1. Electoral Agitation Data Set: The Use Case of the Polish Election

Abstract

The popularity of social media makes politicians use it for political advertisement. Therefore, social media is full of electoral agitation (electioneering), especially during the election campaigns. The election administration cannot track the spread and quantity of messages that count as agitation under the election code. It addresses a crucial problem, while also uncovering a niche that has not been effectively targeted so far. Hence, we present the first publicly open data set for detecting electoral agitation in the Polish language. It contains 6,112 human-annotated tweets tagged with four legally conditioned categories. We achieved a 0.66 inter-annotator agreement (Cohen's kappa score). An additional annotator resolved the mismatches between the first two improving the consistency and complexity of the annotation process. The newly created data set was used to fine-tune a Polish Language Model called HerBERT (achieving a 68% F1 score). 2. Classical Out-of-Distribution Detection Methods Benchmark in Text Classification Tasks

Abstract

State-of-the-art models can perform well in controlled environments, but they often struggle when presented with out-of-distribution (OOD) examples, making OOD detection a critical component of NLP systems. In this paper, we focus on highlighting the limitations of existing approaches to OOD detection in NLP. Specifically, we evaluated eight OOD detection methods that are easily integrable into existing NLP systems and require no additional OOD data or model modifications. One of our contributions is providing a well-structured research environment that allows for full reproducibility of the results. Additionally, our analysis shows that existing OOD detection methods for NLP tasks are not yet sufficiently sensitive to capture all samples characterized by various types of distributional shifts. Particularly challenging testing scenarios arise in cases of background shift and randomly shuffled word order within in domain texts. 3. Domain-Agnostic Neural Architecture for Class Incremental Continual Learning in Document Processing Platform

Abstract

Production deployments in complex systems require ML architectures to be highly efficient and usable against multiple tasks. Particularly demanding are classification problems in which data arrives in a streaming fashion and each class is presented separately. Recent methods with stochastic gradient learning have been shown to struggle in such setups or have limitations like memory buffers, and being restricted to specific domains that disable its usage in real-world scenarios. For this reason, we present a fully differentiable architecture based on the Mixture of Experts model, that enables the training of high-performance classifiers when examples from each class are presented separately. We conducted exhaustive experiments that proved its applicability in various domains and ability to learn online in production environments. 8. Manifolds.jl: An Extensible Julia Framework for Data Analysis on Manifolds

Abstract

We present the Julia package Manifolds.jl, providing a fast and easy-to-use library of Riemannian manifolds and Lie groups. This package enables working with data defined on a Riemannian manifold, such as the circle, the sphere, symmetric positive definite matrices, or one of the models for hyperbolic spaces. We introduce a common interface, available in ManifoldsBase.jl, with which new manifolds, applications, and algorithms can be implemented. We demonstrate the utility of Manifolds.jl using B\'ezier splines, an optimization task on manifolds, and principal component analysis on nonlinear data. In a benchmark, Manifolds.jl outperforms all comparable packages for low-dimensional manifolds in speed; over Python and Matlab packages, the improvement is often several orders of magnitude, while over C/C++ packages, the improvement is two-fold. For high-dimensional manifolds, it outperforms all packages except for Tensorflow-Riemopt, which is specifically tailored for high-dimensional manifolds.

Abstract

Background. Clostridioides difficile infection is the most common diarrheal disease associated with antibiotic use. Treatment includes fidaxomicin, vancomycin, metronidazole, rifaximin, fecal flora transplants, and bezlotoxumab. There are numerous reports of the potential beneficial effects of using probiotics in Clostridioides difficile infection. Objectives. This study aimed to analyze the effects of the use of probiotics on patients with Clostridioides difficile infection who were hospitalized at the University Clinical Hospital in Wroclaw from 2016 to 2018. Material and methods. The study was conducted by analyzing the medical records of patients treated from 2016 to the end of 2018 at the University Clinical Hospital in Wroclaw. We examined the frequency of use of probiotics in Clostridioides difficile infection, differences in the use of probiotics by year of hospitalization, mortality among patients taking probiotics and not receiving this type of treatment, length of hospitalization by probiotic use, and the relationship between the gender of patients and the use of probiotics. Results. 313 patients were enrolled in the study, out of 319 patients total. Almost half of the patients (45.54%) received no probiotic during hospitalization. The most commonly administered probiotics were preparations containing Saccharomyces boulardii, which were received by 24.2% of patients. The use of probiotics did not affect mortality in Clostridioides difficile infection. Patients receiving probiotics were hospitalized longer. There was no significant statistical difference in probiotic use by patient gender. Conclusions. Probiotic use did not reduce the risk of death or shorten the length of hospitalization of patients with Clostridioides difficile infection [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This work extends the dynamic programming approach to calculation of an elastic metric between two curves to finding paths in pairs of graph drawings that are closest under this metric. The new algorithm effectively solves this problem when all paths between two given nodes in one of these graphs have the same length. It is then applied to the problem of pattern recognition constrained by a superpixel segmentation. Segmentations of test images, obtained without statistical modeling given two shape endpoints, have good accuracy.

25. Protocol: a randomized parallel-group study of women after hallux valgus correction surgery to compare the effects of "core foot system" training vs. traditional rehabilitation methods.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the effects of Core Foot System muscle training vs. traditional rehabilitation methods in female patients after a hallux valgus correction surgery. Methods: The project will involve 60 women who have undergone a Scarf osteotomy to correct the deformity. Participants will be divided into a control and experimental group. The experimental group will follow the Core Foot System protocol, whereas the control group will perform standard lower-limb exercises. Outcome measures will be collected twice: before the intervention and after eight weeks. Gait will be assessed using the Zebris FDM-2 platform, measuring ground reaction forces during walking. Results: The effects of the exercises on the cross-sectional area of the abductor hallucis muscle and the flexor digitorum brevis muscle will be measured. Foot architecture and arch height will be measured using a podoscope. In addition, the participants will complete the Short Form Health Survey and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society questionnaires. Conclusions: The study is expected to provide evidence of the effectiveness of foot muscle training using the protocol. The findings may lead to an improved protocol of rehabilitation in patients after a correction surgery that may result in improved gait parameters and quality of daily life. In the future, an improved therapeutic method should make it possible to boost the effectiveness of physiotherapy in patients after a corrective surgery in the forefoot area. Abstract

Ved å se tilbake i tid, kan det bli oppdaget at vedlikehold var noe unødvendig som måtte blitt gjennomført bare da noe ikke fungerte. Vedlikehold har blitt utviklet gjennom mange tiår og ble stadig viktigere over tid. I dag har, vedlikehold har fått så mye oppmerksomhet slik at den norske regjeringen ser på det som verdiskapende aktivitet. Regjeringen ønsker at norske bedrifter skal investere mer i vedlikehold, opplæring av personell for å øke kompetansenivå, og digitalisering som en konsept av Industri 4.0 som har blitt populær i siste tiår. Vedlikeholdsstyring har gått gjennom en metamorfose, fra periodisk overhaling til tilstandsbasert vedlikehold, hvor risikobasert vedlikehold har også fått mye oppmerksomhet som en del av vedlikeholdsstyring prosesser. Utstyrs pålitelighet, bortsett fra produksjon og kostnader, har også veldig mye påvirkning på helse, miljø og sikkerhet (HMS) som er viktige områder. Oljeindustrien forstod at sikkerhets-kritisk utstyr er viktig; derfor har, konsekvensklassifisering som vedlikeholdsprosess har blitt utviklet som en del av risikobasert vedlikeholdsstyring i standarden NORSOK Z-008. En av fordelene med konsekvensklassifisering er identifikasjon av utsyr som har store konsekvenser for HMS, produksjon og kostnader ved funksjonell svikt. Det er også sett på som verktøy som kan forbedre RCM analyse, som er et naturlig steg videre for utsyr med store konsekvenser. Til tross for at konsekvensklassifisering er en del av standarden som er ment til å bli brukt i offshore oljeindustri, landbaserte bedrifter har anerkjent dets potensiale. Elkem har implementert dette som en del av sitt Elkem Business System (EBS) og Maintenance in Business (MIB) prosjekter. Hydro Aluminium er et av organisasjoner som velger å følge Elkem sine spor. Denne masteroppgaven fokuserer på metodologien av konsekvensklassifisering for landbasert industri, hva slags nytte får RCM av dette og hvordan Industri 4.0 passer inn passer inn i dette bilde. Identifisert metodologi er brukt for å gjennomføre en case fra Hydro Aluminium Sunndal, og resultatene blir brukt til å beskrive nytte og utfordringer knyttet til konsekvensklassifisering. Over the course of history, maintenance has appeared to be an unplanned action that should only be performed when something was not functioning correctly. Maintenance has evolved throughout decades, becoming increasingly important over time. Finally, maintenance has received so much attention that it is seen as one of main value drivers by the Norwegian government. The government urges Norwegian industry to invest in maintenance, training of personnel and digitalization as the concept of Industry 4.0 has emerged in the last decade. Maintenance management has undergone metamorphosis, from periodic overhauls to condition based maintenance. Risk-based maintenance has received its own share of attention as part of the maintenance management process. Reliability of equipment does not only affect production and costs of the organization; health, safety and environment (HSE) as well. The Petroleum industry has paid particular attention to the importance of safety-critical equipment and therefore the consequence classification process has been developed as part of risk-based maintenance in NORSOK Z-008 standard. One of the benefits of performing consequence classification is identification of equipment which would result in major consequences if it were to experience functional failure. This could ultimately affect HSE, Production, and other additional costs aside from those related to loss in production. It is also considered as a tool that can improve Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) even further. Despite consequence classification being part of the standard meant to be used by the oil and gas industry, land-based industry has also recognized its potential. Elkem has implemented it as part of their Elkem Business System (EBS) and Maintenance in Business (MIB). Hydro Aluminium is one of the organizations that has also chosen to follow Elkem’s lead in consequence classification. The master thesis focuses on methodology of performing consequence classification for land-based industry, how RCM will benefit from it, and how Industry 4.0 complements this. Identified methodology is used on a case provided by Hydro Aluminium Sunndal, where results are used to identify and describe benefits and challenges related to consequence classification.

38. Analysis of factors affecting the length of hospitalization of patients with Clostridioides difficileinfection: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Background: Clostridioides difficileinfection (CDI) is an infectious disease caused by the gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium C. difficile. The vulnerable populations for CDI include the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and hospitalized patients, especially those undergoing antimicrobial therapy, which is a significant risk factor for this infection. Due to its complications and increased resistance to treatment, CDI often leads to longer hospital stays. This study aimed to determine the average length of hospital stay (LOS) of Polish patients with CDI and to identify factors affecting the LOS of infected patients. Methods: The study analyzed medical records of adult patients treated with CDI in one of the biggest clinical hospitals in Poland between 2016–2018. Information encompassed the patient's age, LOS results of selected laboratory tests, number of antibiotics used, nutritional status based on Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS 2002), year of hospitalization, presence of diarrhea on admission, systemic infections, additional conditions, and undergone therapies. The systematic collection of these variables forms the foundation for a comprehensive analysis of factors influencing the length of stay. Results: In the study period, 319 patients with CDI were hospitalized, with a median LOS of 24 days (min–max = 2–344 days). The average LOS was 4.74 days in 2016 (median = 28 days), 4.27 days in 2017 (median = 24 days), and 4.25 days in 2018 (median = 23 days). There was a weak negative correlation (Rho = -0.235, p< 0.001) between albumin level and LOS and a weak positive correlation between NRS and LOS (Rho = 0.219, p< 0.001). Patients admitted with diarrhea, a history of stroke or pneumonia, those taking certain antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, colistin), and those using proton pump inhibitors, exhibited longer hospitalizations (all p< 0.001) or unfortunately died (p= 0.008). None of the individual predictors such as albumin level, Nutritional Risk Screen, pneumonia, stroke, and age showed a statistically significant relationship with the LOS (p> 0.05). However, the multivariate regression model explained a substantial portion of the variance in hospitalization length, with an R-squared value of 0.844. Conclusions: Hospitalization of a patient with CDI is long. Low albumin levels and increased risk of malnutrition were observed in longer hospitalized patients. Longer hospitalized patients had pneumonia, stroke, or surgery, and were admitted for a reason other than CDI.

Background: Protein carbonylation is reported in atherosclerosis, but its predictive value is unknown., Aims: We evaluated plasma carbonylated protein (PC) levels in association with clinical outcomes in coronary artery disease (CAD) in long-term follow-up., Methods: In patients with advanced stable CAD, we assessed plasma PC content along with fibrin clot properties, i.e., permeability (Ks) and clot lysis time, and its determinants: plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor. We recorded a composite of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, systemic embolism, and cardiovascular death during a follow-up of 8.3 (1.8) years., Results: The analysis involved 178 patients aged 64.0 (57.0-70.0) years. The baseline PC content was 2.9 (2.2-3.7) nmol/mg protein and was elevated above the reference value obtained for a control group (2.03 nmol/mg protein) in 82.6% of patients. In linear regression models, high PC adjusted for age was associated with lower Ks, longer clot lysis time, and elevated PAI-1 and thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor. Baseline PC was 48% higher in patients with the composite endpoint (n = 67, 37.6%) compared with others (P <0.001). Patients with PC in the highest quartile (3.7-5.1 nmol/mg protein) were more likely to develop the composite endpoint compared to the lowest quartile (hazard ratio [HR] 4.9; 95% confidence interval, 2.1-11.3; P <0.001)., Conclusions: This is the first study showing that in CAD the extent of protein carbonylation, in part via its antifibrinolytic effects, predisposes to cardiovascular events in long-term follow-up, highlighting the role of persistent oxidative protein modifications in atherosclerotic vascular disease.
