We present a pioneering model of the interaction between the solar wind and the surrounding interstellar medium that includes the possibility of different pressures in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. The outer heliosheath region is characterized by a low rate of turbulent scattering that would permit a development of pressure anisotropy. The effect is best seen on the interstellar side of the heliopause, where a narrow region is developed with an excessive perpendicular pressure resembling a plasma depletion layer typical of planetary magnetspheres. The magnitude of this effect is relatively small owing to the fact that proton-proton collisions don't permit the anisotropy to approach a stability threshold. We also show that if turbulence in the interstellar medium is weak, a much broader anisotropic boundary layer can exist, with a dominant perpendicular pressure in the southern hemisphere and a dominant parallel pressure in the north., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Two-fluid plasma flow equations describe the flow of ions and electrons with different densities, velocities, and pressures. We consider the ideal plasma flow i.e. we ignore viscous, resistive, and collision effects. The resulting system of equations has flux consisting of three independent components, one for ions, one for electrons, and a linear Maxwell's equation flux for the electromagnetic fields. The coupling of these components is via source terms. In this article, we present {conservative} second-order finite difference schemes that ensure the consistent evolution of the divergence constraints on the electric and magnetic fields. The key idea is to design a numerical solver for Maxwell's equations using the multidimensional Riemann solver at the vertices, ensuring discrete divergence constraints; for the fluid parts, we use an entropy-stable discretization. The proposed schemes are co-located, second-order accurate, entropy stable, and ensure divergence-free evolution of the magnetic field. We use explicit and IMplicit-EXplicit (IMEX) schemes for time discretizations. To demonstrate the accuracy, stability, and divergence constraint-preserving ability of the proposed schemes, we present several test cases in one and two dimensions. We also compare the numerical results with those obtained from schemes with no divergence cleaning and those employing perfectly hyperbolic Maxwell (PHM) equations-based divergence cleaning methods for Maxwell's equations., Comment: Accepted in Journal of Scientific Computing

In this article, we consider the Chew, Goldberger \& Low (CGL) plasma flow equations, which is a set of nonlinear, non-conservative hyperbolic PDEs modelling anisotropic plasma flows. These equations incorporate the double adiabatic approximation for the evolution of the pressure, making them very valuable for plasma physics, space physics and astrophysical applications. We first present the entropy analysis for the weak solutions. We then propose entropy-stable finite-difference schemes for the CGL equations. The key idea is to rewrite the CGL equations such that the non-conservative terms do not contribute to the entropy equations. The conservative part of the rewritten equations is very similar to the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. We then symmetrize the conservative part by following Godunov's symmetrization process for MHD. The resulting equations are then discretized by designing entropy conservative numerical flux and entropy diffusion operator based on the entropy scaled eigenvectors of the conservative part. We then prove the semi-discrete entropy stability of the schemes for CGL equations. The schemes are then tested using several test problems derived from the corresponding MHD test cases.

We present a new numerical model for solving the Chew-Goldberger-Low system of equations describing a bi-Maxwellian plasma in a magnetic field. Heliospheric and geospace environments are often observed to be in an anisotropic state with distinctly different parallel and perpendicular pressure components. The CGL system represents the simplest leading order correction to the common isotropic MHD model that still allows to incorporate the latter's most desirable features. However, the CGL system presents several numerical challenges: the system is not in conservation form, the source terms are stiff, and unlike MHD it is prone to a loss of hyperbolicity if the parallel and perpendicular pressures become too different. The usual cure is to bring the parallel and perpendicular pressures closer to one another; but that has usually been done in an ad hoc manner. We present a physics-informed method of pressure relaxation based on the idea of pitch-angle scattering that keeps the numerical system hyperbolic and naturally leads to zero anisotropy in the limit of very large plasma beta. Numerical codes based on the CGL equations can, therefore, be made to function robustly for any magnetic field strength, including the limit where the magnetic field approaches zero. The capabilities of our new algorithm are demonstrated using several stringent test problems that provide a comparison of the CGL equations in the weakly and strongly collisional limits. Higher order finite difference Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) schemes for conservation laws represent a technology that has been reasonably consolidated. They are extremely popular because, when applied to multidimensional problems, they offer high order accuracy at a fraction of the cost of finite volume WENO or DG schemes. They come in two flavors. There is the classical finite difference WENO (FD-WENO) method (Shu and Osher, J. Comput. Phys., 83 (1989) 32-78). However, in recent years there is also an alternative finite difference WENO (AFD-WENO) method which has recently been formalized into a very useful general-purpose algorithm for conservation laws (Balsara et al., Efficient Alternative Finite Difference WENO Schemes for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws, submitted to CAMC (2023)). However, the FD-WENO algorithm has only very recently been formulated for hyperbolic systems with non-conservative products (Balsara et al., Efficient Finite Difference WENO Scheme for Hyperbolic Systems with Non-Conservative Products, to appear CAMC (2023)). In this paper we show that there are substantial advantages in obtaining an AFD-WENO algorithm for hyperbolic systems with non-conservative products. Such an algorithm is documented in this paper. We present an AFD-WENO formulation in fluctuation form that is carefully engineered to retrieve the flux form when that is warranted and nevertheless extends to non-conservative products. The method is flexible because it allows any Riemann solver to be used. The formulation we arrive at is such that when non-conservative products are absent it reverts exactly to the formulation in the second citation above which is in exact flux conservation form. Higher order finite difference Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) schemes for conservation laws are extremely popular because, for multidimensional problems, they offer high order accuracy at a fraction of the cost of finite volume WENO or DG schemes. Such schemes come in two formulations. The very popular classical finite difference WENO (FD-WENO) method (Shu and Osher, J. Comput. Phys., 83 (1989) 32-78) relies two reconstruction steps applied to two split fluxes. However, the method cannot accommodate different types of Riemann solvers and cannot preserve free stream boundary conditions on curvilinear meshes. This limits its utility. The alternative finite difference WENO (AFD-WENO) method can overcome these deficiencies, however, much less work has been done on this method. The reasons are three-fold. First, it is difficult for the casual reader to understand the intricate logic that requires higher order derivatives of the fluxes to be evaluated at zone boundaries. The analytical methods for deriving the update equation for AFD-WENO schemes are somewhat recondite. To overcome that difficulty, we provide an easily accessible script that is based on a computer algebra system in Appendix A of this paper. Second, the method relies on interpolation rather than reconstruction, and WENO interpolation formulae have not been documented in the literature as thoroughly as WENO reconstruction formulae. In this paper, we explicitly provide all necessary WENO interpolation formulae that are needed for implementing AFD-WENO up to ninth order. The third reason is that AFD-WENO requires higher order derivatives of the fluxes to be available at zone boundaries. In this paper we present the first set of 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations performed with the riemann geomesh code. We study the dynamics of the magnetically channeled winds of magnetic massive stars in full three dimensions using a code that is uniquely suited to spherical problems. Specifically, we perform isothermal simulations of a smooth wind on a rotating star with a tilted, initially dipolar field. We compare the mass-loss, angular momentum loss, and magnetospheric dynamics of a template star (with the properties that are reminiscent of the O4 supergiant {\zeta} Pup) over a range of rotation rates, magnetic field strengths, and magnetic tilt angles. The simulations are run up to a quasi-steady state and the results are observed to be consistent with the existing literature, showing the episodic centrifugal breakout events of the mass outflow, confined by the magnetic field loops that form the closed magnetosphere of the star. The catalogued results provide perspective on how angular-momentum loss varies for different configurations of rotation rate, magnetic field strength, and large magnetic tilt angles. In agreement with previous 2D MHD studies, we find that high magnetic confinement reduces the overall mass-loss rate, and higher rotation increases the mass-loss rate. This and future studies will be used to estimate the angular-momentum evolution, spin-down time, and mass-loss evolution of magnetic massive stars as a function of magnetic field strength, rotation rate, and dipole tilt.

Higher order finite difference Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) schemes have been constructed for conservation laws. For multidimensional problems, they offer high order accuracy at a fraction of the cost of a finite volume WENO or DG scheme of comparable accuracy. This makes them quite attractive for several science and engineering applications. But, to the best of our knowledge, such schemes have not been extended to non-linear hyperbolic systems with non-conservative products. In this paper, we perform such an extension which improves the domain of applicability of such schemes. The extension is carried out by writing the scheme in fluctuation form. We use the HLLI Riemann solver of Dumbser and Balsara (2016) as a building block for carrying out this extension. Because of the use of an HLL building block, the resulting scheme has a proper supersonic limit. The use of anti-diffusive fluxes ensures that stationary discontinuities can be preserved by the scheme, thus expanding its domain of applicability. Our new finite difference WENO formulation uses the same WENO reconstruction that was used in classical versions, making it very easy for users to transition over to the present formulation. For conservation laws, the new finite difference WENO is shown to perform as well as the classical version of finite difference WENO, with two major advantages:- 1) It can capture jumps in stationary linearly degenerate wave families exactly. 2) It only requires the reconstruction to be applied once. Several examples from hyperbolic PDE systems with non-conservative products are shown which indicate that the scheme works and achieves its design order of accuracy for smooth multidimensional flows. GPU computing is expected to play an integral part in all modern Exascale supercomputers. It is also expected that higher order Godunov schemes will make up about a significant fraction of the application mix on such supercomputers. It is, therefore, very important to prepare the community of users of higher order schemes for hyperbolic PDEs for this emerging opportunity. We focus on three broad and high-impact areas where higher order Godunov schemes are used. The first area is computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The second is computational magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) which has an involution constraint that has to be mimetically preserved. The third is computational electrodynamics (CED) which has involution constraints and also extremely stiff source terms. Together, these three diverse uses of higher order Godunov methodology, cover many of the most important applications areas. In all three cases, we show that the optimal use of algorithms, techniques and tricks, along with the use of OpenACC, yields superlative speedups on GPUs! As a bonus, we find a most remarkable and desirable result: some higher order schemes, with their larger operations count per zone, show better speedup than lower order schemes on GPUs. In other words, the GPU is an optimal stratagem for overcoming the higher computational complexities of higher order schemes! Several avenues for future improvement have also been identified. A scalability study is presented for a real-world application using GPUs and comparable numbers of high-end multicore CPUs. It is found that GPUs offer a substantial performance benefit over comparable number of CPUs, especially when all the methods designed in this paper are used., Comment: 49 pages

Approximate multidimensional Riemann solvers are essential building blocks in designing globally constraint-preserving finite volume time domain (FVTD) and discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) schemes for computational electrodynamics (CED). In those schemes, we can achieve high-order temporal accuracy with the help of Runge-Kutta or ADER time-stepping. This paper presents the design of a multidimensional approximate Generalized Riemann Problem (GRP) solver for the first time. The multidimensional Riemann solver accepts as its inputs the four states surrounding an edge on a structured mesh, and its output consists of a resolved state and its associated fluxes. In contrast, the multidimensional GRP solver accepts as its inputs the four states and their gradients in all directions; its output consists of the resolved state and its corresponding fluxes and the gradients of the resolved state. The gradients can then be used to extend the solution in time. As a result, we achieve second-order temporal accuracy in a single step. In this work, the formulation is optimized for linear hyperbolic systems with stiff, linear source terms because such a formulation will find maximal use in CED. Our formulation produces an overall constraint-preserving time-stepping strategy based on the GRP that is provably L-stable in the presence of stiff source terms. We present several stringent test problems, showing that the multidimensional GRP solver for CED meets its design accuracy and performs stably with optimal time steps. This paper examines a class of PDEs where some part of the PDE system evolves a vector field whose curl remains zero or grows in proportion to specified source terms. Such PDEs are referred to as curl-free or curl-preserving respectively. In this paper we catalogue a class of DG-like schemes for such PDEs. To retain the globally curl-free or curl-preserving constraints, the components of the vector field, as well as their higher moments, have to be collocated at the edges of the mesh. They are updated by using potentials that are collocated at the vertices of the mesh. The resulting schemes : 1) do not blow up even after very long integration times, 2) do not need any special cleaning treatment, 3) can operate with large explicit timesteps, 4) do not require the solution of an elliptic system and 5) can be extended to higher orders using DG-like methods. The methods rely on a special curl-preserving reconstruction and they also rely on multidimensional upwinding. The Galerkin projection, so crucial to the design of a DG method, is now carried out in the edges of the mesh and yields a weak form update that uses potentials that are obtained at the vertices of the mesh with the help of a multidimensional Riemann solver. A von Neumann stability analysis of the curl-preserving methods is carried out and the limiting CFL numbers of this entire family of methods is catalogued in this work. The stability analysis confirms that with increasing order of accuracy, our novel curl-free methods have superlative phase accuracy while substantially reducing dissipation. We also show that PNPM-like methods retain much of the excellent wave propagation characteristics of the DG-like methods while offering a much larger CFL number and lower computational complexity.

Several important PDE systems, like magnetohydrodynamics and computational electrodynamics, are known to support involutions where the divergence of a vector field evolves in divergence-free or divergence constraint-preserving fashion. Recently, new classes of PDE systems have emerged for hyperelasticity, compressible multiphase flows, so-called first order reductions of the Einstein field equations, or a novel first order hyperbolic reformulation of Schr\"odinger's equation, to name a few, where the involution in the PDE supports curl-free or curl constraint-preserving evolution of a vector field. Since mimetic numerical schemes for the solution of the former class of PDEs are well-developed, we draw guidance from them for the solution of the latter class of PDEs. We show that a study of the curl constraint-preserving reconstruction gives us a great deal of insight into the design of consistent, mimetic schemes for these involutionary PDEs. The importance of multidimensional Riemann solvers in facilitating the design of such schemes is also documented. We study the problem of curl constraint-preserving reconstruction as it pertains to the design of mimetic discontinuous Galerkin (DG) and finite volume (FV) schemes for PDEs that support such an involution. This is done for two and three dimensional structured mesh problems where we deliver closed form expressions for the reconstruction. The role that this reconstruction plays in the curl-free, or curl-preserving prolongation of vector fields in adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is also discussed. In two dimensions, a von Neumann analysis of structure-preserving DG-like schemes that mimetically satisfy the curl constraints, is also presented. Numerical results are also presented to show that the schemes meet their design accuracy.

Magnetic fields advected along with low angular momentum accretion flows predominantly become toroidal due to the strong azimuthal velocity close to a black hole. We study self-consistently the movements of these flux tubes inside an advective disc and how they dynamically influence the flow. We find that the centrifugal barrier slows down the radial motion of the flux tubes. In this case, the large magnetic flux tubes with a significant drag force escape along the vertical axis due to buoyancy. Magnetic pressure rises close to the black hole and together with the centrifugal force, it combats gravity. The tug-of-war among these forces causes the centrifugal pressure supported shock to oscillate radially. We study the effects of successive injection of flux tubes and find how the flux tube could be trapped inside the disc in regions of highest entropy. Most interestingly, the shock wave remains at its average location and is not destroyed. We show that the toroidal field loops contribute significantly to collimate and accelerate the outflows from the centrifugal barrier and suggest this mechanism to be a way to collimate and accelerate jets., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures, accepted in ApJ

The Cauchy-Kowalewskaya (CK) procedure is a key building block in the design of solvers for the Generalised Rieman Problem (GRP) based on Taylor series expansions in time. The CK procedure allows us to express time derivatives in terms of purely space derivatives. This is a very cumbersome procedure, which often requires the use of software manipulators. In this paper, a simplification of the CK procedure is proposed in the context of implicit Taylor series expansion for GRP, for hyperbolic balance laws in the framework of [Journal of Computational Physics 303 (2015) 146-172]. A recursive formula for the CK procedure, which is straightforwardly implemented in computational codes, is obtained. The proposed GRP solver is used in the context of the ADER approach and several one-dimensional problems are solved to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the present scheme. There is a great need in several areas of astrophysics and space-physics to carry out high order of accuracy, divergence-free MHD simulations on spherical meshes. This requires us to pay careful attention to the interplay between mesh quality and numerical algorithms. Methods have been designed that fundamentally integrate high order isoparametric mappings with the other high accuracy algorithms that are needed for divergence-free MHD simulations on geodesic meshes. The goal of this paper is to document such algorithms that are implemented in the geodesic mesh version of the RIEMANN code. The fluid variables are reconstructed using a special kind of WENO-AO algorithm that integrates the mesh geometry into the reconstruction process from the ground-up. A novel divergence-free reconstruction strategy for the magnetic field that performs efficiently at all orders, even on isoparametrically mapped meshes, is then presented. The MHD equations are evolved in space and time using a novel ADER predictor algorithm that is efficiently adapted to the isoparametrically mapped geometry. The application of one-dimensional and multidimensional Riemann solvers at suitable locations on the mesh then provides the corrector step. The corrector step for the magnetic field uses a Yee-type staggering of magnetic fields. This results in a scheme with divergence-free update for the magnetic field. The use of ADER enables a one-step update which only requires one messaging operation per complete timestep. This is very beneficial for parallel processing. The small-scale turbulent dynamo is an important process contributing to the cosmic magnetization. In partially ionized astrophysical plasmas, the dynamo growth of magnetic energy strongly depends on the coupling state between ions and neutrals and the ion-neutral collisional damping effect. A new damping stage of turbulent dynamo in a weakly ionized medium was theoretically predicted by Xu \& Lazarian (2016). By carrying out a 3D two-fluid dynamo simulation, here we for the first time numerically confirmed the physical conditions and the linear-in-time growth of magnetic field strength of the damping stage of dynamo. The dynamo-amplified magnetic field has a characteristic length as the damping scale, which increases with time and can reach the injection scale of turbulence after around eight largest eddy-turnover times given sufficiently low ionization fraction and weak initial magnetic field. Due to the weak coupling between ions and neutrals, most turbulent energy carried by neutrals cannot be converted to the magnetic energy, resulting in a relatively weak magnetic field at the end of dynamo. This result has important implications for the growth of magnetic fields in the partially ionized interstellar medium and shock acceleration of Galactic cosmic rays., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; 11 pages, 5 figures

We study time evolution of sub-Keplerian transonic accretion flows onto black holes using a general relativistic numerical simulation code. We perform simulations around the black holes having non-zero rotation. We first compare one-dimensional simulation results with theoretical results and validate the performance of our code. Next, we present results of axisymmetric, two-dimensional simulation of advective flows. In the literature, there is no solution which describes steady shock solutions in two dimensions. However, our simulations produce these centrifugal force supported steady shock waves even in presence of strong dragging of inertial frames. Since the post-shock region could be hot and upscatter photons through Comptonization, these shock would put imprints on the spectra. Thus, our solutions, which represent truly new results, could be useful to measure spins through radiation spectrum of accreting Kerr black holes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Computational electrodynamics (CED), the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations, plays an incredibly important role in several problems in science and engineering. High accuracy solutions are desired, and the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is one of the better ways of delivering high accuracy in CED. Maxwell's equations have a pair of involution constraints for which mimetic schemes that globally satisfy the constraints at a discrete level are highly desirable. Balsara and Kappeli presented a von Neumann stability analysis of globally constraint-preserving DG schemes for CED up to 4'th order which was focused on developing the theory and documenting the superior dissipation and dispersion of DGTD schemes in media with constant permittivity and permeability. In this paper we present DGTD schemes for CED that go up to 5'th order of accuracy and analyze their performance when permittivity and permeability vary strongly in space. Our DGTD schemes achieve constraint preservation by collocating the electric displacement and magnetic induction as well as their higher order modes in the faces of the mesh. Our first finding is that at 4'th and higher orders, one has to evolve some zone-centered modes in addition to the face-centered modes. It is well-known that the limiting step in DG schemes causes a reduction of the optimal accuracy of the scheme. In this paper we document simulations where permittivity and permeability vary by almost an order of magnitude without requiring any limiting of the DG scheme. This very favorable finding ensures that DGTD schemes retain optimal accuracy even in the presence of large spatial variations in permittivity/permeability. Our third finding shows that the electromagnetic energy is conserved very well even when permittivity and permeability vary strongly in space; as long as the conductivity is zero.

The time-dependent equations of computational electrodynamics (CED) are evolved consistent with the divergence constraints. As a result, there has been a recent effort to design finite volume time domain (FVTD) and discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) schemes that satisfy the same constraints and, nevertheless, draw on recent advances in higher order Godunov methods. This paper catalogues the first step in the design of globally constraint-preserving DGTD schemes. The algorithms presented here are based on a novel DG-like method that is applied to a Yee-type staggering of the electromagnetic field variables in the faces of the mesh. The other two novel building blocks of the method include constraint-preserving reconstruction of the electromagnetic fields and multidimensional Riemann solvers; both of which have been developed in recent years by the first author. We carry out a von Neumann stability analysis of the entire suite of DGTD schemes for CED at orders of accuracy ranging from second to fourth. A von Neumann stability analysis gives us the maximal CFL numbers that can be sustained by the DGTD schemes presented here at all orders. It also enables us to understand the wave propagation characteristics of the schemes in various directions on a Cartesian mesh. We find that the CFL of DGTD schemes decreases with increasing order. To counteract that, we also present constraint-preserving PNPM schemes for CED. We find that the third and fourth order constraint-preserving DGTD and P1PM schemes have some extremely attractive properties when it comes to low-dispersion, low-dissipation propagation of electromagnetic waves in multidimensions. Numerical accuracy tests are also provided to support the von Neumann stability analysis.

In this paper we present a novel pressure-based semi-implicit finite volume solver for the equations of compressible ideal, viscous and resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The new method is conservative for mass, momentum and total energy and in multiple space dimensions it is constructed in such a way as to respect the divergence-free condition of the magnetic field exactly, also in the presence of resistive effects. This is possible via the use of multi-dimensional Riemann solvers on an appropriately staggered grid for the time evolution of the magnetic field and a double curl formulation of the resistive terms. The new semi-implicit method for the MHD equations proposed here discretizes all terms related to the pressure in the momentum equation and the total energy equation implicitly, making again use of a properly staggered grid for pressure and velocity. The time step of the scheme is restricted by a CFL condition based only on the fluid velocity and the Alfv\'en wave speed and is not based on the speed of the magnetosonic waves. Our new method is particularly well-suited for low Mach number flows and for the incompressible limit of the MHD equations, for which it is well-known that explicit density-based Godunov-type finite volume solvers become increasingly inefficient and inaccurate due to the increasingly stringent CFL condition and the wrong scaling of the numerical viscosity in the incompressible limit. We show a relevant MHD test problem in the low Mach number regime where the new semi-implicit algorithm is a factor of 50 faster than a traditional explicit finite volume method, which is a very significant gain in terms of computational efficiency. However, our numerical results confirm that our new method performs well also for classical MHD test cases with strong shocks. The Riemann problem, and the associated generalized Riemann problem, are increasingly seen as the important building blocks for modern higher order Godunov-type schemes. In the past, building a generalized Riemann problem solver was seen as an intricately mathematical task for complicated physical or engineering problems because the associated Riemann problem is different for each hyperbolic system of interest. This paper changes that situation. The HLLI Riemann solver is a recently-proposed Riemann solver that is universal in that it is applicable to any hyperbolic system, whether in conservation form or with non-conservative products. The HLLI Riemann solver is also complete in the sense that if it is given a complete set of eigenvectors, it represents all waves with minimal dissipation. It is, therefore, very attractive to build a generalized Riemann problem solver version of the HLLI Riemann solver. This is the task that is accomplished in the present paper. We show that at second order, the generalized Riemann problem version of the HLLI Riemann solver is easy to design. Our GRP solver is also complete and universal because it inherits those good properties from original HLLI Riemann solver. We also show how our GRP solver can be adapted to the solution of hyperbolic systems with stiff source terms. Our generalized HLLI Riemann solver is easy to implement and performs robustly and well over a range of test problems. All implementation-related details are presented. Results from several stringent test problems are shown. These test problems are drawn from many different hyperbolic systems, and include hyperbolic systems in conservation form; with non-conservative products; and with stiff source terms. The present generalized Riemann problem solver performs well on all of them.

We study time evolution of sub-Keplerian transonic accretion flows onto black holes using a general relativistic numerical simulation code. We perform simulations in Schwarzschild spacetime. We first compare one-dimensional simulation results with theoretical results and validate the performance of our code. Next, we present results of axisymmetric, two-dimensional simulation of advective flows. As computational astrophysics comes under pressure to become a precision science, there is an increasing need to move to high accuracy schemes for computational astrophysics. Hence the need for a specialized review on higher order schemes for computational astrophysics. The focus here is on weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes, discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes and PNPM schemes. WENO schemes are higher order extensions of traditional second order finite volume schemes which are already familiar to most computational astrophysicists. DG schemes, on the other hand, evolve all the moments of the solution, with the result that they are more accurate than WENO schemes. PNPM schemes occupy a compromise position between WENO and PNPM schemes. They evolve an Nth order spatial polynomial, while reconstructing higher order terms up to Mth order. As a result, the timestep can be larger. Time-dependent astrophysical codes need to be accurate in space and time. This is realized with the help of SSP-RK (strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta) schemes and ADER (Arbitrary DERivative in space and time) schemes. The most popular approaches to SSP-RK and ADER schemes are also described. The style of this review is to assume that readers have a basic understanding of hyperbolic systems and one-dimensional Riemann solvers. Such an understanding can be acquired from a sequence of prepackaged lectures available from http://www.nd.edu/~dbalsara/Numerical-PDE-Course. We then build on this understanding to give the reader a practical introduction to the schemes described here. The emphasis is on computer-implementable ideas, not necessarily on the underlying theory, because it was felt that this would be most interesting to most computational astrophysicists.

In our prior papers, we considered the non-relativistic linear stability analysis of magnetized jets that do not have current sheet at the boundary. In this paper, we extend our analysis to relativistic jets. In order to find the unstable modes of current sheet-free, magnetized relativistic jets, we linearize full relativistic magnetohydrodynamics equations and solve them numerically. We find the dispersion relation of the pinch and kink mode instabilities. By comparing the dispersion relations of mildly relativistic jet (Lorentz factor 2) with moderately relativistic jet (Lorentz factor 10), we find that the jet with higher Lorentz factor is significantly more stable in both pinch and kink modes. We show that inclusion of the current sheet-free magnetic field in the jet further enhances the stability. Both pinch and kink mode instabilities become progressively more stable with increasing magnetization. We also show a scaling relation between the maximum temporal growth rate of the unstable mode and the Lorentz factor of the jet. The maximum temporal growth rates of the unstable modes are inversely proportion to the Lorentz factors for most of the modes that we study. However, for the fundamental pinch mode it is inversely proportional to the square of the Lorentz factor. In various astrophysics settings it is common to have a two-fluid relativistic plasma that interacts with the electromagnetic field. While it is common to ignore the displacement current in the ideal, classical magnetohydrodynamic limit, when the flows become relativistic this approximation is less than absolutely well-justified. In such a situation, it is more natural to consider a positively charged fluid made up of positrons or protons interacting with a negatively charged fluid made up of electrons. The two fluids interact collectively with the full set of Maxwell's equations. As a result, a solution strategy for that coupled system of equations is sought and found here. Our strategy extends to higher orders, providing increasing accuracy. Three important innovations are reported here. In our first innovation, the magnetic field within each zone is reconstructed in a divergence-free fashion while the electric field within each zone is reconstructed in a form that is consistent with Gauss' law. In our second innovation, a multidimensionally upwinded strategy is presented which ensures that the magnetic field can be updated via a discrete interpretation of Faraday's law and the electric field can be updated via a discrete interpretation of the generalized Ampere's law. Our third innovation consists of an efficient design for several popular IMEX schemes so that they provide strong coupling between the finite-volume-based fluid solver and the electromagnetic fields at high order. Several accuracy analyses are presented showing that our method meets its design accuracy in the MHD limit as well as in the limit of electromagnetic wave propagation. Several stringent test problems are also presented. In a prior paper (Kim et al. 2015) we considered the linear stability of magnetized jets that carry no net electric current and do not have current sheets. In this paper, in addition to physically well-motivated magnetic field structures, we also include the effects of jet shear. The jets we study have finite thermal pressure in addition to having realistic magnetic field structures and velocity shear. We find that shear has a strongly stabilizing effect on various modes of jet instability. Increasing shear stabilizes the fundamental pinch modes at long wavelengths and short wavelengths. Increasing shear also stabilizes the first reflection pinch modes at short wavelengths. Increasing shear has only a very modest stabilizing effect on the fundamental kink modes at long wavelengths; however, increasing shear does have a strong stabilizing effect on the fundamental kink modes at short wavelengths. The first reflection kink modes are strongly stabilized by increasing shear at shorter wavelengths. Overall, we find that the combined effect of magnetic field and shear stabilizes jets more than shear alone. In addition to the results from a formal linear stability analysis, we present a novel way of visualizing and understanding jet stability. This gives us a deeper understanding of the enhanced stability of sheared, magnetized jets. The relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) set of equations has recently seen increased use in astrophysical computations. Even so, RMHD codes remain fragile. The reconstruction can sometimes yield superluminal velocities in certain parts of the mesh. In this paper we present a reconstruction strategy that overcomes this problem by making a single conservative to primitive transformation per cell followed by higher order WENO reconstruction on a carefully chosen set of primitives that guarantee subluminal reconstruction of the flow variables. For temporal evolution via a predictor step we also present second, third and fourth order accurate ADER methods that keep the velocity subluminal during the predictor step. The RMHD system also requires the magnetic field to be evolved in a divergence-free fashion. In the treatment of classical numerical MHD the analogous issue has seen much recent progress with the advent of multidimensional Riemann solvers. By developing multidimensional Riemann solvers for RMHD, we show that similar advances extend to RMHD. As a result, the face-centered magnetic fields can be evolved much more accurately using the edge-centered electric fields in the corrector step. Those edge-centered electric fields come from a multidimensional Riemann solver for RMHD which we present in this paper. In this paper we also develop several new test problems for RMHD. We show that RMHD vortices can be designed that propagate on the computational mesh as self-preserving structures. These RMHD vortex test problems provide a means to do truly multidimensional accuracy testing for RMHD codes. Several other stringent test problems are presented. We show the importance of resolution in certain test problems. In this paper we consider stability of magnetized jets that carry no net electric current and do not have current sheets (Gourgouliatos et al. 2012). The non-relativistic MHD equations are linearized around the background velocity and the magnetic field structure of the jet. The resulting linear equations are solved numerically inside the jet. We find that introduction of current-sheet-free magnetic field significantly improves jet stability relative to unmagnetized jets or magnetized jets with current sheets at their surface. This particularly applies to the fundamental pinch and kink modes - they become completely suppressed in a wide range of long wavelengths that are known to become most pernicious to jet stability when the evolution enters the non-linear regime. In this paper we use the genuinely multidimensional HLL Riemann solvers recently developed by Balsara et al. to construct a new class of computationally efficient high order Lagrangian ADER-WENO one-step ALE finite volume schemes on unstructured triangular meshes. A nonlinear WENO reconstruction operator allows the algorithm to achieve high order of accuracy in space, while high order of accuracy in time is obtained by the use of an ADER time-stepping technique based on a local space-time Galerkin predictor. The multidimensional HLL and HLLC Riemann solvers operate at each vertex of the grid, considering the entire Voronoi neighborhood of each node and allows for larger time steps than conventional one-dimensional Riemann solvers. The results produced by the multidimensional Riemann solver are then used twice in our one-step ALE algorithm: first, as a node solver that assigns a unique velocity vector to each vertex, in order to preserve the continuity of the computational mesh; second, as a building block for genuinely multidimensional numerical flux evaluation that allows the scheme to run with larger time steps compared to conventional finite volume schemes that use classical one-dimensional Riemann solvers in normal direction. A rezoning step may be necessary in order to overcome element overlapping or crossing-over. We apply the method presented in this article to two systems of hyperbolic conservation laws, namely the Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics and the equations of ideal classical magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD). Convergence studies up to fourth order of accuracy in space and time have been carried out. Several numerical test problems have been solved to validate the new approach.

We present high resolution simulations of two-fluid (ion-neutral) MHD turbulence with resolutions as large as 512^3. The simulations are supersonic and mildly sub-Alfvenic, in keeping with the conditions present in molecular clouds. Such turbulence is thought to influence star formation processes in molecular clouds because typical cores form on length scales that are comparable to the dissipation scales of this turbulence in the ions. The simulations are motivated by the fact that recent studies of isophotologue lines in molecular clouds have found significant differences in the linewidth-size relationship for neutral and ion species. The goals of this paper are to explain those observations using simulations and analytic theory, present a new set of density-based diagnostics by drawing on similar diagnostics that have been obtained by studying single-fluid turbulence, and show that our two-fluid simulations play a vital role in reconciling alternative models of star formation. The velocity-dependent diagnostics display a complementarity with the density-dependent diagnostics. We find that the linewidth-size relationships show a prominent difference between ions and neutrals when the line of sight is orthogonal to the mean field. This is because the MHD waves in the ions differ from hydrodynamic waves in the neutrals. We also find that the density probability distribution functions (PDFs) show prominent differences between the ions and neutrals when the line of sight is parallel to the mean field. This is because the velocity fluctuations in the ions tend to produce column density fluctuations along field lines. When the magnetic field makes an angle to the line of sight, both observable differences should be visible. These diagnostics should be easy for observers to test. We present the first high order one-step ADER-WENO finite volume scheme with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) in multiple space dimensions. High order spatial accuracy is obtained through a WENO reconstruction, while a high order one-step time discretization is achieved using a local space-time discontinuous Galerkin predictor method. Due to the one-step nature of the underlying scheme, the resulting algorithm is particularly well suited for an AMR strategy on space-time adaptive meshes, i.e.with time-accurate local time stepping. The AMR property has been implemented 'cell-by-cell', with a standard tree-type algorithm, while the scheme has been parallelized via the Message Passing Interface (MPI) paradigm. The new scheme has been tested over a wide range of examples for nonlinear systems of hyperbolic conservation laws, including the classical Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). High order in space and time have been confirmed via a numerical convergence study and a detailed analysis of the computational speed-up with respect to highly refined uniform meshes is also presented. We also show test problems where the presented high order AMR scheme behaves clearly better than traditional second order AMR methods. The proposed scheme that combines for the first time high order ADER methods with space--time adaptive grids in two and three space dimensions is likely to become a useful tool in several fields of computational physics, applied mathematics and mechanics., Comment: With updated bibliography information

In this paper we present a genuinely two-dimensional HLLC Riemann solver. On logically rectangular meshes, it accepts four input states that come together at an edge and outputs the multi-dimensionally upwinded fluxes in both directions. This work builds on, and improves, our prior work on two-dimensional HLL Riemann solvers. The HLL Riemann solver presented here achieves its stabilization by introducing a constant state in the region of strong interaction, where four one-dimensional Riemann problems interact vigorously with one another. A robust version of the HLL Riemann solver is presented here along with a strategy for introducing sub-structure in the strongly-interacting state. Introducing sub-structure turns the two-dimensional HLL Riemann solver into a two-dimensional HLLC Riemann solver. The sub-structure that we introduce represents a contact discontinuity which can be oriented in any direction relative to the mesh. The Riemann solver presented here is general and can work with any system of conservation laws. We also present a second order accurate Godunov scheme that works in three dimensions and is entirely based on the present multidimensional HLLC Riemann solver technology. The methods presented are cost-competitive with traditional higher order Godunov schemes.

ADER (Arbitrary DERivative in space and time) methods for the time-evolution of hyperbolic conservation laws have recently generated a fair bit of interest. The ADER time update can be carried out in a single step, which is desirable in many applications. However, prior papers have focused on the theory while downplaying implementation details. The purpose of the present paper is to make ADER schemes accessible by providing two useful formulations of the method as well as their implementation details on three-dimensional structured meshes. We therefore provide a detailed formulation of ADER schemes for conservation laws with non-stiff source terms in nodal as well as modal space along with useful implementation-related detail. We also provide details for the efficient use of ADER schemes in obtaining the numerical flux for conservation laws as well as electric fields for divergence-free magnetohydrodynamics. An efficient WENO-based strategy for obtaining zone-averaged magnetic fields from face-centered magnetic fields in MHD is also presented. The schemes catalogued here have been implemented in the first author's RIEMANN code. The speed of ADER schemes is shown to be almost twice as fast as that of strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta time stepping schemes for all the orders of accuracy that we tested., Comment: more complete references and figures

We have studied saturated, MRI-driven turbulence using three-dimensional, isothermal simulations with resolutions that extend from 64 to 192 zones in each direction. The simulations were performed with several higher order Godunov algorithms. A variety of reconstruction strategies as well as a variety of Riemann solvers are tried. We show that the details of the isothermal MRI-driven turbulence depend principally on the Riemann solver and secondarily on the reconstruction strategy. Furthermore, we find that the effective viscosity parameter parameter tends to show progressively smaller decrements with increasing resolution when the best reconstruction strategy (WENO) and the best Riemann solver (linearized)are used. We attribute this result to the more sophisticated dissipation mechanisms that are used in higher-order Godunov schemes. Spectral analysis and transfer functions have been used to quantify the dissipative processes in these higher-order Godunov schemes.

We present a combination of theoretical and simulation-based examinations of the role of two-fluid ambipolar drift on molecular line widths. The dissipation provided by ion-neutral interactions can produce a significant difference between the widths of neutral molecules and the widths of ionic species, comparable to the sound speed. We demonstrate that Alfven waves and certain families of magnetosonic waves become strongly damped on scales comparable to the ambipolar diffusion scale. Using the RIEMANN code, we simulate two-fluid turbulence with ionization fractions ranging from 10^{-2} to 10^{-6}. We show that the wave damping causes the power spectrum of the ion velocity to drop below that of the neutral velocity when measured on a relative basis. Following a set of motivational observations by Li & Houde (2008), we produce synthetic line width-size relations that shows a difference between the ion and neutral line widths, illustrating that two-fluid effects can have an observationally detectable role in modifying the MHD turbulence in the clouds., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRAS

In this work we present a general strategy for constructing multidimensional Riemann solvers with a single intermediate state, with particular attention paid to detailing the two-dimensional Riemann solver. This is accomplished by introducing a constant resolved state between the states being considered, which introduces sufficient dissipation for systems of conservation laws. Closed form expressions for the resolved fluxes are also provided to facilitate numerical implementation. The Riemann solver is proved to be positively conservative for the density variable; the positivity of the pressure variable has been demonstrated for Euler flows when the divergence in the fluid velocities is suitably restricted so as to prevent the formation of cavitation in the flow. We also focus on the construction of multidimensionally upwinded electric fields for divergence-free magnetohydrodynamical flows. A robust and efficient second order accurate numerical scheme for two and three dimensional Euler and magnetohydrodynamic flows is presented. The scheme is built on the current multidimensional Riemann solver. The number of zones updated per second by this scheme on a modern processor is shown to be cost competitive with schemes that are based on a one-dimensional Riemann solver. However, the present scheme permits larger timesteps.
