Abstract

The north western Atlas Mountains (Béchar region) act as refugia for relict populations of many species which highlights their interest as priority areas for conservation. Further work since the beginning of the last century has been difficult because of restricted access in a military area with long-standing border conflicts. This paper aims to analyse the temporal dynamics of the vegetation communities, to assess the floristic diversity of one of those isolated djebels, Djebel Antar, and to contribute to the knowledge of the conservation status of the species found. Surveys from 1925,1951 (published data) and 2017 (fieldwork) were interpreted and investigations were carried out on honey harvesting, production, and marketing in the Benzireg area to better understand and contribute to the development of beekeeping. A high proportion of endemic and very rare species was found. A tendency towards the homogenisation of the flora was detected with a decrease in plant diversity. Beekeeping is being tested as a means of enhancing biodiversity and contributing to the fight against vegetation degradation by reducing pastoral pressure. Djebel Antar retains its function as a refuge for biodiversity and may play an important role in conservation measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The Sudanian savanna in West Africa is clearly one of the most representative examples of a landscape that has been fully transformed by human intervention, specifically by fire. In the savanna landscapes, bush fires are an omnipresent, recurrent and determinant phenomenon. Often considered as a major risk and an environmental constraint for the vegetation, burning is also a socio-cultural practice. More than a degradation factor, fires are a part of modes of managing the environment by agro-pastoral societies. The fire-prone landscapes we observe today are also inherited as the result of long-term interaction between human societies and their environment. A historical perspective on the role of fire in their construction is thus essential for gaining an insight into current dynamics.

Abstract

International audience; Senegambian megaliths (7th-15th century) are characterized by the presence of standing stones, called frontal stones, erected to the east of funerary monuments whose ruins take various forms in the landscape: for example, circles of standing stones or mounds cove-red by small stones. Some 17,000 monuments called ‘megalithic’ are spread over an area of 30,000 square kilometres; they correspond to the ruins, sometimes sealed beneath a mound, of platforms measuring 3 to 9 metres in diameter and ringed by standing stones or dry stone walls. Even today, among the Bassaris, stone platforms support a roof –symbolizing the house of the dead – and cover a burial pit widening at the base to receive the body of the deceased. Other stones were erected to the east of larger burial pits, covered by a mound, which have been compared to contemporary funerary structures of the Sereers. The burial practices associated with these megalithic monuments are also varied: individual or multiple burials, exposure of bodies on the ground surface covered by the monumental structure, secondary deposits of human bones in various forms (inclu-ding deposits of large baskets containing human remains, sometimes in primary position), and even some reference to cremations. The term ‘funerary’ must be nuanced in a cultural context where it often covers three stages separated in time: burial in the tomb, the “great funeral”, and the “ancestralization” of the deceased. Identifying places associated with “the dead” must also be nuanced in societies where certain rites of passage are sometimes thought of as rebirths. The question of whether there are accompanying dead has also been raised. The status of the archaeological assemblages should be discussed in relation to these different parameters. Most deposits of carinated ceramics, for example - classically associated with Senegambian megalithic monuments – are now being attri-buted to commemorative practices.This current state of knowledge, which has been revitalized during the last 10 years, will be discussed in the much broader context of funerary practices over two millennia in West Africa; funerary platforms lined with standing stones are attested in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea; standing stones associated with other forms of mound as far away as the Niger Delta in Mali. Gradually, the megaliths of Senegal and the Gambia – classified as World Heritage through comparisons with Stonehenge – are regaining the place that they have always held on the soil of the African continent.

International audience; Since 2015, archaeological research carried outon the site of Soto (Kaffrine region, Senegal -L. Laporte and H. Bocoum, dir.) shed new light at funerary tumulistructures (Mbaanar) so far little studied. Among all acceptionsthe term Mbaanarcovers, many of them are materializedin the landscape by discretemounds of less than fifty centimetersin height. Very few exampleshave a frontal stone erected ontheireastside, as it is the case in Soto. On the eastern periphery of the tumulus, a protohistoric ground level is indicated by a crown of laterite gravel. A broad depression in its center indicates the initial location of the lyre stone. Extracted in 1964, this stone with central tenon is now exposed and integrated into the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly (Paris, France). Geophysical sur-veys conducted at Soto had highlighted a «clay anomaly» in the centerof the monument. This one is surrounded by a discontinuous peripheral ditch and some hollow structures. Extensive excavationsthen made it possible to revealthe entirety of a monumental earthen architecture of about 25 m in diameter and at least 1.5 m high. This oval-shaped monument iserected at thecenter of a large circular pit and issurrounded by several more or less continuous peripheral ditches. The structure of the monument testifies to an ela-borate architectural project and a mastery of mud construction techniques. A geoarchaeological study is actually in progress, in parti-cular to specify construction techniques and identify possible collapsed parts of the earthen architecture. His central part is made of a yellow earth core, probably surrounded by a palisade of about 10m in diameter whichmay have initiallycovered the funerarylevels. Then, several beds of raw earth placed at the top coverthe entire structure, appearing as many successive steps. On one of them, a spearhead had been planted vertically. For the first time in West Africa, this multidisciplinary work reveals a completely unsuspected monument in size and shapewhere many had previously seen only small sand hills. This somehow well-hidden ostentation is here associated with a more classic megalithic element, now exposed to the sight of millions of visitors.

Abstract

International audience; In West Africa, the determination of chronostratigraphic sequences from fluvial sedimentary records is a crucial issue in the study of Holocene continental palaeoenvironments. The results presented in this first study, carried out in the middle valley of the Bao Bolon River, a tributary of the Gambia River in Senegal, attest to high-quality sedimentary records. At the watershed scale, continuities and discontinuities are interpreted as aggradation and erosion phases. Eight chronostratigraphic units have been defined, which document in particular the second half of the Holocene. The last two units cover the terminal part of the Holocene, and provide a relatively detailed description of the period contemporary of the archaeological megalithic sites, listed with the World Heritage list of UNESCO, as well as the strong anthropization phase of the past decades.; En Afrique de l’Ouest, l’établissement de séquences chronostratigraphiques à partir d’archives sédimentaires fluviatiles est une étape cruciale pour l’étude des paléoenvironnements continentaux holocènes. Les résultats présentés dans cette première étude, menée dans la moyenne vallée du Bao Bolon, affluent de la Gambie au Sénégal, attestent d’archives sédimentaires de qualité, dont les continuités et discontinuités sont interprétées en termes de phases d’aggradation et d’érosion à l’échelle des bassins versants. Huit unités chronostratigraphiques ont été définies, documentant en particulier la deuxième moitié de l’Holocène. Les deux dernières unités couvrant la partie terminale de l’Holocène renseignent de manière relativement détaillée la période contemporaine des sites archéologiques mégalithiques, classés au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, ainsi que la phase d’anthropisation intense des dernières décennies

International audience; For a long time, fires were regarded as harmful by territory managers, especially by foresters, and today in a contextwhere the protection of the environment debated. European regulations criminalizing fires have been transmittedin the “South” countries during colonization: fires were perceived as a threat to vegetation, which could lead todesertification processes. In that respect, in Madagascar, since its colonization in 1895, “the foresters were alarmedby what they saw as wasteful fires”. Back «In the early 19th century, the island’s petty kingdoms were transformedinto a sophisticated modern state, leading to the first recorded state-level regulation of fires». “The state criminal-ized burning due to concern that fire destroys the island’s natural resources and blocks development».However, recent studies on bushfire in West Africa, have changed this depiction. «Thus, above the image of apowerful constraint on the vegetation, scientific progress in ecology and paleoecology allowed gaining a betterunderstanding that ecologically, fire is part of savannah systems. Fire is an element of the system that forms sa-vannah landscapes in intertropical countries. For West Africa, the authors use the term ‘pyroclimax’, climax offire. Generally, in a climax plant vegetation used as reference, unwavering set of operating principles of biophys-ical processes is required, and an exclusion of human influence. However, it has been admitted that ecosystemsneed perturbation in order to remove some elements, to make way for young, regenerating stands. Moreover, wenotice that plant formations are able to adapt to a new permanent factor ecologic. Systems have the capacity tolearn, adapt and self-organize around various factors affected. Human factors can be studied as ecological agents;geosystem determines as a structuring form of natural systems, the anthropisation factor. When the plant vegetationdynamics is ‘artificial nature’, it’s systematically pejorative connotations, whereas heterogenous landscapes gen-erate biodiversity. A number of studies demonstrate the antiquity of anthropogenic actions and the environementsresultant have sometimes acquired a patrimonial character. Fire is an example of an agent dictated by the Manactions. His regular and frequent passage change wood plant vegetation into savannah; filter, pyrophiles woodyspecies and grasses. Identify permanent fire spaces could reveal landscapes organised by anthropogenics actions.To study these phenomena, the south-west of Madagascar is a good case. The Public policies have made the choiceto strictly prohibit fire because it is identify as the principal agent of degradation of climax wood plant vegetation.Our study aim is to take another look at the role of fire in environmental and landscapes dynamics in south-westof Madagascar on many space and time scales. To account quantitative and qualitative evolutions of surface condi-tion, teledetection method using satellite data Modis and Landsat, are cross whith field observations: quantificationof biophysical components and land use, surveys and interviews about uses and their transformations, perceptionsand representations. Contribution will draw on a caracterisation of fire spaces and their evolution since 20 years onthe Fiherenana and Onilahy watershed, on the South-west of Madagascar.

Abstract

International audience; Anjouan est l’île la plus accidentée et la plus densément peuplée de l’archipel des Comores avec une superficie de 424 km2 pour une population dépassant 600000 habitants. Alternant entre cultures vivrières et de rente, les paysages agraires actuels d’Anjouan résultent non seulement d’héritages, mais aussi de mutations spatio-temporelles: avant, pendant et après la colonisation. Les effets sociaux fonciers, économiques et environnementaux de la colonisation dans la transformation de ces paysages ne sont pas encore élucidés.Pour mieux répondre à cette problématique, nous adopterons une approche diachronique verticale et horizontale mettant en comparaison l’imagerie ancienne et actuelle. L’approche verticale consiste à confronter des photographies aériennes de 1950, 1969 et 1988 avec des images récentes de Google Earth. Quant à l’approche horizontale, nous utiliserons des photographies panoramiques remontant aux années 1940 comparées à des photographies récentes prises au même lieu. Elle a l’avantage de faire apparaître les paysages agraires tels que vécus et perçus par les communautés locales.Cette approche par l’imagerie sera complétée par des observations et des enquêtes sur les perceptions, les atouts et les inconvénients de la colonisation dans la transformation des paysages agraires. Cette recherche élucidera les dynamiques d’évolution des paysages agraires d’Anjouan. Elle décryptera par la suite les effets positifs et négatifs de la colonisation dans la transformation de ces paysages: jeux d’affectation, de dépossession et de rétrocession des terres et leurs conséquences, poids de l’économie agraire coloniale dans l’économie actuelle, impact des paysages agraires coloniaux dans leur environnement

Abstract

International audience; The research on the mutations of colonial agrarian landscapes aims to provide historical-geo-graphical knowledge on their transformations and evolutionary tendencies during sultan, colonial and postcolonial periods. To achieve it, archive, multidata images and field data were collected, organized, analyzed and compared. It is clear from this that more than 40 years after the Independence, the plantations and the factories which constituted the great symbols of the agrarian colonization are either almost era-sed from the landscape or in a state of ruin. Of the more than 17 species introduced to Anjouan by Europeans as part of the plantation economy, only clove, ylang-ylang and vanilla are today export and industrial crops. As for traditional food crops, they are part of the agrarian landscapes that are currently under urban pressure. In compensation, Anjouan is subject to agriculture in forest areas. These landscape transformations went together with positive and negative effects as regards socio-spatial, socio-economic and environmental aspects. Among them, there were cases of expropriation, retrocession and land conflicts; rural exodus and migration; duality and complementarity between traditional agricultural economies of self-sufficiency and plantations of capitalist type; export crops as main sources of family incomes; deforestation and degradation of river flows.; L’objectif de l’étude sur les mutations des paysages agraires coloniaux à Anjouan a été d’apporter des connaissances historico-géographiques sur leurs transformations, leurs tendances évolutives ainsi que les effets qui en découlent, depuis les périodes sultanesques, coloniales et postcoloniales. Pour atteindre ces objectifs, des archives manuscrites, des images multidates et des données de terrain ont été collectées, rassemblées, organisées, analysées et confrontées. Il en ressort que plus de 40 ans après l’indépendance, les plantations et les usines qui ont constitué les grands symboles de la colonisation agraire à Anjouan, sont quasiment effacées du paysage ou en état de ruine. Sur plus de 17 espèces introduites à Anjouan par les Européens dans le cadre de l’économie de plantation, seuls le giroflier, l’ylang-ylang et la vanille constituent aujourd’hui des cultures d’exportation et industrielles. Quant aux cultures vivrières traditionnelles, elles s’inscrivent durablement sur les paysages agraires qui, actuellement, sont sous la pression urbaine. D’un autre côté, Anjouan est soumise à une agricolisation des espaces forestiers. Ces transformations paysagères ont eu divers effets positifs et négatifs socio-spatiaux, socio-économiques et environnementaux. On observe ainsi des processus de dépossession, rétrocession et de conflits fonciers, d’exode rural et de migration. Elles ont aussi créé une dualité et complémentarité entre une économie agricole traditionnelle d’autosuffisance et de plantation de type capitaliste, les cultures d’exportation étant devenues la principale source de revenus familiaux et pourvoyeuse des recettes. Enfin, un autre effet est le déboisement et la dégradation des écoulements hydriques des rivières.
