Due to their high reactivity, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can engage in physical and chemical reactions with particulate matter in the atmosphere, leading to air pollution. Extended exposure to VOCs may result in various health concerns, including respiratory system problems, neurological effects, skin and eye irritation, and an increased risk of certain cancers. Traditional benchtop mass spectrometers possess the advantages of high sensitivity and rapid analysis capabilities, but the large size typically confines their applications to professional laboratories. To overcome this limitation, portable mass spectrometers are emerging as a new tool for in-situ analysis. In this study, a portable mass spectrometer based on discontinuous atmosphere pressure interface was developed, which combined with a sub-vacuum plasma ionization source. Ion trap, known for its small size and adequate performance, was adopted in this miniaturized mass spectrometer. This portable mass spectrometer features a total weight of about 4.6 kg, with the dimensions of 217 mm×162 mm×106 mm, and operates with a power consumption under 150 W. On this design, a fully metallic solenoid valve was selected as the core component to limit atmospheric pressure, eliminating the need for the rubber tubing used in traditional pinch valves. Compared to traditional pinch valves, this solenoid valve ensures a more stable airflow during experiments. As a result, the repeatability and environmental adaptability of the portable mass spectrometer were improved. A certain delay marked as radio freqency (RF) delay was introduced between the injection and cooling periods, and the RF-delay time was optimized. Frequency scanning mode and amplitude scanning mode were tested in parallel. Despite of a trade-off in size, amplitude scanning offered improved resolution, enabling the differentiation of ions with close mass to charge ratios. After systematic optimization, satisfactory performances in mass resolution and sensitivity were achieved. The mass resolution of the mass spectrometer for dimethyl carbonate was improved to 0.2 u (FWHM), and a sensitivity of 60 μg/m3 for naphthalene was achieved. The capability of mixed VOCs was also validated using dimethyl carbonate and trimethyl phosphate. This mass spectrometer developed in this study, characterized by its high portability and satisfactory performance, is expected to hold great potential for applications in VOCs analysis.

Interleukin 21 (IL-21) is a receptor participating in innate immunity and correlates with the activation of innate immune cells. We sought to investigate the role of plasma IL-21 in patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN).

In China, idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) accounts for 24.9% of glomerular diseases, the second highest share, and is increasing year by year. Chinese medicine has been widely used in the clinical practice of IMN. However, there are no evidence-based practice guidelines for the treatment of IMN with Chinese medicine. This guideline followed the methods and steps of the guideline development manual. The level of the body of the evidence was assessed by the GRADE. An outline of the clinical questions was formulated through interviews with leading Chinese medicine experts and a review of relevant clinical guidelines. Based on the results of a systematic review of authoritative textbooks and clinical research literature, a clinical question list, a clinical outcome assessment index for IMN, and a list of types of Chinese medicine syndromes were developed, and a national expert survey was conducted to identify the clinical questions included in this guideline. A consensus meeting was held to finalize 10 recommendations for treating IMN with Chinese medicine. This guideline focuses on the clinical practice of Chinese medicine in the treatment of IMN, and is applicable to all levels of Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese and Western medicine institutions, as well as medical institutions and healthcare workers who provide Chinese medicine services.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare elbow range of motion, triceps extension strength and functional results of type C (AO/OTA) distal humerus fractures treated with bilateral triceps tendon (BTT) approach and olecranon osteotomy (OO). At the same time, we are also trying to know whether BTT approach can provide sufficient vision for comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus, and whether it is convenient to convert to the treatment to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) or OO. Methods: Patients treated with OO and BTT approaches for type C distal humerus fractures between July 2014 and December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Inclusion criteria include: (1) patients' age were more than 18 years old, (2) follow-up was no less than 6 months, and (3) patients were diagnosed with type C fractures (based on the AO/OTA classification). Exclusion criteria include: (1) open fractures (Gustillo type 2 or type 3), (2) treated by other approaches, and (3) presented with combined injuries of ipsilateral upper extremities, such as ulnar nerve. Elbow range of motion and triceps extension strength testing were completely valuated, when the fractures had healed. Assessment of functional results using the Mayo elbow performance score and complications were conducted in final follow-up. The data were compared using the two tailed Student's t-test. All data were presented as mean ± standard deviation. Results: Eighty-six patients of type C distal humerus fractures, treated by OO and BTT approach were retrospectively reviewed between July 2014 and December 2017. Fifty-five distal humerus fractures (23 males and 32 females, mean age 52.7 years) treated by BTT approach or OO were included in this study. There were 10 fractures of type C1, 16 type C2 and 29 type C3 according to the AO/OTA classification. Patients were divided into two surgical approach groups chosen by the operators: BTT group (28 patients) and OO group (27 patients). And the mean follow-up time of all patients was 15.6 months (range, 6–36 months). Three cases in BTT group were converted to TEA, and one converted to OO. Only one case in BTT group presented poor articular reduction with a step more than 2 mm. There were not significantly different in functional outcomes according to the Mayo elbow performance score, operation time and extension flexion motion are values between BTT group and OO group (p > 0.05). Complications and reoperation rate were also similar in the two groups. Triceps manual muscle testing were no significant difference in the two groups, even subdivided in elder patients (aged >60 years old). Conclusion: BTT is a safe approach to achieve similar functional result comparing with OO. BTT were not suitable for every case with severe comminuted pattern, but it avoids the potential complications related to OO, and has no complications concerning with triceps tendon. It is convenient for open reduction internal fixation and flexible to be converted to OO, as well as available to be converted to TEA in elder patients.

Rhododendron shanii W.P. Fang 1983 (Ericaceae) is woody plant naturally distributed in the southwest of Anhui, China. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of R. shanii was generated by whole-genome next-generation sequencing data and assembled based on three Rhododendron species chloroplast genome. The complete chloroplast genome sequence of R. shanii was 204,170 bp and divided into four distinct regions: small single-copy region (2615 bp), large single-copy region (107,189 bp), and a pair of inverted repeat regions (47,183 bp). The genome annotation displayed 150 genes, including 95 protein-coding genes, 47 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis with the Ericaceae reported chloroplast genomes revealed that R. shanii is sister to the clade comprising R. delavayi, R. griersonianum and R. platypodum.

Utilization and transfer of nitrogen (N) in a strip intercropping system of garlic (Allium sativum L.) and broad bean (Vicia faba L.) have been investigated rarely. The objectives of this study were to quantify N uptake and utilization by intercropped broad bean and garlic and determine the magnitude of N transfer from broad bean to garlic. Field and pot trials were carried out in the Erhai Lake Basin in China using 15N tracer applied to the soil or injected into broad bean plants. Strip intercropping of garlic and broad bean increased N absorption (47.2%) compared with sole crop broad bean (31.9%) or sole crop garlic (40.7%) and reduced soil residual N. Nearly 15% of 15N injected into petioles of broad bean intercropped with garlic was recovered in garlic at harvest, suggesting that N could be transferred from broad bean to strip intercropped garlic. The findings provide a basis for evaluating legumes' role in optimizing N fertilization when intercropped with non-legumes.
