Abstract

Handgrip strength (HGS) is an easy-to-use instrument for monitoring people's health status. Numerous researchers in many countries have done a study on handgrip disease or demographic data. This study focused on classifying aged groups referring to handgrip value using machine learning. A total of fifty-four participants had involved in this study, ages ranging from 24 years to 57 years old. Digital Pinch Grip Analyzer had been used to measure the handgrip measurement three times to get more accurate results. The result is then recorded by Clinical Analysis Software (CAS) that is built into the analyzer. An independent t-test is used to investigate the significant factor for age group classification. The data were then classified using machine learning analysis which are Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), and Naïve Bayes. The overall dataset shows that the Support Vector Machine is the most suitable classification technique with average accuracy between 5 groups of age is 98%, specificity of 0.79, the sensitivity of 0.9814 and 0.0185 of mean absolute error. SVM also give the lowest mean absolute error compared to RF and Naïve Bayes. This study is consistent with the previous work that there is a relationship between handgrip and age. more...

Abstract

The Biomedical Engineering Maintenance Services (BEMS) is a comprehensive maintenance program that ensures the safety and reliability of medical devices. Significant and crucial devices are identified and prioritized for best practice prior to the equipment life cycle to mitigate functional problems, alarmed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) underlying the modernization agenda. A model of multi‐criteria decision‐making (MCDM) to prioritize medical devices according to their criticality is presented in this paper, with the utilization of quality function deployment (QFD) and fuzzy logic in the development of the model through a quantitative survey of experts from all regions in Malaysia. As a result, a customized version of the Asset Criticality Assessment (ACA) is developed and is recommended for use in more than 144 Ministry of Health (MOH) hospitals. Subsequently, real data of four selected devices are pulled from the Asset and Services Information System (ASIS) to demonstrate a relevant and comparable end‐result using the QFD and fuzzy logic. In essence, the key contribution of the customized ACA model is that it assesses a promising evaluation with a broader range on both the performance of medical devices and the appropriate asset replacement choices. Abstract

In 2015, approximately 195 countries agreed with the United Nations that by 2030, they would work to make the world a better place. There would be synergies in accomplishing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Synergy using a single sustainable resource is critical to assist developing nations in achieving the SDGs as cost-effectively and efficiently possible. To use fungal dye resources, we proposed a combination of the zero hunger and affordable energy goals. Dyes are widely used in high-tech sectors, including food and energy. Natural dyes are more environment-friendly than synthetic dyes and may have medicinal benefits. Fungi are a natural source of dye that can be substituted for plants. For example, medicinal mushrooms offer a wide range of safe organic dyes that may be produced instantly, inexpensively, and in large quantities. Meanwhile, medicinal mushroom dyes may provide a less expensive choice for photovoltaic (PV) technology due to their non-toxic and environmentally friendly qualities. This agenda thoroughly explains the significance of pigments from medicinal mushrooms in culinary and solar PV applications. Abstract

For the past twenty years, there has been increasing interest and investment in solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. One particular area of interest is the development of concentrating PV (CPV), especially for use in building integration. Many CPV designs have been developed and investigated. This paper aims at producing a mathematical modelling using MATLAB programme to predict the current-voltage (I-V) and power-voltage (P-V) characteristics of a static CPV. The MATLAB programme could also simulate the angular response of the CPV designs-which has never been explored in the previous literature. In this paper, a CPV known as the rotationally asymmetrical dielectric totally internally reflecting concentrator (RADTIRC) was analysed. A specific RADTIRC design that has an acceptance angle of ±40° was investigated in this paper. A mathematical modelling was used to simulate the angular characteristics of the RADTIRC from −50° to 50° with an increment 5°. For any CPV, we propose that the value of opto-electronic gain, Copto-e needs to be included in the mathematical model, which were obtained from experiments. The range of incident angle (±50°) was selected to demonstrate that the RADTIRC is capable of capturing the sun rays within its acceptance angle of ±40°. In each simulation, the I-V and P-V characteristics were produced, and the short circuit current (Isc), the open-circuit voltage (Voc), the maximum power (Pmax), the fill factor (FF) and the opto-electronic gain (Copto-e) were determined and recorded. The results from the simulations were validated via experiments. It was found that the simulation model is able to predict the I-V and P-V characteristics of the RADTIRC as well as its angular response, with the highest error recorded for the Isc, Voc, Pmax, FF and Copto-e was 2.1229%, 5.3913%, 9.9681%, 4.4231% and 0.0000% respectively when compared with the experiment. more...

Abstract

Stress analysis by utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) device in conjunction with signal processing techniques has emerged as an important area of research and the efforts are being made on detecting and classifying stress level. Non-invasive EEG device is used in this study to collect brain signals and analyze the signals by applying the modified Welch’s fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm to extract the power spectral density (PSD) of each frequency band and calculate the power ratio of Alpha to Beta and Theta to Beta. The analysis of the power ratio has further validated that the Theta/Beta power ratio can be used as feature of stress and thus, imported its dataset into k-means clustering to divide the subjects into three categories. Lastly, the clustering model is fed into support vector machine (SVM) to classify three-level stress which are of low, moderate and high. The result has signified the feasibility and effectiveness of the three-level stress classification at overall classification accuracy of 90% by applying Theta/Beta power ratio of the brain signals as well as using SVM classifier. Abstract

Indoor farming is among the approaches which can be adapted to improve agricultural sustainability and ensure the food security of countries. However, adopting indoor farming requires a high amount of energy to sustain the system. Incorporating a renewable energy system for supplying power to agricultural activities will allow the system to be more sustainable in the long run. An unconcentrated photovoltaic-thermoelectric generator (PV-TEG) hybrid system is designed based on the load requirement of an indoor farm. The hybrid system performance under Malaysia’s weather conditions was investigated and analyzed over three months. The designed system has shown its ability to provide sufficient power to the load, as well as supporting an additional load. Besides that, the TEGs power output was found to be dependent on the temperature as well as the types of connections used, where a higher temperature difference and series connection exhibited a better power output. Overall, the combination of the system showed that the addition of a TEG affects the efficiency and power output as compared to a standalone PV.
