Abstract

The introduction of glycoconjugate vaccines marks an important point in the fight against various infectious diseases. The covalent conjugation of relevant polysaccharide antigens to immunogenic carrier proteins enables the induction of a long-lasting and robust IgG antibody response, which is not observed for pure polysaccharide vaccines. Although there has been remarkable progress in the development of glycoconjugate vaccines, many crucial parameters remain poorly understood. In particular, the influence of the conjugation site and strategy on immunogenic properties of the final glycoconjugate vaccine is the focus of intense research. Here, we present a comparison of two cysteine selective conjugation strategies, elucidating the impact of both modifications on the structural integrity of the carrier protein, as well as on the immunogenic properties of the resulting glycoconjugate vaccine candidates. Our work suggests that conjugation chemistries impairing structurally relevant elements of the protein carrier, such disulfide bonds, can have a dramatic effect on protein immunogenicity., Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 675671. Abstract

ABSTRACT Primary testicular lymphoma (PTL) is a rare occurrence of diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL) that accounts for 1%–2% of all cases. Nodal DLBCL with testis involvement (DLBCL‐T) and PTL are associated with poor prognosis, with high incidence of central nervous system relapse. Fifteen patients (median age 60 years) with PTL (n = 5) or DLBCL‐T (n = 10) received high‐dose methotrexate + R‐CHOP. Overall, complete response (CR) rate was 73% and overall response rate 86%. With a 3.9‐year median follow‐up, 100% of patients with PTL had CR and none relapsed. On the contrary, 55% of DLBCL‐T patients achieved CR among which only one was still in remission at the end of follow‐up. Molecular parallels between PTL and Primary CNS Lymphoma (PCNSL) suggest shared origins, urging further research for tailored treatments and enhanced understanding of these lymphomas' biology. 21. Breakaway oxidation su acciai inossidabili

Abstract

In questo lavoro sono stati eseguiti trattamenti di ossidazione ad alta temperatura su un acciaio AISI 304L in condizioni controllate per studiare il fenomeno della breakaway oxidation. Esso consiste nella rottura localizzata dello strato di ossido dovuta a shock termici o meccanici, con conseguente esposizione di metallo non ossidato all’atmosfera ossidante. Data la sua natura, si tratta di un fenomeno difficile da prevedere e da monitorare. Sono stati messi a punto metodi per la sua identificazione attraverso tecniche di analisi termica e di microscopia elettronica. E’ stata valutata l’influenza di temperatura, atmosfera ossidante e umidità sulla occorrenza del fenomeno, con riferimento al processo produttivo degli acciai. La possibilità di prevedere nel dettaglio i tempi di trattamento termico ai quali si osserva il fenomeno di breakaway oxidation si conferma limitata.

Abstract

Plant biodiversity studies have been performed in the Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli Regional Park in Tuscany (Italy) within the frame of the European project LIFE08 NAT/IT/342 DEMETRA. This project aims at developing a quick monitoring index (QMI) to rapidly assess the potential risk generated by transgenic plants in characterized ecosystems or biotopes. For this reason test areas have been selected inside the protected area to evaluate plant (weeds and trees), animal, and soil microoganisms biodiversity. The proximity of the selected test area to cropped surfaces where Genetically Modified Plants (GMPs) might be cultivated has been taken into account. GMPs could spread pollen and hybridize with their wild relatives. To evaluate potential hybridization, Brassica napus L. var. oleifera Del. (oil seed-rape) were cropped. B. napus forms spontaneous hybrids with both of its wild progenitor species, B. rapa (wild turnip) and B. oleracea (wild cabbage) and there has been much interest in the extent of sexual compatibility between Brassica napus (oilseed rape) and wild Brassica species. Some wild plant species belonging to Brassicaceae have been selected in the protected areas, to evaluate possible hybridization and gene flow. The choice of Brassicaceae has been done considering the pollinating fauna and the flowering period. Sinapis arvensis was considered as one possible candidate to hybridize with oilseed rape. If GM oilseed rape is to be grown the possibility of his modified trait being transferred to S. arvensis needs serious consideration as the species are widespread. Due to the close genomic relationship between these taxa, SSR primers designed for different Brassica species were tested to amplify both in Brassica napus and Sinapis arvensis. Therefore we looked for S. arvensis populations and oilseed B. napus cultivars which would hybridize in the field. Analysis are in progress.
