New sources of reactive supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are essential to help the cement industry to further lower CO2 emissions. A co-calcination process in which bauxite residue (BR) is mixed with kaolinitic clay before calcination can deliver such SCM. The main novelty of the work discussed here is that acceptable reactivity as a SCM can be reached when co-calcining the BR with clays having only 40 wt% of kaolinite. The use of such low-grade kaolinitic clay greater increases the process economics and therefore likely increases overall feasibility. A high inherent reactivity of the desilication products present in the BR is the cause of this ability of using low-grade kaolinitic clays. Cement mortars were made with 30 wt% replacement of CEM I, which showed adequate strength at 28 days and increased strength in comparison with calcined clays or other SCMs in the literature at early age (2–7 days). A wide process temperature window with relatively constant reactivity was observed, but a range of 700–750 °C is recommended for process stability. In addition, a life-cycle assessment underlines that at these conditions a sufficiently low embodied CO2 relative to Portland clinker production is obtained.

Resilience assessment of transportation infrastructure is a crucial aspect of ensuring the continued functionality of a city or region in the face of various disruptions. However, these infrastructures are also vulnerable to various types of disruptions, such as natural disasters. The ability of transportation infrastructures to withstand and recover from such disruptions is referred to as their resilience. This research presents a comprehensive framework to develop the resilience surface for assessing the resilience of transportation infrastructure such as bridges, roads, and tunnels. The framework involves the identification of the unique damage configurations through performing the fragility analysis, and the restoration of the infrastructures through developing recovery curves for each damage configuration by considering the relevant restoration data. The framework also considers the inherent uncertainty in the hazard intensity, modeling uncertainty, and restoration process. The framework is illustrated through the application to a case study of a highway bridge in Canada. The aim of this paper is to provide a useful tool for decision-makers to evaluate and improve the resilience of transportation infrastructures.

Titanium oxide is a major component of bauxite residue (BR) with a high value, but it is often an unwanted element in common BR reuse options such as cement or iron production. Conventional carbothermic reduction smelting of BR produces a slag still containing a large amount of Ti. This study investigates an aluminothermic process for producing an FeTi alloy by combining BR, ilmenite ore, and fluxes. Based on thermodynamic calculations and batch experiments, the amounts of aluminum (reductant) and fluxes were investigated to achieve the optimum alloy production in parallel with a slag that could be further valorized in the cement industry. The mineralogical and chemical analysis of the metallic and slag phase agreed with the thermodynamic calculations. The results obtained by this study can lead to the development of a new process for the complete valorization of BR, paving the way for scaling up aluminothermic processes for producing ferroalloys from all iron-rich residues.

Abstract Mitochondrial activation and the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS) are crucial for CD4+ T cell responses and have a role in naïve cell signaling after TCR activation. However, little is known about mROS role in TCR-independent signaling and in recall responses. Here, we found that mROS are required for IL-12 plus IL-18-driven production of IFN-γ, an essential cytokine for inflammatory and autoimmune disease development. Compared to TCR stimulation, which induced similar levels of mROS in naïve and memory-like cells, IL-12/IL-18 showed faster and augmented mROS production in memory-like cells. mROS inhibition significantly downregulated IFN-γ and CD44 expression, suggesting a direct mROS effect on memory-like T cell function. The mechanism that promotes IFN-γ production after IL-12/IL-18 challenge depended on the effect of mROS on optimal activation of downstream signaling pathways, leading to STAT4 and NF-κB activation. To relate our findings to IFN-γ-driven lupus-like disease, we used Fas-deficient memory-like CD4+ T cells from lpr mice. Importantly, we found significantly increased IFN-γ and mROS production in lpr compared with parental cells. Treatment of WT cells with FasL significantly reduced mROS production and the activation of signaling events leading to IFN-γ. Moreover, Fas deficiency was associated with increased mitochondrial levels of cytochrome C and caspase-3 compared with WT memory-like cells. mROS inhibition significantly reduced the population of disease-associated lpr CD44hiCD62LloCD4+ T cells and their IFN-γ production. Overall, these findings uncovered a previously unidentified role of Fas/FasL interaction in regulating mROS production by memory-like T cells. This apoptosis-independent Fas activity might contribute to the accumulation of CD44hiCD62LloCD4+ T cells that produce increased IFN-γ levels in lpr mice. Overall, our findings pinpoint mROS as central regulators of TCR-independent signaling, and support mROS pharmacological targeting to control aberrant immune responses in autoimmune-like disease.

Abstract Background Time-lapse microscopy live-cell imaging is essential for studying the evolution of bacterial communities at single-cell resolution. It allows capturing detailed information about the morphology, gene expression, and spatial characteristics of individual cells at every time instance of the imaging experiment. The image analysis of bacterial "single-cell movies" (videos) generates big data in the form of multidimensional time series of measured bacterial attributes. If properly analyzed, these datasets can help us decipher the bacterial communities' growth dynamics and identify the sources and potential functional role of intra- and inter-subpopulation heterogeneity. Recent research has highlighted the importance of investigating the role of biological "noise" in gene regulation, cell growth, cell division, etc. Single-cell analytics of complex single-cell movie datasets, capturing the interaction of multiple micro-colonies with thousands of cells, can shed light on essential phenomena for human health, such as the competition of pathogens and benign microbiome cells, the emergence of dormant cells (“persisters”), the formation of biofilms under different stress conditions, etc. However, highly accurate and automated bacterial bioimage analysis and single-cell analytics methods remain elusive, even though they are required before we can routinely exploit the plethora of data that single-cell movies generate. Results We present visualization and single-cell analytics using R (ViSCAR), a set of methods and corresponding functions, to visually explore and correlate single-cell attributes generated from the image processing of complex bacterial single-cell movies. They can be used to model and visualize the spatiotemporal evolution of attributes at different levels of the microbial community organization (i.e., cell population, colony, generation, etc.), to discover possible epigenetic information transfer across cell generations, infer mathematical and statistical models describing various stochastic phenomena (e.g., cell growth, cell division), and even identify and auto-correct errors introduced unavoidably during the bioimage analysis of a dense movie with thousands of overcrowded cells in the microscope's field of view. Conclusions ViSCAR empowers researchers to capture and characterize the stochasticity, uncover the mechanisms leading to cellular phenotypes of interest, and decipher a large heterogeneous microbial communities' dynamic behavior. Scandium, a valuable element with restricted production sources mainly situated in China and Russia, is typically obtained as a by-product during the production of various materials. As the demand for scandium grows in the expanding aluminum and fuel cell industries, and with significant investments in rare earth mining in the USA and Australia, there is a need to explore alternative recovery sources. This research investigates the recovery of scandium from an acid pregnant leaching solution using ion exchange resins. The pregnant leaching solution was obtained after the leaching of bauxite residue with sulfuric acid. Commercial resins with different functional groups were tested for their performance in scandium extraction. In addition, the co-adsorption of impurities, such as iron and titanium, was studied. The feed solution consisted of 12.7 mg/L Sc and main impurities of 272 mg/L Fe and 33.6 mg/L Ti and was pretreated before the ion exchange process by acidification with sulfuric acid and iron powder addition to suppress silica gel formation and minimize the Fe(III) content in the solution accordingly. Among the tested resins, a D2EHPA-impregnated resin had high selectivity for Sc towards Ti, while a monophosphonic resin was also a promising option since it had a higher capacity for Sc but co-extracted Ti. These findings offer promising opportunities for the recovery of scandium from acid leaching solutions and could contribute to addressing the growing demand for this valuable element.

The study aimed to compare incisional wound healing with intradermal suture patterns performed with (a) absorbable suture with burying of the knots and (b) nonabsorbable suture anchored with clips. Ten dogs were included in the study. Surgically created skin incisions were apposed with continuous intradermal suture pattern with 4/0 poliglecaprone 25 with burying of the knots and continuous intradermal pattern with 4/0 polypropylene with clips. Cosmetic, clinical, ultrasonographic and histological scores were evaluated. The intradermal pattern with clips was easier to perform and required significantly less time to complete than the intradermal suture with burying of the knots. Cosmetic, clinical, ultrasonographic and histological evaluation scores did not differ significantly between the techniques. Irrespective of the technique used, the cosmetic, ultrasonographic, clinical and histological appearances of the incisions improved over time. In conclusion, polypropylene was found to be a safe and effective suture material for use with intradermal suture pattern with clips in dogs and to have an easy and quick application. However, in our sample, its earlier removal from wounds than poliglecaprone 25 was not found to be associated with a supposedly beneficial effect on wound healing and scar appearance. Both suture materials can be useful in intradermal suture techniques in dogs.

The study aimed to monitor the healing process in the canine skin following surgical incision and closure using staples or tissue glue and to compare them with the intradermal suture pattern. Surgically created skin incisions in 10 dogs were apposed with staples, tissue glue (n-butyl cyanoacrylate) and continuous intradermal pattern. The cosmetic appearance of the wounds was blindly evaluated on days 7, 14 and 28 and once a month until the end of the experiment, i.e., one year after the incision. Ultrasonographic and clinical evaluation was performed on days 0–10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 24 and 28, once a week until the end of the 3rd month and once a month until the end of the experiment. Histopathological evaluation was performed on days 7, 14, 28, 180 and 365. The median time required for the performance of each technique differed significantly between techniques; stapling lasted 21 s, glue 2 min 16 s and intradermal 15 min 37 s. Cosmetic appearance with glue was statistically worse than staples and intradermal. The clinical appearance of intradermal was significantly better than glue and staples. No significant differences were found at histological evaluation; however, glue had the worst score throughout the experiment. The overall evaluation of the techniques showed that glue had the worst score compared to intradermal and staples, with the difference being statistically significant in the first postoperative week. Intradermal suture pattern is much better than glue application for skin closure in dogs, whilst is not significantly better than staples. Staples should be preferred when time is an important factor.
