Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a teaching and learning approach that is based on the principles that underpin sustainability and applies to all levels of education. However, there is a scarcity of research on the integration of curricula with ESD. In this study, secondary school curricula in Germany (Bavaria) (geography, nature and technology) and secondary school curricula in Turkey (social studies, sciences) were compared in terms of learning outcomes and learning areas to the principles of sustainable development (social-environmental-economic). Attempts have been made to shed light on how ESD is reflected in the curricula of Turkey and Germany, as well as how the approach of ESD directs the education curricula. According to the findings of the study, the learning outcomes and learning areas of the curricula of Turkey and Germany are related to the principles of sustainable development, and learning outcomes related to SD dimensions are given more place in the upper grades. Turkey’s social studies curriculum is more related to SD’s social dimension principles; the science curriculum is more related to SD’s environmental dimension principles; and Germany’s geography, nature and technology curricula are more related to SD’s environmental dimension principles. The number of learning outcomes related to the economic dimension principles of SD in both countries’ curricula has been determined to be very low. Especially in Germany’s curricula, unlike Turkey’s curricula, it has been determined that students offer solutions to existing environmental-social-economic problems for sustainability in the context of problem-solving skills and learning outcomes that include case study activities are included.

The islets of Langerhans, responsible for regulating blood glucose in vertebrates, are clusters of endocrine cells distributed throughout the exocrine pancreas. The spatial architecture of the different cell types within the islets controls cell-cell communication and impacts their ability to collectively regulate glucose. Islets rely on a range of chemotactic and adhesive cues to establish and manage intercellular relationships. Growing evidence indicates that axon guidance molecules such as Slit-Robo, Semaphorin-Neuropilin, Ephrin-Eph, and Netrins, influence endocrine progenitors’ cell migration to establish correct architecture during islet morphogenesis, as well as directly regulating physical cell-cell communication in the mature islet to coordinate hormone secretion. In this mini-review, we discuss what is known and not yet known about how axon guidance molecules contribute to islet morphogenesis and function.

Well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC), including papillary, follicular, and Hurthle-cell types, is characterized by a slow course and usually remain localized to the thyroid. However, a minority of these cases develop distant metastases with the most common sites being lungs, bones, and lymph nodes. Liver metastases of WDTC are rare and are usually found along with other distant metastases sites and in a multiple or diffuse pattern of spread. The recognition of distant metastasis in WDTC has a significant impact on the treatment and prognosis. However, because of their low incidence and awareness, distant metastases are often diagnosed late. Herein, we describe a case of a 71 years old woman who during routine surveillance of a follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer (FV-PTC), 5 years after being treated for her primary thyroid tumor, was found to have a single liver metastasis and underwent liver segmental resection. This case highlights the importance of maintaining vigilant surveillance of patients with WDTC, and illustrates the possibility of unique metastasis at unexpected sites. Further studies are needed to understand the organ tropism of some WDTC leading to distant metastases development and to better prediction of an aggressive course.

The spatial architecture of the islets of Langerhans is hypothesized to facilitate synchronized insulin secretion among β cells, yet testing this in vivo in the intact pancreas is challenging. Robo βKO mice, in which the genes Robo1 and Robo2 are deleted selectively in β cells, provide a unique model of altered islet spatial architecture without loss of β cell differentiation or islet damage from diabetes. Combining Robo βKO mice with intravital microscopy, we show here that Robo βKO islets have reduced synchronized intra-islet Ca2+ oscillations among β cells in vivo. We provide evidence that this loss is not due to a β cell-intrinsic function of Robo, mis-expression or mis-localization of Cx36 gap junctions, or changes in islet vascularization or innervation, suggesting that the islet architecture itself is required for synchronized Ca2+ oscillations. These results have implications for understanding structure-function relationships in the islets during progression to diabetes as well as engineering islets from stem cells.

BackgroundHealth organizations and patients interact over different communication channels and are harnessing digital communications for this purpose. Assisting health organizations to improve, adapt, and introduce new patient–health care practitioner communication channels (such as patient portals, mobile apps, and text messaging) enhances health care services access. ObjectiveThis retrospective data study aims to assist health care administrators and policy makers to improve and personalize communication between patients and health care professionals by expanding the capabilities of current communication channels and introducing new ones. Our main hypothesis is that patient follow-up and clinical outcomes are influenced by their preferred communication channels with the health care organization. MethodsThis study analyzes data stored in electronic medical records and logs documenting access to various communication channels between patients and a health organization (Clalit Health Services, Israel). Data were collected between 2008 and 2016 from records of 311,168 patients diagnosed with diabetes, aged 21 years and over, members of Clalit at least since 2007, and still alive in 2016. The analysis consisted of characterizing the use profiles of communication channels over time and used clustering for discretization purposes and patient profile building and then a hierarchical clustering and heatmaps to visualize the different communication profiles. ResultsA total of 13 profiles of patients were identified and characterized. We have shown how the communication channels provided by the health organization influence the communication behavior of patients. We observed how different patients respond differently to technological means of communication and change or don’t change their communication patterns with the health care organization based on the communication channels available to them. ConclusionsIdentifying the channels of communication within the health organization and which are preferred by each patient creates an opportunity to convey messages adapted to the patient in the most appropriate way. The greater the likelihood that the therapeutic message is received by the patient, the greater the patient's response and proactiveness to the treatment will be. Intelligent biorefinery design that addresses both the composition of the biomass feedstock as well as fermentation microorganisms could benefit from dedicated tools for computational simulation and computer-assisted optimization. Here we present the BioLego Vn2.0 framework, based on Microsoft Azure Cloud, which supports large-scale simulations of biomass serial fermentation processes by two different organisms. BioLego enables the simultaneous analysis of multiple fermentation scenarios and the comparison of fermentation potential of multiple feedstock compositions. Thanks to the effective use of cloud computing it further allows resource intensive analysis and exploration of media and organism modifications. We use BioLego to obtain biological and validation results, including (1) exploratory search for the optimal utilization of corn biomasses-corn cobs, corn fiber and corn stover-in fermentation biorefineries; (2) analysis of the possible effects of changes in the composition of K. alvarezi biomass on the ethanol production yield in an anaerobic two-step process (S. cerevisiae followed by E. coli); (3) analysis of the impact, on the estimated ethanol production yield, of knocking out single organism reactions either in one or in both organisms in an anaerobic two-step fermentation process of Ulva sp. into ethanol (S. cerevisiae followed by E. coli); and (4) comparison of several experimentally measured ethanol fermentation rates with the predictions of BioLego.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been implicated in a wide variety of biological activities, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases, and have been proposed to serve as potential biomarkers of disease in human patients and animal models. However, characterization of EV populations is often performed using methods that do not account for the heterogeneity of EV populations and require comparatively large sample sizes to facilitate analysis. Here, we describe an imaging-based method that allows for the multiplexed characterization of EV populations at the single EV level following centrifugation of EV populations directly onto cover slips, allowing comprehensive analysis of EV populations with relatively small samples. We observe that canonical EV markers are present on subsets of EVs which differ substantially in a producer cell and cargo specific fashion, including differences in EVs containing different HIV-1 proteins previously reported to be incorporated into pathogenic EVs. We also describe a lectin binding assay to interrogate EVs based on their glycan content, which we observe to change in response to pharmacological modulation of secretory autophagy pathways. These studies collectively reveal that a multiplexed analysis of EV populations using fluorescent microscopy can reveal differences in specific EV populations that may be used to understand the biogenesis of specific EV populations and/or to interrogate small subsets of EVs of interest within larger EV populations in biological samples.

The Gulf of Aqaba is an oligotrophic marine system with oxygen-rich water column and organic carbon-poor sediments (≤0.6% at sites that are not influenced by anthropogenic impact). Aeolian dust deposition from the Arabian, Sinai, and Sahara Deserts is an important source of sediment, especially at the deep-water sites of the Gulf, which are less affected by sediment transport from the Arava Desert during seasonal flash floods. Microbial sulfate reduction in sediments is inferred from the presence of pyrite (although at relatively low concentrations), the presence of sulfide oxidation intermediates, and by the sulfur isotopic composition of sulfate and solid-phase sulfides. Saharan dust is characterized by high amounts of iron minerals such as hematite and goethite. We demonstrated, that the resulting high sedimentary content of reactive iron(III) (hydr)oxides, originating from this aeolian dry deposition of desert dust, leads to fast re-oxidation of hydrogen sulfide produced during microbial sulfate reduction and limits preservation of reduced sulfur in the form of pyrite. We conclude that at these sites the sedimentary sulfur cycle may be defined as cryptic.

Objectives. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory demyelinating disorder that is often preceded by infection or recent vaccination. Encephalopathy and focal neurological deficits are usually manifest several weeks after a prodromal illness with rapidly progressive neurologic decline. ADEM is most commonly seen in children and young adults, in which prognosis is favorable, but very few cases have been reported of older adults with ADEM and thus their clinical course is unknown. Methods. Here we present a case of ADEM in a middle-aged adult that recovered well after treatment. Results. A 62-year-old man presented with encephalopathy and rapid neurological decline following a gastrointestinal illness. A brain MRI revealed extensive supratentorial white matter hyperintensities consistent with ADEM and thus he was started on high dose intravenous methylprednisolone. He underwent a brain biopsy showing widespread white matter inflammation secondary to demyelination. At discharge, his neurological exam had significantly improved with continued steroid treatment and four months later, he was able to perform his ADLs. Conclusions. This case of ADEM in a middle-aged adult represents an excellent response to high dose steroid treatment with a remarkable neurological recovery. Thus it behooves one to treat suspected cases of ADEM in an adult patient aggressively, as outcome can be favorable.

Dysfunction or death of pancreatic β cells underlies both types of diabetes. This functional decline begins with β cell stress and de-differentiation. Current drugs for type 2 diabetes (T2D) lower blood glucose levels but they do not directly alleviate β cell stress nor prevent, let alone reverse, β cell de-differentiation. We show here that Urocortin 3 (Ucn3), a marker for mature β cells, is down-regulated in the early stages of T2D in mice and when β cells are stressed in vitro. Using an insulin expression-coupled lineage tracer, with Ucn3 as a reporter for the mature β cell state, we screen for factors that reverse β cell de-differentiation. We find that a small molecule inhibitor of TGFβ receptor I (Alk5) protects cells from the loss of key β cell transcription factors and restores a mature β cell identity even after exposure to prolonged and severe diabetes.

To develop a diffusion-tensor-imaging (DTI) protocol that is sensitive to the complex diffusion and perfusion properties of the healthy and malignant pancreas tissues.Twenty-eight healthy volunteers and nine patients with pancreatic-ductal-adenocacinoma (PDAC), were scanned at 3T with T2-weighted and DTI sequences. Healthy volunteers were also scanned with multi-b diffusion-weighted-imaging (DWI), whereas a standard clinical protocol complemented the PDAC patients' scans. Image processing at pixel resolution yielded parametric maps of three directional diffusion coefficients λ1, λ2, λ3, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and fractional anisotropy (FA), as well as a λ1-vector map, and a main diffusion-direction map.DTI measurements of healthy pancreatic tissue at b-values 0,500 s/mm² yielded: λ1 = (2.65±0.35)×10⁻³, λ2 = (1.87±0.22)×10⁻³, λ3 = (1.20±0.18)×10⁻³, ADC = (1.91±0.22)×10⁻³ (all in mm²/s units) and FA = 0.38±0.06. Analysis of multichannel recordings acquired with contemporary imaging or electrophysiological methods in neuroscience is often difficult due to the high dimensionality of the data and the low signal-to-noise ratio. We developed a method that addresses both problems by utilizing prior information about the temporal structure of the signal and the noise. This information is expressed mathematically in terms of sets of correlation matrices, a versatile approach that allows the treatment of a large class of signal and noise sources, including non-stationary sources or correlated signal and noise sources. We present a mathematical analysis of the algorithm, as well as application to an artificial dataset, and show that the algorithm is tolerant to inaccurate assumptions about the temporal structure of the data. We suggest that the algorithm, which we name temporally structured component analysis, can be highly beneficial to various multichannel measurement techniques, such as fMRI or optical imaging.

Abstract: Investigations of thickness induced percolation process in Pt ξ –Al2O3 nano-composites were carried out using grazing angle X-ray scattering. It is shown that the morphological characteristics of the nano-scaled Pt particles change significantly within the growth transversal direction. The initially non percolated two phases Pt ξ –Al2O3 nano-composites show a noteworthy tendency to a percolated morphology with a gradual transversal increase of Pt nano-particles'' average diameter in addition to the increase of the Pt nano-particles'' poly-dispersity. This transversal morphological evolution is followed by a percolation phenomenon of the Pt nano-particles for a thickness of about ∼119.5nm. This transversal morphological evolution seems to corroborate far too much with a columnar growth process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A new class of nano-photonics for possible χ 3(ω) applications have been synthesized by pulsed laser ablation and optically characterized. Compared to standard nano-composites exhibiting an exalted effective χ 3(ω) due to the enhancement of the local electric field, these Au–VO2 nano-composites display an additional reversibly tunable surface plasmon frequency under external temperature stimuli. This is due to the semi-conducting/metallic first order transition of the host VO2 matrix. The nano-gold surface plasmon wavelength shifts reversibly from 645 to 598nm when the Au–VO2 nano-composites temperature varies from 25 to 120°C. Even if the spectral shift is not extensively large, such a tunability is positively genuine. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been utilized in a variety of applications such as transistors and optoelectronic devices. However, in most SAMs the fluorinated groups could not be positioned in high proximity to the surface due to steric effects. This limitation hinders the direct analysis of the impact of the fluorination level on surface properties. Herein, fluorinated aromatic N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), with 1-5 fluorine atoms, were self-assembled on a gold substrate. These NHCs enabled the positioning of fluorinated groups in high proximity to the metal surface to identify the influence of the fluorination level on surface properties. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations identified that all fluorinated NHCs formed SAMs and adopted a flat-lying adsorption configuration while anchored to the metal surface via Au adatom. A higher fluorination level induced a stronger interaction of the fluorinated side groups with the Au surface. The stronger interaction and surface proximity of the fluorinated side groups deteriorated the overall binding energy of the NHC due to the less-optimized adsorption geometry of the carbene carbon. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements revealed that fluorinated NHC monolayers lowered the surface work function by up to 1 eV and induced an increase of 15-20° in the water contact angle. The impact on surface properties did not vary according to the fluorination level of NHCs, and similar values were measured for NHC with 1-5 fluorine atoms. It is therefore identified that dominant adsorbate-substrate interactions between the fluorinated side groups and the Au surface quenched the distinct impact of the fluorination level on surface functionality.
