Superfluid helium-4 (He II) has been widely utilized as a coolant in various scientific and engineering applications due to its superior heat transfer capability. An important parameter required in the design of many He II based cooling systems is the peak heat flux $q^*$, which refers to the threshold heat flux above which boiling spontaneously occurs in He II. Past experimental and numerical studies showed that $q^*$ increases when the heating time $t_h$ is reduced, which leads to an intuitive expectation that very high $q^*$ may be achievable at sufficiently small $t_h$. Knowledge on how $q^*$ actually behaves at small $t_h$ is important for applications such as laser ablation in He II. Here we present a numerical study on the evolution of the thermodynamic state of the He II in front of a planar heater by solving the He II two-fluid equations of motion. For an applied heat flux, we determine the heating time beyond which the He II near the heater transits to the vapor phase. As such, a curve correlating $q^*$ and $t_h$ can be obtained, which nicely reproduces some relevant experimental data. Surprisingly, we find that there exists a critical peak heat flux $q^*_c$, above which boiling occurs nearly instantaneously regardless of $t_h$. We reveal that the boiling in this regime is essentially cavitation caused by the combined effects of the first-sound and the second-sound waves in He II. Based on this physical picture, an analytical model for $q^*_c$ is developed, which reproduces the simulated $q^*_c$ values at various He II bath temperatures and hydrostatic head pressures. A sudden loss of vacuum can be catastrophic for particle accelerators. In such an event, air leaks into the liquid-helium-cooled accelerator beamline tube and condenses on its inner surface, causing rapid boiling of the helium and dangerous pressure build-up. Understanding the coupled heat and mass transfer processes is important for the design of beamline cryogenic systems. Our past experimental study on nitrogen gas propagating in a copper tube cooled by normal liquid helium (He I) has revealed a nearly exponential slowing down of the gas front. A theoretical model that accounts for the interplay of the gas dynamics and the condensation was developed, which successfully reproduced various key observations. However, since many accelerator beamlines are actually cooled by the superfluid phase of helium (He II) in which the heat transfer is via a non-classical thermal-counterflow mode, we need to extend our work to the He II cooled tube. This paper reports our systematic measurements using He II and the numerical simulations based on a modified model that accounts for the He II heat-transfer characteristics. By tuning the He II peak heat-flux parameter in our model, we have reproduced the observed gas dynamics in all experimental runs. The fine-tuned model is then utilized to reliably evaluate the heat deposition in He II. Transient heat transfer in superfluid $^4$He (He II) is a complex process that involves the interplay of the unique counterflow heat-transfer mode, the emission of second-sound waves, and the creation of quantized vortices. Many past researches focused on homogeneous heat transfer of He II in a uniform channel driven by a planar heater. In this paper, we report our systematic study of He II transient heat transfer in nonhomogeneous geometries that are pertinent to emergent applications. By solving the He II two-fluid equation of motion coupled with the Vinen's equation for vortex-density evolution, we examine and compare the characteristics of transient heat transfer from planar, cylindrical, and spherical heaters in He II. Our results show that as the heater turns on, an outgoing second-sound pulse emerges, in which the vortex density grows rapidly. These vortices attenuate the second sound and result in a heated He II layer in front of the heater, i.e., the thermal layer. In the planar case where the vortices are created throughout the space, the second-sound pulse is continuously attenuated, leading to a strong thermal layer that diffusively spreads following the heat pulse. On the contrary, in the cylindrical and the spherical heater cases, vortices are created mainly in a thin thermal layer near the heater surface. As the heat pulse ends, a rarefaction tail develops following the second-sound pulse, in which the temperature drops. This rarefaction tail can promptly suppress the thermal layer and take away all the thermal energy deposited in it. The effects of the heater size, heat flux, pulse duration, and temperature on the thermal-layer dynamics are discussed. We also show how the peak heat flux for the onset of boiling in He II can be studied in our model.

Generic scaling laws, such as the Kolmogorov's 5/3-law, are milestone achievements of turbulence research in classical fluids. For quantum fluids such as atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, superfluid helium, and superfluid neutron stars, turbulence can also exist in the presence of a chaotic tangle of evolving quantized vortex lines. However, due to the lack of suitable experimental tools to directly probe the vortex-tangle motion, so far little is known about possible scaling laws that characterize the velocity correlations and trajectory statistics of the vortices in quantum-fluid turbulence (QT). Acquiring such knowledge could greatly benefit the development of advanced statistical models of QT. Here we report an experiment where a tangle of vortices in superfluid $^4$He are decorated with solidified deuterium tracer particles. Under experimental conditions where these tracers follow the motion of the vortices, we observed an apparent superdiffusion of the vortices. Our analysis shows that this superdiffusion is not due to L\'{e}vy flights, i.e., long-distance hops that are known to be responsible for superdiffusion of random walkers. Instead, a previously unknown power-law scaling of the vortex-velocity temporal correlation is uncovered as the cause. Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities cooled by superfluid helium-4 (He II) are building blocks of many modern particle accelerators due to their high quality factor. However, Joule heating from sub-millimeter surface defects on cavities can lead to cavity quenching, which limits the maximum acceleration gradient of the accelerators. Developing a non-contacting detection technology to accurately locate these surface defects is the key to improve the performance of SRF cavities and hence the accelerators. In a recent proof-of-concept experiment (Phys. Rev. Applied, 11, 044003 (2019)), we demonstrated that a molecular tagging velocimetry (MTV) technique based on the tracking of a He$_2^*$ molecular tracer line created nearby a surface hot spot in He II can be utilized to locate the hot spot. In order to make this technique practically useful, here we describe our further development of a stereoscopic MTV setup for tracking the tracer line's motion in three-dimensional (3D) space. We simulate a quench spot by applying a transient voltage pulse to a small heater mounted on a substrate plate. Images of the drifted tracer line, taken with two cameras from orthogonal directions, are used to reconstruct the line profile in 3D space. A new algorithm for analyzing the 3D line profile is developed, which incorporates the finite size effect of the heater. We show that the center location of the heater can be reproduced on the substrate surface with an uncertainty of only a few hundred microns, thereby proving the practicability of this method.

Despite being a quantum two-fluid system, superfluid helium-4 (He II) is observed to behave similarly to classical fluids when a flow is generated by mechanical forcing. This similarity has brought up the feasibility of utilizing He II for high Reynolds number classical turbulence research, considering the small kinematic viscosity of He II. However, it has been suggested that the non-classical dissipation mechanism in He II at small scales may alter its turbulent statistics and intermittency. In this work, we report our study of a nearly homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (HIT) generated by a towed grid in He II. We measure the velocity field using particle tracking velocimetry with solidified deuterium particles as the tracers. By correlating the velocities measured simultaneously on different particle trajectories or at different times along the same particle trajectory, we are able to conduct both Eulerian and Lagrangian flow analyses. Spatial velocity structure functions obtained through the Eulerian analysis show scaling behaviors in the inertial subrange similar to that for classical HIT but with enhanced intermittency. The Lagrangian analysis allows us to examine the flow statistics down to below the dissipation length scale. Interestingly, strong deviations from the classical scaling behaviors are observed in this regime. Cryogenic helium-4 has extremely small kinetic viscosity, which makes it a promising material for high Reynolds ($Re$) number turbulence research in compact laboratory apparatuses. In its superfluid phase (He II), helium has an extraordinary heat transfer capability and has been utilized in various scientific and engineering applications. In order to unlock the full potential of helium in turbulence research and to improve our understanding of the heat transfer mechanism in He II, a flow facility that allows quantitative study of helium heat-and-mass transfer processes is needed. Here we report our work in assembling and testing a unique helium pipe flow facility that incorporates a novel double-line molecular tracking velocimetry (DL-MTV) system. This flow facility allows us to generate turbulent pipe flows with $Re$ above $10^7$, and it can also be adapted to produce heat-induced counterflow in He II. The DL-MTV system, which is based on the generation and tracking of two parallel thin He$^*_2$ molecular tracer lines with an adjustable separation distance, allows us to measure not only the velocity profile but also both the transverse and longitudinal spatial velocity structure functions. We have also installed a deferential pressure sensor to the flow pipe for pressure drop measurement. The testing results of the flow facility and the measurement devices are presented. Superconducting ratio-frequency (SRF) cavities, cooled by superfluid helium-4 (He II), are key components in modern particle accelerators. Quenches in SRF cavities caused by Joule heating from local surface defects can severely limit the maximum achievable accelerating field. Existing methods for quench spot detection include temperature mapping and second-sound triangulation. These methods are useful but all have known limitations. Here we describe a new method for surface quench spot detection by visualizing the heat transfer in He II via tracking He$_2^*$ molecular tracer lines. A proof-of-concept experiment has been conducted, in which a miniature heater mounted on a plate was pulsed on to simulate a surface quench spot. A He$_2^*$ tracer line created nearby the heater deforms due to the counterflow heat transfer in He II. By analyzing the tracer-line deformation, we can well reproduce the heater location within a few hundred microns, which clearly demonstrates the feasibility of this new technology. Our analysis also reveals that the heat content transported in He II is only a small fraction of the total input heat energy. We show that the remaining energy is essentially consumed in the formation of a cavitation zone near the heater. By estimating the size of this cavitation zone, we discuss how the existence of the cavitation zone may explain a decades-long puzzle observed in many second-sound triangulation experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures
