Geometric frustration in two-dimensional Ising models allows for a wealth of exotic universal behavior, both Ising and non-Ising, in the presence of quantum fluctuations. In particular, the triangular antiferromagnet and Villain model in a transverse field can be understood through distinct XY pseudospins, but have qualitatively similar phase diagrams including a quantum phase transition in the (2+1)-dimensional XY universality class. While the quantum dynamics of modestly-sized systems can be simulated classically using tensor-based methods, these methods become infeasible for larger lattices. Here we perform both classical and quantum simulations of these dynamics, where our quantum simulator is a superconducting quantum annealer. Our observations on the triangular lattice suggest that the dominant quench dynamics are not described by the quantum Kibble-Zurek scaling of the quantum phase transition, but rather a faster coarsening dynamics in an effective two-dimensional XY model in the ordered phase. Similarly, on the Villain model, the scaling exponent does not match the Kibble-Zurek expectation. The magnetic interactions in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Dirac semimetal candidate SrMnSb$_2$ are investigated using \textit{ab initio} linear response theory and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Our calculations reveal that the first two nearest in-plane couplings ($J_1$ and $J_2$) are both AFM in nature, indicating a significant degree of spin frustration, which aligns with experimental observations. The orbital resolution of exchange interactions shows that $J_1$ and $J_2$ are dominated by direct and superexchange, respectively. In a broader context, a rigid-band model suggests that electron doping fills the minority spin channel and results in a decrease in the AFM coupling strength for both $J_1$ and $J_2$. To better compare with INS measurements, we calculate the spin wave spectra within a linear spin wave theory, utilizing the computed exchange parameters. Although the calculated spin wave spectra somewhat overestimate the magnon bandwidth, they exhibit overall good agreement with measurements from INS experiments.

The Mott insulator $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has generated great interest in the community due to its possible field-induced Kitaev quantum spin liquid state. Despite enormous effort spent trying to obtain the form of the low energy Hamiltonian, there is currently no agreed upon set of parameters which is able to explain all of the data. A key piece of missing information lies in the determination of the magnetic form factor of Ru$^{3+}$, particularly for a true quantitative treatment of inelastic neutron scattering data. Here we present the experimentally derived magnetic form factor of Ru$^{3+}$ in the low spin 4$d^5$ state using polarized neutron diffraction within the paramagnetic regime on high quality single crystals of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. We observe strong evidence of an anisotropic form factor, expected of the spin-orbit coupled $j_{\textrm{eff}} = \frac{1}{2}$ ground state. We model the static magnetization density in increasing complexity from simple isotropic cases, to a multipolar expansion, and finally \emph{ab initio} calculations of the generalized $j_{\textrm{eff}} = \frac{1}{2}$ ground state. Comparison of both single ion models and inclusion of Cl$^-$ anions support the presence of hybridization of Ru$^{3+}$ with the surrounding Cl$^{-}$ ligands.

Gibbs states (i.e., thermal states) can be used for several applications such as quantum simulation, quantum machine learning, quantum optimization, and the study of open quantum systems. Moreover, semi-definite programming, combinatorial optimization problems, and training quantum Boltzmann machines can all be addressed by sampling from well-prepared Gibbs states. With that, however, comes the fact that preparing and sampling from Gibbs states on a quantum computer are notoriously difficult tasks. Such tasks can require large overhead in resources and/or calibration even in the simplest of cases, as well as the fact that the implementation might be limited to only a specific set of systems. We propose a method based on sampling from a quasi-distribution consisting of tensor products of mixed states on local clusters, i.e., expanding the full Gibbs state into a sum of products of local "Gibbs-cumulant" type states easier to implement and sample from on quantum hardware. We begin with presenting results for 4-spin linear chains with XY spin interactions, for which we obtain the $ZZ$ dynamical spin-spin correlation functions. Many-body entangled quantum spin systems exhibit emergent phenomena such as topological quantum spin liquids with distinct excitation spectra accessed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Here we simulate the dynamics of a quantum spin dimer, the basic quantum unit of emergent many-body spin systems. While canonical Trotterization methods require deep circuits precluding long time-scale simulations, we demonstrate 'direct' Resource-Efficient Fast-forwarding (REFF) measurements with short-depth circuits that can be used to capture longer time dynamics on quantum hardware. The temporal evolution of the 2-spin correlation coefficients enabled the calculation of the dynamical structure factor $S(\mathbf{Q},\omega)$ - the key component of the neutron scattering cross-section. We simulate the triplet gap and the triplet splitting of the quantum dimer with sufficient fidelity to compare to experimental neutron data. Novel magnetic materials are important for future technological advances. Theoretical and numerical calculations of ground state properties are essential in understanding these materials, however, computational complexity limits conventional methods for studying these states. Here we investigate an alternative approach to preparing materials ground states using the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) on near-term quantum computers. We study classical Ising spin models on unit cells of square, Shastry-Sutherland, and triangular lattices, with varying field amplitudes and couplings in the material Hamiltonian. We find relationships between the theoretical QAOA success probability and the structure of the ground state, indicating that only a modest number of measurements ($\lesssim100$) are needed to find the ground state of our nine-spin Hamiltonians, even for parameters leading to frustrated magnetism. We further demonstrate the approach in calculations on a trapped-ion quantum computer and succeed in recovering each ground state of the Shastry-Sutherland unit cell with probabilities close to ideal theoretical values. The results demonstrate the viability of QAOA for materials ground state preparation in the frustrated Ising limit, giving important first steps towards larger sizes and more complex Hamiltonians where quantum computational advantage may prove essential in developing a systematic understanding of novel materials., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures; v2 close to published version

Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering data contain rich information about the structure and dynamics of a material. Yet the challenge of matching sophisticated theoretical models with large data volumes is compounded by computational complexity and the ill-posed nature of the inverse scattering problem. Here we utilize a novel machine-learning-assisted framework featuring multiple neural network architectures to address this via high-dimensional modeling and numerical methods. A comprehensive data set of diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measured on the Kitaev material $\alpha-$RuCl$_3$ is processed to extract its Hamiltonian. Semiclassical Landau-Lifshitz dynamics and Monte-Carlo simulations were employed to explore the parameter space of an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A machine-learning-assisted iterative algorithm was developed to map the uncertainty manifold to match experimental data; a non-linear autoencoder used to undertake information compression; and Radial Basis networks utilized as fast surrogates for diffraction and dynamics simulations to predict potential spin Hamiltonians with uncertainty. The critical point and the critical exponents for a phase transition can be determined using the Finite-Size Scaling (FSS) analysis. This method assumes that the phase transition occurs only in the infinite size limit. However, there has been a lot of interest recently in quantum phase transitions occuring in finite size systems such as a single two-level system interacting with a single bosonic mode e.g. in the Quantum Rabi Model (QRM). Since, these phase transitions occur at a finite system size, the traditional FSS method is rendered inapplicable for these cases. For cases like this, we propose an alternative FSS method in which the truncation of the system is done in the Hilbert space instead of the physical space. This approach has previously been used to calculate the critical parameters for stability and symmetry breaking of electronic structure configurations of atomic and molecular systems. We calculate the critical point for the quantum phase transition of the QRM using this approach. We also provide a protocol to implement this method on a digital quantum simulator using the Quantum Restricted Boltzmann Machine algorithm. Our work opens up a new direction in the study of quantum phase transitions on quantum devices.

We report detailed measurements of the Onsager-like planar thermal Hall conductivity $\kappa_{xy}$ in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, a spin-liquid candidate of topical interest. With the thermal current ${\bf J}_{\rm Q}$ and magnetic field $\bf B\parallel a$ (zigzag axis), the observed $\kappa_{xy}/T$ varies strongly with temperature $T$ (1-10 K). The results are well-described by bosonic edge excitations which evolve to topological magnons at large $B$. Fits to $\kappa_{xy}/T$ yield a Chern number $\sim 1$ and a band energy $\omega_1\sim$1 meV, in agreement with sharp modes seen in electron spin-resonance experiments. Metadamping is the phenomenon of either enhanced or diminished intrinsic dissipation in a material stemming from the material's internal structural dynamics. It has been previously shown that a locally resonant elastic metamaterial may be designed to exhibit higher or lower dissipation compared to a statically equivalent phononic crystal with the same amount of prescribed damping. Here we reveal that even further dissipation, or alternatively further reduction of loss, may be reached in an inertially amplified metamaterial that is also statically equivalent and has the same amount of prescribed damping. This is demonstrated by a passive configuration whereby an attenuation peak is generated by the motion of a mass supported by an inclined lever arm. We further show that by coupling this inertially amplified attenuation peak with that of a local resonance attenuation peak, a trade-off between the intensity of spatial attenuation versus temporal attenuation is realized for a range of the inclination angles. Design for performance along this trade-off is therefore possible by adjustment of the lever angle. These findings open the way for highly expanding the Ashby space for stiffness-damping capacity or stiffness-spatial attenuation capacity through design of the internal structure of materials., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Understanding phonons in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is critical to analyze the controversy around the observation of the half-integer thermal quantum Hall effect. While many studies have focused on the magnetic excitations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, its vibrational excitation spectrum has remained relatively unexplored. We investigate the phonon structure of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ via inelastic neutron scattering experiments and density functional theory calculations. Our results show excellent agreement between experiment and first principles calculations. After validating our theoretical model, we extrapolate the low energy phonon properties. We find that the phonons in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ that either propagate or vibrate in the out-of-plane direction have significantly reduced velocities, and therefore have the potential to dominate the observability of the elusive half integer plateaus in the thermal Hall conductance. In addition, we use low-energy interlayer phonons to resolve the low temperature stacking structure of our large crystal of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, which we find to be consistent with that of the $R\bar{3}$ space group, in agreement with neutron diffraction., Comment: The first two authors contributed equally
