Abstract

Road safety applications for automotive scenarios rely on the ability to estimate vehicle positions with high precision. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and, in particular, the global positioning system (GPS), are commonly used for self localization. But, especially in urban vehicular scenarios, due to obstructions, they may not provide the requirements for crucial position-based applications. In this paper, we investigate the potential of GPS-free positioning schemes and, in particular, we compute the ultimate performance, i.e., Cramér–Rao lower bounds (CRLB), of localization schemes in which each vehicle estimates its position exploiting range and/or angle measurements of an assigned set of landmarks with a known position. A modified version of the adaptive side-lobe blanker (ASB) consisting of a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT)-based subspace detector followed by the adaptive coherence estimator is proposed. The probability of false alarm and the probability of detection are evaluated in closed form in homogeneous environment and by using Monte Carlo simulation for the other considered cases.

Abstract

This paper addresses blind multiuser detection in a direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) network in presence of both multiple-access interference and intersymbol interference. In particular, it considers a DS-CDMA system where [KAPPA] out of [NU] users are transmitting; the [NU] admissible spreading codes are known, and so is the code of the user to be demodulated. The number of interferers, the signatures of a certain number, possibly all, of the interferers, and the channel impulse response of each active user are unknown. The spreading codes of the unknown interferers are determined via a procedure that exploits the knowledge of the set of admissible transmitted codes and of the known active codes. The procedure applies to both single and multiple receiving antennas. The performance assessment of a blind decorrelating detector, implemented by resorting to the proposed identification procedure, shows that it outperforms a plain subspace-based blind decorrelator for small sizes of the estimation sample. Abstract

Aims: Although oral anticoagulants (OACs) are effective in preventing stroke in older people with atrial fibrillation (AF), they are often underused in this particularly high-risk population. The aim of the present study was to assess the appropriateness of OAC prescription and its associated factors in hospitalized patients aged 65years or older. Methods: Data were obtained from the retrospective phase of Simulation-based Technologies to Improve the Appropriate Use of Oral Anticoagulants in Hospitalized Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation (SIM-AF) study, held in 32 Italian internal medicine and geriatric wards. The appropriateness of OAC prescription was assessed, grouping patients in those who were and were not prescribed OACs at hospital discharge. Multivariable logistic regression was used to establish factors independently associated with the appropriateness of OAC prescription. Results: A total of 328 patients were included in the retrospective phase of the study. Of these, almost 44% (N = 143) were inappropriately prescribed OACs, being mainly underprescribed or prescribed an inappropriate antithrombotic drug (N = 88). Among the patients prescribed OACs (N=221), errors in the prescribed doses were the most frequent cause of inappropriate use (N=55). Factors associated with a higher degree of patient frailty were inversely associated with the appropriateness of OAC prescription. Conclusions: In hospitalized older patients with AF, there is still a high prevalence of inappropriate OAC prescribing. Characteristics usually related to frailty are associated with the inappropriate prescribing. These findings point to the need for targeted interventions designed for internists and geriatricians, aimed at improving the appropriate prescribing of OACs in this complex and high-risk population.

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is independently associated with a higher risk of morbidity and mortality, in particular with an increased risk of thromboembolic events [1]. Use of oral anticoagulant (OAC) drugs reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism, as well as mortality among patients with AF [1]. In recent years, the non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been proved to be at least as effective and safer than warfarin, the most widely used VKA [2], such that NOACs are the recommended choice in many patients [1]. Notwithstanding, the number of untreated patients is still relevant [3]. In particular, in the clinical setting of internal medicine and geriatric wards, previous data showed that elderly hospitalized patients with AF were largely not prescribed with OAC [4] or treated in a non-guideline adherent manner [5]. After NOACs have been marketed, a significant increase in OAC uptake was recorded, but a substantial portion of patients still does not receive the appropriate treatment based on their cardioembolic risk [3,6]. In particular, scarce data are available about NOACs use in the non-cardiologic setting. Abstract

In this paper we attack adaptive detection of extended and multiple point-like targets, embedded in Gaussian noise, without assignment of secondary data; otherwise stated, we try to get rid of the usual assumption that a distinct set of data, sharing the spectral properties of noise in the cells under test, but free of signal components, is available. At the design stage we resort to the GLRT and to an “ad hoc” two-step design procedure, possibly exploiting an upper bound on the maximum range dimension for extended targets and on the maximum number of targets for multiple point-like ones. The proposed detectors have been compared based on prediction capabilities, CFARness, and computational complexity, also in comparison to existing adaptive algorithms.

Abstract

We present an adaptive algorithm to detect multiple point-like radar targets embedded in correlated Gaussian noise. The proposed detector generalizes the ABORT idea to the detection of multiple targets [1]. More precisely, it relies to the so-called two-step Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) design procedure, which makes it possible to get rid of distinct secondary data, and, remarkably, guarantees the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) property. A preliminary performance assessment, conducted resorting to simulated data, has shown that the newlyproposed detector exhibits better rejection capabilities of mismatch signals than detector [2], at the price of a small performance loss.

Abstract

This paper addresses CFAR detection of oil slicks on the ocean surface by resorting to possibly polarimetric SAR data. The proposed GLRT-based detectors do not require secondary data (namely pixels from a slick-free area); remarkably, the performance assessment, carried out by resorting to real SAR recordings, shows that they guarantee detection capabilities comparable to those of previouslyproposed polarimetric CFAR detectors which though make use of secondary data. The preliminary performance assessment seems to indicate that processing polarimetric data does not improve detectability of oil slicks.

Abstract

In this paper we consider the problem of detecting multiple point-like targets in the presence of steering vector mismatches and Gaussian disturbance with unknown covariance matrix. To this end, we first model the actual useful signal as a vector belonging to a proper cone whose axis coincides with the whitened direction of the nominal array response. Then we develop two new robust adaptive detectors resorting to the two-step generalized-likelihood ratio test (GLRT) design procedure without assignment of a distinct set of secondary data. Finally, a performance assessment, conducted by Monte Carlo simulation, show that the proposed detectors achieve a visible performance improvement over their natural counterparts.
