The red deer Cervus elephus has been a common species in Italy until the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when its distribu- tion range started to considerably decrease, due to gradual deforestation and hunting pressure. Afterwards, the red deer has been reintroduced to many regions of the world, including Italy. In the Italian Apennines, the Acquerino-Cantagallo Natural Reserve (ACQUERINO) hosts one of the largest peninsular red deer populations, originated from a series of successful reintroductions. In this study, we meant to detect the level of genetic variability of Acquerino-Cantagallo Natural Reserve deer population and to investigate the genetic relationships with the other Italian and European populations. We identified five mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop) haplotypes, four falling in lineage A and one falling in lineage C, derived from at least two maternal lineages, confirming that ACQUERINO population should be the result of multiple reintroductions. Haplotype diversity (H = 0.50) and nucleotide (? = 0.004) diversity were low, but included into the deer range values. ACQUERINO population showed low levels of genetic diversity when compared to other European and Mediterranean populations, confirming that this expanding population may have been generated from a low number of founders.

Il presente documento restituisce una sintesi delle attività del progetto IMPACT ed è diviso in due parti. La prima parte evidenzia gli strumenti completati durante la durata del progetto, in particolare la rete di radar costieri per il monitoraggio delle correnti marine e la piattaforma webGIS per la consultazione dei dati raccolti ed elaborati dai partner di progetto. La seconda parte capitalizza sui suddetti strumenti per fornire sia indicazioni metodologiche che di governance. Nello specifico, la rete di radar costieri viene utilizzata per creare mappe di potenziale contaminazione e indicare in che condizioni le attività portuali possano essere più sostenibili. Le misure demografiche e i calcoli di ritenzione indicano il livello d'efficacia delle dimensioni attuali delle AMP mentre le misure di contaminazione suggeriscono di considerare un numero maggiore di stazioni nell'ottica di migliorare i piani di monitoraggio esistenti. In quest'ottica, le indicazioni rappresentano il piano d'azione e le linee guida del progetto. L'ulteriore espansione della rete di radar costieri prevista nei progetti SICOMAR plus e SINAPSI è la prova che la conclusione delle attività del progetto IMPACT sia in realtà solo un importante punto di partenza.

Background: Systematic reviews call for well-designed trials with clearly described intervention components to\ud support the effectiveness of educational campaigns to reduce patient delay in stroke presentation. We herein\ud describe the systematic development process of a campaign aimed to increase stroke awareness and preparedness.\ud Methods: Campaign development followed Intervention Mapping (IM), a theory- and evidence-based tool, and was\ud articulated in two phases: needs assessment and intervention development. In phase 1, two cross-sectional surveys\ud were performed, one aiming to measure stroke awareness in the target population and the other to analyze the\ud behavioral determinants of prehospital delay. In phase 2, a matrix of proximal program objectives was developed,\ud theory-based intervention methods and practical strategies were selected and program components and materials\ud produced.\ud Results: In phase 1, the survey on 202 citizens highlighted underestimation of symptom severity, as in only 44% of\ud stroke situations respondents would choose to call the emergency service (EMS). In the survey on 393 consecutive\ud patients, 55% presented over 2 hours after symptom onset; major determinants were deciding to call the general\ud practitioner first and the reaction of the first person the patient called. In phase 2, adult individuals were identified\ud as the target of the intervention, both as potential “patients” and witnesses of stroke. The low educational level\ud found in the patient survey called for a narrative approach in cartoon form. The family setting was chosen for the\ud message because 42% of patients who presented within 2 hours had been advised by a family member to call\ud EMS. To act on people’s tendency to view stroke as an untreatable disease, it was decided to avoid fear-arousal\ud appeals and use a positive message providing instructions and hope. Focus groups were used to test educational\ud products and identify the most suitable sites for message dissemination.\ud Conclusions: The IM approach allowed to develop a stroke campaign integrating theories, scientific evidence and\ud information collected from the target population, and enabled to provide clear explanations for the reasons behind\ud key decisions during the intervention development process.\ud Trial registration: NCT01881152. A plethora of optical techniques is currently available to obtain non-destructive, contactless, real time information with subcellular spatial resolution to observe cell processes. Each technique has its own unique features for imaging and for obtaining certain biological information. However none of the available techniques can be of universal use. For a comprehensive investigation of biological specimens and events, one needs to use a combination of bioimaging methods, often at the same time. Some modern confocal/multiphoton microscopes provide simultaneous fluorescence, fluorescence lifetime imaging, and four-dimensional imaging. Some of them can also easily be adapted for harmonic generation imaging, and to permit cell manipulation technique. In this work we present a multimodal optical workstation that extends a commercially available confocal microscope to include nonlinear/multiphoton microscopy and optical manipulation/stimulation tools. The nonlinear microscopy capabilities were added to the commercial confocal microscope by exploiting all the flexibility offered by the manufacturer. The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.), the most abundant waterfowl species, is an important migratory component of the Holartic fauna. In Europe, massive numbers of farm-reared mallards of unknown genetic origin are released into the wild for hunting and in urban areas for ornamental purposes. Human manipulations have caused shifts in range, influenced migration propensity, led to behavioural modifications and altered the genetics of this duck species. With the aim to contribute to knowledge on the genetic consequences of large-scale game releases of mallards in southern Europe, we analysed the relationship among 245 individuals (wild and captive-bred) from eight localities in central and northern Italian regions and four from North America, by using nine microsatellite loci. In most Italian sites, a large admixture of mallard strains were observed, whereas significant genetic differentiation levels were found between urban and wild populations and among the wild population from North America and all European populations.

Using data from the PRIAMO study, we investigated non-motor symptoms (NMS) versus frontal lobe dysfunction in patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease (PD); 808 patients with PD and 118 with atypical parkinsonisms (AP) were consecutively enrolled at 55 Centers in Italy. Twelve categories of NMS were investigated. Cognitive impairment was defined as a Mini-Mental Status Evaluation score ≤ 23.8 and frontal lobe dysfunction as a Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) score ≤ 3.48. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictor of frontal lobe dysfunction in 524 PD patients, and a generalized linear model was used for each of the six FAB items. Not only the total FAB scores but also the single FAB items were lower in AP versus PD (p ≤ 0.005). Age (OR = 1.05), cognitive impairment (OR = 9.54), lack of cardiovascular symptoms (OR = 3.25), attention or memory problems (OR = 0.59) and treatment with L: -DOPA (OR = 5.58) were predictors of frontal lobe dysfunction. MMSE was negatively associated with all FAB items (β ≤ -0.16) and age with all FAB items but prehension behavior (β ≤ -0.01). Previous use of L: -DOPA was negatively associated with verbal fluency (β = -0.32) possibly acting as surrogate marker of disease duration. Cognitive impairment is a predictor of frontal lobe dysfunction. Among NMS, lack of attention or memory problems were negatively associated with frontal impairment. Further studies are nonetheless needed to better identify the predictors of frontal impairment in PD patients.

Within the Cirolanidae, a widespread family of marine isopods, about 23 genera are stygobitic and inhabit phreatic and anchialine ecosystems, with many endemic species. The Mediterranean area has a high biodiversity of subterranean cirolanids, which are considered thalassoid limnostygobionts. A molecular analysis was conducted using mtDNA genes to infer the phylogeny of species belonging to six of the seven stygobitic genera of Cirolanidae inhabiting the Mediterranean basin and to two American taxa: Faucheria faucheri, Marocolana delamarei, Saharolana seurati, Sphaeromides virei virei, Turcolana sp., 13 taxa of the genus Typhlocirolana and two American species, Antrolana lira and Speocirolana bolivari. The Typhlocirolana species are widespread in the western Mediterranean basin, with a concentration of taxa in the Maghreb region. Turcolana sp. is localised in the eastern Mediterranean, while F. faucheri and S. v. virei are north Mediterranean taxa. S. seurati, the taxon least morphologically adapted to subterranean life, belongs to a monospecific genus present in a Tunisian spring. The molecular phylogeny showed a high affinity among the American taxa and the Mediterranean Sphaeromides, clustering in the Sphaeromides group identified by previous morphological studies. Typhlocirolana species and M. delamarei constitute their sister clade within the Sphaeromides group. F. faucheri appears to be a sister clade of the Sphaeromides group. S. seurati, showing reduced troglobitic adaptations, assumes disparate and unsolved positions in the phylogenetic reconstructions. The molecular data suggest that a combination of vicariance and dispersal events, occurring from 180 to a few million years ago, combined to bring about the present distribution pattern of Mediterranean cirolanid isopods.

The PRIAMO study is a cross-sectional longitudinal observational study aimed at describing epidemiology and evolution of non-motor symptoms (NMS) in patients with different forms of parkinsonism recruited in 55 Italian centres and evaluated over 24 months. In this paper, we are reporting prevalence and clinical characteristics of NMS in patients with atypical and secondary parkinsonism. Out of 1307 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of parkinsonism, 83 patients had vascular parkinsonism (VP), 34 had multiple system atrophy (MSA), 30 had progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 14 had dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and 11 had corticobasal degeneration (CBD). MSA and DLB had the highest number of NMS domains and symptoms, respectively. Gastrointestinal symptoms, pain, urinary problems and postural instability due to orthostatic hypotension were most frequent in MSA. Sleep disturbances were also common with a prevalence of approximately 70% in all diagnostic groups but CBD (36%). Psychiatric symptoms and attention and memory impairment were frequently observed in all diagnoses but were most prevalent among DLB patients, whereas the prevalence of skin and respiratory disorders was rather low in all forms, ranging between 10 and 30%. Atypical parkinsonism patients also reported a low QoL, with no significant differences among the different forms, whereas PD and VP patients had a better QoL.

To assess the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) and to study the relationship between anhedonia, depression and cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).The SHAPS (14 items) was translated into Italian and pre-tested in a pilot study. Two items evaluating physical anhedonia related to sexual issues were added. The Italian version of SHAPS was validated in 274 consecutive PD patients, divided into patients with major depression according to DSM-IV criteria (dPD) and patients without depression (nPD), and in healthy subjects. To test the feasibility of the instrument and to determine whether clinical data affect anhedonia, we also administered SHAPS to 1307 patients with different types of parkinsonism.The Italian SHAPS proved to be easy to understand as regards the question and answer modes. Intraclass coefficient for test-retest reliability was 0.65 for the total score. KR index was 0.61. ANOVA of the SHAPS total score revealed that scores were higher in dPD patients than in healthy controls and nPD (p0.05). In the 1307 patients with various types of parkinsonism, the SHAPS data showed that anhedonia was related to age, type of parkinsonism, apathy, depression and cognitive impairment. Anhedonia was correlated with frontal dysfunctions in supranuclear palsy and PD patients (r=-0.682 and -0.264 respectively, p0.05).The Italian version of the SHAPS is a reliable tool with which to assess anhedonia in patients with PD and other forms of parkinsonism.

Subterranean ecosystem studies using multivariate ordination and/or agglomerative classification statistical methods were reviewed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) between 1945 and 2006. Nearly 57,000 publications cited subterranean habitats or their associated biota in the SCI abstracts, however, multivariate statistics applied to strictly hypogean taxa occurred only in only 65 papers from 1990 onwards. Over 90% of the multivariate applications were devoted to morphometric or genetic studies of single species and to relationships between the environment and species assemblages. In terms of taxa and ecosystem types, stygobite and waterless cave studies featuring multivariate applications predominated, respectively. Only six different methods (Agglomerative Clustering, Canonical Correspondence Analysis, Correspondence Analysis, Discriminant Analysis, non-metric Multidimensional Scaling, Principal Component Analysis) were used among the .30 multivariate techniques available within the biostatistical toolbox. The retrieved set of publications (n5 65) was sorted in a simple table by keyword according to type of biota, habitat, research topic and multivariate method, while online biostatistical resources are appended. Further comments are made on the use of statistics in the biological sciences in general.

PRIAMO (PaRkinson And non Motor symptOms) is an epidemiology study aimed to assess the prevalence and incidence of non-motor symptoms (NMS) in patients with parkinsonism. PRIAMO consists of two phases: (1) a transversal assessment of the prevalence of NMS and (2) a longitudinal observation with two follow-up visits at 12 and 24 months to establish the incidence of NMS. A secondary aim of PRIAMO is to study the relationship between NMS and quality of life. Patients with parkinsonism have been evaluated in 59 Neurology Centres widely distributed throughout Italy. PRIAMO has analysed a total of 1307 patients (out of 1325 initially enrolled). We expect that PRIAMO will substantially help to quantify the burden of NMS in patients with parkinsonism.
