Abstract

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is expected to be a prominent component of the sixth generation (6G) to accomplish intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Autonomous vehicles relying only on onboard sensors cannot bypass the limitations of safety and reliability. Thus, integrated sensing and communication is proposed as an effective way to achieve high situational- and self-awareness levels, enabling V2X to perceive the physical world and adjust its behaviour to emergencies. Secure navigation through the Global Positioning System (GPS) is essential in ITS for safe operation. Nevertheless, due to the lack of encryption and authentication mechanisms of civil GPS receivers, spoofers can easily replicate satellite signals by launching GPS spoofing attacks to deceive the vehicle and manipulate navigation data. In addition, due to its shared nature, V2X links are prone to jamming attacks which might endanger vehicular safety. This paper proposes a method to jointly detect GPS spoofing and jamming attacks in a V2X network. 21. Comparing the vibrational behavior of e-kick scooters and e-bikes: Evidence from Italy

Abstract

E-kick scooters are currently among the most popular emerging electric-powered personal micro-mobility vehicles (e-PMVs), and have recently been equated to e-bikes. However, even if the dynamic behavior of e-bikes is well studied, much less has been done to understand the behavior of e-kick scooters. Furthermore, comparisons between the two vehicles have rarely been investigated and only based on mechanical models. This study addresses this gap by proposing a novel framework that evaluates the vibrational behaviors of both vehicles when driven by different users and exposed to the pavement irregularities, using both real and simulated data. The experimental data are collected equipping an e-kick scooter and an e-bike with inertial measurement units (IMUs), and then processed by the ISO 2631–1 method to obtain an objective evaluation of the comfort. Next, the experimental data are expanded to include uncertainty applying a Monte Carlo simulation based on a two-layer feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN). Afterwards, several statistical analyses are performed to understand the key factors affecting the vibrational magnitude (and their extent) for each vehicle. This framework was tested in an Italian city (Brescia) along urban paths with five different pavement surfaces. The results showed that the e-kick scooter appears to be globally more solicited than the e-bike in terms of vibrational magnitude. Moreover, the pavement surface, sensor position, user gender, user height, and travel speed are identified as crucial factors explaining the vibrational magnitude for both vehicles. The overall findings challenge the recent European regulations that equated e-kick scooters with bikes. These findings can assist public administrations in planning the urban circulation of e-bikes and e-kick scooters, and suggest that manufacturers incorporate shock absorbers into e-kick scooter designs to enhance rider comfort.

34. Increased expression of neutrophil CD15 correlates with the severity of anterior ocular surface damage in type II diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Background Diabetes mellitus is associated with increased risk of ocular surface diseases in elderly. We consider neutrophil CD15 as a potential marker of ocular surface damage in type II diabetes mellitus patientsAim We aimed to evaluate expression of neutrophil CD15 and correlate it with results of conjunctival impression cytology and routine objective anterior ocular surface tests (TMH, NIBUT, LLT, MGD) in T2DM patients.Materials and methods We prospectively enrolled sixty type II diabetes mellitus patients (120 eyes) into a study group. The control group included forty (80 eyes) age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. All patients underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examination, and tear meniscus height test (TMH), noninvasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), lipid layer thickness measurement (LLT), Meibomian gland dysfunction evaluation (MGD), conjunctival impression cytology (CIC) and expression of CD15.Results Abnormal Nelson's grades of squamous metaplasia (grades 2 and 3) were observed in 50% (60 eyes) of the study group, and 13.8 (11 eyes) of the control group. Fifteen patients with type II diabetes mellitus suffered from grade 3 squamous metaplasia. Nelson's grades of squamous metaplasia have shown a positive correlation with the level of CD15 expression either in the study and control groups (rs = 0.628, p = <0.0001; rs = 0.746, p< 0.0001; respectively).Conclusions The research shows significantly reduced values of routine objective ocular tests in type II diabetes mellitus patients in comparison to healthy participants older than 60 y.o. Increased CD15 in the peripheral blood is associated with the development of squamous metaplasia and may be used to evaluate the severity of ocular surface damage in type II diabetes mellitus patients.

Abstract

America is undergoing a reckoning as the pain, suffering and setbacks caused by years of systemic racism is coming into full view. This heightened awareness around racism, sparked by death and injustice, must result in the development of real pathways to eliminate systemic racism, or it will be a lost opportunity for our generation to do our part in--to paraphrase Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.--bending the long arc of the moral universe toward justice. Higher education, like all other institutions in society, must do its share of bending the arc. Drawing from her experience as a scientist, professor and administrator, author Gilda A. Barabino believes there are a number of ways in which colleges and universities can advance and improve the lives of all students--and especially students of color. Even though higher education institutions are facing significant operational and financial challenges created by the COVID pandemic, nonetheless they must take action today to ensure that they are moving beyond words and demonstrations and taking real action to ensure that equity, diversity and opportunity exists and benefits young people of color--not only within their quads, residence halls and classrooms--but in the larger world as well.

46. Dry eye disease pathogenesis and clinical signs: searching for correspondence in the clinical practice.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Ocular surface alterations causing dry eye disease (DED) can be described as a vicious circle consisting of different consecutive stages. Among the factors involved, the ocular surface immune-inflammatory response has been established as a key player in the pathogenesis of the vicious circle of DED. Thus, the prompt recognition of the disruption of the immunoregulatory mechanisms is crucial for properly managing the ocular surface alterations. To increase awareness and knowledge of the identification and clinical interpretation of immunological mechanisms of dry eye in clinical practice, we present two clinical cases related to DED patients to provide a practical example of clinical examination application and interpretation of diagnostic parameters in daily practice. Moreover, a literature overview of the available clinical examinations to assess the immunological involvement in DED patients, with a particular focus on the correlation between diagnostic parameters and pathogenesis of clinical signs, is provided with an educational intent. CASE PRESENTATION: The presented clinical experiences suggested that in ocular surface pathologies, knowledge of the immune-inflammatory pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the observed clinical sign is of great help for understanding what is being observed in the patient and, consequently, for the choice of appropriate therapy. Literature evidence suggests that many different clinical examinations can be used to assess inflammation in DED patients, such as the assessment of hyperemia, staining of the ocular surface and measurement of hyperosmolarity and MMP-9 levels. The combination of impression cytology and flow cytometry to assess for markers of inflammation is considered the best technique to quantify the level of inflammation on the ocular surface, even if not always applicable in clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: Literature evidence and clinical experiences suggest that basic diagnostic approaches (assessment of hyperemia, MMP- 9 levels, and staining of the ocular surface with Lissamine green or fluorescein) represent useful tools to assess the inflammatory component of DED in everyday practice, providing a guide to establish the correct therapeutic strategy.
