Abstract

The local fiber orientation is a micro-structural feature crucial for the mechanical properties of parts made from fiber reinforced polymers. It can be determined from micro-computed tomography data and subsequent quantitative analysis of the resulting 3D images. However, although being by nature non-destructive, this method so far has required to cut samples of a few millimeter edge length in order to achieve the high lateral resolution needed for the analysis. Here, we report on the successful combination of region-of-interest scanning with structure texture orientation analysis rendering the above described approach truly non-destructive. Several regions of interest in a large bearing part from the automotive industry made of fiber reinforced polymer are scanned and analyzed. Differences of these regions with respect to local fiber orientation are quantified. Moreover, consistency of the analysis based on scans at varying lateral resolutions is proved. Finally, measured and numerically simulated orientation tensors are compared for one of the regions.

Abstract

Olive fiber-reinforced polymer biocomposites were designed and produced within the framework of the LIFE-COMP0LIVE project (co-financed by the European Commission). These were designed according to a mathematical modelling previously developed based on the Design of Experiment methodology. The production and subsequent characterization of such biocomposites, either with recycled polypropylene or polylactic acid polymer matrices, demonstrated their suitability for some industrial applications (automotive and furniture). The results of the mechanical characterization showed that these materials meet the requirements of industrial applications. Abstract

Background: Dietary assessment is complex, and strategies to select the most appropriate dietary assessment tool (DAT) in epidemiological research are needed. The DIETary Assessment Tool NETwork (DIET@NET) aimed to establish expert consensus on Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) for dietary assessment using self-report. Methods: The BPGs were developed using the Delphi technique. Two Delphi rounds were conducted. A total of 131 experts were invited, and of these 65 accepted, with 48 completing Delphi round I and 51 completing Delphi round II. In all, a total of 57 experts from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia commented on the 47 suggested guidelines. Results: Forty-three guidelines were generated, grouped into the following four stages: Stage I. Define what is to be measured in terms of dietary intake (what? who? and when?); Stage II. Investigate different types of DATs; Stage III. Evaluate existing tools to select the most appropriate DAT by evaluating published validation studies; Stage IV. Think through the implementation of the chosen DAT and consider sources of potential biases. Conclusions: The Delphi technique consolidated expert views on best practice in assessing dietary intake. The BPGs provide a valuable guide for health researchers to choose the most appropriate dietary assessment method for their studies. Abstract

Objective: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm which can automatically detect food items from images acquired by an egocentric wearable camera for dietary assessment.Design: To study human diet and lifestyle, large sets of egocentric images were acquired using a wearable device, called eButton, from free-living individuals. Three thousand nine hundred images containing real-world activities, which formed eButton data set 1, were manually selected from thirty subjects. eButton data set 2 contained 29 515 images acquired from a research participant in a week-long unrestricted recording. They included both food- and non-food-related real-life activities, such as dining at both home and restaurants, cooking, shopping, gardening, housekeeping chores, taking classes, gym exercise, etc. All images in these data sets were classified as food/non-food images based on their tags generated by a convolutional neural network.Results: A cross data-set test was conducted on eButton data set 1. The overall accuracy of food detection was 91·5 and 86·4 %, respectively, when one-half of data set 1 was used for training and the other half for testing. For eButton data set 2, 74·0 % sensitivity and 87·0 % specificity were obtained if both 'food' and 'drink' were considered as food images. Alternatively, if only 'food' items were considered, the sensitivity and specificity reached 85·0 and 85·8 %, respectively.Conclusions: The AI technology can automatically detect foods from low-quality, wearable camera-acquired real-world egocentric images with reasonable accuracy, reducing both the burden of data processing and privacy concerns. Abstract

The relationship between the morphologies of different injection molded polypropylenes and their tensile properties measured at high strain rate were investigated. A threefold systematic analysis is proposed by establishing the following relationships: (i) processing‐morphology; (ii) processing‐mechanical properties; and (iii) morphology‐mechanical properties. Experimental techniques were used to assess the structural heterogeneity of the moldings, namely: polarized light microscopy (skin thickness), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (crystallinity, molecular orientation, and polymorphism of the skin layer), and differential scanning calorimetry (bulk crystallinity). High velocity tensile tests (1 m/s) were recorded by a high speed camera that runs 20k frames per second. The influence of multiple processing variables on the morphology and properties was studied adopting a structured statistical approach by means of two statistical tools: analysis of variance and response surface methodology. The most important molding variables and their interactions were identified. Straightforward relationships between the morphology and the tensile properties were established by fitting the experimental data to polynomial equations, using a least‐square minimization procedure. The melt temperature was identified as the most significant variable for the development of the morphologies and the mechanical response of the moldings. The skin thickness, its crystallinity and molecular orientation (flow direction) influence, to a certain degree, the tensile properties of the materials. POLYM. ENG. Abstract

Undergraduate Ss were studied in a Prisoner's Dilemma game involving nine levels of cooperation by the Other. It was found that at the conclusion of 100 trials, Ss were quite accurate in their detection of the Other's overall level of cooperation, as well as the Other's reciprocation of S's noncooperative choices. On the other hand, it was found that the detection of the Other's reciprocation of S's cooperative choices was frequently inaccurate. With regard to the latter, S's own reciprocation of the Other's cooperative choices was found to be significantly related to S's perception of the Other's strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
