Search

The LAT instrument on the Fermi mission will reveal the rich spectral and temporal gamma-ray burst phenomena in the > 100 MeV band. The synergy with Fermi's GBM detectors will link these observations to those in the well explored 10-1000 keV range; the addition of the > 100 MeV band observations will resolve theoretical uncertainties about burst emission in both the prompt and afterglow phases. Trigger algorithms will be applied to the LAT data both onboard the spacecraft and on the ground. The sensitivity of these triggers will differ because of the available computing resources onboard and on the ground. We use semi-analytic techniques to evaluate the burst sensitivity of designs for the EXIST hard X-ray survey mission. Applying these techniques to the mission design proposed for the Beyond Einstein program, we find that with its very large field-of-view and faint gamma-ray burst detection threshold, EXIST will detect and localize approximately two bursts per day, a large fraction of which may be at high redshift. We estimate that EXIST's maximum sensitivity will be ~4 times greater than that of Swift's Burst Alert Telescope. Bursts will be localized to better than 40 arcsec at threshold, with a burst position as good as a few arcsec for strong bursts. EXIST's combination of three different detector systems will provide spectra from 3 keV to more than 10 MeV. Using the lag-luminosity relation and various BATSE catalogs we create a large catalog of burst redshifts, peak luminosities and emitted energies. These catalogs permit us to evaluate the lag-luminosity relation, and to study the burst energy distribution. We find that this distribution can be described as a power law with an index of alpha=1.76 +/- 0.05 (95% confidence), close to the alpha=2 predicted by the original quasi-universal jet model., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. GRB 990123 established the existence of prompt optical emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS) has been conducting a fully automated search for this kind of simultaneous low energy emission from GRBs since October 1996. Although LOTIS has obtained simultaneous, or near simultaneous, coverage of the error boxes obtained with BATSE, IPN, XTE, and BeppoSAX for several GRBs, image analysis resulted in only upper limits. The unique gamma-ray properties of GRB 990123, such as very large fluence (top 0.4%) and hard spectrum, complicate comparisons with more typical bursts. We scale and compare gamma-ray properties, and in some cases afterglow properties, from the best LOTIS events to those of GRB 990123 in an attempt to determine whether the prompt optical emission of this event is representative of all GRBs. This is the first in a series of gamma-ray burst spectroscopy catalogs from the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, each covering a different aspect of burst phenomenology. In this paper, we present time-sequences of spectral fit parameters for 156 bursts selected for either their high peak flux or fluence. All bursts have at least eight spectra in excess of 45 sigma above background and span burst durations from 1.66 to 278 s. Individual spectral accumulations are typically 128 ms long at the peak of the brightest events, but can be as short as 16 ms, depending on the type of data selected. We have used mostly high energy resolution data from the Large Area Detectors, covering an energy range of typically 28 - 1800 keV. The spectral model chosen is from a small empirically-determined set of functions, such as the well-known `GRB' function, that best fits the time-averaged burst spectra. Thus, there are generally three spectral shape parameters available for each of the 5500 total spectra: a low-energy power-law index, a characteristic break energy and possibly a high-energy power-law index. We present the distributions of the observed sets of these parameters and comment on their implications. GRB 990123 was the first burst from which simultaneous optical, X-ray and gamma-ray emission was detected; its afterglow has been followed by an extensive set of radio, optical and X-ray observations. We have studied the gamma-ray burst itself as observed by the CGRO detectors. We find that gamma-ray fluxes are not correlated with the simultaneous optical observations, and the gamma-ray spectra cannot be extrapolated simply to the optical fluxes. The burst is well fit by the standard four-parameter GRB function, with the exception that excess emission compared to this function is observed below ~15 keV during some time intervals. The burst is characterized by the typical hard-to-soft and hardness-intensity correlation spectral evolution patterns. The energy of the peak of the nu f_nu spectrum, E_p, reaches an unusually high value during the first intensity spike, 1470 +/- 110 keV, and then falls to \~300 keV during the tail of the burst. The high-energy spectrum above ~MeV is consistent with a power law with a photon index of about -3. By fluence, GRB 990123 is brighter than all but 0.4% of the GRBs observed with BATSE, clearly placing it on the -3/2 power-law portion of the intensity distribution. However, the redshift measured for the afterglow is inconsistent with the Euclidean interpretation of the -3/2 power-law. We report on the very early time search for an optical afterglow from GRB 971227 with the Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System (LOTIS). LOTIS began imaging the `Original' BATSE error box of GRB 971227 approximately 14 s after the onset of gamma-ray emission. Continuous monitoring of the position throughout the evening yielded a total of 499 images (10 s integration). Analysis of these images revealed no steady optical afterglow brighter than R=12.3 +- 0.2 in any single image. Coaddition of different combinations of the LOTIS images also failed to uncover transient optical emission. In particular, assuming a constant early time flux, no optical afterglow brighter than R=14.2 +- 0.2 was present within the first 1200 s and no optical afterglow brighter than R=15.0 +- 0.2 was present in the first 6.0 h. Follow up observations by other groups revealed a likely X-ray afterglow and a possible optical afterglow. Although subsequent deeper observations could not confirm a fading source, we show that these transients are not inconsistent with our present knowledge of the characteristics of GRB afterglows. We also demonstrate that with the upgraded thermoelectrically cooled CCDs, LOTIS is capable of either detecting very early time optical afterglow or placing stringent constraints on the relationship between the gamma-ray emission and the longer wavelength afterglow in relativistic blast wave models., Comment: 17 pages, 3 eps figures, revisions based on reviewers comments

A comprehensive search of BATSE Spectroscopy Detector data from 117 GRBs has uncovered 13 statistically significant line candidates. The case of a candidate in GRB 930916 is discussed. In the data of SD 2 there appears to be a emission line at 46 keV, however the line is not seen in the data of SD 7. We have analyzed the evolution of the spectral hardness parameter Epk as a function of fluence in gamma-ray bursts. We fit 41 pulses within 26 bursts with the trend reported by Liang & Kargatis (1996) which found that Epk decays exponentially with respect to photon fluence. We also fit these pulses with a slight modification of this trend, where Epk decays linearly with energy fluence. In both cases, we found the set of 41 pulses to be consistent with the trend. For the latter trend, which we believe to be more physical, the distribution of the decay constant is roughly log-normal, with a mean of 1.75 +/- 0.07 and a FWHM of 1.0 +/- 0.1. Regarding an earlier reported invariance in the decay constant among different pulses in a single burst, we found probabilities of 0.49 to 0.84 (depending on the test used) that such invariance would occur by coincidence, most likely due to the narrow distribution of decay constant values among pulses., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure pages, 2 table pages, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

The synchrotron shock model (SSM) for gamma-ray burst emission makes a testable prediction: that the observed low-energy power-law photon number spectral index cannot exceed -2/3 (where the photon model is defined with a positive index: dN/dE is proportional to E^alpha). We have collected time-resolved spectral fit parameters for over 100 bright bursts observed by the Burst And Transient Source Experiment on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Using this database, we find 23 bursts in which the spectral index limit of the SSM is violated. We discuss elements of the analysis methodology that affect the robustness of this result, as well as some of the escape hatches left for the SSM by theory., Comment: 8 pages plus 3 figures. The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer made a short (10 ks) observation of the radio galaxy Centaurus A on 14 August 1996. Analysis of the combined 2.5-240 keV spectrum has revealed a heavily absorbed(NH=9.42+/-0.24 e22 cm-2) primary power law (index=1.86+/-0.015) and an iron line due to fluorescence of cold matter (EW=162+/-25 eV). Flux from either a jet, primary flux scattered into the line of sight, or primary flux seen through a partial absorber was not required. The iron line width is unresolved at the 95% confidence level (sigma < 0.54 keV). No significant variability in the iron line flux is seen from measurements over the last two decades, while the overall continuum flux varied by more than a factor of four, which implies that the line emission region is distant from that of the primary emission. While radio-quiet Seyfert galaxies exhibit spectral components attributable to Compton reflection from cold matter, Cen A reveals no such component (exposed solid angle ratio < 0.09). With the discovery that the afterglows after some bursts are coincident with faint galaxies, the search for host galaxies is no longer a test of whether bursts are cosmological, but rather a test of particular cosmological models. The methodology we developed to investigate the original "no host galaxy" problem is equally valid for testing different cosmological models, and is applicable to the galaxies coincident with optical transients. We apply this methodology to a family of models where we vary the total energy of standard candle bursts. We have developed an automatic search procedure to identify low-energy spectral features in GRBs. We have searched 133,000 spectra from 117 bright bursts and have identified 12 candidate features with significances ranging from our threshold of P = 5E-5 to P = 1E-7. Several of the candidates have been examined in detail, including some with data from more than one BATSE spectroscopy detector. We are constructing a 0.6 meter telescope system to search for early time gamma-ray burst(GRB) optical counterparts. Super-LOTIS (Super-Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System) is an automated telescope system that has a 0.8 x 0.8 deg field-of-view, is sensitive to Mv ~ 19 and responds to a burst trigger within 5 min. This telescope will record images of the gamma-ray burst coordinates that is given by the GCN (GRB Coordinate Network). LOTIS (Livermore Optical Transient Imaging System) is a gamma-ray burst optical counterpart search experiment located near Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. The system is linked to the GCN (GRB Coordinates Network) real-time coordinate distribution network and can respond to a burst trigger in 6-15 seconds. LOTIS has a total field-of-view of 17.4 deg x 17.4 deg with a completeness sensitivity of m_V ~ 11 for a 10 second integration time. Since operations began in October 1996, LOTIS has responded to over 30 GCN/BATSE GRB triggers. Seven of these triggers are considered good events subject to the criteria of clear weather conditions, < 60 s response time, and > 50% coverage of the final BATSE 3sigma error circle. We report on the temporal behavior of the high-energy power law continuum component of gamma-ray burst spectra with data obtained by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment. We have selected 126 high fluence and high flux bursts from the beginning of the mission up until the present. Much of the data were obtained with the Large Area Detectors, which have nearly all-sky coverage, excellent sensitivity over two decades of energy and moderate energy resolution, ideal for continuum spectra studies of a large sample of bursts at high time resolution. At least 8 spectra from each burst were fitted with a spectral form that consisted of a low-energy power law, a spectral break at middle energies and a high-energy continuum. In most bursts (122), the high-energy continuum was consistent with a power law. The evolution of the fitted high-energy power-law index over the selected spectra for each burst is inconsistent with a constant for 34% of the total sample. The sample distribution of the average value for the index from each burst is fairly narrow, centered on -2.12. A linear trend in time is ruled out for only 20% of the bursts, with hard-to-soft evolution dominating the sample (100 events). The distribution for the total change in the power-law index over the duration of a burst peaks at the value -0.37, and is characterized by a median absolute deviation of 0.39, arguing that a single physical process is involved. We present analyses of the correlation of the power-law index with time, burst intensity and low-energy time evolution. LOTIS is a gamma-ray burst optical counterpart search experiment located near Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Since operations began in October 1996, LOTIS has responded to five triggers as of July 30, 1997, which occurred during good weather conditions. GRB970223 (BATSE Trigger #6100) was an exceptionally strong burst lasting $\sim30$ s with a peak at $\sim8$ s. LOTIS began imaging the error box $\sim 11$ s after the burst began, and achieved simultaneous optical coverage of 100% of the region enclosed by the BATSE $3\sigma$ error circle and the IPN annulus. No optical transients were observed brighter than the m$_V \sim 11$ completeness limit of the resulting images providing a new upper limit on the simultaneous optical to gamma-ray fluence ratio of $R_L < 1.1 \times 10^{-4}$ and on the simultaneous optical (at 700 nm) to gamma-ray (at 100 keV) flux density ratio of $R_F < 305$ for a B type spectrum and $R_F < 475$ for an M type spectrum., Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, requires aasms4.sty, 3 EPS figures; submitted to Astrophysical Journal Letters

The physical importance of the apparent discrepancy between the detections by pre-BATSE missions of absorption lines in gamma-ray burst spectra and the absence of a BATSE line detection necessitates a statistical analysis of this discrepancy. This analysis requires a calculation of the probability that a line, if present, will be detected in a given burst. However, the connection between the detectability of a line in a spectrum and in a burst requires a model for the occurrence of a line within a burst. We have developed the necessary weighting for the line detection probability for each spectrum spanning the burst. The resulting calculations require a description of each spectrum in the BATSE database. With these tools we identify the bursts in which lines are most likely to be detected. Also, by assuming a small frequency with which lines occur, we calculate the approximate number of BATSE bursts in which lines of various types could be detected. Lines similar to the Ginga detections can be detected in relatively few BATSE bursts; for example, in only ~20 bursts are lines similar to the GB 880205 pair of lines detectable. Ginga reported lines at ~20 and ~40 keV whereas the low energy cutoff of the BATSE spectra is typically above 20 keV; hence BATSE's sensitivity to lines is less than that of Ginga below 40 keV, and greater above. Therefore the probability that the GB 880205 lines would be detected in a Ginga burst rather than a BATSE burst is ~0.2. Relativistic shock models of gamma-ray bursts may be tested by comparison of their predicted low energy asymptotic spectral indices s to observations. Synchrotron radiation theory predicts that the instantaneous spectrum has s = - 1/3 and the spectrum integrated over the radiative decay of the electrons' energies has s = 1/2, with other cases lying between these limits. We examine the spectra of 11 bursts obtained by the Large Area Detectors on BATSE. One agrees with the predicted instantaneous spectrum, as does the initial portion of a second, and three are close to the predicted integrated spectrum. All the observed asymptotic spectral slopes lie in the predicted range. This evidence for relativistic shocks is independent of detailed models of bursts and of assumptions about their distances. Radiation observed with the predicted instantaneous spectrum has a comparatively smooth time dependence, consistent with the necessarily long radiation time, while that with the predicted integrated spectrum has a spiky time dependence, consistent with the necessarily short radiation time., Comment: 12 pp., latex, 16 figures

The Gamma-Ray Optical Counterpart Search Experiment (GROCSE) presents new experimental upper limits on the optical flux from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Our experiment consisted of a fully-automated very wide-field opto-electronic detection system that imaged locations of GRBs within a few seconds of receiving trigger signals provided by BATSE's real-time burst coordinate distribution network (BACODINE). The experiment acquired ~3800 observing hours, recording 22 gamma-ray burst triggers within $\sim$30 s of the start of the burst event. Some of these bursts were imaged while gamma-ray radiation was being detected by BATSE. We identified no optical counterparts associated with gamma-ray bursts amongst these events at the m$_V$ $\sim$ 7.0 to 8.5 sensitivity level. We find the ratio of the upper limit to the V-band optical flux, F$_\nu$, to the gamma-ray fluence, $\Phi_\gamma$, from these data to be $2 \times 10^{-18} < F_\nu/\Phi_\gamma < 2 \times 10^{-16}$., Comment: 28 pages, LaTeX, requires aasms4.sty and apjpt4.sty, 5 EPS figures; submitted to Astrophysical Journal

We report evidence that the asymptotic low-energy power law slope alpha (below the spectral break) of BATSE gamma-ray burst photon spectra evolves with time rather than remaining constant. We find a high degree of positive correlation exists between the time-resolved spectral break energy E_pk and alpha. In samples of 18 "hard-to-soft" and 12 "tracking" pulses, evolution of alpha was found to correlate with that of the spectral break energy E_pk at the 99.7% and 98% confidence levels respectively. We also find that in the flux rise phase of "hard-to-soft" pulses, the mean value of alpha is often positive and in some bursts the maximum value of alpha is consistent with a value > +1. BATSE burst 3B 910927, for example, has a alpha_max equal to 1.6 +/- 0.3. The cyclotron line in the spectrum of the accretion-powered pulsar Her X-1 offers an opportunity to assess the ability of the BATSE Spectroscopy Detectors (SDs) to detect lines like those seen in some GRBs. Preliminary analysis of an initial SD pulsar mode observation of Her X-1 indicated a cyclotron line at an energy of approximately 44 keV, rather than at the expected energy of approximately 36 keV. Our analysis of four SD pulsar mode observations of Her X-1 made during high-states of its 35 day cycle confirms this result. We consider a number of phenomenological models for the continuum spectrum and the cyclotron line. This ensures that we use the simplest models that adequately describe the data, and that our results are robust. We find modest evidence (significance Q ~ 10^-4-10^-2) for a line at approximately 44 keV in the data of the first observation. Joint fits to the four observations provide stronger evidence (Q ~ 10^-7-10^-4) for the line. We evaluate the significance of the line candidates identified by a visual search of burst spectra from BATSE's Spectroscopy Detectors. None of the candidates satisfy our detection criteria: an F-test probability less than 10^-4 for a feature in one detector and consistency among the detectors which viewed the burst. Most of the candidates are not very significant, and are likely to be fluctuations. Because of the expectation of finding absorption lines, the search was biased towards absorption features. We do not have a quantitative measure of the completeness of the search which would enable a comparison with previous missions. We evaluate the ability of the BATSE spectroscopy detectors to detect the absorption lines observed by Ginga in gamma ray burst spectra. We find that BATSE can detect the 20.6 keV line in the S1 segment of GB870303 with a detection probability of ~1/4 in nearly normally incident bursts, with the probability dropping off to nearly 0 at a burst angle of 50 degrees; the lines at 19.4 and 38.8 keV lines in GB880205 have a high detection probability in BATSE up to burst angles of 75 degrees. In addition, we calculate detection probabilities for these two line types as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and burst angle for use in detailed comparisons between BATSE and Ginga. We investigate spectral evolution in 37 bright, long gamma-ray bursts observed with the BATSE Spectroscopy Detectors. High resolution spectra are characterized by the energy of the peak of \nfn~and the evolution of this quantity is examined relative to the emission intensity. In most cases it is found that this peak energy either rises with or slightly precedes major intensity increases and softens for the remainder of the pulse. Inter-pulse emission is generally harder early in the burst. For bursts with multiple intensity pulses, later spikes tend to be softer than earlier ones indicating that the energy of the peak of \nfn~is bounded by an envelope which decays with time. Evidence is found that bursts in which the bulk of the flux comes well after the event which triggers the instrument tend to show less peak energy variability and are not as hard as several bursts in which the emission occurs promptly after the trigger. We describe a Bayesian methodology to evaluate the consistency between the reported Ginga and BATSE detections of absorption features in gamma ray burst spectra. Currently no features have been detected by BATSE, but this methodology will still be applicable if and when such features are discovered. The Bayesian methodology permits the comparison of hypotheses regarding the two detectors' observations, and makes explicit the subjective aspects of our analysis (e.g., the quantification of our confidence in detector performance). We also present non-Bayesian consistency statistics. The current scenario for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) involves internal shocks for the prompt GRB emission phase and external shocks for the afterglow phase. Assuming optically thin synchrotron emission from isotropically distributed energetic shocked electrons, GRB spectra observed with a low-energy power-law spectral index greater than -2/3 (for positive photon number indices E(exp alpha) indicate a problem with this model. For spectra that do not violate this condition, additional tests of the shock model can be made by comparing the low- and high-energy spectral indices, on the basis of the model's assertion that synchrotron emission from a single power-law distribution of electrons is responsible for both the low-energy and the high-energy power-law portions of the spectra. We find in most cases that the inferred relationship between the two spectral indices of observed GRB spectra is inconsistent with the constraints from the simple optically thin synchrotron shock emission model. In this sense, the prompt burst phase is different from the afterglow phase, and this difference may be related to anisotropic distributions of particles or to their continual acceleration in shocks during the prompt phase.

The current scenario for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) involves internal shocks for the prompt GRB emission phase and external shocks for the afterglow phase. Assuming synchrotron emission from energetic shocked electrons. GRB spectra observed with a low-energy power-law spectral index greater than -2/3 (for positive photon number indices E(sup alpha) indicate a problem with this model. The remaining spectra can test the synchrotron shock model prediction that the emission from a single distribution of electrons, cooling rapidly, is responsible for both the low-energy and high-energy power-low portions of the spectra. We find that the inferred relationship between the two spectral indices of observed GRB spectra is inconsistent with the constraints from the model, posing another problem for the synchrotron shock emission model. To overcome this problem, we describe a model where the average of -1, rather than the value of -3/2 predicted for cooling electrons. Situations where this might arise have been discussed in other contexts, and involve deceleration of the internal shocks during the GRB phase.

GRB 990123 was the first burst from which simultaneous optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray emission was detected; its afterglow has been followed by an extensive set of radio, optical, and X-ray observations. We have studied the gamma-ray burst itself as observed by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory detectors. We find that gamma-ray fluxes are not correlated with the simultaneous optical observations and that the gamma-ray spectra cannot be extrapolated simply to the optical fluxes. The burst is well fitted by the standard four-parameter GRB function, with the exception that excess emission compared with this function is observed below approx. 15 keV during some time intervals. The burst is characterized by the typical hard-to-soft and hardness-intensity correlation spectral evolution patterns. The energy of the peak of the vf (sub v), spectrum, E (sub p), reaches an unusually high value during the first intensity spike, 1470 plus or minus 110 keV, and then falls to approx. 300 keV during the tail of the burst. The high-energy spectrum above approx. 1 MeV is consistent with a power law with a photon index of about -3. By fluence, GRB 990123 is brighter than all but 0.4% of the GRBs observed with BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment), clearly placing it on the -3/2 power-law portion of the intensity distribution. However, the redshift measured for the afterglow is inconsistent with the Euclidean interpretation of the -3/2 power law. Using the redshift value of greater than or equal to 1.61 and assuming isotropic emission, the gamma-ray energy exceeds 10 (exp 54) ergs.

A comprehensive search of BATSE Spectroscopy Detector data from 117 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) has uncovered 13 statistically significant line candidates. The case of a candidate in GRB-930916 is discussed. In the data of SD-2 there appears to be a emission line at 46 keV, however the line is not seen in the data of SD-7. Simulations indicate that the lack of agreement between the results from SD-2 and SD-7 is implausible but not impossible.

It is shown in this study that two different types of spectral emission are generally produced in gamma-ray bursts. A subset of bursts is identified that exhibits a marked lack of fluence above 300 keV, and these bursts are shown to have luminosities about an order of magnitude lower than bursts with significant fluence above 300 keV. The bursts lacking emission above 300 keV exhibit an effectively homogeneous intensity distribution. In addition, it is shown that both types of emission are common in many bursts, demonstrating that a single source object is capable of generating both of them. These results strongly favor a gamma-ray burst source object that produces two different types of emission with varying degrees of superposition. The impact of this behavior is strong enough that it affects the properties of the burst intensity distribution, as well as the burst spectral characteristics.

LOTIS is a gamma-ray burst optical counterpart search experiment located near Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Since operations began in 1996 October, LOTIS has responded to five triggers as of 1997 July 30, which occurred during good weather conditions. GR-B 970223 (BATSE trigger 6100) was an exceptionally strong burst, lasting approx. 30 s with a peak at approx. 8 s. LOTIS began imaging the error box approx. 11 s after the burst began and achieved simultaneous optical coverage of 100% of the region enclosed by the BATSE 3 sigma error circle and the interplanetary network annulus. No optical transients were observed brighter than the m{}_{V} approx.11 completeness limit of the resulting images, providing a new upper limit on the ratio of simultaneous optical to gamma-ray fluence of R-{L) less than 1.1 x 10 logical and {-4} and on the ratio of simultaneous optical (at 700 mn) to gamma-ray (at 100 keV) flux density of R-{F} less than 305 for a B-type spectrum and R-{F} less than 475 for an M-type spectrum.

We analyze time-averaged spectra from 86 bright gamma-ray bursts from the first 5 years of the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory to determine whether the lowest energy data are consistent with a standard spectra form fit to the data at all energies. The BATSE Spectroscopy Detectors have the capability to observe photons as low as 5 keV. Using the gamma-ray burst locations obtained with the BATSE Large Area Detectors, the Spectroscopy Detectors' low-energy response can be modeled accurately. This, together with a postlaunch calibration of the lowest energy Spectroscopy Detector discriminator channel, which can lie in the range 5-20 keV, allows spectral deconvolution over a broad energy range, approx. 5 keV to 2 MeV. The additional coverage allows us to search for evidence of excess emission, or for a deficit, below 20 keV. While no burst has a significant (greater than or equal to 3 sigma) deficit relative to a standard spectra model, we find that 12 bursts have excess low-energy emission, ranging between 1.2 and 5.8 times the model flux, that exceeds 5 sigma in significance. This is evidence for an additional low-energy spectral component in at least some bursts, or for deviations from the power-law spectral form typically used to model gamma-ray bursts at energies below 100 keV.

More than 270 gamma ray bursts have been observed to date with the BATSE (Burst and Transient Source Experiment) aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Many have a duration of 10 seconds or more and complex structure with multiple peaks or spikes. Complex bursts in the energy range 30 keV to 1 MeV were systematically analyzed to determine the relations between intensity and spectral shape, or hardness. The burst hardness rises and falls in during spikes, but somewhat earlier than the intensity. A simple correlation between intensity and hardness is, therefore, not observed: the intensity lags instead. Results from one burst which shows evidence for longer lags in longer spikes are reported.

If a gamma-ray burst (GRB) occurs in a neutral medium, ionizing radiation associated with the burst will flash-photoionize a region surrounding the source. Detection of the line emission from this ionized region can constrain the flux of ionizing radiation accompanying the GRB and the density and ionization state of the environment surrounding the burst source. If the medium is sufficiently dense then the ionized region will recombine and fade on human timescales, aiding in the detection of the burst location and further constraining the density of the medium. However, dust within the dense medium may attenuate the line flux; the burst is unlikely to melt the dust along the line-of-sight. Astronomically interesting flux limits can be established by observations with reasonable integration times on a major telescope (e.g., 3 meter or larger).
