During the Atlantic References and Convection (ARC) ship campaign with the reference MSM114/2, which took place in early 2023, the German research vessel Maria S. Merian travelled from Mindelo, Cape Verde, to Punta Arenas, Chile. One of the main objectives of ARC was to obtain vertically resolved cross sections of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). To this end, we crossed the ITCZ three times in the meridional direction. We present the atmospheric and oceanographic measurements collected during ARC in a standardized way to facilitate working with data from different instruments and to make the data easily accessible. This approach is not limited to ARC but could serve as a prototype for future (and past) ship campaigns. We present data from the integrated ship sensors (DShip), a Humidity and Temperature Profiler (HATPRO), a Ceilometer, aerosol instruments (DustTrak, Microtops, and Calitoo), radiosondes, Uncrewed Aircaft Vehicles (UAV), and Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) profiles of the upper ocean. We distinguish temporal continuous data (DShip, HATPRO, Ceilometer, DustTrak) from point measurements (radiosondes, UAVs, CTDs, Calitoo, Microtops). To illustrate the data sets provided, we present examples of measurements taken during the three crossings of the ITCZ and during a storm in the Roaring Forties in the South Atlantic at the end of the campaign. All data sets can be downloaded from Köhler et al. (2024a). An overview of all available data sets, including dois, can be found here: https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.966616. Physics - Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics - Abstract
One the major factors determining the development and evolution of atmospheric convection is the sea surface temperature and its variability. Results of this thesis show that state of atmospheric convection impacts the diurnal distribution of thermal energy in the upper ocean. Under calm and clear sky conditions a shallow warm layer of several meters depth develops on the surface of the ocean. This warm layer drives an anomalous flux from the ocean to the atmosphere. A novel Kelvin wave trajectory database based on satellite data is introduced in this study. The investigation of its data shows that substantial fraction of Kelvin waves is initiated as a result of interaction with another Kelvin wave. Two distinct categories are defined and analyzed: the two- and multiple Kelvin wave initiations, and a spin off initiation. Results show that primary forcing of such waves are high diurnal cycle and/or increased wind speed and latent heat flux at the ocean surface. Variability of the ocean surface and subsurface along Kelvin wave trajectories over Indian Ocean is investigated: wind speed and latent heat flux increase and a sea surface temperature anomaly decreases during a wave passage. It is also shown that Kelvin waves are longitude-diurnal cycle phase locked over the Maritime Continent. This cycle phase locking is such that it agrees with mean, local diurnal cycle of convection in the atmosphere. The strength of the longitude-diurnal cycle phase locking differs between non-blocked Kelvin waves, which make successful transition over the Maritime Continent, and blocked waves that terminate within it. The distance between the islands of Sumatra and Borneo agrees with the distance travelled by an average Kelvin wave in one day. This suggests that the Maritime Continent may act as a filter, favoring successful propagation waves, which are in phase with the local diurnal cycle of convection., Comment: PhD thesis, University of Warsaw

The paper presents research of the process of decontamination of chemical protection suits. The results of the research show the effectiveness of selected decontamination techniques. In experiments took into account the influence of the contaminant, the time of decontamination, the type of the decontamination agent and the use of mechanical support in removing the contaminant. The research has shown how to minimize the negative action of hazardous substances on protective clothing and show the problem of the possibility of secondary contamination. They demonstrate the impact of each factors on the quality of decontamination and showed that small changes in the process of decontamination significantly affect the safety of the rescuer. The key to effective decontamination is the synergy effect of the studied parameters. This approach will allow efficient and effective execution of the decontamination process, minimize the risk of contact between rescuers and the contaminant and prevent secondary contamination.

OCEAN-atmosphere interaction ,MESOSCALE eddies ,WATER masses ,REMOTE-sensing images ,METEOR showers ,METEORS - Abstract
The northwestern Tropical Atlantic Ocean is a turbulent region, filled with mesoscale eddies and large-scale currents. In this intense dynamical context, several water masses with thermohaline characteristics of different origins are advected, mixed, and stirred, at the surface and at depth. The EUREC4A-OA/ATOMIC experiment that took place in January and February 2020 was dedicated to assess the processes at play in this region, especially the interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere. For that, four oceanographic vessels and different autonomous platforms measured properties near the air-sea interface and acquired thousands of upper-ocean (400-2000 m) profiles. However, each device had its own observing capability, varying from deep measurements acquired during vessel stations to shipboard underway near-surface observations and measurements from autonomous and uncrewed systems (such as Saildrones). These observations were undertaken with a specific sampling strategy guided by near-real time satellite images and adapted every half day based on the process that was investigated. These processes were characterized by different spatio-temporal scales: from mesoscale eddies, with diameters exceeding 100 km, to submesoscale filaments of 1 km width. This article describes the data sets gathered from the different devices and how the data were calibrated and validated, in order to ensure an overall consistency, the platforms’ datasets are cross-validated using a hierarchy of instruments defined by their own specificity and calibration procedures. This has enabled the quantification of the uncertainty of the measured parameters when the different datasets are used together. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Case report. A 58-year-old woman was admitted to the Department of Internal Diseases due to resting dyspnoea, tachycardia and malaise. Her chest X-ray revealed inflammatory lesions, and empiric antibiotic therapy was initiated. Chest CT was then performed which showed lung tumours. During hospitalization, the patient suddenly developed cardiogenic shock induced by pericardial tamponade. The fluid from pericardium was subsequently collected. An histopathological examination of the fluid showed the presence of atypical cells. The patient then underwent bronchoscopy, the biopsy material of which revealed bronchial adenocarcinoma.

- Abstract
In this study, diurnal temperature range (DTR – defined as difference between daily maximum and minimum air temperature) in the northern part of Poland in relation to atmospheric circulation types by B. Osuchowska-Klein was investigated. To discover the most characteristic features of geographical distribution of DTR for all distinguished circulation patterns in selected months and the whole year data from 22 IMGW weather stations (from the 1971-1995 period) were used and presented on the maps., Vol 23 (2019) Baltic Coastal Zone, 5-20

The Bay of Bengal (BoB) plays a fundamental role in controlling the weather systems that make up the South Asian summer monsoon system. In particular, the southern BoB has cooler sea surface temperatures (SST) that influence ocean–atmosphere interaction and impact the monsoon. Compared to the southeastern BoB, the southwestern BoB is cooler, more saline, receives much less rain, and is influenced by the summer monsoon current (SMC). To examine the impact of these features on the monsoon, the BoB Boundary Layer Experiment (BoBBLE) was jointly undertaken by India and the United Kingdom during June–July 2016. Physical and biogeochemical observations were made using a conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) profiler, five ocean gliders, an Oceanscience Underway CTD (uCTD), a vertical microstructure profiler (VMP), two acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs), Argo floats, drifting buoys, meteorological sensors, and upper-air radiosonde balloons. The observations were made along a zonal section at 8°N between 85.3° and 89°E with a 10-day time series at 8°N, 89°E. This paper presents the new observed features of the southern BoB from the BoBBLE field program, supported by satellite data. Key results from the BoBBLE field campaign show the Sri Lanka dome and the SMC in different stages of their seasonal evolution and two freshening events during which salinity decreased in the upper layer, leading to the formation of thick barrier layers. BoBBLE observations were taken during a suppressed phase of the intraseasonal oscillation; they captured in detail the warming of the ocean mixed layer and the preconditioning of the atmosphere to convection.

The objective of the study is to present interrelationship between the linguistic behaviour of interlocutors and their social roles. In the collected material speech acts were distinguished and analysed in a comprehensive fashion. The research material consisted of authentic conversations between a superior and a subordinate. At the beginning, basic terminology relevant for the study was presented: organisation culture, communication in the company (vertical and horizontal), asymmetry of communication, identity and asymmetry. In the study, I was looking for the answer to the following questions: What are the characteristics of the interlocutors’ linguistic behaviour? Does communication between the superior and the subordinate aim at the asymmetry of roles, or look in the direction of their symmetry? What acts of speech are used to convey the interlocutors’ social roles? What is the role of presuppositions, contained in the interlocutors’ utterances, in the positive conclusion of a dialogue? How are social ties and interpersonal community formed with the use of language and nonverbal means? The theoretical basis of the study is made by Austin and Searle's theory of speech acts, Wierzbicka’s theory of speech genres, and Bakhtin’s theory of speech genres, as well as A. Awdiejew’s theory of communicative grammar. The study consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. Particular chapters refer to the characteristics of basic terms used in the paper. They contain an analysis of reference books. Then, a classification of individual speech acts in the reference books is discussed. In the empirical part of the study, an analysis of individual speech acts appearing in the interlocutors’ utterances is conducted. The characteristics of the communication loop and the nature of adjacency pairs was taken into account. In the analysis, the semantic stream of research was considered, including the methods of explicating the meaning of language expressions introduced and applied by Anna Wierzbicka. A precise conceptual apparatus and nature of research process have a particularly significant meaning both for the analysis itself and for presenting its results, which is due to the size of the researched material and previous unpredictability of specific problems, which the researcher is always confronted with while dealing with the empirical material. The study examines the course of communication between the superior and the subordinate, it does not focus, however, on the purely descriptive approach, but makes an effort to explain the role of the communication participants, while taking into consideration the problems of identity and communication asymmetry in the context of organization culture, getting an insight into organization culture from a linguistic perspective. Research material consists of 6 conversations between the superior and the subordinate, recorded during a participative observation. The author’s aim was to obtain the exact verbal transcript of the interaction participants’ behaviour. The particulars of the dialogue participants were changed in order to ensure their anonymity and prevent the identification of the individuals taking part in the research. In the material, only the institution where the research was conducted is indicated (corporation, bank, school, etc.) In the first chapter of the study, the issue of communicating within an organisation is discussed, while specifying models of verbal communication, forms of communication within an organisation. A key concept is the concept of organisation culture. In the context of the definition of organisation culture, the role of effective communication in the process of organisation culture formation is discussed. Another issue is asymmetric and symmetric communication. In chapter II, divisions of speech acts are characterised, in search of a classification which would specify a finite collection of illocution types and determine their internal structure. It includes an overview of J.L.Austin and J.R Searle’s concept of speech acts, D. Wunderlich’s classification of speech acts, R. Grzegorczykowa’s classification of speech acts, Paul Grice's theory of conversational implicatures, and the typology of speech acts based on A. Awdiejew’s and E. Laskowska’s classification. The third chapter contains the analysis of speech acts as part of communication between a superior and a subordinate while taking into consideration the following division of speech acts: information and verification speech acts, emotive speech acts and action speech acts. With regard to information and verification speech acts, announcement, inquiry, modal, and modal and emotive acts were discussed. The conclusion includes the summary of the analysis results. The study is directed primarily to linguists. If it attracts the attention of word practitioners, as well as superiors and subordinates, my objective will be fully achieved.
