2. Perceptions of tropical urban and peri-urban lagoons in the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain: a public ecosystem services study.

Urban lagoons, which provide diverse ecosystem services, exhibit variations between urban and peri-urban settings. Surveys in Tabasco evaluated public perceptions of the "La Encantada" (LE) and "Luis Gil Pérez" (LGP) lagoons, focusing on cultural and economic services. Statistical analyses of 168 respondents revealed differences based on age, gender, and education; however, no significant gender or age disparities were found between the areas. Education, especially high school (75%), played a key role in shaping perceptions and influencing property ownership patterns. Despite differences in knowledge and property modifications, overall perceptions of ecosystem services remained similar. However, disparities emerged in specific landscape units, age groups, and education levels. Environmental education and recreation were highly valued, with preferences varying by age and education. Gender had no significant impact, aligning with regional trends. Education differences, influenced by cultural beliefs, shaped wetland understandings. Inconsistencies in property modifications and wetland perceptions, influenced by location, highlighted the importance of biodiversity. The perceived significance of ecosystem services aligned with folk knowledge, particularly in oxygen provision. Generational differences revealed age-related perspectives on ecosystem services. The study challenged regional norms, exposing unexpected disparities in education and ecosystem service perceptions between LGP and LE. Knowledge gaps about wetlands raise conservation concerns, underscoring the need for further research. Recommendations include targeted environmental education, collaboration, and community-specific interventions. Invasive alien species are one of the main threats to the biodiversity of ecosystems worldwide. The armored catfish is an invasive species that threatens biodiversity and freshwater fisheries in invaded areas. This fish belongs to the family Loricariidae, native to the Amazon basin in South America. In Mexico, it was first detected in 1995 in the Mezcala River, belonging to the Balsas basin. This study aimed to explore the lengthweight relationship of Pterygoplichthys ssp. to observe whether the condition factor reveals variation from a dammed river (Grijalva) to a free-flowing river (Usumacinta). Given the physiological characteristics of armored catfish (benthic consumer, tolerance to hydrological disturbance and aquatic pollution, and wide reproductive range), we are certain that this fish will have a better value of condition factor in the Grijalva River than in the Usumacinta. The highest abundance of armored catfish was obtained in the Grijalva River (282 specimens). However, the largest and heaviest fish were caught in the Usumacinta River (34.4 ± 5.31 cm and 389 ± 138 g, respectively). The length-weight ratio showed a positive allometric growth rate in the Grijalva River (b < 3), while the Usumacinta River showed a negative allometric growth (b > 3). Furthermore, the condition factor demonstrated that armored catfish have superior conditions (greater robustness) in the Usumacinta River, which is a freef-lowing river, in comparison to the dammed Grijalva River. Food availability, species population density, and intra- and interspecific competition undoubtedly played a pivotal role in fish condition. The information generated in this study provides a solid foundation for more detailed analysis of armored catfish populations, including sex and different bodies of water. This will help us to monitor the populations of Pterygoplichthys spp. in the Mexican southeast more effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. - Abstract
Almost a decade ago, the Mexican government targeted to establish environmental water reserves (EWR)—a volume of water allocated for ecological protection based on the Environmental Flow Mexican Norm (eflows, NMX-AA-159-SCFI-2012, ratified in 2017)—in strategic low-pressured for water use and high conservation importance river basins throughout the country. To date, 12 EWRs have been declared for up to 50 years, which encompass 295 river basins and ~55% of the national mean annual runoff (MAR). In this article, we conducted a quality evaluation of the EWRs established. First, the EWR level was analyzed against the MAR and according to wider hydrological conditions. The EWR fulfillment was evaluated by comparing the volumes enacted against the theoretical (Norm implementation). Our findings revealed that independently of individual and regional water use and conservation merits context, ~75% of the EWRs met theoretical volumes at least at an acceptable level, of which medians ranged from 24% to 73% MAR (natural parametrization and A–D environmental objectives). These outcomes prove the usefulness and consistency of the Mexican strategic hierarchical approach for eflow assessments. Se proporcionan nuevos registros de la almeja asiática Corbicula fluminea(O. F Müller, 1774) para los humedales de las cuencas Papaloapan, Grijalva y Usumacinta. Se recolectó un total de 1,668 organismos en 7 localidades de la cuenca Papaloapan, 16 en Grijalva y 24 en Usumacinta, resultado de recolectas desde junio de 2011 hasta septiembre de 2015. Se registra su distribución en humedales ribereños, lacustres y estuarinos, en una diversidad de fondos desde limos hasta arenas, rocas y en sustratos con vegetación. Las mayores abundancias se presentaron para los humedales lacustres y en la cuenca del río Usumacinta. Se contribuye con el registro de 47 localidades en humedales de las cuencas del sureste, incrementando el conocimiento del estado que guardan las especies invasoras en el sureste de México, aun cuando hasta el momento no se han valorado los impactos ecológicos y económicos de las mismas.

- Abstract
The wetlands of the Balancán municipality were visually classified using LANDSAT satellite images during the minimum and maximum food seasons of 2007. A total of 13 289 ha (3.48 %) and of 35 519 ha (8.66 %) of wetlands were identified for the minimum and maximum food seasons respectively. A subsystem quantification indicated that 9 140 ha are riparian wetlands, 3 180 ha are lake areas and 968 ha are swamp wetlands for the minimum food season, whereas 15 687 ha are riparian, 7 117 ha are lakes and 12 714 ha are swamps for the maximum food season. Between-season variations were 2.40 to 3.71 % for riparian wetlands, 0.83 to 1.88 % for lake areas and 0. 25 to 3.07 % for swamp wetlands. The wetlands were classified within a range of greater than or equal to 1 ha, but smaller than 50 ha (70.9 % for the minimum food season and 75.1 % for the maximum food season) for the two seasons. A 2006 vs 2007 comparison of wetlands indicated that the lake areas increased by 3 170 ha, the swamps decreased by 16 542 ha and the riparian areas increased by 4 800 ha. The use of the geographic information system (GIS) and the visual interpretation of multispectral LANDSAT images (bands 4,3,2 combined) for both seasons, from which the Balancán municipality wetlands in the Usumacinta river basin were obtained, will provide basic data for management and regulation plans for the territory in this sub-region of Tabasco [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. - Abstract
Silvopastoral systems support local ecological and economical features as they enhance conservation of floral and faunal communities. As other animal communities, avifauna may be a good representative of habitat alterations, both as the species and functional levels. In order to attend the initiative of Mesoamerican Biological Corridor initiative (CBM) in the state of Tabasco, we studied the diversity of birds in two silvopastoral systems: scattered trees in pastures (ADP), and trees in boundary-hedgerows (AL). For this, we applied the fixed radius counting point method in three priority sites in Tabasco's CBM during the dry and wet season of 2011, and a total of 56, 60 and 62 points were evaluated in Huimanguillo, Tenosique and Tacotalpa, respectively. We observed 2 084 individuals of 154 species (79-89% of expected diversity) and 36 bird families. We detected 92, 87 and 85 species in Huimanguillo, Tenosique and Tacotalpa, respectively, including 35 protected species, of which 23, 19 and 16 in each locality, respectively. All sites showed high diversity (H' ≥ 3.20), low species dominance (D ≥ 0.08) and high equitability (J ≥ 0.77). Species composition showed differences between sites, being most similar Tacotalpa and Tenosique. Ten species were considered characteristic for sites. Although the silvopastoral system did contain protected species, the low diversity and the early successional character of the arboreal components were not attractive to frugivorous bird species. Diversification with native trees can improve the systems to create a complementary habitat and to increase landscape connectivity. The management of silvopastoral practices on cattle dominated landscapes in Tabasco could improve its ecological quality, and thus achieve the CBM's objectives ofbiodiversity conservation combined with human economic activities.

This study analyzed the effect of the commercial (EM, Japan) natural product composed by (Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) added to the water, in order to determine its effect in water quality, sediment and growth of L. vannamei under intensive culture. The evaluation included three treatments with a weekly addition of EM: i) tanks without probiotics (C), ii) tanks with a dose of 4 L/ha (EM1) and iii) tanks with a dose of 10 L/ha (EM2). The treatment C was carried out three times, while treatments EM1 and EM2 were carried out four times. A total of 4 350 shrimps were measured for total length and weight, to calculate total and porcentual weight gain, daily weight gain, specific growth rate (TCE), and food conversion factor (FCA); besides, the survival rate was estimated. The use of probiotics allowed a shorter harvest time in treatments EM1 (90 d) and EM2 (105 d) with relation to the treatment C (120d). Treatments EM1 and EM2 were within the recommended intervals for culture, with respect to treatment C. The use of probiotic bacteria significantly regulated pH (EM1, 8.03 +/- 0.33; EM2, 7.77 +/- 0.22; C, 9.08 +/- 0.35) and reduced nitrate concentration (EM1, 0.64 +/- 0.25 mg/L; EM2, 0.39 +/- 0.26 mg/L; C, 0.71 mg/L). Water pH mostly explained the variance with respect to the treatments. Treatment EM2 presented the greatest removal of organic matter (1.77 +/- 0.45%), whereas the contents of extractable phosphorus increased significantly in treatment EM1 with 21.6 +/- 7.99 mg/kg and in treatment EM2 with 21.6 +/- 8.45 mg/kg with control relation (14.3 +/- 5.47). The shrimp growth was influenced by dissolved oxygen, salinity and pH in the sediment, establishing that salinity was the most important variable in the weight with a negative association. Treatment EM1 recorded an improved TCE (2.69 +/- 0.35%/d) and FCA (1.46 +/- 0.20) with relation to the control treatment (TCE, 1.88 +/- 0.25%/d; FCA, 2.13 +/- 0.48). Survival was significantly greater in treatments containing probiotics with 61 +/- 8.76% and 60 +/- 10.5% for EM1 and EM2, respectively. This study indicated the positive effect obtained with the use of this commercial probiotic, to improve culture conditions and growth parameters in an intensive culture of L. vannamei.

- Abstract
San Pedro River's wetlands sustain trophic nets in the fluvial system, due to the high habitat availability, and space and temporal variations. In order to describe the relationship between environmental parameters and ichthyofauna, this study evaluated fish assemblages composition, distribution, abundance, density, biomass, richness species, diversity and equitability in the wetlands. Sampling considered three different sites and climatic seasons (dry, rainy and cold fronts). The physical and chemical parameters considered were dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, water transparency and the depth. Fishes were caught with a shrimp net, after six minutes towings and were identified afterwards. A total of 1 049 organisms of 25 fish species were caught, two of which were exotic species: Oreochromis niloticus and Parachromis managuense. A total of 23 species were found at site I (with the highest density 0.23 ind./m2), 17 at site II (0.23 ind./m2) and 14 at site III (0.12 ind./m2). The dry season had the highest species number with 21 species, followed by the rainy season with 17 species, and the cold season with five species. Similarly, the highest biomass (8.30 g/m2) was found in dry season, followed by the rainy (2.16 g/m2) and the cold seasons (0.03 g/m2). Considering seasons, highest density was found during the dry (0.436 ind./m2), followed by the rainy (0.213 ind./m2) and the cold (0.023 ind./m2) seasons. The dominant density species during the study period, according to the quadrants graphic of Olmstead-Tukey were: Petenia splendida, Vieja heterospila, Vieja synspila, Dorosoma petenense and Astyanax aeneus. There were significant differences in the species richness among sites. Temperature, depth and transparency showed differences among the seasons. The canonical correspondence analysis indicated that fish distribution was governed by environmental parameters during all seasons. In terms of fish abundance and composition, environmental parameters play an important role showing spatial and temporal differences in the ecosystem, this could be explained with the fact that most of young fishes have a movement behavior to the wetlands, searching refuge and feed during the dry season. Considering the diversity indexes variation, it may be concluded that San Pedro River's wetlands correspond to a system where the ichthyofauna composition fluctuates spatial and seasonally.
