- Abstract
Online education has significantly gained popularity due to new technology and more importantly, the growing impact of the digitalization of the economy. Despite its prominent advantages such as accessibility, affordability and flexibility, the effectiveness of online education is still a constant debate and needs extensive investigations in different research contexts. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of online learning in comparison to traditional learning in the context of English language teaching. This descriptive study was undertaken with learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) in English proficiency preparation classes, employing an online questionnaire together with final scores of proficiency tests. The results revealed that the participants had relatively positive perceptions towards online learning in all four aspects: course content, teachers, learning environment and course supports. The significant finding was that when comparing the final results of the VSTEP exams, the online learners generally were able to perform better than the learners in traditional classrooms, though the difference was not largely remarkable. Online education in the new normal will continue to excel and the effectiveness of this learning mode certainly needs further investigation from different perspectives.

Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) is a severe consequence that typically follows acute myocardial infarction (MI) and can occur in nonischemic cardiomyopathies. In patients who have experienced an ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), LVT is seen up to 15% of the time; for patients without an ischemic cardiomyopathy, it is only 2% to 36% of the time. According to Virchow's triad, the cornerstone of LVT formation includes endothelial injury, blood stasis, and hypercoagulability. However, LVT increases morbidity and mortality in patients with both ischemic and nonischemic cardiomyopathies by increasing the risk of stroke or systemic embolism. Studies on nonischemic etiology are limited, and the majority of LVT case series concentrate on ischemic cardiomyopathies. We present this case with the nonischemic cardiomyopathies caused by LVT. Specifically, the patient underwent coronary artery assessment using photon-counting computed tomography, which is among the most advanced systems worldwide.

Abstract Determining the genetic contributions to Parkinson’s disease (PD) across diverse ancestries is a high priority as this work can guide therapeutic development in a global setting. The genetics of PD spans the etiological risk spectrum, from rare, highly deleterious variants linked to monogenic forms with Mendelian patterns of inheritance, to common variation involved in sporadic disease. A major limitation in PD genomics research is lack of racial and ethnic diversity. Enrollment disparities have detrimental consequences on the generalizability of results and exacerbate existing inequities in care. The Black and African American Connections to Parkinson’s Disease (BLAAC PD) study is part of the Global Parkinson’s Genetics Program, supported by the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s initiative. The goal of the study is to investigate the genetic architecture underlying PD risk and progression in the Black and/or African American populations. This cross-sectional multicenter study in the United States has a recruitment target of up to 2,000 individuals with PD and up to 2,000 controls, all of Black and/or African American ancestry. The study design incorporates several strategies to reduce barriers to research participation. The multifaceted recruitment strategy aims to involve individuals with and without PD in various settings, emphasizing community outreach and engagement. The BLAAC PD study is an important first step toward informing understanding of the genetics of PD in a more diverse population.

Spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (SISMAD) is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain, but could potentially be fatal to patients, and should be recognized soon in the emergency department after excluding other common causes. Computed tomography (CT) is the modality of choice for initial diagnosis and follow-up. Currently there is no evidence-based guidelines for managing SISMAD. A 58-year-old man being suspected of a mesenteric artery dissection was referred to our emergergy department. The patient was monitored, treated conservatively with anticoagulant and discharged after 3 days. Follow-up CT scans at 6 month, 1 year and 1 year and a half post discharge showed a partially occluded false lumen, the diameter of true lumen had increased in size and no signs of bowel ischemia. SISMAD should be considered as part of differential diagnoses when patients in their fifth to seventh decades of life present with acute abdominal pain. Treatment includes conservative management, percutaneous endovascular interventions, or surgery, but most patients can be managed conservatively.

This study aims to determine the prevalence of Campylobacter and its antibiotic susceptibility at slaughterhouses and live poultry markets in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. A total of 177 samples, including 112 fecal samples, 28 cecal samples, and 37 rectal swab samples were collected. Thirty-nine samples tested positive for Campylobacter spp. by culture method, accounting for 22%. Isolation rates of Campylobacter in rectal swab samples were highest at 29.7% (11/37), followed by cecal samples at 25% (7/28) and fecal dropping samples at 18.8% (21/112). Species identification was performed by multiplex PCR and the result showed that the prevalence of Campylobacter coli (12.4%) was higher than Campylobacter jejuni (3.4%). Antibiotic susceptibility test showed that all isolated Campylobacter were susceptible to imipenem and meropenem (100%). Most Campylobacter were resistant to tetracycline (96.4%), ciprofloxacin (92.9%), nalidixic acid (89.3%), and ampicillin (67.9%). This study highlights the high contamination of Campylobacter and its antibiotic resistance in poultry in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.

Abstract Malignant transformation (MT) is commonly seen in IDH-mutant gliomas. There has been a growing research interest in revealing its underlying mechanisms and intervening prior to MT at the early stages of the transforming process. Here we established a unique pair of matched 3D cell models: 403L, derived from a low-grade glioma (LGG), and 403H, derived from a high-grade glioma (HGG), by utilizing IDH-mutant astrocytoma samples from the same patient when the tumor was diagnosed as WHO grade 2 (tumor mutational burden (TMB) of 3.96/Mb) and later as grade 4 (TMB of 70.07/Mb), respectively. Both cell models were authenticated to a patient’s sample retaining endogenous expression of IDH1 R132H. DNA methylation profiles of the parental tumors referred to LGG and HGG IDH-mutant glioma clusters. The immunopositivity of SOX2, NESTIN, GFAP, OLIG2, and beta 3-Tubulin suggested the multilineage potential of both models. 403H was more prompt to cell invasion and developed infiltrative HGG in vivo. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from the RNA sequencing analysis revealed the tumor invasion and aggressiveness related genes exclusively upregulated in the 403H model. Pathway analysis showcased an enrichment of genes associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and Notch signaling pathways in 403H and 403L, respectively. Mass spectrometry-based targeted metabolomics and hyperpolarized (HP) 1-13C pyruvate in-cell NMR analyses demonstrated significant alterations in the TCA cycle and fatty acid metabolism. Citrate, glutamine, and 2-HG levels were significantly higher in 403H. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing the development of a matched pair of 3D patient-derived cell models representative of MT and temozolomide (TMZ)-induced hypermutator phenotype (HMP) in IDH-mutant glioma, providing insights into genetic and metabolic changes during MT/HMP. This novel in vitro model allows further investigation of the mechanisms of MT at the cellular level. Graphic Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in older children is generally caused by conditions like esophagitis, esophageal variceal rupture, and peptic ulcer disease. However, it is rare for bleeding to result from a ruptured vascular aneurysm of the gastroduodenal artery, particularly when associated with peptic ulcer disease. This report describes a case involving a 13-year-old male who presented with severe upper GI bleeding and hemodynamic instability, requiring blood transfusion. During an emergency upper GI endoscopy, a bleeding gastric ulcer classified as Forrest IIB was identified. The bleeding was managed initially with endoscopic hemostasis and surgical suturing. Despite these interventions, the patient experienced recurrent bleeding. Further investigation with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed a vascular aneurysm in the gastroduodenal artery. The patient subsequently underwent successful endovascular embolization, as confirmed by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Following this procedure, there were no further episodes of GI bleeding. This case highlights the critical need for thorough diagnostic evaluation using contrast-enhanced CT and endoscopy in managing complex GI bleeding cases. Early detection and appropriate intervention are essential, especially in pediatric patients where the cause of bleeding may be rare and severe.

Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
Social media are utilized by millions of citizens to discuss important political issues. Politicians use these platforms to connect with the public and broadcast policy positions. Therefore, data from social media has enabled many studies of political discussion. While most analyses are limited to data from individual platforms, people are embedded in a larger information ecosystem spanning multiple social networks. Here we describe and provide access to the Indiana University 2022 U.S. Midterms Multi-Platform Social Media Dataset (MEIU22), a collection of social media posts from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and 4chan. MEIU22 links to posts about the midterm elections based on a comprehensive list of keywords and tracks the social media accounts of 1,011 candidates from October 1 to December 25, 2022. We also publish the source code of our pipeline to enable similar multi-platform research projects., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, forthcoming in ICWSM23

Biology (General) ,QH301-705.5 - Abstract
Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a molecularly heterogeneous solid malignancy, and its fitness may be shaped by how its tumor cells evolve. However, ability to monitor tumor cell evolution is hampered by the presence of numerous passenger mutations that do not provide any biological consequences. Here we develop a strategy to determine the tumor clonality of three independent HCC cohorts of 524 patients with diverse etiologies and race/ethnicity by utilizing somatic mutations in cancer driver genes. We identify two main types of tumor evolution, i.e., linear, and non-linear models where non-linear type could be further divided into classes, which we call shallow branching and deep branching. We find that linear evolving HCC is less aggressive than other types. GTF2IRD2B mutations are enriched in HCC with linear evolution, while TP53 mutations are the most frequent genetic alterations in HCC with non-linear models. Furthermore, we observe significant B cell enrichment in linear trees compared to non-linear trees suggesting the need for further research to uncover potential variations in immune cell types within genomically determined phylogeny types. These results hint at the possibility that tumor cells and their microenvironment may collectively influence the tumor evolution process.

AbstractBased on the UTAUT theory, this study aims to determine the determinants of customers’ intention to use Smart Locker service and specify the relationships between these factors forming on the Resource Matching theory and the Perceived Value theory. The authors applied the SEM model to estimate the primary dataset from 277 potential Ho Chi Minh City customers. This paper showed that there are 8 factors affecting the intention to use Smart Locker of Ho Chi Minh city customers, namely: Convenience (CVN), Privacy Security (PV), Reliability (REL), Functionality (FUN), Service Diversity (SD), Social Influence (SI), Facilitating Conditions (FC), Perceived Value (VAL). The influence of security, service diversity, and social influence on customers’ intention to use the Smart Locker is mediated by perceived value ‘Social Influence’ (SI) and it has both direct and indirect impact on the intention to use Smart Locker through ‘Perceived Value’. The ‘Perceived Value’ (VAL) factor has a significant direct effect, while the ‘Privacy Security’ (PV), and ‘Service Diversity’ (SD) factors have indirect effects on the ‘Intention to Use’ (INT) Smart Lockers. Since then, the authors point out limitations hindering customers’ intention to use Smart Locker and offer some solutions for logistics firms to improve their ability to attract customers’ intention in Vietnam.

In the advanced phase, there is a high risk of chondrosarcoma cells metastasizing to various organs. The conventional treatment, surgery, has shown low efficacy in the metastasis stage. In recent years, several ugonin compounds derived from Helminthostachys zeylanica (L.) Hook. have been reported to restrict cell migration in different types of cancer. However, the effect of ugonin on chondrosarcoma remains unclear. Our study surveyed the impact of six ugonin compounds on regulating chondrosarcoma cell motility. Ugonin V showed the most effective effect on inhibiting human chondrosarcoma cell migration by reducing MMP7. We observed that ugonin V inhibited MMP7 levels and restricted chondrosarcoma cell migration via MEK/ERK/c-Jun cascade. Importantly, this study is the first demonstration of ugonin V pharmacology inhibiting chondrosarcoma metastasis in mouse model. Our study provided evidence of ugonin V as a novel candidate for inhibiting chondrosarcoma metastasis by suppressing MMP7 expression through inhibiting the MEK/ERK/c-Jun signaling pathways.

Abstract The spread of misinformation poses a threat to the social media ecosystem. Effective countermeasures to mitigate this threat require that social media platforms be able to accurately detect low-credibility accounts even before the content they share can be classified as misinformation. Here we present methods to infer account credibility from information diffusion patterns, in particular leveraging two networks: the reshare network, capturing an account’s trust in other accounts, and the bipartite account-source network, capturing an account’s trust in media sources. We extend network centrality measures and graph embedding techniques, systematically comparing these algorithms on data from diverse contexts and social media platforms. We demonstrate that both kinds of trust networks provide useful signals for estimating account credibility. Some of the proposed methods yield high accuracy, providing promising solutions to promote the dissemination of reliable information in online communities. Two kinds of homophily emerge from our results: accounts tend to have similar credibility if they reshare each other’s content or share content from similar sources. Our methodology invites further investigation into the relationship between accounts and news sources to better characterize misinformation spreaders.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus remains a major global health issue, and great attention is directed at natural therapeutics. This systematic review aimed to assess the potential of flavonoids as antidiabetic agents by investigating their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase and α-amylase, two key enzymes involved in starch digestion. Six scientific databases (PubMed, Virtual Health Library, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and WHO Global Index Medicus) were searched until August 21, 2022, for in vitro studies reporting IC50 values of purified flavonoids on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, along with corresponding data for acarbose as a positive control. A total of 339 eligible articles were analyzed, resulting in the retrieval of 1643 flavonoid structures. These structures were rigorously standardized and curated, yielding 974 unique compounds, among which 177 flavonoids exhibited inhibition of both α-glucosidase and α-amylase are presented. Quality assessment utilizing a modified CONSORT checklist and structure–activity relationship (SAR) analysis were performed, revealing crucial features for the simultaneous inhibition of flavonoids against both enzymes. Moreover, the review also addressed several limitations in the current research landscape and proposed potential solutions. The curated datasets are available online at https://github.com/MedChemUMP/FDIGA . Graphical Abstract

Here we show that anthropic arguments can set powerful constraints on {\em transient} variations of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ over the past 4 billion years since the appearance of lifeforms on Earth. We argue that the passage through Earth of a macroscopic dark matter clump with a value of $\alpha$ inside differing substantially from its nominal value would make Earth uninhabitable. We demonstrate that in the regime of extreme variation of $\alpha$, the periodic table of elements is truncated, water fails to serve as a universal solvent, and protons become unstable. Thereby, the anthropic principle constrains the likelihood of such encounters on a 4-billion-year timescale. This enables us to improve existing astrophysical bounds on certain dark matter model couplings by several orders of magnitude., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
The spread of misinformation poses a threat to the social media ecosystem. Effective countermeasures to mitigate this threat require that social media platforms be able to accurately detect low-credibility accounts even before the content they share can be classified as misinformation. Here we present methods to infer account credibility from information diffusion patterns, in particular leveraging two networks: the reshare network, capturing an account's trust in other accounts, and the bipartite account-source network, capturing an account's trust in media sources. Two kinds of homophily emerge from our results: accounts tend to have similar credibility if they reshare each other's content or share content from similar sources. Our methodology invites further investigation into the relationship between accounts and news sources to better characterize misinformation spreaders.

PET bottles are widely used for drinking water. PET bottles’ quality depends on their thickness. The aim of this study is to find design variables and optimal parameters of the stretching blow molding (SBM) process of PET bottles in order to increase the uniformity of bottle thickness by using the simulation technique and Taguchi method. The finite element method is used to predict the results of the SBM process. The Taguchi method is performed with six variables that belong to two main factors, which are temperature positions and parison thickness. Through the analysis process, the optimal parameters are determined and verified, with a minimum objective function result of 0.000265. On the other hand, the temperature at T4 positions and the preform thickness at Th2 sections are the main influences on the uniformity of PET bottle thickness.

Abstract Background Vietnam conducted the national Noncommunicable Disease Risk-Factor Surveillance (STEPs) surveys in the years 2010, 2015, and 2021. This study aims to use STEPs data to assess the burden of comorbidity between diabetes and hypertension, analyze trends over time, and identify factors associated with this comorbidity. Methods The study extracted data for the population aged 25–64 years old from three STEPs surveys. Survey weight was used for all estimations of prevalence and 95% CI. Correlated factors with comorbidity were examined by a multivariate logistics model. Results The prevalence of comorbidity in 2021 was about 3.92% among Vietnamese people aged 25–64. In the last 10 years, this prevalence has increased more than 8 times (from 0.44% to 3.92%). Sub-populations demonstrating the most significant changes included the male population, people living in urban areas, and older people. Significant factors correlated with comorbidity included demographic factors, body mass index (BMI), and clustering of 4 noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) behavioral risk factors (OR = 3.48, p

Our paper contributes to the nascent field of digital entrepreneurship by proposing a model linking students’ Fintech literacy to digital entrepreneurial intention based on the application of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Structural equation modelling (SEM) with bootstrapping method was used to examine the relationships between variables from a sample of 466 Vietnamese university students. The findings reveal that personal attitude towards digital entrepreneurship and perceived behavioural control are the key determinants of digital entrepreneurial intention. Three Fintech literacy dimensions (namely blockchain, crowdfunding, and AI literacy) are found to directly affect digital entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, the mediating roles of attitude towards digital entrepreneurship and perceived behavioural control are empirically supported. Family business background can increase the impacts of Fintech literacy on Digital entrepreneurial intention. This study provides empirical evidence in the field of digital entrepreneurship in a developing transition economy. Research suggests recommendations to promote digital entrepreneurship intention among students.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a lethal disease caused by a pathogenic coronavirus, feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), in cats. Effective vaccines have been unsuccessful due to the frequent mutation of FIPV and antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) caused by vaccine-induced IgG antibodies (Abs). This study examined the induction of pan-coronavirus IgM Ab in mice and its ameliorating effects in feline FIP using CoV-mMAP8, an octavalent dendrimer composed of multiple antigenic peptides. The 11-amino acid peptide (SAIEDLLFNKV) was designed as the highly conserved region of the fusion peptide at the N-terminus of S2’ subunit of the spike protein found in human and animal coronaviruses and was then conjugated to an octavalent dendrimer to form CoV-mMAP8. After a total of three injections of CoV-mMAP8 into Balb/c mice with α-galactosylceramide (α-GC) co-administered in the second injection, serum titers of IgM Abs increased against the peptide, recombinant spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV, and crude viral antigens of canine coronavirus, porcine endemic diarrhea virus, and FIPV. In contrast, serum titers of IgG Abs did not significantly increase against any antigens. When CoV-mMAP8 was injected into three cats experimentally infected with FIPV, hyperthermia was improved within seven days after the injection with ameliorating inflammatory markers such as the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and the systemic immune-inflammatory index. One cat that showed recurrent hyperthermia received an additional injection of CoV-mMAP8, and clinical improvement was observed again. Postmortem examinations confirmed chronic lesions of FIP in all the cats, providing evidence that FIPV had been successfully infected and treated with CoV-mMAP8 in all the cats. Based on the induction of pan-coronavirus IgM Abs in mice and ameliorating effects in FIP of cats, it is assumed that CoV-mMAP8 has the potential to overcome the challenges posed by variants and ADE in FIPV. The mutational compatibility of CoV-mMAP8 can make it a viable universal vaccine for various coronaviruses beyond FIPV.

Abstract Background Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a global health burden, with the poorest five-year survival rate of the gynecological malignancies due to diagnosis at advanced stage and high recurrence rate. Recurrence in EOC is driven by the survival of chemoresistant, stem-like tumor-initiating cells (TICs) that are supported by a complex extracellular matrix and immunosuppressive microenvironment. To target TICs to prevent recurrence, we identified genes critical for TIC viability from a whole genome siRNA screen. A top hit was the cancer-associated, proteoglycan subunit synthesis enzyme UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH). Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to characterize UGDH expression in histological and molecular subtypes of EOC. EOC cell lines were subtyped according to the molecular subtypes and the functional effects of modulating UGDH expression in vitro and in vivo in C1/Mesenchymal and C4/Differentiated subtype cell lines was examined. Results High UGDH expression was observed in high-grade serous ovarian cancers and a distinctive survival prognostic for UGDH expression was revealed when serous cancers were stratified by molecular subtype. High UGDH was associated with a poor prognosis in the C1/Mesenchymal subtype and low UGDH was associated with poor prognosis in the C4/Differentiated subtype. Knockdown of UGDH in the C1/mesenchymal molecular subtype reduced spheroid formation and viability and reduced the CD133 + /ALDH high TIC population. Conversely, overexpression of UGDH in the C4/Differentiated subtype reduced the TIC population. In co-culture models, UGDH expression in spheroids affected the gene expression of mesothelial cells causing changes to matrix remodeling proteins, and fibroblast collagen production. Inflammatory cytokine expression of spheroids was altered by UGDH expression. The effect of UGDH knockdown or overexpression in the C1/ Mesenchymal and C4/Differentiated subtypes respectively was tested on mouse intrabursal xenografts and showed dynamic changes to the tumor stroma. Knockdown of UGDH improved survival and reduced tumor burden in C1/Mesenchymal compared to controls. Conclusions These data show that modulation of UGDH expression in ovarian cancer reveals distinct roles for UGDH in the C1/Mesenchymal and C4/Differentiated molecular subtypes of EOC, influencing the tumor microenvironmental composition. UGDH is a strong potential therapeutic target in TICs, for the treatment of EOC, particularly in patients with the mesenchymal molecular subtype.

Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
With a substantial proportion of the population currently hesitant to take the COVID-19 vaccine, it is important that people have access to accurate information. However, there is a large amount of low-credibility information about vaccines spreading on social media. In this paper, we present the CoVaxxy dataset, a growing collection of English-language Twitter posts about COVID-19 vaccines. Using one week of data, we provide statistics regarding the numbers of tweets over time, the hashtags used, and the websites shared. We also illustrate how these data might be utilized by performing an analysis of the prevalence over time of high- and low-credibility sources, topic groups of hashtags, and geographical distributions. Additionally, we develop and present the CoVaxxy dashboard, allowing people to visualize the relationship between COVID-19 vaccine adoption and U.S. geo-located posts in our dataset. This dataset can be used to study the impact of online information on COVID-19 health outcomes (e.g., vaccine uptake) and our dashboard can help with exploration of the data., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures

A promising solution for efficient methane (CH4) storage and transport is a metal–organic framework (MOF)-based sorbent. Hence, searching for potential MOFs like M2(BDC)2(DABCO) to enhance the CH4 storage capacity in both gravimetric and volumetric uptakes is essential. Herein, we systematically elucidate the adsorption of CH4 in M2(BDC)2(DABCO) or M(DABCO) (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) MOFs using multiscale simulations that combined grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation with van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) calculation. We find that, in the M(DABCO) series, Mg(DABCO) has the highest total CH4 adsorption capacities, with mtot= 231.39 mg/g at 298 K, for gravimetric uptake, and Vtot= 231.43 cc(STP)/cc, for volumetric uptake. The effects of temperature, pressure, and metal substitution on enhancing CH4 storage are evaluated, and we predict that the volumetric CH4 storage capacity on M(DABCO) could meet the DOE target at temperatures of ca. 238 K–268 K and pressures of 35–100 bar. The interactions between CH4 and M(DABCO) are dominated by the vdW interactions, as shown by the vdW-DF calculations. The Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni substitutions in M(DABCO) result in a stronger interaction and thus, a higher CH4 storage capacity, at higher pressures for Mg, Mn, Ni, and Co and at lower pressures for Fe. This work may provide guidance for the rational design of CH4 storage in M2(BDC)2(DABCO) MOFs.
