The ability to define, evaluate, and implement software architectures is a fundamental skill for software engineers. However, teaching software architecture can be challenging as it requires students to be involved in real-context projects with high degrees of complexity. This involves making trade-off decisions among several quality attributes. Furthermore, the academic perception of software architecture differs from the industrial viewpoint. To address this issue, a study was conducted to identify and analyze the strategies, challenges, and course experiences used for teaching software architectures. The study analyzed 56 articles reporting on teaching experiences focused specifically on software architectures or focused on software engineering in general but discussing software architecture. The main contributions of this work include identifying strategies used in educating software architecture students aligned with the needs of the software industry. These strategies include short design projects, large development projects, and projects with actual clients. Additionally, the study compared curriculum contents in software development and architecture courses and identified recurring topics such as architecture patterns, quality attributes, and architectural views. This study also recognizes the set of skills that students of software architecture should develop during training, such as leadership and negotiation. The challenges in software architecture training were discussed, such as instructors' lack of experience in actual projects, the abstract and fuzzy nature of software architectures, and the difficulty of involving clients and industry experts. Evaluation methods commonly used in training software architects, such as surveys, pre-test/post-test, and quality metrics on architectural artifacts, were identified and described. Overall, this study guides researchers and educators in improving their software architecture courses by incorporating strategies reported by the literature review. These strategies can bring architecture courses closer to the needs and conditions of the software industry.

Dense urbanization leading to uncontrolled transformations within settlements result in flash flooding with overflowing drains leading to a greater inconvenience for the public and damage to private properties. Hence mapping of flash floods would be useful in identifying the high-risk flood zones for disaster response and urban services, during emergencies with rainfall events of high intensity. This article aims to prepare a flood hazard map of Warangal Municipal Corporation (WMC) in Telangana State, India. WMC is chronically affected due to a rise in water levels resulting in flash floods, with an increase in encroachments. The factors considered in this study are rainfall (curve number), surface slope and surface roughness, type of soil, and distance to main channel, drainage density, and land use cover. To decide the relative weight of the impact of each flood causative factors an Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) was used. Accordingly, a composite Flood Hazard Index (FHI) has been derived by using the multiple-criteria decision-making tools by integrating these into a Geographical Information System (GIS). The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) in Quantum GIS (QGIS), which is a hydrological model, was used to evaluate the projection of streamflow over the water basin and model parameters were optimized using water balance equations during calibration and validation periods.

Abstract Background Mosquitoes (Culicidae), as disease vectors, represent a risk for human health worldwide. Repeated introductions of alien mosquito species and the spread of invasive species have been recorded in different countries. Traditionally, identification of mosquitoes relies on morphological observation. However, morphology-based identification is associated with a number of potential disadvantages, such as the high level of specialisation of the operator and its limited applicability to damaged samples. In these cases, species identification is achieved through molecular methods based on DNA amplification. Molecular-based taxonomy has also enabled the development of techniques for the study of environmental DNA (eDNA). Previous studies indicated the 16S mitochondrial ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene as a promising target for this application; however, 16S rRNA sequences are available for only a limited number of mosquito species. In addition, although primers for the 16S rRNA gene were designed years ago, they are based on limited numbers of mosquito sequences. Thus, the aims of this study were to: (i) design pan-mosquito 16S rRNA gene primers; (ii) using these primers, generate a 16S rRNA gene mosquito reference library (with a focus on mosquitoes present in Italy); and (iii) compare the discriminatory power of the 16S rRNA gene with two widely used molecular markers, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial gene (COI) and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Methods A total of six mosquito genera (28 mosquito species) were included in this study: Aedes (n = 16 species), Anopheles (5 species), Coquillettidia (1 species), Culex (3 species), Culiseta (2 species) and Uranotaenia (1 species). DNA was extracted from the whole mosquito body, and more than one specimen for each species was included in the analysis. Sanger sequencing was used to generate DNA sequences that were then analysed through the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD). Phylogenetic analyses were also performed. Results Novel 16S rDNA gene, COI and ITS2 sequences were generated. The 16S rRNA gene was shown to possess sufficient informativeness for the identification of mosquito species, with a discriminatory power equivalent to that of COI. Conclusions This study contributes to the generation of DNA barcode libraries, focussed on Italian mosquitoes, with a significant increase in the number of 16S rRNA gene sequences. We hope that these novel sequences will provide a resource for studies on the biodiversity, monitoring and metabarcoding of mosquitoes, including eDNA-based approaches. Graphical abstract

The ERC Advanced Grant AN-ICON, coordinated by Andrea Pinotti and hosted by the Department of Philosophy Piero Martinetti of the University of Milan, is cross-disciplinary project that brings together aesthetics, media theory, archaeology and various disciplines to address the complexities of contemporary mediascape, particularly in the realm of Extended Reality (XR). Within XR, which encompasses Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR), ‘an-icons’ emerge as self-negating images that blur iconic boundaries and promote environmental presence. This paper provides an insight into AN-ICON’s diverse investigations dedicated to immersive technologies. It explores the cultural lineage of VR, AR and XR, their intersections with design and urban spaces, and the emerging prospects for digital memory studies. It also highlights the therapeutic, educational and prosocial potential of these media, informed by their historical and mediarchaeological backgrounds.

Background: Distal end radius fractures are common injuries treated in orthopedic practice, with varying treatment modalities influencing outcomes. Aims and Objectives: The study was designed to compare the outcomes between open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plating and K-wires plus casting in patients treated for distal end radius fractures. Materials and Methods: One hundred patients with distal end radius fractures were included and divided into two groups: Group A (ORIF with plating) and Group B (K-wires plus casting), with 50 patients in each group. Parameters included were healing time, complication rates, functional recovery, patient satisfaction scores, pain levels during recovery, and the time to return to daily activities. Results: Group A demonstrated a shorter average healing time (8 weeks) compared to Group B (9 weeks). Complication rates showed 5% malunion and 4% delayed union in Group A, against 12% and 6%, respectively, in Group B. Functional recovery was higher in Group A, with 93% grip strength and 88% range of motion recovery. Patient satisfaction was also higher in Group A (8.5 out of 10) compared to Group B (7.5 out of 10). Pain levels during recovery were lower in Group A, and the time to return to daily activities was shorter (8 weeks for Group A versus 10 weeks for Group B). Conclusion: The study suggests that ORIF with plating offers better outcomes in terms of healing time, complication rates, functional recovery, patient satisfaction, pain management, and quicker return to daily activities than K-wires plus casting for distal end radius fractures.

Abstract Introduction Acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequently seen in critically ill patients and is associated with high mortality and morbidity. However, the optimal dialysis modality in such patients remains controversial. We examined the hemodynamic tolerability of hemodialysis modalities in critically ill individuals with AKI. Methodology Critically ill patients with AKI who underwent Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Sustained Low-Efficiency Diafiltration (SLEDD-f), or Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis (SLED) dialysis were included in the study. In-hospital mortality, number of dialysis sessions, number of sessions terminated pre-maturely, change in blood pressure during dialysis, and hemodynamic instability during dialysis sessions were noted. Results A total of 264 patients were included, of which 78 received Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), 62 received Sustained Low-Efficiency Diafiltration (SLEDD-f), and 124 received Sustained Low-Efficiency Dialysis (SLED), with a total of 682 sessions among 264 patients. The commonest cause for AKI was septic shock (32.6%, n=43). All CRRT and SLEDD-f sessions were delivered without anticoagulation, and SLED was delivered without anticoagulation in 88.7% of sessions. There was a significant decrease in mean arterial pressure in CRRT compared to other modalities, with higher mortality. However, patients undergoing CRRT were more sicker. There was no significant difference between SLEDD-f and SLED in terms of outcomes. Conclusion SLEDD-f and SLED have good hemodynamic tolerability compared to CRRT. There was no significant difference in hemodynamic disturbances between SLEDD-f and SLED despite a higher proportion of patients on SLEDD-f being more critical.

Abstract Cableways alleviate access to the Alps and were crucial in establishing the skiing tourism boom of the after-war years. Moreover, cableway operators employ a large share of residents, are complemented by tourism-related services and are therefore a key economic pillar in otherwise laggard regions. We exploit comprehensive historical data of all ever-built cableways in Switzerland linked to income and population data to show how much ski area access benefits the municipalities’ economy compared to similar municipalities without such access on their territory. Evaluating difference-in-differences, we find that opening a ski area between 1940 and 1980 is related to economic growth that persists until today. Particularly, it attracted new residents and created more productive employment opportunities in tourism-related services, thereby raising incomes and tax revenues. Our results contribute to the debate of what economic risks municipalities with access to ski areas face once the decreasing snowpack forces a ski area to close.

BackgroundTwo antifibrotic medications, pirfenidone and nintedanib, are approved for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Little is known about their real-world adoption.Research questionWhat are the real-world antifibrotic utilization rates and factors associated with uptake among a national cohort of veterans with IPF?Study design and methodsThis study identified veterans with IPF who received care either provided by the Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System or non-VA care paid for by the VA. Patients who had filled at least one antifibrotic prescription through the VA pharmacy or Medicare Part D between October 15, 2014, and December 31, 2019, were identified. Hierarchical logistic regression models were used to examine factors associated with antifibrotic uptake, accounting for comorbidities, facility clustering, and follow-up time. Fine-Gray models were used to evaluate antifibrotic use by demographic factors, accounting for the competing risk of death.ResultsAmong 14,792 veterans with IPF, 17% received antifibrotics. There were significant disparities in adoption, with lower uptake associated with female sex (adjusted OR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.27-0.63; P < .001), Black race (adjusted OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.49-0.73; P < .001), and rural residence (adjusted OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.80-0.97; P = .012). Veterans who received their index diagnosis of IPF outside the VA were less likely to receive antifibrotic therapy (adjusted OR, 0.15; 95% CI, 0.10-0.22; P < .001).InterpretationThis study is the first to evaluate the real-world adoption of antifibrotic medications among veterans with IPF. Overall uptake was low, and there were significant disparities in use. Interventions to address these issues deserve further investigation.
