien en France au xviie siècle sont aujourd’hui connues, il reste tout de même encore des questions ouvertes concernant les modalités effectives de l’acclimatation de ce répertoire à la cour. Malgré les efforts de Mazarin pour italianiser le milieu musical français, les opéras italiens donnés entre 1645 et 1662 ont été soumis à des réadaptations orientées vers une francisation, de nature artistique ou politique, au moment d’être présentés au public de la cour. Ce processus s’est déroulé par phases et en suivant plusieurs étapes : dans les années 1645-1647, il concerne principalement le texte et la musique des opéras, tandis que dans la période suivante, 1654-1662, les remaniements interviennent d’une manière plus envahissante par l’insertion d’éléments issus de genres musicaux français, tel le ballet de cour. Parallèlement, avec l’entrée du roi dans l’âge adulte, l’ingérence d’éléments politiques se fait tangible, notamment après la disparition de Mazarin. Le propos de cette étude est d’explorer ce croisement d’influences et de montrer comment l’objet « opéra italien » a progressivement été dévêtu de ses connotations artistiques saillantes pour répondre aux enjeux de nature artistique et politique propres au contexte de la cour dans la période charnière de la passation du pouvoir entre Mazarin et Louis XIV. While the reception of Italian opera in seventeenth-century France is now well known, questions remain concerning the manner of this repertoire’s acclimation to the court. Despite Mazarin’s efforts to Italianize the French musical landscape, the Italian operas presented at court between 1645 and 1662 were subject to readaptations aimed at their Frenchifying, either artistically or politically. This process took place in phases and in several steps: from 1645 to 1647 it was predominantly concerned with the operas’ text and music, while from 1654 to 1662 reworkings were more invasive, inserting elements from French musical genres, such as the ballet de court. At the same time, as the king reached the age of majority, political interference became clear, particularly after the death of Mazarin. The purpose of this study is to explore the interplay of influences and to show how the object of “Italian opera” was gradually stripped of its significant artistic overtones in response to artistic and political issues specific to the court in the pivotal period of the transfer of power from Mazarin to Louis XIV.

The repertory of the Comédie-Italienne in the last two decades of the seventeenth century, as recorded by Evaristo Gherardi’s 'Le Théâtre italien', documents numerous references to the operatic world, both French and Italian. Notwithstanding privilege-related restrictions, the Italians could rely on the resources of a troupe trained in instrumental, vocal, and choreographic practice. The influence of French opera, however, extended further than a pattern of references to airs from famous works, to the point of encompassing dramatic situations and images associated with them. This paper aims to understand the modes of appropriation of operatic topoï at several levels: musical on the one hand, spectacular and theatrical on the other. The former, through an analysis of the works sung, makes it possible to assess the musical savoir-faire of the Italians compared to that of the Opéra; the other two, through a process of reinvention, contributed to the definition of a set of images specific to the Comédie-Italienne, resulting in stage situ-ations relating to the world of opera.

The practice of adding airs to the repertoire of the Académie royale de musique is documented over a period of about two decades, between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This paper aims to deepen our knowledge of this practice by highlighting the performers’ role in its establishment and consolidation, through the analysis of three major aspects: the relationship with Italian opera and with the Italianate fashion that took over the Parisian theatrical and musical world at the end of Louis XIV’s reign; the analysis of the repertoire of added airs and their place in operatic works; the under-standing of the way this practice served as a means of self-promotion and distinction for the singers within the troupe.

International audience; Associée depuis la Renaissance au roi de France, déjà présent dans des œuvres théâtrales du XVIIe siècle, la figure d’Hercule occupe aussi une place de choix dans le répertoire d’opéra. Depuis l’Ercole amante de Francesco Cavalli (1662) jusqu’à Hercule mourant de Dauvergne (1761), le héros a été propulsé sur le devant de la scène, souvent associé à la représentation du roi de France. Cette communication se focalise sur quatre opéras créés pendant le règne de Louis XIV, dont Hercule est protagoniste : Ercole amante ; Alceste ou Le Triomphe d’Alcide de Lully, 1674 ; Alcide ou le Triomphe d’Hercule de Marais, 1693 ; Omphale de Destouches, 1701). Tout d'abord, le façonnement du personnage d’Hercule sera abordé du point de vue de la vocalité et de l’emploi, tenant compte aussi des exigences liées au contexte historique et politique de la création de ces œuvres. Ensuite, seront considérées les parodies des trois tragédies lyriques citées. S’attachant aux défaillances, réelles ou prétendues, des œuvres lyriques, les parodies révèlent par contraste la manière dont Hercule, en véritable héros protéiforme, était représenté sur la scène de l’opéra et perçu par le public.
