Abstract

Amongst the micronutrients, boron (B) is required in very minute quantity, but deficiency can cause a deleterious impact on crop yield and quality, similar to any macronutrient. The critical B level in soil is usually between 0.5 and 1.0 ppm, but it varies widely depending on the crops and growing conditions. The prevalent deficiency in agricultural fields, coupled with insufficient attention to micronutrient application in field crops, creates a substantial production gap impacting growth, yield, and produce quality. A major portion of the tuber crops show extreme sensitivity to boron deficiency, which causes severe yield reduction alongside a decline in the tuber quality. Excess application may exhibit toxicity symptoms in plants since it occupies a narrow window between deficiency and toxicity. Therefore, efficient nutrient management practice, including the judicious use of boron fertilizers in terms of appropriate sources and doses, is needed to ensure the B nutrient balance in soil as well as augmenting the crop growth and yield. To understand the research and progress toward B nutrition in tuber crops, a modern machine learning approach has also been implemented. This review underscores a paradigm shift in understanding the essential role of B fertilizers in tuber crops there by suggesting a potentially sustainable solution for achieving judicious and balanced application of boron in acquiring healthy plant produce. Abstract

The experiment was conducted to assess the impactofZn and B application on sunflower growth, yield and oil content in sub-tropical condition. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with twelve treatmentsand replicated thrice. The treatments comprised viz; T1: Without fertilizers (absolute control), T2: RDF (N80P40K40), T3: N80P40K40Zn0.5%, T4: N80P40K40Zn4, T5: N80P40K40B0.2%, T6: N80P40K40B2, T7:N80P40K40Zn0.5%B0.2%,T8: N80P40K40Zn4B2, T9:N80P40K40Zn4Zn0.5%, T10: N80P40K40Zn4B0.2%, T11: N80P40K40B2B0.2%, T12: N80P40K40B2Zn0.5%.From the experimental results recorded it can be concluded that the growth and yield components of the tested crop were significantly influenced by the application of micronutrients as compared to the control (without fertilizer) and recommended dose of fertilizer alone. Among the treatmentsapplication of N80P40K40Zn4B2foundhigher diameter of capitulum (17.72 cm), number of seeds per capitulum (763), seed weight per capitulum(48.98 g), seed yield (2563 kg/ha) and oil yield (1097 kg/ha) of hybrid sunflower (variety KBSH 78) accounting 35.49%,43.25%, 26.66%, 46.50% and 51.32% more than control.

22. Arsenic acquisition pattern in different plant parts of aromatic rice cultivars

Abstract

A field trial was conducted in Gontra village under Chakdaha block of Nadia district, West Bengal during rainy (kharif) season of 2020 to assess arsenic (As) accumulation in different plant parts of aromatic rice cultivars. The field trial was laid out in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 15 treatments (aromatic rice cultivars) and three replications. Results revealed that the aromatic rice cultivar ‘Poreiton’ (collected from Manipur) showed maximum arsenic accumulation in grain (0.93 mg/kg) and husk (1.68 mg/kg); being statistically at par with cultivars ‘Wairi-Chakhao’ (0.87 and 1.55 mg/kg grain and husk, respectively) and ‘'Lalbadshabhog’ (0.74 and 1.52 mg/kg grain and husk, respectively). Least arsenic accumulation was found in the cultivar ‘Tulaipanji’ (0.17 and 0.71 mg/kg grain and husk, respectively). Hence, the cultivar ‘Tulaipanji’ grain was found to be safe for human consumption, as the grain As content within the safe limit as per WHO’s guideline (maximum 0.2 mg/kg of white rice). But other cultivars need some mitigation strategies with respect to water and nutrient management so that grain As content is kept within the safe limit.

Abstract

Sunflower; as a contingent crop, is often exposed to boron (B) deficiency in soils of low fertility. The deficiency and toxicity of B being very narrow, warrants the need for its proper estimation in soil-plant systems through specific extractants. To facilitate this, a pot experiment was conducted with sunflower (cv. PAC 361) in 15 selected soil series. Five B doses (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg kg−1) were applied to three replications. Soil B was extracted using six extractants (Hot-Water, DTPA-Sorbitol, Mehlich-3, Hot-CaCl2, KH2PO4, and Tartaric acid) and compared against plant parameters at 80 days after seedling emergence and harvest. The B extracted was in the order of Mehlich-3 > Hot-CaCl2 > KH2PO4 > Hot-Water > Tartaric acid > DTPA-Sorbitol. Standard correlation between soil and plant B revealed Mehlich-3 as the best soil extractant (r = 0.98**, stalk at 80 DAE); (r = 0.98**, seed at harvest) and (r = 0.97**, stalk at harvest). The critical limits of extractable B estimated by the statistical procedure were 0.47 mg kg−1 for Mehlich-3 extractable B in soil, 34.0 mg kg−1 for sunflower 3rd leaf B (at 80 DAE), and 19.06 mg kg−1 for sunflower seed B (at harvest). Abstract

Effective broad-spectrum herbicides are needed to address the issues of herbicide resistance and weed shifts in common cropping systems. A field experiment was conducted in 2016 and 2017 in West Bengal, India to compare the performance of three post-emergence herbicides (bispyribac-sodium; fenoxaprop-p-ethyl; penoxsulam) in monsoon rice (Oryza sativa L.) and their residual effects on succeeding rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.). Rice yield loss due to competition with Echinochloa colona (L.) Link, Leersia hexandra Sw., Cyperus iria L., Ludwigia parviflora L., and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm f.) C. Presl. Ex Kunth was 64% compared with weed-free control. Bispyribac-sodium 10% SC applied at 30 g a.i. ha−1 20 days after transplanting reduced weed density over the weedy control, ranging from 37% (M. vaginalis) to 87% (L. hexandra). Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and penoxsulam applied, respectively, at 86 and 20 g a.i. ha−1 were effective in controlling grasses, but less effective against sedges and broadleaves. Bispyribac-sodium application resulted in highest rice yield (5.45 t ha−1), net return (Indian Rupees 42,677 ha−1), and benefit cost ratio (1.72). Bispyribac-sodium had neither adverse effect on soil microbes nor phytotoxic effect on rice and subsequent rapeseed. We recommend bispyribac-sodium for weed control in transplanted rice under rice-rapeseed system in eastern India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Agronomic fortification of zinc in potato production in Indian context: A review

Abstract

Micronutrient has received greater attention in crop production because the widespread deficiency of micronutrient is coming forward gradually. The key reasons for such deficiency are an intensification of cropping system, adoption of high yielding cultivars of crops and modern irrigation facilities. The greater use of high analysis chemical fertilizers instead of organic sources of plant nutrients (farmyard manure, composts etc.) is also another contributing factor to this problem. This modern technology of crop production causes a serious depletion of different micronutrients reserve in soil resulting in their severe deficiency in many countries. Potato is the widely cultivated vegetable crops throughout India. In potato cultivation, the application of some micro-nutrients (zinc/Zn, boron/B etc.) causes significant increase in foliage at the initial stage of crop growth, while the translocation of assimilates become higher in later stages, ultimately leads to higher yield. Zinc plays a very important role in increasing the production as well as the quality of potato tubers. Zinc loading in potato through foliar as well as soil-applied Zn increases Zn concentration in potato tuber up to 3-4 times which is quite higher than most of the commonly known crops. Zn fertilization has been found to increase ascorbic acid content, but it reduces the tyrosine and total phenol content in tubers, and thereby improves the processing quality. Finally, Zn-fortified potato can be a potential option for mitigating wide spread Zn-driven malnutrition in the Asian countries.
