Abstract

Our study sought to provide a more nuanced understanding of the significant issues experienced by young adult survivors of child-maltreatment (CM) prior to seeking counseling services. More specifically, we examined differences between survivors of CM and participants with no CM histories related to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation, and suicide attempt, and scores on the Counseling Center Assessment of Psychological Symptoms (CCAPS). In our sample of N = 2604 post-secondary students seeking counseling services, CM histories were significantly associated with higher frequencies of NSSI, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempt. Further, results indicated that survivors of CM reported significantly higher mean scores on all CCAPS subscales and were more likely to report scores that were considered "elevated" when compared to peers with no reported CM history. Abstract

Psychiatric disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are significantly more likely among those exposed to child maltreatment. Not all who are exposed to maltreatment develop PTSD; while many contributing factors are understood, more research is needed to understand why some develop this disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among an understudied form of maltreatment: childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) and cognitive processes that may directly or indirectly explain development of PTSD among CEM survivors. A sample of college students (N = 396) completed surveys related to childhood trauma history, cognitive processing, and PTSD. Mediation analyses revealed that CEM had a significant direct effect on PTSD, and that centrality of the event and intrusive rumination significantly mediated this relationship. Recommendations are provided for identifying maladaptive cognitive processes with the aim of facilitating adaptive cognitive processing related to prior trauma exposure and current PTSD symptoms. 10. A Study of Health-Related Screening Behaviors among Individuals in Texas with Adverse Childhood Experiences

Abstract

Data from this dissertation was obtained from the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The Texas BRFSS questionnaire used a cross-sectional retrospective research design while asking questions about individuals' exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and included 11 questions. The sample included 9096 individuals over the age of 18 who had exposure to at least one ACE. An ACE score was calculated for all participants and were divided into two groups (less than 4 ACEs and more than 4 ACEs) to compare whether differences in ACE score would impact participating in routine health screening or not. Additionally, whether different kinds of ACEs would impact health screening was also examined. Logistic regression was used to assess whether different kinds of ACEs impact participation in routine health screening. This study found that individuals with a history of childhood adversities including experiencing childhood emotional abuse, living in a dysfunctional household impeded them from participating in routine health screenings. It is recommended that both primary care physicians and mental health providers to use motivational interviewing while interacting with patients with ACE histories. It is also suggested that using trauma-informed care (TIC) in primary care can help patients talk about their abuse histories and utilize healthcare without any judgment.
