Abstract

The peculiarities of patent protection of biotechnological inventions have been investigated as a factor of transformation of national economic and legal processes. It has been established that the conditions for obtaining of a patent for biotechnological inventions differ from the conditions of patenting in other spheres, since all biotechnology inventions directly or indirectly are the product of nature.It has been determined that the issue of the conformity of such inventions with the patentability conditions is a key issue when providing the intellectual property (IP) rights for biotechnological inventions. The invention in the field of biotechnology meets the requirements of patentability, provided that it is new, has an inventive level and is industrially suitable.It has been substantiated that the same standards of patenting of inventions in the field of biotechnology can not be applied in different legal systems, therefore corresponding decisions should be made on the basis of the national law.It has been established that the increase of applications submitted in Ukraine for biotechnology inventions during 2013—2017 has been ensured due to the inventive activity of foreign applicants. It has been also determined that the absence of special legislative regulation of relations related to biotechnology constrains the development of the biotechnological industry in Ukraine. The key role of the state system of legal protection of IP has been proved, since the introduction of effective IP management mechanisms and integrated support for innovators are one of the main factors of the determination of the possibility of affirmation in the global IP system., Исследованы особенности патентной охраны биотехнологических изобретений как фактора трансформации национальных экономико-правовых процессов. Установлено, что условия для получения патента на биотехнологические изобретения отличаются от условий патентования в других сферах, несмотря на то, что все изобретения в области биотехнологии прямо или косвенно являются продуктом природы. Акцентировано на важности четкого разграничения между открытием природного явления и новым объектом интеллектуальной собственности. Охарактеризованы критерии патентования для изобретений в области биотехнологии. Обосновано, что одинаковые стандарты патентования изобретений в области биотехнологии невозможно применять в различных правовых системах, поэтому соответствующие решения должны приниматься, исходя из положений национального права. Установлено, что нормативно-правовое регулирование патентования изобретений в области биотехнологии требует совершенствования с учетом особенностей биотехнологических объектов интеллектуальной собственности., Досліджено особливості патентної охорони біотехнологічних винаходів як чинника трансформації національних економіко-правових процесів. Установлено, що умови для отримання патенту на біотехнологічні винаходи відрізняються від умов патентування в інших сферах, зважаючи на те, що усі винаходи в галузі біотехнології прямо або опосередковано є продуктом природи. Акцентовано на важливості чіткого розмежування між відкриттям природного явища і новим об’єктом інтелектуальної власності. Охарактеризовано критерії патентування для винаходів у галузі біотехнології. Обґрунтовано, що однакові стандарти патентування винаходів у галузі біотехнології неможливо застосовувати в різних правових системах, тому відповідні рішення повинні ухвалюватися, виходячи з положень національного права. Установлено, що нормативно-правове регулювання патентування винаходів у галузі біотехнології потребує удосконалення з урахуванням особливостей біотехнологічних об’єктів інтелектуальної власності.

Abstract

Sharka disease is one of the most devastating plant epidemics of Prunus species, caused by plum pox virus (PPV). The viral infection affects the fruits by weight-loss and degradation of quality properties. Breeding of resistant rootstocks and cultivars is one of the most effective disease control methods. PPV determines the peach production all over the world. On the world's fruit production list peach is in the sixth, in the Mediterranean region in the fourth place. In this study new data were shown about PPV susceptibility of commonly used rootstock-scion combinations from Hungary. Reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) analysis was conducted on the samples from a commercial orchard; the results were evaluated by chi-square test and binary logistic regression. Four rootstock ('GF677', 'PeMa', 'Cadaman' and almond seedlings) and three scion cultivars (Prunus persicae 'Michelini', 'Babygold 6' and 'Cresthaven') were included in this experiment. The rootstocks did not show any significant differences in regard to the resistance of the virus infection (40-50%), but in case of scions, strong significant relations were observed. In case of the combinations there were results in both directions; tolerant and susceptible combinations were observed as well.

45. Pharmacological conversion of recent atrial fibrillation: a randomized, placebo-controlled study of three antiarrhythmic drugs.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we randomly compared single oral doses of flecainide, amiodarone and propafenone versus placebo for the conversion of recent atrial fibrillation (AF) (within 48 hours). METHODS: This is a randomized prospective, placebo-controlled single-blind study that included 160 consecutive patients with recent AF who were randomly assigned to single oral doses of flecainide (3 mg/kg of weight, n=40), amiodarone (30 mg/kg weight, n=40), propafenone (8.5 mg/kg of weight, n=40) or placebo (n=40). The primary end-point was conversion rate at 24 hours after the drug intake. The association between antiarrhythmic use and conversion rate was tested with multiple logistic regressions. RESULTS: The primary end-point was achieved in 87.5% of patients with flecainide, 85% of patients with amiodarone, 85% of patients with propafenone and 17.5% of patients with placebo (p<0.001 compared with placebo for all 3 drugs). Conversion rate within 3 hours after drug intake was greater with propafenone (57.5%) or flecainide (45%) compared with amiodarone (0%) or placebo (10%). Between 6 and 24 hours, significantly more patients were converted to sinus rhythm with amiodarone than with flecainide or propafenone. The use of antiarrhythmic drugs was a significant predictor of conversion to sinus rhythm compared to placebo (adjusted OR=19.53, 95% CI 3.14-121.55, p<0.001). No serious side effect occurred. CONCLUSION: In patients with recent-onset AF, oral flecainide, amiodarone or propafenone are superior to placebo in restoring sinus rhythm within the 24-hour period following the drug intake. 48. Na+-H+ and Na+-Ca2+ exchange in glomerulosa cells: possible role in control of aldosterone production

Abstract

Sodium uptake by rat adrenal glomerulosa cells was stimulated by intracellular acidosis evoked by Na+-propionate. This process was inhibited by 5-(N,N-hexamethylene) amiloride (HMA), a known inhibitor of the Na+-H+ exchange. These experiments demonstrate the existence of the Na+-H+ exchange in glomerulosa cells. Although amiloride inhibited the angiotensin II- and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-induced aldosterone response, HMA, a more specific inhibitor of Na+-H+ exchange, failed to do that. 45Ca2+ influx and efflux were dependent on intra- and extracellular Na+ concentrations. Amiloride analogues, known to inhibit Na+-Ca2+ exchange, reduced basal 45Ca influx. Although we could not reveal the activation of Na+-Ca2+ exchange by angiotensin II, inhibitors of Na+-Ca2+ exchange also inhibited the angiotensin- and ACTH-induced aldosterone response of glomerulosa cells. Our results suggest that Na+-Ca2+ exchange supports the maintenance of basal Ca2+ level in the cytoplasma of glomerulosa cells, and amiloride derivatives inhibit aldosterone production by reducing Ca2+ level below resting values.

49. Angiotensin II and potassium activate different calcium entry mechanisms in rat adrenal glomerulosa cells

Abstract

Initial 45Ca uptake was measured in isolated rat glomerulosa cells. A small reduction in membrane potential produced by increasing the K+concentration from 2 to 3·6 mmol/l stimulated 45Ca uptake by about 35%, while a bigger depolarization induced by 18·5 mmol K+/l increased the uptake by about 100%. Since Ca2+influx was already activated at a calculated membrane potential below −70 mV, and was found to be sensitive to the dihydropyridine antagonist nifedipine (1 μmol/l), but insensitive to nickel ions (100 μmol/l), it does not meet the criteria established for T- or L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+channels. Exposure of glomerulosa cells to angiotensin II (AII) for 10 min also enhanced the rate of 45Ca influx. The effect of AII was not sensitive to 1 μmol nifedipine/l, but was strongly inhibited by 5-(N-4-chlorobenzyl)-N-(2′,4′-dimethyl)benzamil (CBDMB, 30 μmol/l), an inhibitor of the Na+/Ca2+antiporter. These observations suggest that during the sustained phase of stimulation with AII, a CBDMB-sensitive mechanism, rather than dihydropyridine-sensitive calcium channels, is involved in Ca2+uptake in rat glomerulosa cells. The bulk Ca2+influx did not correlate with aldosterone production; however, the maintained activity of different Ca2+entry mechanisms seems to be essential for AII-induced aldosterone production.Journal of Endocrinology(1989) 122,361–370

50. Synergistic Interaction between Vindesine and X-rays in the Prenatal Development of Mice

Abstract

The modification of radiation damage by various concentrations of the oncolytic drug vindesine was studied macroscopically, using mouse embryos during the early organogenesis (days eight and nine of gestation) as the test system. The analysis at term showed that the developmental toxicity of vindesine depends on the dosage and the time of administration. In the lower dose-range (0·25 and 0·35 mg/kg), the only reaction was growth retardation, whereas higher concentrations (0·5 and 1·0 mg/kg) led mainly to an early resorption of implants. The more differentiated stage (day nine) exhibited a much higher sensitivity to vindesine than the embryo on day eight. Conversely, the harmful action of 0·9 Gy X-rays was restricted to the earlier period of organogenesis. The incidence of abnormalities after irradiation on day eight was 4·5 times higher than the one following exposure on day nine. The combined exposures showed a radiosensitizing capacity of the drug with respect to the teratogenic response on day eight only. The pretreatment with 0·25 mg/kg vindesine potentiated the radiation-induced malformation rate by a factor of 1·7, and the one with 0·35 mg/kg vindesine by a factor of 2·4.
