We study the invariance of N = 1, d = 4 supergravity solutions under diffeormophisms and show that, in order to obtain consistent conditions ("Killing equations") invariant under local supersymmetry transformations, one has to perform supersymmetry transformations generated by the superpartner of the vector that generates standard diffeomorphisms, just as a superspace analysis indicates. Using these transformations, we construct a Noether-Wald charge of N = 1, d = 4 supergravity with fermionic contributions which is diff- Lorentz- and supersymmetry-invariant (up to a total derivative). This paper explores the process of vacuum decay in supersymmetric models related to flux compactifications. In particular, we describe these instabilities within supersymmetric Lagrangians for a single three-form multiplet. This multiplet combines scalar fields, representing the moduli fields in four dimensions, with 3-form fields that influence the potential for these moduli via the integer flux of their associated 4-form field strength. Furthermore, using supersymmetry as a guide we obtain the form of the couplings of these fields to the membranes that act as sources to the 3-form potentials. Adding small supersymmetry breaking terms to these Lagrangians one can obtain instanton solutions describing the decay of the vacua in these models by the formation of a membrane bubble. These instantons combine the usual Coleman-de Luccia and the Brown-Teitelboim formalisms in a single unified model. We study simple numerical examples of theories with and without gravity in this new framework and generalize known Euclidean methods to accomodate the simulataneous inclusion of scalar fields and charged membranes to these instanton solutions. Moreover, we show explicitly in these examples how one recovers the static supersymmetric solutions in the limiting case where the supersymmetry breaking terms vanish. In this limit, the bubble becomes infinite and flat and represents a hybrid between the usual supersymmetric domain walls of field theory models and the brane solutions interpolating between the supersymmetric vacua; a sort of dressed supermembrane BPS solution. Finally, we briefly comment on the implications of these solutions in cosmological models based on the String Theory Landscape where these type of 4d effective theories could be relevant in inflationary scenarios. The Hamiltonian formulation for nonlinear chiral 2-form electrodynamics in six-dimensional Minkowski spacetime is used to show that small-amplitude plane-wave perturbations of a generic uniform constant 'magnetic' background exhibit trirefringence: all three independent wave-polarisations have distinct dispersion relations. While two coincide for Lorentz invariant theories, all three coincide uniquely for the chiral 2-form theory on the worldvolume of the M5-brane of M-theory. We argue that this is because, in this M-theory context, the waves propagate in a planar M5-M2-M2 bound-state preserving 16 supersymmetries. Found is the complete nonlinear action of multiple D0-brane system (mD0) in three dimensional type II superspace which is invariant under rigid D = 3 N = 2 spacetime supersymmetry and under local worldline supersymmetry generalizing the κ-symmetry of single D0-brane action. We show that a particular representative of this family of actions can be obtained by dimensional reduction of the action of D = 4 non-Abelian multiwaves (nAmW), the D = 4 counterpart of 11D multiple M-wave (mM0) action, that we have also constructed in this paper. This reduction results in an action with is nonlinear due to the presence of a certain function ℳ(ℋ) of the relative motion Hamiltonian ℋ, the counterpart of which enters the 4D nAmW action linearly. Curiously, the action possesses double supersymmetry also for an arbitrary function ℳ(ℋ). In particular for ℳ = const we find a dynamical system describing the sum of single D0 action and the action of 1d dimensional reduction of the D = 3 N = 2 SYM coupled to the worldline supergravity induced by the embedding of the center of energy motion into the D = 3 N = 2 superspace. We give a prescription for N = 1 supersymmetrization of any (four-dimensional) nonlinear electrodynamics theory with a Lagrangian density satisfying a convexity condition that we relate to semi-classical unitarity. We apply it to the one-parameter ModMax extension of Maxwell electrodynamics that preserves both electromagnetic duality and conformal invariance, and its Born-Infeld-like generalization, proving that duality invariance is preserved. We also establish superconformal invariance of the superModMax theory by showing that its coupling to supergravity is super-Weyl invariant. The higher-derivative photino-field interactions that appear in any supersymmetric nonlinear electrodynamics theory are removed by an invertible nonlinear superfield redefinition. Relations between the various formulations of nonlinear p-form electrodynamics with conformal-invariant weak-field and strong-field limits are clarified, with a focus on duality invariant (2n − 1)-form electrodynamics and chiral 2n-form electrodynamics in Minkowski spacetime of dimension D = 4n and D = 4n + 2, respectively. We exhibit a new family of chiral 2-form electrodynamics in D = 6 for which these limits exhaust the possibilities for conformal invariance; the weak-field limit is related by dimensional reduction to the recently discovered ModMax generalisation of Maxwell's equations. For n > 1 we show that the chiral 'strong-field' 2n-form electrodynamics is related by dimensional reduction to a new Sl(2; ℝ)-duality invariant theory of (2n − 1)-form electrodynamics. We present the complete supersymmetric and κ-symmetric action for the 4- dimensional interacting system of open supermembrane, dynamical supergravity and 3-form matter multiplets. The cases of a single 3-form matter multiplet and a quite generic model with a number of nonlinear interacting double 3-form multiplets are considered. In all cases the fermionic parameter of the κ-symmetry is subject to two apparently different projection conditions which suggests that the ground state of the system, in particular a domain junction, might preserve at most 1/4 of the spacetime supersymmetry. The boundary term of the open supermembrane action, needed to preserve the κ-symmetry, has the meaning of the action of a superstring. The Wess-Zumino term of this superstring action is expressed in terms of real linear superfield playing the role of Stückelberg field for the 3-form gauge symmetry. We construct a manifestly supersymmetric and kappa-symmetry invariant worldvolume action describing the coupling of a dynamical membrane to an N = 1, D = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills multiplet. Worldvolume scalar fields in this action are a Gold-stone and a Goldstino associated with spontaneous breaking, by the membrane, of half of N = 1, D = 4 supersymmetry. When the Goldstone fields are set to zero, the model reduces to an N = 1, d = 3 SU(N) Chern-Simons theory induced by the SYM coupling. We show that, when the membrane couples to the Veneziano-Yankielowicz (VY) effective theory of the N = 1 SYM, it sources VY bulk field equations, separates two distinct SYM vacua and provides the missing contribution to the tension of BPS saturated domain-wall configurations, for which the membrane serves as a core. As a result, we obtain explicit BPS domain-wall solutions in the Veneziano-Yankielowicz theory. We also briefly discuss a supersymmetric system of an open membrane having a string attached to its boundary and coupled to a massive extension of the Veneziano-Yankielowicz model. We consider four-dimensional N = 1 supergravity models of a kind appearing in string flux compactifications. It has been recently shown that, by using double three-form multiplets instead of ordinary chiral multiplets, one can promote to dynamical variables (part of) the quantized numbers appearing in the flux-induced superpotential. We show that double three-form multiplets naturally transform under symplectic dualities associated with the special Kähler structure that characterizes their scalar sector. Furthermore, we discuss how to couple membranes which carry arbitrary 'electric-magnetic' charges. The complete action is supersymmetric, kappa-symmetric and duality covariant. As an application, we derive the flow equations for BPS domain walls sourced by membranes and give simple analytic examples of their solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently proposed exceptional field theories (EFTs) making manifest the duality E n ( n ) symmetry, first observed as nonlinearly realized symmetries of the maximal d = 3 , 4 , . . . , 9 supergravity ( n = 11 − d ) and containing 11D and type IIB supergravity as sectors, were formulated in enlarged spacetimes. In the case of E 7 ( 7 ) EFT such an enlarged spacetime can be identified with the bosonic body of the d = 4 central charge superspace Σ ( 60 | 32 ) , the N = 8 d = 4 superspace completed by 56 additional bosonic coordinates associated to central charges of the maximal d = 4 supersymmetry algebra. In this paper we show how the hypothesis on the relation of all the known E n ( n ) EFTs, including n = 8 , with supersymmetry leads to the conjecture on existence of 11D exceptional field theory living in 11D tensorial central charge superspace Σ ( 528 | 32 ) and underlying all the E n ( n ) EFTs with n = 2 , . . . , 8 , and probably the double field theory (DFT). We conjecture the possible form of the section conditions of such an 11D EFT and show that quite generic solutions of these can be generated by superparticle models the ground states of which preserve from one half to all but one supersymmetry. The properties of these superparticle models are briefly discussed. We argue that, upon quantization, their quantum states should describe free massless non-conformal higher spin fields in D = 11 . The covariant and kappa-symmetric action for superstring in direct product of two flat D = 10 N = 1 superspaces is presented. It is given by the sum of supersymmetric generalization of two copies of chiral boson actions constructed with the use of the Pasti–Sorokin–Tonin (PST) technique. The chirality of 8 ‘left’ bosons and 8 ‘left’ fermions and the anti-chirality of their ‘right’ counterparts are obtained as gauge fixed version of the equations of motion, so that the physical degrees of freedom are essentially those of the II Green–Schwarz superstring. The D = 10 pure spinor constraint can be solved in terms of spinor moving frame variables and eight-component complex null vector , , which can be related to the κ-symmetry ghost. Using this and similar solutions for the conjugate pure spinor and other elements of the non-minimal pure spinor formalism, we present a (hopefully useful) reformulation of the measure of the pure spinor path integral for superstring in terms of products of Cartan forms corresponding to the coset of 10D Lorentz group and to the coset of complex orthogonal group SO(8, C). Abstract: We propose superfield equations in tensorial -extended superspaces to describe the supersymmetric generalizations of free conformal higher spin theories. These can be obtained by quantizing a superparticle model in -extended tensorial superspace. The -extended higher spin supermultiplets just contain scalar and ‘spinor’ fields in tensorial space so that, in contrast with the standard (super)space approach, no nontrivial generalizations of the Maxwell or Einstein equations to tensorial space appear when . For , the higher spin-tensorial components of the extended tensorial superfields are expressed through additional scalar and spinor fields in tensorial space which obey the same free higher spin equations, but that are axion-like in the sense that they possess Peccei–Quinn-like symmetries. Abstract: We present the superfield action for the dynamical , supermembrane in interaction with a dynamical scalar multiplet and use it to derive the superfield equations of motion. These include the supermembrane equations, which formally coincide with equations of supermembrane in a background of the (off-shell) scalar multiplet, and the special chiral superfield equations with supermembrane source. In the case when the scalar supermultiplet part of the action contains only the simplest kinetic term we have also extracted the spacetime component field equations from the superfield equations and solve these in the leading order on supermembrane tension. Abstract: We study the possibility to describe multiple M0-brane system in the frame of superembedding approach. The simplest framework is provided by the maximally supersymmetric non-Abelian Yang–Mills supermultiplet on the superspace the embedding of which to the target supergravity superspace is determined by the so-called superembedding equation, characteristic of the worldline superspace of a single M0-brane. Abstract: We develop superembedding approach to multiple D-particle (D0-brane) system. In flat target type IIA superspace this produces the supersymmetric and Lorentz covariant version of the Matrix model equations. The equations following from our superembedding approach to multiple D0 in curved type IIA superspace shows the Myers ‘dielectric brane effect’, i.e. interaction with higher form gauge fields which do not interact with a single D0-brane. Abstract: We consider the covariant quantization of the massless superparticle (M0-brane) in the spinor moving frame or twistor-like Lorentz harmonics formulation. The action involves the set of 16 constrained 32 component Majorana spinors, the spinor Lorentz harmonics parametrizing (as homogeneous coordinates, modulo gauge symmetries) the celestial sphere . There presence allows us to separate covariantly the first and the second class constraints of the model. We show that, after taking into account the second class constraints by means of Dirac brackets and after further reducing the first class constraints algebra, the system is described in terms of a simple BRST charge associated to the , supersymmetry algebra. The study of the cohomology of this BRST operator requires a regularization by complexifying the bosonic ghosts for the κ-symmetry, , and further reduction of the regularized cohomology problem to the one for a simpler complex BRST charge . This latter is essentially the pure spinor BRST charge by Berkovits, but with a composite pure spinor constructed from the complex spinor with zero norm, , and the spinorial harmonics . This exhibits a possible origin of the complexity (non-Hermiticity) characteristic of the Berkovits pure spinor approach. The simple structure of the non-trivial cohomology of the M0-brane BRST charge finds explanation in the properties that the superparticle action exhibits in the so-called ‘covariantized light-cone’ basis, where the M0-brane action is expressed in terms of κ-symmetry invariant variables. The set of gauge symmetries in this basis reduces to the Borel subgroup of . Imposing their generators as conditions on the superparticle wavefunctions, we arrive at the covariant quantization in terms of physical degrees of freedom which hints possible hidden symmetries of supergravity. Besides , which in the twistor like Lorentz harmonic formulation is seen already at the classical level, we discuss also some indirect arguments in favor of the possible symmetry. Abstract: To exhibit the possible origin of the inner complexity of the Berkovits''s pure spinor approach, we consider the covariant BRST quantization of the massless superparticle (M0-brane) in its spinor moving frame or twistor-like Lorentz harmonics formulation. The presence of additional twistor-like variables (spinor harmonics) allows us to separate covariantly the first and the second class constraints. After taking into account the second class constraints by means of Dirac brackets and after further reducing the first class constraints algebra, the dynamical system is described by the cohomology of a simple BRST charge associated to the , supersymmetry algebra. The calculation of the cohomology of this requires a regularization which implies the complexification of the bosonic ghost associated to the κ-symmetry and further leads to a complex (non-Hermitian) BRST charge which is essentially the ‘pure spinor’ BRST charge by Berkovits, but with a composite pure spinor. Abstract: We derive and carry out a detailed analysis of the equations of motion of the type IIB D-branes in generic supergravity backgrounds with fluxes making account of the worldvolume Born–Infeld gauge field and putting a special emphasis on the structure of the Dirac equation for Dp-brane fermionic modes. We present an explicit form of the worldvolume field equations for each of the Dp-branes in the cases in which the Neveu–Schwarz flux and the Ramond–Ramond p-form flux along the Dp-brane worldvolume are zero and the supergravity backgrounds do not necessarily induce the worldvolume Born–Infeld flux. We then give several examples of D3-, D5- and D7-brane configurations in which the worldvolume Born–Infeld flux is intrinsically non-zero and therefore must be taken into account in studying problems where such branes are involved. Abstract: The underlying gauge group structure of the D=11 Cremmer–Julia–Scherk supergravity becomes manifest when its three-form field A3 is expressed through a set of one-form gauge fields, , , η1α, and Ea, ψα. These are associated with the generators of the elements of a family of enlarged supersymmetry algebras parametrized by a real number s. We study in detail the composite structure of A3 extending previous results by D’Auria and Fré, stress the equivalence of the above problem to the trivialization of a standard supersymmetry algebra cohomology four-cocycle on the enlarged superalgebras, and discuss its possible dynamical consequences. To this aim we consider the properties of the first order supergravity action with a composite A3 field and find the set of extra gauge symmetries that guarantee that the field theoretical degrees of freedom of the theory remain the same as with a fundamental A3. The extra gauge symmetries are also present in the so–called rheonomic treatment of the first order D=11 supergravity action when A3 is composite. Our considerations on the composite structure of A3 provide one more application of the idea that there exists an extended superspace coordinates/fields correspondence. They also suggest that there is a possible embedding of D=11 supergravity into a theory defined on the enlarged superspace . [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We derive a duality-symmetric action for type IIA D=10 supergravity by the Kaluza–Klein dimensional reduction of the duality-symmetric action for D=11 supergravity with the 3-form and 6-form gauge field. We then double the bosonic fields arising as a result of the Kaluza–Klein dimensional reduction and add mass terms to embrace the Romans's version, so that in its final form the bosonic part of the action contains the dilaton, NS–NS and RR potentials of the standard type IIA supergravity as well as their duals, the corresponding duality relations are deduced directly from the action. We discuss the relation of our approach to the doubled field formalism by Cremmer, Julia, Lu¨ and Pope, complete the extension of this construction to the supersymmetric case and lift it onto the level of the proper duality-symmetric action. We also find a new dual formulation of type IIA D=10 supergravity in which the NS–NS two-form potential is replaced with its six-form counterpart. A generalization of the embedding approach for d-dimensional gravity based upon pbrane theories is proposed. We prove that the D-dimensional p-brane coupled to an antisymmetric tensor field of rank (p+1) provides the dynamical basis for the description of d = (p+1)-dimensional gravity in the isometric embedding formalism. By that we mean that the equations of motion following from this action describe any (p+1)dimensional space-time (at least locally) once the antisymmetric tensor field is chosen appropriately. "Physical" matter appears in such an approach as a manifestation of a D-dimensional antisymmetric tensor (generalized Kalb-Ramond) background. For the simplest case, the Lorentz harmonic formulation of the bosonic string in a Kalb-Ramond background and its relation to a first order Einstein-Cartan approach for (d = 2)-dimensional gravity is analyzed in some detail. We show that a general Poisson-sigma model structure emerges in this case. For the minimal choice of a free D = 3 string an interesting "dual" formulation is found which has the structure of a Jackiw-Teitelboim theory, coupled minimally to a massive scalar field. Our approach is intended to serve as a preparation for the study of d-dimensional supergravity theory, either starting from the generalized action of free supersymmetric (d-1)-branes or D[sub (d-1)]-branes, or from the corresponding geometric equations ("rheotropic" conditions). We propose doubly supersymmetric actions in terms of n = 2 (D - 2) worldline superfields for N = 2 superparticles in D = 3, 4 and type IIA D = 6 superspaces. These actions are obtained by dimensional reduction of superfield actions for N = 1 superparticles in D = 4, 6, 10, respectively. We show that in all these models geometrodynamical constraints on target-superspace coordinates do not put the theory on the mass shell, and so the actions constructed consistently describe the dynamics of the corresponding N = 2 superparticles. We also find that, in contrast to the IIA D = 6 superparticle, a chiral IIB D = 6 superparticle, which is not obtainable by dimensional reduction from N = 1, D = 10, is described by superfield constraints which produce dynamical equations. We consider firstly simple D=4 superalgebra with six real tensorial central charges Z[sub μν], and discuss its possible realizations in massive and massless cases. Massless case is dynamically realized by generalized Ferber–Shirafuji (FS) model with fundamental bosonic spinor coordinates. The Lorentz invariance is not broken due to the realization of central charges generators in terms of bosonic spinors. The model contains four fermionic coordinates and possesses three κ-symmetries thus providing the BPS configuration preserving 3/4 of the target space supersymmetries. We show that the physical degrees of freedom (eight real bosonic and one real Grassmann variable) of our model can be described by OSp(8|1) supertwistor. The relation with recent superparticle model by Rudychev and Sezgin is pointed out. Finally we propose a higher-dimensional generalization of our model with one real fundamental bosonic spinor. D=10 model describes massless superparticle with composite tensorial central charges and in D=11 we obtain zero-superbrane model with nonvanishing mass which is generated dynamically. Abstract: We develop the superfield description of the Bagger–Lambert–Gustavsson (BLG) model in its Nambu bracket (NB) realization. The basic ingredient is the octet of scalar , superfields depending also on the coordinates of a compact three-dimensional space . It is restricted by the superembedding-like equation, , which can be treated as covariantization of the linearized superembedding equation for supermembrane (M2-brane) with respect to volume preserving diffeomorphisms of . The curvatures of SDiff3 connection are expressed through by the superfield generalization of the BLG Chern–Simons equation (super-CS equation). Tree amplitudes of 10D supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) and 11D supergravity (SUGRA) are collected in multi-particle counterparts of analytic on-shell superfields. These have essentially the same form as their chiral 4D counterparts describing N=4 SYM and N=8 SUGRA, but with components dependent on a different set of bosonic variables. These are the D=10 and D=11 spinor helicity variables, the set of which includes the spinor frame variable (Lorentz harmonics) and a scalar density, and generalized homogeneous coordinates of the coset SOD−2SOD−4⊗U1 (internal harmonics).We present an especially convenient parametrization of the spinor harmonics (Lorentz covariant gauge fixed with the use of an auxiliary gauge symmetry) and use this to find (a gauge fixed version of) the 3-point tree superamplitudes of 10D SYM and 11D SUGRA which generalize the 4 dimensional anti-MHV superamplitudes.
