Slow-release fertilizer is generally used in turfgrass management to maintain quality turf without inducing excess vertical growth, to avoid frequent mowing. This study was designed to verify whether kitchen waste digestate and digestate biochar could serve as slow-release fertilizers to promote turf quality and reduce nutrient leaching risk in two turfgrass species over two years in controlled pot experiments. The results showed that the nutrient release of granular fertilizers made from kitchen waste digestate and digestate biochar was a two-phase process (an initial rapid phase, followed by a slow-release phase). The kitchen waste digestate showed higher nitrogen and phosphorus release ratios than the biochar and sheep manure. Compared to the reference sheep manure, fertilization with kitchen waste digestate and biochar increased the leaf chlorophyll content by 48.6% and 27.9%, and reduced senescent leaves by 15.6% and 11.1%, respectively, at 23 d after fertilization, leading to higher turf quality. Fertilization with kitchen waste digestate biochar significantly reduced the nutrient leaching risk compared to fertilization with kitchen waste digestate and sheep manure. Our results demonstrated the potential of reusing kitchen waste digestate and digestate biochar as slow-release fertilizers for promoting turf quality in turfgrass management.

Abstract Heat stress, which is caused by global warming, threatens crops yield and quality across the world. As a kind of post-translation modification, SUMOylation involves in plants heat stress response with a rapid and wide pattern. Here, we identified small ubiquitin modifiers (SUMO), which affect drought tolerance in apple, also participated in thermotolerance. Six isoforms of SUMOs located on six chromosomes in apple genome, and all the SUMOs were up-regulated in response to heat stress condition. The MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic apple plants exhibited higher survival rate, lower ion leakage, higher catalase (CAT) activity, and Malondialdehyde (MDA) content under heat stress. MdDREB2A, the substrate of MdSUMO2 in apple, was accumulated in MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic plants than the wild type GL-3 at the protein level in response to heat stress treatment. Further, the inhibited SUMOylation level of MdDREB2A in MdSUMO2 RNAi plants might repress its ubiquitination, too. The accumulated MdDREB2A in MdSUMO2 RNAi plants further induced heat-responsive genes expression to strengthen plants thermotolerance, including MdHSFA3, MdHSP26.5, MdHSP18.2, MdHSP70, MdCYP18-1 and MdTLP1. In summary, these findings illustrate that interfering small ubiquitin modifiers (SUMO) in apple improves plants thermotolerance, partly by facilitating the stability and activity of MdDREB2A.

Nitrogen is one of the most critical macroelements required for apple biomass accumulation and quality formation. Thus, identification and characterization of candidate genes involved in nitrogen deficiency stress is of great importance to the sustainable development of the apple industry. SUMOylation is a kind of post-translational modification, which is widely involved in plant life processes, including responses to nitrogen (N) deficiency. Here, we identified apple small ubiquitin modifiers (SUMO) that participated in responding to nitrogen deficiency. Firstly, all isoforms of apple SUMOs were induced by N deficiency stress. Under N deficiency stress conditions, the MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic apple plants showed better growth potential than the wild type GL-3, including more new leaves, increased height, thicker stems, and heavier fresh weight. In addition, the MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic apple plants exhibited darker green leaves and greater root volume than GL-3 in response to N deficient conditions. Finally, the activated glutamine synthetase (GS) activity, nitrate reductase (NR) activity, as well as the induced expression of genes involved in nitrogen assimilation in the root might contribute to the tolerance of MdSUMO2 RNAi transgenic apple plants in response to nitrogen deficiency. Taken together, our finding provides insight to further study the mechanisms underlying the essential roles of apple MdSUMOs in responding to N deficient conditions.

Hail, known as an agricultural meteorological disaster, can substantially constrain the growth of the apple industry. Presently, apple orchards use a variety of colored (photo-selective) hail nets as a preventative measure. However, it is unclear which color proves most effective for apple orchards. This study provides a systematic investigation of the impact of four photo-selective colored hail nets (white, blue, black, and green; with white being the control) on the microenvironment of apple orchards, fruit tree development, fruit quality, and yield over a two-year period (2020–2021). Different photo-selective nets do not evidently alter the intensity of light, although the nets’ shading effects decrease in the order from black to green to blue. Among them, blue nets increased the proportion of blue light, while green nets enhanced the proportion of green light. On the other hand, black, green, and blue nets diminished the proportion of red and far-red light. Such photo-selective nets effectively lowered soil temperature but did not have an impact on relative humidity and air temperature. Encasing apple trees with blue nets promoted growth, increasing shoot length, thickness, leaf area, and water content, while simultaneously decreasing leaf thickness. Black nets had comparable effects, although the impacts of green nets were inconsistent. Different photo-selective nets did not significantly influence the leaf shape index or overall chlorophyll content. However, black and green nets reduced the chlorophyll a/b ratio, while blue nets slightly boosted this ratio. Additionally, blue nets proved beneficial for apple trees’ photosynthesis. With the employment of a principal component analysis and comprehensive evaluation, this study concludes that blue nets offer the most favorable environmental conditions for apple growth while protecting apple orchards against hail, compared to black, white, and green nets.

•MdSIZ1 RNAi transgenic apple trees are drought tolerance than wild type—GL-3.•MdSIZ1 RNAi plants get enhanced ability to keep water and scavenge ROS under drought conditions.•MdSIZ1 may participate in apple drought tolerance by affecting ABA biosynthesis.Drought stress typically causes heavy losses in apple production and uncovering the mechanisms by which apple tolerates drought stress is important in apple breeding. MdSIZ1 is a SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) E3 ligase that promotes SUMO binding to substrate proteins. Here, we demonstrate that MdSIZ1 in apple has a negative relationship with drought tolerance. MdSIZ1 RNAi transgenic apple trees had a higher survival rate after drought stress. During drought stress they had higher leaf water potential, reduced ion leakage, lower H2O2 and malondialdehyde contents, and higher catalase activity. In addition, MdSIZ1 RNAi transgenic plants had a higher net photosynthetic rate during the latter period of drought stress. Finally, the transgenic apple trees also altered expression levels of some microRNAs in response to drought stress. Taken together, these results indicate that apple MdSIZ1 negatively regulates drought stress by enhancing leaf water-holding capacity and antioxidant enzyme activity.
